Scout Report – Jordan Ayew

Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

Think I'm relatively settled on this. Hasn't really changed too much now. Apart from Ade in*

    Ruddy
    Kosc, Azpi, Huth
    Hendo, Sterling, Fab, Ozil
    Rooney (C), Adebayor, Benteke(vc)

    (Butland, Wanyama, Kaboul, Richards)

With 2.5 ITB to bring Aguero in for free.

    *Gambling on Ade > Villa
If not, can easily be swapped to Defoe/Sakho/Lambert/Bearhino

    **Penny for your thoughts?

Ade a big risk. i'm not a huge fan of Utd's form, so probably wouldn't run with Rooney and Tekkers hasn't played a game with LFC yet.... Ozil is having a flashy pre-season but don't think he is fantasy relevant at his price. otherwise looks good.

Very good overall, no Hazard could be an issue, Benteke might take time to settle in and get going.

Adebayor with no pre season behind him is a huge risk. Kaboul also faces competition from O'Shea and Coates

I don't like Ade or Rooney. But then Rooney proves me wrong every season, so go for it. I like the Fabregas over Hazard pick. Doing the same myself. He isn't worth the extra 2.5m... is he?

    Just a general footballing observation.

Kane seems to be a very level headed guy for his age. Handling the expectation and pressure well. Will Spurs be able to hold him for long?

Depends how this next season goes I guess. If he bangs in the goals again, the big boys will come sniffing.

To be fair, he really does seem like a genuine guys. No doubt Levy will be rubbing his hands together.

I'll no doubt start safe, balanced and sensible (boring) as usual. But I am so tempted by this, what do you think:

    Butland | Ruddy
    Ivanovic | Koscielny | Huth | 4.5 Sun Def | Mings
    Hazard | Walcott | Ramsey | Mata | Milner
    Pelle | Sakho | Wilson

Sakho and Wilson rotate brilliant fixtures. Milner could also be benched if I wanted to play both. Route to Aguero is Mata -> 4.5 mid, Pelle -> Aguero.

Cons: I would always have a 5.5+ player on the bench, but the team doesn't seem to suffer. The only issue I can see with it is the absence of Rooney. Rooney has been in all my drafts so far, but I'm beginning to doubt he'll start the season well based on what people are saying about his pre-season performances. I quite fancy Mata to be much better value (assuming MUN don't sign another attacking mid).

ah, Mata -> 4.5, Pelle -> Aguero doesn't add up. 1m short. So could start with Azpi instead of Ivan to make this up.

grateful for your review (1.5 ITB for upgrades after GW1)

    Mignolet (Ruddy)
    Azpli, Kos, Huth (Targett, O'Shea)
    Hazard, Sterling, Caz, Hendo (Fletcher)
    Giroud, Lukaku, Sakho

      Really nice team.

*Barring game week 1, Lukaku doesn't have the favorable fixtures. Better options out there, like Pelle.

      * Hendo to Chadli possibly

      * Targett short term move

      * Prefer Ozil to Cazorla, for now.

      * Not a fan of Rooney?

        Thanks FF.

Hendo kept surprising last year and I felt was more consistent than chadli. Targett is a money grab but you're right probably better options out there. Lukaku is short term might go the Pelle option. Not convinced by Utd and feel Rooney is a bit of a spent force. If Costa is fit, will likely go Giroud to Costa and downgrade Azpli to a 5.5 (either Merte or Shaw)

I also need a 4.5 rotating trio, and I'm having a real dilemma. Anyone else on Micah Richards? I currently have Richards-O'Shea-Morgan. Quite concerned about O'Shea following arrival of Kaboul, and Morgan following the arrival of the Tinkerman! And it looks like Micah isn't getting much love- injury record perhaps?

My team right now. Havent changed it much except some minor tweaks but have some slight issues. Would be glad to know your thoughts.

GK- Panti Mccarthy (Cant buy the 4.5 4.5 rotation)
DEF- IVA Kosc Huth Muniesa R.Bennett ( IVA Kosc for all matches, will try rotating Huth-Muniesa)
MID- Hazard Mane Ozil Milner Westwood ( Four are fixed. But is Westwood 4.5 a Good choice. I can change Milner-Westwood to Ritchie-Ki)
ATT- Rooney Defoe Kane ( The drawback is I will start Defoe every matches-first 4 gwks Although)

And strategy is to get Aguero after GW2/3, with 2 FTS by Upgrading Rooney-Kane and Downgrading Mane/Ozil/maybe the other striker.

