Scout Report – Jordan Veretout

Tim Sherwood continued his shopping spree on Friday by securing the services of £8 million box-to-box midfielder Jordan Veretout from Ligue 1 side Nantes. The Frenchman penned a five-year deal and is amongst a raft of nine summer signings by the Aston Villa manager.

The Midlands side fought off stiff competition from Leicester, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to pull off the signing and Sherwood was particularly chuffed that Veretout chose to ply his trade at Villa Park:

“I’m really pleased Jordan decided to choose Aston Villa over the other options he had and opt to continue his development with us. He is only 22 years old but he is vastly experienced for someone that age. He has played over 140 games in Ligue 1 and is a really exciting young player. I know he is very highly rated over in France so we are delighted to get this deal over the line.”

THE HISTORY

After joining the Nantes youth side in 2003, at the age of 10, Veretout worked his way up through the ranks to earn his first professional cap in May 2011. However it was during the 2011-12 campaign that the midfielder finally cemented a starting role. As well as playing further upfield, Veretout occupied a defensive midfield role diligently and started all but five of Nantes’ Ligue 2 matches.

In the following two seasons, the 22-year-old filled a variety of midfield roles and was a focal part of the promotion-winning squad of 2013. The chopping and changing of Veretout’s role prevented him from finding any consistent attacking output as he only managed two goals during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.

Last season, though, he picked up in consistency and quickly began to be considered one of France’s hottest young talents. The central midfielder enjoyed a purple patch during the first 18 league matches, picking up six goals and five assists. Although that productivity tailed off in the middle of the campaign, Veretout netted once and picked up an assist in the final two fixtures to silence any doubters.

The new Villa man is yet to receive a senior international cap but was part of the side that triumphed in the 2013 Under-20 World Cup. Since then the youngster has moved up into the Under-21 squad, making eight appearances.

THE PROSPECTS

With the likes of Fabian Delph and former loanee Tom Cleverley now elsewhere, Sherwood urgently needed to address his side’s problems in the centre of the park. Having acquired Idrissa Gueye, the Villa boss will be hoping for Veretout to carry a major goal threat in light of his stand-out season in Ligue 1 last term. Likened to Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, the new boy is keen to make his mark:

“I am flattered to read that people think I remind them of Aaron. He is a very good midfield player. But at the same time, I am my own player and play my own game. I want to develop here at Aston Villa. I feel I am a player with big activity – I like to be heavily involved in things. I like to be creative – making goals for my team-mates. That pleases me a lot. But, also, I love scoring goals myself!”

Crucially, the Frenchman’s versatility should help secure a spot in Sherwood’s first XI for the season ahead. His ability to fill any central role, be it defensive or attacking, and even occupy a wider position will afford him a higher chance of grabbing one of those starting places. Sherwood has utilized 4-3-3, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 over the summer and the ex-Nantes man could slot into any of those formations. The former two look the most favourable with three central roles up for grabs; Veretout could play in either the anchor or wider positions of a 4-3-3 and in the central roles of a 4-4-2, or even behind the striker, should Sherwood choose to shift Jordan Ayew onto the flank.

Delving into the data, the Frenchman created an impressive 72 goalscoring chances last term, more than new midfield team-mates Ashley Westwood and Carlos Sanchez combined. Furthermore, no Villa midfielder managed more than Veretout’s 52 shots or seven goals last season but, as mentioned above, he can be very streaky, and Fantasy managers may wait for Veretout to hit a purple patch before investing.

A price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may prove enough of a deterrent for most, though. Scott Sinclair’s weekend hat-trick strengthened his claim as a viable budget midfielder and, at a price of just 5.0, the winger’s current form should ensure Veretout remains under the radar for now.

With matches at home to Sunderland and West Brom as well as trips to newly promoted Bournemouth and Leicester in the opening five Gameweeks, though, Veretout is afforded the chance of impressing early on. Providing he can continue his Ligue 1 form, the Frenchman is definitely one to watch during this term’s opening Gameweeks.

Is this any good? Only planning first 3 GW, then happy to use WC if needed during international break:

    Panit / 4.0
Azpi - Mertesaker - Gomez (Huth, Targett)
Hazard - Milner - Sterling - Walcott (Wanyama)
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

    Possible changes on my mind:

    1) Gomez > Nailed on 4.5 (As a Liverpool fan I think Gomez will play though)
    2) Milner > Chadli
    3) Benteke > Lukaku or Pelle (Just GW1 if Benteke looks unlikely to play)

I would start Huth over Gomez in GW1 so probably 1. Option 3 if Benteke doesn't make it.

Lukaku to Benteke GW2. Alternatively I could start Benteke and get Ulloa instead of Sakho before gw2.

