Scout Report – Jordan Ayew

Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

    Morning all

Please rate my team for me

    Ruddy - Butland

    Ivanovic - Clyne - Mertersacker (Subs) S Taylor - R Oxford

Hazard - Sterling - Milner - Ozil (Subs) Coquelin

    Benteke - Rooney - Deeney

Bit light on the subs but struggling to get my desired mids without a weak bench...

This comes out with a RMT of 306 for the first 6 weeks (55 week 1)

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Oooh nice to see some different picks in there. Ayew and Jurado is risky but could pay off. I'd look to tested PL players initially and then trade in if they perform.

Yeah I had Milner instead of Ayew in there but I thought two Pool players was a bit riskier than bringing Ayew in, and Jurado rotates great with Wilson. Haven't really looked too much into that, but at 5.5 appears to be the best pick - playing in a more forward position as well.

      Sakho->Wilson
      Walcott->Caz/ozil

      gives you 2.5 for Fab->Haz

Man City's first 3 - West brom, Tony pulis will run a tight ship and a 0-0 or 1-0 either way is more than likely. Chelsea at home, again Mourinho has a track record of getting a bore draw in these games. Everton away, defensively Everton can be sound, difficult to predict how many goals, but I expected no more than 2... I think getting any man city attackers during this period ismanbig risk? Surely wait until GW4. Or invest into Man City defenders.

Fernando Llorente’s agent has been in talks with Arsenal in the last few days, according to Tuttosport.

The Spanish striker is set to leave Juventus and the Gunners, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old.

I'm seeing a large variety in GK choices - suprisingly so in fact.
Last season I recall there was a Panti-4.0 rotation that was almost flawless.
Whats your GK set and any reasoning? Safer to play 2 from 1 team, or rotating?

I'm rotating Butland and Ruddy at the mo. Not particularly happy about it but I don't like spending more than 9m on keepers at this stage and it's one of the few rotations which doesn't include Villa, who I think will be a car crash defensively, or Palace, because I don't rate Pardew defensively, and might have a decent combination of CS and save points. I think Jonty made quite a good argument for it last night on the RMT surgery.

    Courtois - Speroni

Hazard - Depay - Sterling- Ritchie - Wijnaldum
    Kane - Berahino - Deeney

Get rid of Coleman asap. Those fixtures are terrible. Berahino is a gamble, as he's heavily linked to Spurs atm. Deeney, Wijna and Ritchie are all untested at this level. One punt too many imo

nice team, wouldn't do Oz and Wally tho. There's lots of options out there in MID this year. Not convinced with NEW and Janmaat this year, but I understand the rotation pairing.

So you're going to alternate 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 week to week?

And I've never been a fan of planning a WC, just use it when you need it.

not sure on matthews, but i think he should be 1st choice at RB, i just like janmaats attacking potential so hence that choice.
purely based on pre season and fixtures, ozil and wally have looked good to begin with, and can easily change to city/utd coverage further in
potentially 343 and 352 with ritchie and sakho rotating nicely for the first 8 weeks
yeh the WC is by no means locked in, but i can see it being used early

Hello. First time post - point 1 has moved me to register just to share my confusion having enjoyed the site silently for many years.

    1) What has Milner ever, ever done to make people think he'll score any serious points?
    2) When did the term nailed-on get abbreviated to nailed?
    3) When did the term double-pivot become a thing?
    4) Loving the work of Eboue.

      1) 5 goals and 8 assists in only 1749 minutes last season - when played centrally previously at Villa - 7 goals 12 assists

      2) Depends who is posting

      3) Been around at least a few seasons 🙂

Or to look at it another way, he managed 5 goals playing in midfield for the most attacking team in the league. Lampard turned up for 10 minutes here and there and still out-scored him.

He was a good option when at Villa. Some people's opinion on that is just soured by captaining him in that DGW when he got injured in the first game!

Thanks. It looks like if you can get a nailed on Sunderland defender, 4.5 will be a bargain if they defend like the end of last season!!! I might put my lottery ticket on Coates, rather than O'Shea who is getting on a bit...

O'Shea is club captain, he did very well towards the end of last season, and the manager must still have plenty of faith in him. I think he's nailed. It's a toss up between the other 2, Coates started the last 6 games in the league, and they've turned the loan into a permanent deal, they must rate him.

Trying to work out with a way to upgrade Ozil to Walcott (unless someone can give me a compelling reason not to). So here are two possible ways of doing it.

Ozil and Chadli -> Lens and Walcott

Sakho, Ozil, SUN(4.5) -> Wilson, Walcott, Cedric

Do either of those seem worth it? Or just stick with good old Mesut?

    1. Prøphet
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

Both of those dont seem worth it to me tbh. Any other options? Do you have a 4.0 anywhere? If so maybe consider doing a 8.5 GK or 9.0 depends what u have

      1. Lucy.
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

I have no 4.0s, nor am I particularly keen on getting one in 😉

Depending on how long or short term you're planning. Ozil and Cazorla will be one of the first names on the team sheet every single game if they're fit. But Walcott has more attacking returns and should start the season until Sanchez gets introduced back in, then you have the Ox competing with him. As well as Welbeck and Giroud up top. I'm sticking with the nailed on Ozil. Wenger has said recently he plans to play him in the number 10 role instead of down the right, this should enhance his attacking potential.