I think buying a dead player at this point is a poor strategy. Personally I'd find the .5 elsewhere and in time if a 4.0 emerges I'd downgrade then.

I think you need that 7.0 slot there tbh,

      I like it.

Defence has a good balance of premium / budget
Mid feels a bit weaker with Chadli/Cattermole - but that's due to Hazards inclusion, not much you can really do. Three premiums. Altho, aren't there any alternatives to Cattermole?
      Attack, feels okay.

            Morgan : 2 goals/2 assists/10 cs/ 8bps
Leicesters top defensive scorer (112 pts) 3rd overall behind ulloa/Vardy.
            3.0 ppg

            Huth (arrived in January): 1 goal/6 cs/ 4bps (55pts)
            3.7 ppg

Conclusion: maybe Morgan's late start may be a blessing so.

I am surprised no other premier league teams have tried to take Dzeko. The guy is proven in the PL, just plays second string to Aguero, which is completely fair enough.

Regular starts and I think you'd be looking at 20+ goals a season.

Wouldn't start at Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, wouldn't go to Man U, Pool not good enough for him.

Pretty sure he's off to Roma, who are in the CL and compete for the title.

Think his deal to Roma is done. Just needs confirmation. I do hope he leaves, since he is a very decent player that needs gametime. When he played , he scored more than 15 goals. Not sure what changed.

Difficult to maintain consistency when you're in and out of the team, I suppose. I also think he's be best served as a lone striker, rather than a partnership. Not the best use of his talents when he ended up playing deeper.

Funny player though. Sometimes he looks deadly and seems to score effortlessly and other times he just sort of wanders around aimlessly getting all frustrated. Seems unusually reliant on the quality of service to him.

      Agree with all your comments

I could see him doing well at most clubs (excluding say, Chelsea, Arsenal, United. Would be swapping one bench for another)

I think he'd be an upgrade on Pelle, Soldado (obv), could also see him doing well at Liverpool.

'I think he can build up the game better from that position and he has defended very well.

'I think I shall use him there but also in midfield and the left back positon but I'm pleased with his performances here.'

I was just wondering if there would be any interest in this type of mini league. Basically the idea is that I would create a 2nd team that starts in GW2 and try to chase down all of the GW1 starters in my league. If at any point (this includes Saturday updates for example) you are caught by me, you would be removed from the league and the winners would be the ones who stay ahead of me for the entire season. This may sound quite an easy challenge however I'd be able to start at Saturday 11:30 and get all the price risers in my team and have about £0.5m more team value than every other player come the start of GW2.

    Anyone interested?

Downgrade one of Terry or Ivanovic to Mertesacker (for example) and then use the 1.5m to upgrade Targett and the 4.0.

Strong midfield, although Chadli is inconsistent and Andreu is a question mark.

Up front, I like Aguero/Benteke. Do you have a GW1 plan since Aguero looks unlikely to start?

So where will John Stones end up? If it's Chelsea will he get a regular game?

United and City sniffing around too. It would be better for FPL surely if he went to Manchester.

Of course I hope he stays at Goodison but it looks like someone will stump up the needed cash for him.

Chelsea will tell him to bide his time behind Terry for one season, and then he'll play regular football next season

There's still Cahill and Zouma about, though.

Zouma will oust Cahill out of the team sooner rather then later

That would still leave Stones competing with Cahill, and Cahill is better, imo.

I don't think he's yet good enough to be starting for a bigger team, so I think he'd be best off getting game time at Everton. Everton look keen to hold on to him as well.

    Koeman on Bertrand yesterday

“He is close to being on the bench. He’s still not training with the rest of the players. He needs more time. He looks like he will be back faster than we thought in the beginning.”

Not good news for Targett ....

Silly question. For a penalty save must the GK touch the ball? Is a miss considered a save?

Can I get opinions on this one?

    Butland - Ruddy

    Ivan - Kosc - Francis - Huth - O'Shea

    Hazard - Walcott - Ozil/Fabregas (???) - Mane - Wanyama

    Rooney - Sakho - Wilson

Sterling instead of either. It would give you some City coverage. Unless you wanted to avoid that until GW4?

I'm not convinced with the fixtures. But Sterling seems like a right call.

Which 4.5 goalkeeper combo are people going with?

None of them seem to rotate well enough to justify saving the 0.5 and not just going with Courtois and a 4.0.

      Ruddy / Butland
