Scout Report – Valon Behrami

Watford continued to strengthen ahead of their return to the top flight, with the capture of former Napoli and West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami on a three-year deal.

In conversation with the club’s official website, Behrami revealed that he’s been tracking the Hornets’ progress since his former boss Gianfranco Zola spent a year in charge at Vicarage Road:

“This is a great club and I know the way the owners work. They’ve made some great signings. I’ve followed Watford since Gianfranco Zola was the manager. I played for him at West Ham and since then I was always looking out for Watford. Finally the time has arrived when Watford are back in the Premier League and it was a good solution for me, so I’m very happy now. It’s very attractive; when Mr Pozzo called me I was excited. It’s a new adventure for me, a new challenge, and I’m really hungry for this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Yugoslavia, Behrami moved to Switzerland as a child, beginning his footballing education at local clubs FC Stabio and FC Chiasso. In 2000, he was snapped up by top-tier Swiss outfit Lugano, where he would train for two years before earning a move to Genoa. After recording zero attacking returns across 24 outings in his debut season with the Red-blues, Behrami was loaned out to fellow Serie B oufit Verona for the 2004/05 season. He netted three goals in 33 appearances for the Yellow-blues, prompting Lazio to bring him to Serie A.

In three years at the Stadio Olimpico, Behrami notched four goals and one assist in 64 outings. West Ham United then came calling in the summer of 2008, landing the Switzerland international in a £5 million deal. Behrami filled in at right-back for Lucas Neill at the start of his debut campaign with the Hammers but was quickly shifted to a defensive midfield berth. He missed 13 matches through injury in the 2008/09 season, chalking up one goal and two assists in 24 appearances. Over the next term and a half, Behrami mustered just 29 starts, bagging one goal and five assists along the way. Having failed to make the squad for 10 of West Ham’s previous 13 league clashes prior to his move, Behrami signed for Fiorentina in the dying embers of the 2011 January transfer window.

Following a one-season stint with Viola (zero goals and one assist in 31 outings), Behrami teamed up with Napoli for two years (zero attacking returns in 54 appearances). Most recently, he endured an injury-hit season with Hamburg, making just 22 starts as the Bundesliga outfit narrowly escape relegation by a single point.

On the international scene, he has turned out for Switzerland in 59 occasions and found the net twice, with his last strike coming in a friendly against Slovenia back in 2008.

The Prospects

Given his lack of attacking returns, it’s fair to say that Behrami will find it difficult to convince Fantasy managers he’s worthy of a place in our 15-man squads. Nonetheless, at a price of just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he may appeal to those looking for a cut-price midfielder with a security of starts that can sit on our benches and be called upon in emergencies.

Whilst his similarly-priced team-mate Ikechi Anya recorded seven assists in 27 starts last term, for example, the influx of new signings suggests the Scotland international may struggle to nail down a starting berth under new manager, Quique Sanchez Flores.

Elsewhere in the centre of the park, Almen Abdi (5.0) will be hoping to remain in Flores’ plans. Aside from being Watford’s premier free-kick taker, the Switzerland international enjoys a fair share of their corners and tallied nine goals last term – only Troy Deeney (122) and Odion Ighalo (71) mustered more attempts at goal. The ex-Udinese midfielder was arguably unlucky not to amass more than two assists, having executed 33 key passes across 32 matches, though given that new recruit José Manuel Jurado has previously played under Flores, the competition in the final third is clearly heating up.

Behrami, on the other hand, at least looks a secure option in the double-pivot, considering that Flores has rolled out a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s friendlies so far. An average of 4.2 tackles per appearance in the Bundesliga last season highlights his defensive-minded duties and suggests that Behrami’s ball-winning ability will be vital as Watford look to avoid the drop. In turn, that could boost his side’s defensive prospects, given that they managed just 15 clean sheets in the Championship in 2014/15.

Certainly, with Everton, West Brom, Southampton and City in the opening four weeks, Watford have been handed a taxing start to the season, though for those eyeing up their defensive options, it’s worth bearing in mind that they rotate with Bournemouth over the course of the season. Behrami’s main appeal lies in that of a cut-price “enabler”, then, though the opening few weeks should highlight more viable attacking options in the budget midfield bracket.

Swansea fans - is it true Siggy is less effective in the diamond formation? Clangers made a point yesterday about Siggy being much more effective when Monk plays a 4-2-3-1 formation. If this is the case I might have to reconsider Siggy 🙁

Link to the post please? Currently have Siggy in my team and would like to read that.

I think a proven FLP asset at 7.5m should be good, especially as on set pieces and Swansea have a lovely run of opening fixtures, bar Chelsea away in GW1.

