Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Thursday

Southampton sweep aside Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long. Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate net for the Hammers but a lack of discipline costs Slaven Bilic’s side dearly, whilst Patrick Bamford hits a 20-minute hat-trick as Palace put six past Bromley Town.

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

The Saints impressed at both ends of the pitch as Ronald Koeman’s side edged towards the Europa League group stages with a comprehensive win at St Mary’s. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic (penalty) and substitute Shane Long all found the net, with Sadio Mane supplying a pair of assists before new boy Juanmi teed up Long for the third.

Koeman named Maarten Stekelenburg in goal, with a back-four comprised of Cedric Soares, Maya Yoshida, José Fonte and Matt Targett. Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama sat in the double-pivot, whilst Steven Davis, Mane and Tadic Dušan tucked in behind lone striker Pelle. New boy Soares caught the eye with a number of raiding runs down the right, whilst Yoshida was unlucky not to find the net after missing a handful of opportunities.

After the match, Koeman highlighted his key performers:

“Jordy had a good understanding with Victor, who I thought was one of the best players on the pitch in my opinion. Cedric had good movements in the first half. He was dangerous in the attacking position. Maarten made a good save at 2-0 and you always like to have the goalkeeper in that kind of important moment saving the team. Mane was outstanding. He is fast and he had good movements in attack. He’s very difficult to defend in a good way against. He played well.”

The Saints boss conceded that Clasie is a doubt for the season opener at Newcastle after the midfielder was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem. Given that the return leg against Vitesse is just three days before their trip to St James’ Park, last night’s result may well persuade Koeman to rest some of his key players to avoid further injury headaches.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

Goals from Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate had placed Slaven Bilic’s side in the driving seat before the dismissal of James Collins allowed the visitors to claw back a two-goal deficit.

In terms of team selection, Bilic lined his side up in a 4-3-1-2 set-up, according to the club’s twitter feed. Adrian got the nod in goal, with O’Brien, Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in the back-four. Mark Noble, Reece Oxford and Cheikhou Kouyate patrolled the central midfield, with Dimitri Payet (who grabbed the assist for Valencia’s opener) handed the role in “the hole” behind the Ecuadorian and Zarate.

Bilic was unable to call upon suspended pair James Tomkins and Diafra Sakho for this one and will now need to make do without Collins and Joey O’Brien for the return leg next Thursday. The latter earned his third yellow of the tournament before being replaced due to injury, whilst Valencia was also forced off, adding to his manager’s woes.

Post-match, Bilic admitted he was somewhat concerned by Valencia’s injury after the forward – playing his first match since the Copa America – was stretchered off:

“I am worried to be fair. And this is the reason I am unhappy tonight. I am not happy with the result of course but this is not as important as the injury. It looks serious but we won’t know for sure until he has a scan.”

In spite of the draw, though, the Hammers boss confirmed that most of his starters for the Gameweek 1 trip to Arsenal will not take part in next Thursday’s return leg:

“It was the same plan, no matter what the result is, that the majority of the players who will start against Arsenal will not participate in that game. We would like to do both, but the Premier League was and is the priority for us.”

The Croatian faces a real defensive dilemma for the return leg next week, then. With Collins, Tomkins and O’Brien all suspended, he could turn to Reece Burke in light of his above comments. Carl Jenkinson is likely to play in O’Brien’s absence, though the former cannot feature against his parent club at the Emirates. With O’Brien a doubt for the Arsenal clash, the Hammers could be severely hampered at right-back for the opening day of the season, having also allowed Guy Demel to leave over the summer. Given that Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature for the hosts, Arsene Wenger may well choose to unleash Theo Walcott down the Arsenal left to take advantage.

Bromley Town 0 Crystal Palace 6

Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as the Eagles ran riot at Bromley Arena. The on-loan Chelsea striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick before being replaced at the break, whilst Sullay Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha also added their names to the score sheet.

Alan Pardew mainly called upon players who had failed to earn much pitch time in the club’s recent tour of South Africa. Alex McCarthy got the nod in goal, with a back-four of Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Luke Croll and Christian Scales. Zaha, Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Kaikai made up the midfield, allowing Gayle and Bamford to take their places up front. The Eagles boss made seven changes over the course of the second period, though Yannick Bolasie has yet to feature in recent matches due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

Are there any players whom you think are must haves this season ?

Personally I feel Hazard and Kane will do really well this time around

I thought about doing without Hazard having had him for three years solid. Problem is I think he may actually get better than ever this season.

Early WC if I'm doing bad overall. Downgrade a mid and replace Costa/Rooney if things are going well. Not ideal, but I would like to see what Aguero does first.

I don't know how to free up funds for any. Think Butland will do the job for the first few weeks until i get someone that is performing better. Plus i don't like GK rotations so all i need is one starting keeper.

