Moving Target

Moving Target – Andre Wisdom

Deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom penned a season-long loan deal with Norwich City last week. Talking to the club’s official website, the 22-year-old insisted that’s he’s in prime shape for a Premier League start:

“I spoke to the manager, and he’s told me what he wants from myself and the team collectively. It’s going to be good and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve maintained a high fitness level because I’ve been on tour with Liverpool, so I’m coming here fit and ready to go. I’m hoping to help the team by contributing on and off the pitch.”

The History

Born in Leeds, Wisdom started out at Bradford City’s youth academy, before making the switch to Liverpool at the age of 14. Having worked his way up the ranks, Wisdom established himself as a regular starter for the Reds’ reserve team at centre-back.

The installation of Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield hot seat led to Wisdom’s promotion to the first team. After earning his senior debut during Liverpool’s 5-2 demolition of Norwich in September 2012, he went on to notch a further 11 starts at right-back that term, serving up one assist in the process.

A lack of starting opportunities on Merseyside prompted Wisdom to spend the 2013/14 season on loan to Championship outfit Derby County. Upon his switch to the Rams in October, he started and finished every league encounter, bagging three assists across 33 outings.

Wisdom teamed up with West Bromwich Albion for the 2014/15 Premier League season, where he enjoyed the security of starts under Alan Irvine, chalking up one assist in 18 appearances. Irvine’s sacking and the subsequent hiring of Tony Pulis engendered a reduction in his playing time, with Wisdom mustering just three more starts that term.

On the international stage, Wisdom has turned out a total of 37 times at youth level, from England U16 to 21, and found the net on three occasions.

The Prospects

Wisdom spent the last year of his youth spell at Liverpool operating at centre-back but has since exclusively been fielded in the right-back berth. Alex Neil’s comments regarding Wisdom’s arrival at Carrow Road suggest he favours him in the latter role:

“I’m delighted as Andre fits our profile in terms of getting hungry players in who want to make their way in the game. He’s also had Premier League experience with a few different clubs, so we’re happy to get it over the line. It will add to the competition for places as he’s a flexible player. In the past he’s played centre-back and right-back. Having added competition to the left-hand side with Robbie Brady, it was important to add something to the right side as well.”

Indeed, Wisdom’s first run-out for the Norfolk club was at right-back: he clocked 30 minutes during a pre-season debut against Brentford at the weekend, emerging from the bench to tee up Cameron Jerome for an emphatic winner.

Wisdom looks set to challenge Steven Whittaker for starts at right-back, with Russell Martin and Sebastien Bassong forming Neil’s first-choice centre-back pairing. With no certainty that Norwich’s latest arrival will be handed a run at the start of the season, few Fantasy managers will be tempted to snap up the 4.5-priced defender from the off.

Across his 2080 minutes of pitch time last season, Wisdom fashioned just three (off-target) attempts at goal, while Whittaker and Martin both served up two goals apiece, albeit in the Championship. Furthermore, Wisdom executed a paltry nine key passes for his team-mates, bagging one assist along the way. Whittaker (five), Martin (five) and Olsson (six) all surpassed that assist haul, with the former ranking fourth for key passes (38) among Norwich’s full roster.

Indeed, with just two assists in 38 appearances in the Premier League to his name, Wisdom offers little in the way of attacking potential. Even if he nails down a starting berth, then, his lack of impact in the final third suggests he may have to rely on clean sheets for points but with the changes to the BPS scoring system favouring the similarly-priced John Ruddy between the sticks, Wisdom’s appeal looks limited. Indeed, given that there are options at the likes of Sunderland and Leicester at the same cost, Norwich’s defenders may struggle to justify any level of investment.

Nonetheless, those Fantasy managers eyeing up the Canaries backline in light of their decent early schedule (CRY, sun, STO, sou, BOU, liv) might be inclined to source a budget rotation partner to exploit their kind home fixtures. On that note, Stoke City alternate well with the Canaries, furnishing us with just five match-ups against last term’s top-six sides leading into the New Year. With the schedule smiling kindly, it’s little wonder that many on the site are eyeing up a Ruddy/Jack Butland cut-price pairing between the posts at a cost of just 9.0, with the prospect of save points, at the least, looking more enticing.

Milner - he's going to be very hungry. After years of partial employment he'll revel in his role at Liverpool.

Milner. Pochettino will be willing to experiment with Pritchard, Winks and Onomah. There is chance Chadli might not get a full 90 minutes. Milner will provide plenty of assists this season as he might take corners.

Looking at Silva's stats from last year he looks stronger than Hazard. Would have scored more points i he played the same minutes. Also had a lot more shots in the box than I expected and still 3rd in chances created. Although Sterling might eat into his points this year...

    Butland - Schwartzer

    Aspi - Kosc - Huth ( Coates - Targett)

Hazard - Cazorla - Ozil - Milner (Wanyama)

    Rooney - Lukaku - Pelle

Plan to get Kun by downgrading Caz/Ozil to Chadli & Lukaku/Rooney to Sakho & Kun

Any criticism on team or plan is welcome

I'd have at least one £9m mid so you've got a lot of flexibility in midfield. Walcott over Caz/Ozil
Lukaku is only really worth having for one week so I'd pick someone more long term.

hi everyone.......I saw few questions and posts regarding defenders and as others, Im looking for 4.5m def options. i thought of opening a discussion here if u r willing (sorry for the long post). Hope it will be benefitial.