Worked fine mate, sorry to disappoint but I'm a guy 😉 Made the account to hide from my mates who are on here.

Either way, I will still start with him and drop to Milner/Hendo/Tadic/Chadli depending who is on form, but still fancy Siggy to do well, like last year with his goal and assist away at Man Utd.

LOL oh well. Yeh me too, Siggy is great value at 7.5, almost definitely on set pieces. Even if he is less effective in diamond formation Monk will change around a bit and Siggy always picks up points

              nice one

Just been tinkering with my Ultimate team where I'm going with 3 cheap midfielders. I've got Wanyama and Albrighton in there. Any thoughts on Sinclair at Villa? He's only 5.0. Is he an option for a cheap mid in my normal team? I see that most have gone with Wanyama but I've currently got Albrighton in there (based on end of season form).

    Courtois / Schwarz

    Huth, O'shea, Darmian ,Francis,Targett

    Haz, Ritchie, Depay, Walcott, Anya

    Kun, Benteke, Sakho

I have read the "navigating the opening weeks" article and have taken the part about prioritizing flexibility into account allowing your self to make early changes easily and I like this idea.

Hi. My objections "against" your selection is that you have too many players that are wildcards. Darmian and Targett might not play. Ritchie and Sakho are unsure picks in my opinion. Aguero will almost certainly not play GW1.

Though I think you have succeeded with your strategy as you will be able to quickly change things around with few transfers.

Doubling up could be risky, especially as LVG likes to rotate his mids, ADM last year being a huge pain for me, especially when giving him the (C) for a plum home fixture, only to see him start on the bench ;(

Quick RMT? Plan to get Kun in for Costa when he's fit + WC after GW4 if things not going well or looking good...

    Courtois (4.0)
    Ivan, Mings, Morgan (Jenkinson, O'Shea)
Theo, Caz, Mane, Albrighton (Big Vic)
    Costa, Rooney, Sakho
    +2.0 ITB

Have basically went with Double chelsea Defence as think they'll be in CS mode @ start of season + 4 cheap rotating Defs... Leicster/Bournmouth/Westham/Sunderland all rotate pretty well for first 4x weeks... Hoping Arsenal will bag a good few goals in their opening fixs hence the double up.

personally I like to have a solid midfield to build my team around, but I like your setup as well. If I were to say anything it would be to not start the season with three from Chelsea (or any other team). Let's say Hazard or Fabregas starts very well, then you will need to do -4 (or -8) to get them in as you already have three from Chelsea.

Even if you have planned to play the WC after GW4 I think it's a good idea to start the season as flexible as possible.

True dat - cheers... al along I was starting with Kun & had Fab in midfield... but taking an educated short term risk that Costa will outscore Kun in GW1, hopefully by 10+ points... then GW2 move is Costa -> Kun if he's fit, which leaves path free to change Caz -> Fab if he's going well.

If hazard starts well I'm F-d though, can't get him in without major surgery. But hopefully Ivan/Costa will be sufficient coverage of any Chelsea goodness.

        Roll on Saturday 8th!!

Who do we think will be premier league top scorer this season? I think aguero if he can remain fit otherwise I'd go with Sanchez!

foolish to be against kun or costa if fit. can't see anybody else getting near them if either of those two play 34 games plus

I don't think Rooney will score 20% (rough maths) more than Depay or Mata to make him worth that extra 2m over them. I really don't. Plus both those other players are well capable of big double figure hauls so worth captaining in right fixtures.

He has the security of starts though... LVG will tinker with the 3 AM's behind Rooney.. whereas when Rooney's fit he'll surely start.
He needs to step up & take penalties & FK's all for himself.

same eleven again (bar keeper and jones for smalling?)

is blind going to play at centre back this season?

and is that front four now nailed...

I think that may well be the front 4 against Spurs now. Smalling could come into the defence, hopefully Blind at CB isn't a thing when the season starts

LVG said more than likely this starting 11 would be more or less the same as the team who will start against Spurs.

Just depends if you believe LVG or not

Swap ADM for Ashley Young & Otamendi or Ramos for Blind & that is quite the team. With Schweinsteiger for Carrick or Scneiderlin.

Blind is an interesting one. Always feels like LvG wants him to play regardless of where he needs to put him.

He was excellent at LB last season but hopefully that will be Shaw's position until he gets injured or starts playing poorly.

With the new CMs we've signed I don't see Blind getting in there so maybe he will continue at CB but I'm not quite sure about that one.

Ex-Exeter City man, Matt Grimes seems to be getting plenty of time with Swansea, and played as the No10 tonight v Forest.
    One to watch as a potential 4.5m midfielder - plenty of goals in him;