    Ruddy
    Ivan, Kosc, Cedric
    Haz, Ozil, Sterling, Mahrez
    Rooney, Benteke, Wilson

    Butland, Francis, Ki, Baker

    0.0m ITB

    Butland - Ruddy
    Azpi - Merte - Toby - Huth - Matthews
    Fab - Ozil - Depay - Hendo - Anya
    Costa - Rooney - Wilson

1m ITB to be saved for Costa --> Aguero (along with Merte --> 4.5m)

    @Lucy RE: Francis v Mings

Howe has been doing this all summer:

Philadelphia: Francis, Mings, and Atsu start different halves than Wilson and Ritchie

Exeter: Mings, Surman, Atus start different halves than Francis, Ritchie, and Wilson

Nantes: Francis, Ritchie, Surman, and Wilson start

    Yeovil: Mings and Atsu start

ShipsonTrev has been recommending Francis, so I'll stick

Agreed. Francis is nailed and Mings is probably the more risky pick due to Daniels (first choice LB last year) being his competition.

My concern over Francis is that he's 30 years old and has never played in the premier league. He may well find it difficult to adapt to the step up in quality and changed responsibilities.

think we've changed opinions on walcott far too much based on 1 match, a match against the best defence in the league. in classic walcott style he still came away with an assist despite a quiet game.
like the fa cup final it's another start up front instead of giroud. should giroud suddenly start against west ham i just can't see oxlade chamberlain playing instead of walcott. there's no question who is the starter in a shoot-out between those players as far as i'm concerned even with chamberlain looking good in pre-season. walcott is the more senior man of the pair, the first-teamer

      • 12 Years

Yeah i'm coming back to walcott again. Ox is only 21 and Wally has waited patiently to get proper chances after his long layoff. I suppose he will start whether it be upfront or on the wing

True. I think both Giroud and Walcott will start myself.

West Ham at home just suits Giroud, with Walcott playing off him on the right, Ozil/Caz/Ramsey behind

I think Walcott is more effective from the right hand side too. He will start the season in first XI then depending on his performances may or may not be rotated/rested

Well he'll definitely be rotated/rested when Sanchez is fit.

Hello y'all. This is my first post. I've been tinkering for a long time and changed the draft dozens of times. How does my team look?

    Ruddy / Butland
    Cedric / Francis / Huth / Coates / Jenkinson
    Hazard / Ramsey / Depay / Sterling / Wanyama
    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho

Which one would you opt for?

    A) Coates + Azpilicueta + Benteke

    OR

    B) Koscielny + Ivanovic + Callum Wilson

B for me, what about Ivan + Wilson -> Azpi + Sakho?

    Can I get an RMT?

    ----------------------Butland/Ruddy-----------------------

    ------- Azp - Bellerin - Jenkinson/Huth - (4.0) ------

    -----Hazard - Walcott - Tadic - Mahrez - (4.5) -----

    -------------- Rooney - Benteke - Kane ---------------

    0 ITB

All advice and recommendations are highly appreciated

    Cheers 🙂

Mahrez a bit punty for me. Kane a bit expensive. Just my opinion.

Its all very solid. For me, I would swap out either Kane or Benteke for someone a bit cheaper, and bump up either Tadic or Mahrez to a bigger hitter. Benteke to Bamford/Deeney/Wilson and you could get Sterling inthere who has been decent in pre-season

    can someone rate my team

    Fab Schimeichel
    Azp Kos Cedric Bassong S.Taylor
    Fab Sterling Hendo Walcott (Wanyama)
    Sakho Pelle Costa

I am now not so sure about costa due to mourinho's comment, but I can easily change to kane and hendo>ozil

Hi guys - thoughts on the following:

    Schmeichel - (Butland)
    Mertesacker - Azpi - Huth - (Cresswell - Saylor)
    Mata - Walcott - Yaya - Mane - (Westwood)
    Rooney - Benteke - Pelle

    Sensible suggestions most welcome.

Poor GK rotation. Otherwise sound. Would say Ruddy over Schmeichel.

Mata and Yaya will certainly provide a differential, if a bit punty.

I might be swayed on him, but it depends on a couple of things.

          1. Where he plays, DM or AM. If he's given the freedom of AM then he could be a points machine.

          2. Legs. if he's in at DM or asked to do box to box will he have the stamina to get forward as much as he used to?

          3. Desire. He looked fed up at times last season.

always looks a solid 8/10 keeper to me. seems more steady rather than incredible saves and the odd howler. a friedel rather than a barthez

    A - Young - Benteke
    B - Sterling - Wilson(Bournemouth)

Do you think Sterling will have to settle for the bench now and then?

Pant 4.0 is by far the best IMO. He's the best keeper FPL-wise, with incredible fixtures for CS/save points/BAPs.

Throwing a poll of the best ars mid at 8.5 so it can help people decide, including me. Which midfielder looked the best yesterday?

    A: Cazorla
    B: Ramsey
    C: Ozil

Caz, purely down to corners, free kicks, pens and the odd canny pass.

ozil created the most chances, cazorla created the best chance, and ramsey looked the closest to scoring. still a confusing choice