    Kane vs Benteke

    Kane:

    Pros
    - fantastic record last season
    - main man for a top team, everything goes through him, 100% nailed on
    - on pens
    - can score against anyone

    Cons
    - bad form at end of last season and in U21s over summer
    - expensive
    - worry over attacking threat/creativity in the Spurs team

    Benteke:

    Pros
    - proven premiership goalscorer
    - better supply and attacking players than at Villa
    - good early home fixtures
    - cheap

    Cons
    - competition for his place especially when Sturridge returns
    - injury prone
    - tough away starting fixtures
    - worries of not fitting Liverpool system

Not much between these two but might start with Tekkers as the extra 1mil is very nice.

    Thoughts?

Ozil gets extra points for key passes and creating big chances, so is a great long term pick. You've got 16 free transfers to use in August though, so there's definitely merit to starting with Theo.

Hi guys, Unlike a lot of people I’ve went for a strong GK and two strong defenders. I actually really like my team as I wanted to build it around Rooney, Giroud and Rambo. However, I am not happy with having Schneiderlin (5.5m). Has anyone got any suggestions?

    Courtois
    Azpi Kosc Mings Huth
    Rambo Haz Hendo
    Rooney Giroud(c) Wilson

    My dilemma.

    1) Ozil + Sterling
    or
    2) Walcott + Yaya Toure

    equal cost.

    1) Great pre-season form, Ozil looking better than ever and Sterling looking pretty explosive.
    2) Guaranteed returns from Walcott if he plays but would be banking on a resurgence of the 13/14 Yaya.

Would love to hear people's thoughts.

assurance is the perfect word, that is how I have my team right now and it feels like the sensible decision , just would hate to miss out on a walcott blinder, either way I am sure Ozil will be involved in some way.

I'm going Myhill as my No.1 keeper. WBA kept cleanies against Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea (they might already have won the title tbf) at the end of last season so wouldn't want to miss potential hauls against City, Che this time around.

Might still select a 4.5 though. Injuries happen. Also when Foster comes back, no guarantee Pulis will tell us exactly when he'll start. Even if he does, I might not have room around current transfers to bring him in without a hit.

Overall defensive ownership by team based on current ownership % (including only #1 keepers, and top 4 selected defenders per club). Obviously this doesn't take into account potential double-ups.

    In descending order

    CHE 19.6%
    ARS 12.2%
    LIV 12.2%
    EVE 11.8%
    SOU 7.4%
    MUN 6.3%
    MCY 6.2%
    AVL 6.1%
    CPL 5.8%
    LEI 5.3%
    SWA 4.7%
    NEW 4.6%
    TOT 4.2%
    SUN 3.5%
    WHU 3.0%
    BOU 2.7%
    STK 2.6%
    WBA 2.6%
    NOR 2.5%
    WAT 0.8%

Right off the bat...that WBA ownership surprises me.

Would really appreciate some imput here! I've hit a brick wall, looking for some southampton coverage- need to somehow fund bringing pelle/cedric/mane in?

Which area of this team would you downgrade to allow either 1) Sahko --> Pelle or 2) Hendo --> Mane or 3) Francis --> cedric

    Butland

    Azpil / Huth / Francis

    Hazard / Ozil / Sterling / Hendo

    Costa / Rooney / Sahko

Cheers lads! Post your team below and I'll have a look at it 🙂

I would Costa> Kane or Benteke, unless you want to hold Rooney to go alongside Aguero.

You mean downgrade costa? Yeh I was thinking about that but just feel its tough not having him in- that was my plan- was gonna play aguero/rooney up front so dont wanna risk the funds :/ See my dilemme now?

Only other solution I can think of is to downgrade sterling to mane to free up some funds

The third striker slot is proving to be quite a tricky one. With Kane and Rooney nailed on in my team, I'm having to look in the sub-7m price bracket for the third striker spot in order to ensure good team balance. Sakho is the highest on my list, but will he be reliable to be played game in and game out? He's at best a goal in three kind of a guy, no? I guess he could be decent 'value' but I'm not sure he's worth occupying a permanent spot in the front 7.

Who are you guys going with for the third striker spot?

28 appearances for West Ham, 14 goals, 2 assists.

Should be nailed on as the main striker now though, with Carroll and Valencia injuries, two great home fixtures in the first three, then see how it goes from there.

I'm in the exact same situation mate, I'm in Wazza - Kane - Sakho at the moment

Enner picked up an injury last night, making Sakho even more nailed. Sakho has two great fixtures in GW2 and 3, and Arsenal can be shaky on the opening day, too. Sakho is also 6.5 million, so all the strikers in the 5.5/6.5 price envelope are easily available using just 1 free transfer. I'm gonna follow the logic and give him a go, and if he's not doing great after GW 3, I will sell for whoever is in form of the 5.5/6.5 strikers.