    1. What are the back 4 for Stoke? any of Muniesa, bardsley, cameron or even wilson nailed??

    2. What are the back 4 for aston villa? anyone nailed yet?

    3. What are the back 4 for swansea? any chance rangel or bartley nailed although that is a very small chance.

    4. What are the back 4 for west ham? collins or o'brien nailed?

    5. What are the back for west brom? olsson or pocognoli nailed?

Easier options are newcastle, sunderland (really poor defence) and promoted teams defenders (People here considered norwish and bourn)

    6. Norwish or bourn defence?

    7. If norwish, Bassong, wisdom or martin?

    8. If bourn, Francis or mings?

If this post succeeded Ill try another with 4.0m defenders

Aguero and Sanchez are well worth taking point hits for so use all the budget you have now. Hazard over Fab would make bringing in Sanchez much easier.
        Ibe -> 4.5m who's more nailed on.

If you plan to play 4-3-3 most weeks this is a solid team.

        1. AIRMILES

          Thank you.
I'll likely play 4-4-2. I think Ibe is a worthy punt as I think he'll play and, if he does, will go up in value - though he will be deployed on my bench. I also think Sanchez and Aguero will be back very early, so not keen on not having money available. That said, I'm considering upgrading a midfielder for GW1 to be downgrade for cash for GW2. I am also thinking of Hazard, but if Fab outscores him in the first couple of weeks, and worried a lot of Haz owners will downgrade to Fab, brining the former's value down.
          Thanks for comments.

      Koscielny, Huth, Clyne, Cedric, Mings
      Ozil, Hazard, Sterling, Ritchie, Jurado

        - Not a fan of double Arsenal defence because you can't easily get 2 Arsenal attackers if they start well
        - Spend less in defence to upgrade one of Ritchie, Okazaki and Lukaku
        - Use all your budget

      Fabianski - Schmeichel

      Azpilicueta - Koscielny - Mings - Prodl - Cedric

      Mane - Cazorla - Fabregas - Chadli - Ritchie

      Kane - Benteke - Pelle

I'm always open to another opinion.
      Cheers in advance

        - Have 1 promoted defender maximum because they aren't likely to keep many clean sheets.
        - Your team lacks the flexibility to easily bring in Aguero.
        - Downgrade Ritchie to a 4.5m because you'll never play him with those other 7 players.

        1. Clangers
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

I see where youre coming from but the reasoning behind each is
          - Mings & Prodl both rotate perfectly, meaning that if the top 3 defenders that I have have tough fixtures, I shall always have a promoted defender ready and waiting with a good fixture, or in desperate times they could be used for the fourth defender.
          - The Aguero plan is to simply downgrade either Fabregas or Cazorla to a 5.5/5/4.5 midfielder and then upgrade either Kane or Benteke depending on which is downgrade. This will leave me with a midfield of Fabregas/Cazorla - Mane - Chadli - Ritchie.

Cheers for the advice though mate.

        - You don't really want to play one of Ighalo and Jerome every week because they are in no way prolific scorers.
        - You'll have 2 spend two transfers to buy a mid priced forward if they hit form
        - Silva -> Sterling give you a bit more flexibility and imo a better points scorer

So much uncertainty with playing sensibly.

I'll go for the wrong Arsenal midfielder, bonus points will come out to suit the position I haven't invested enough in and Aguero will score a brace as a sub forcing me to take a few hits to get him in.

Bamford only playing today as was scheduled to play Saturday but missed the game with a knock. Wickham because they want to get some minutes into him and play him with Bamford

    Schmi (Myhill)
    Kos Fonte Clyne (O'Shea Targett)
    Haz Ozil Mane Hendo (Ki)
    Aguero Wilson Sakho

I think that it's best, in the long term, to secure Aguero at the start. All it would take is a 0.1mil increase in his price to force selling an extra 0.5mil worth of a player to fit him in, weakening your team further an leaving you with an inefficient and awkward 0.4mil in the bank! What do you guys think?

Some of the posts on here about planning wildcards and when they are going to use the new features, are clearly pointless at this stage. I am all for planning my transfers and rotations etc. But planning on wildcard use in a specific week isn't efficient. Surely you should be trying to pick the team that will score you points over a sustained time. Then your wildcard can be used for serious problems in your team.

I don't mean to sound so preachy, maybe someone could explain their thinking to me?

I always use my WC early. I find early on is one of the most effective times, as I'll use it to change circa 10 players. Otherwise it's most effective before a DGW late int he season. Also, I just can't help myself but use it early on. I'm weak, I know.

And, this year we can't use our original WC for the late season DGW. Use it or lose it. We will have so much more information in a month than we do now. It's a second shot at setting up your team, but this time with a lot more known.

You are right, but only up to a point, IMHO.

Essentially, planning when to use the first WC is an exercise in playing the fixtures. Norwich, for instance, has great fixtures. I've currently got a Rudd/y GK duo with the thought that'll be gone before playing any of last year's big 4. Early WCing is especially attractive this year given the perceived need to get in Aguero before GW 4 (WAT).

Where I think that you are right is that taking this strategy too far can leave a player inflexible. I'm still staying away from players that I know I'll need to transfer, e.g. Targett, and if I can delay my WC to GW 7, all the better.

All interesting points. I understand the concept that people are going for, but you may just get it spot on first time, then what a waste of planning. It isn't worth the effort until we have seen who is going places. Your planned transfer could break his leg before he is in your team.

B is what I have right now, so you're probably better off with A...

My thinking, though: Wait and see on the promoted strikers; they could be Austin or Ings or Ebanks-Blake. Also, I think Arsenal will concede, obviously could be wrong. And, I think Rooney is underpriced now that he is nailed on as a center forward.
