Sky Sports Focus – Captaincy Analysis

In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we assess our captaincy options. This includes the various ways you can change your captain and also incorporates our preferred strategy up until the end of September. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the armband

Fantasy managers are handed ONE swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Friday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Thursday. This is different from last season, to take into account Friday matches, which occurs in Gameweek 2 when Villa host United. The trick here, of course, is to have your captained player featuring early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player who takes to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player you selected as your captain for the Sunday/Monday should ideally play next week on the Saturday.

Banking

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap – for example your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday look appealing. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to use your swap after the fixtures but before the current Gameweek has finished (best to wait up until Thursday evening in case of injuries etc) to set yourself up for the incoming rounds of fixtures choosing a player who features early of course.

Transferring Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and acquire a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with fixtures also on the Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, and have multiple captains in a given round of matches.

Playing the Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for international or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps, as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and so be more adventurous with your armband choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we assess each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity and so having Sergio Aguero as my one skipper for the week could outperform using transfers to have Sadio Mane twice, for example – again, it’s a judgement call and can go either way. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and not end up stuck with an unwanted armband choice and forced into a transfer. As always, though, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our captain plan

In truth, this season is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to captain strategy – with the way that fixtures have fallen, we’re rarely afforded a strong Saturday/Sunday rotation. Here we bring you the most cautious approach we could find that still uses premium options from the top teams; this is without using any transfers, so misses out on quite a few opportunities for additional captains. Nonetheless, we think it’s a good blue print to use as a starting point, allowing you to add in extra captains at your discretion.

GameweekDate of fixture(s)Captain option (team)Notes

September 13
September 14
7 September 19Man City

8 September 26Liverpool/Man United

September 28

Following this means that as long as you have a player from Arsenal, Man United and Man City, you should have no issues navigating the first eight Gameweeks. As already mentioned, there are several blank fixtures, whereby using a transfer or targeting a player from a “lesser team” that has good Saturday to Sunday to Saturday rotation will result in more captains but with a possible loss in quality. This is probably the hardest part of the Sky game to get right – whether to take the plunge and spend transfers for extra captains or hide behind the sofa and hope playing safe works out. In the end it comes down to a judgement call and a little luck.

If you have followed our articles up until now and you add this plan to your repertoire you should be armed with all you need for a successful season.

Rolling with this draft atm and it is definitely the most balanced squad Ive had. I just wanna try find another 0.5 from somewhere to swap Pelle with Benteke. Any ideas??

    Myhill - Hennessy
    Azpi - Kosc - Huth - Francis - Prödl
    Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - Milner - Bentaleb
    Rooney - Pelle - Sakho

Walcott--->Ramsey for that 0.5? I just think he's the safest option atm with uncertainty around Walcott/Giroud, and a supposedly uninspiring performance.

Either is good. I think they've both been priced right, and are both great options. Ozil for a bit more consistency.

Drop Bentaleb? Walcott looks the goods. Ended last season strong and had a good pre season. Didn't fire against Chelsea but Wenger said he was starved of chances.

You're right, I though he was 5.5 my mistake. Will be play every week? Ozil is a must if choosing between him and Walcott. I have both but if I were to choose 1 it would be Ozil. Plays most games, expected to get points and 0.5 cheaper

This is going against the grain, but I would shift Azpilicueta to Skrtel or Fonte.

Nice team. Walcott to Ozil for the .5 or if your like me and not too convinced about Milner downgrade him. You'd be getting Benteke anyway don't think you need to double on Liverpool attack. Milner to Ritchie. Milner to Sinclair and Sakho to Benteke keep Pelle.

Don't get me wrong here TE, Pelle is great as a entree with a bit of Bailey's to wash him down (perhaps a bit of Parmesan cheese for good measure). But Benteke is just a festive meal, he lasts for weeks, and the leftovers always taste better.

Not good news for Theo owners

When asked if Theo will keep that role during the new campaign,

Wenger : "It depends on the games. I tried to see the options I have through the season.

"I felt today that I wanted to use Theo's pace to go in behind. In the first half he worked very hard, didn't get too much service, but he worked very hard. In the second half when Giroud came on, I think he gave us a physical presence that was needed at that time as well."

He'll get plenty of wing opportunities for sure. I don't think Walcott can seriously challenge Giroud for his striker role but he'll get the odd game up front. Whats most interesting is how far the Ox has come, he deserves opportunities on the RW.

I think you're reading too much into it. My opinion is Wenger had to play both to give them a run. They both played their part and I think they will share the duty this season however if Walcott isn't Striker I think he will line up on the wing. He may miss the odd game where as Caz looks nailed on.

As I expected. Horse for courses as him and Giroux are so different. If he's playing well then he'll start on the wing when giroud starts anyway

not concerned about that - he was never going to be first choice striker.

he was odds on to start the season on RW anyway....but Ox's pre season puts that up in the air now.

Ox's pre season has been good. He scored the other night but that doesn't put him infront of Walcott. Arsenal fought to keep Walcott they wont play Ox a 21 year old kid infront of him. Ox will get game time and deservedly so. He's a jet and will become a great player. Walcott to start on the wing as he has done in pre season and still scored.

    Bottomed

For the first 2 GWs as a money/place holder for Aguero surely 2 Arsenal mids are better than 1 Arse and Sterling. I'm planning on Ramsey and Caz. I think both have a higher chance of scoring and I can keep the one I like which is already such a hard choice. If both areon fire and Hazard blanks I may keep them and downgrade Hazard to Sterling to raise cash for Aguero

Prefer both Ramsey and Ozil to Cazorla. Rest looks great 🙂

I keep flipping between Ozil and Cazorla! Figured Cazorla's a safer pick which offsets the Walcott flair abit.

Or I could ditch Walcott and get Ozil + Caz.

How often will you play Sinclair after gw1? Is it not worth going 4.5 and using the .5 elsewhere..?

Yup considering that as well. Would mean Azpi over Kolarov. I could downgrade Azpi to a 5.0 but not very sure where I would use the extra mil!

Ok fellas. While it's DZ time now.

    Myhill Henessey
    Azpi Cedric Francis-Holebas Targett
    Hazard Theo Sterling Mane Bentaleb
    Rooney Tekkers Sakho

Defense is a bit light, would prefer Merte instead of Holebas but can't find the extra 1m.
Don't really like Hazard tbh, but want him for GW 1 captaincy as Theo is now in doubt of starting
If Tekkers is unfit, then easy switch to Pelle for 1 GW with 0.5m ITB for upgrade.

      Hey Kof.

I would pick Kosc over Azpi tbh. Likewise, between Pelle/Benteke for me. But if you go with Pelle, would you keep Mane?

I actually like it... why no love for Haz? I'm worried about all of Arsenal options to be honest.

I like Haz but he's so expensive and budget is too tight at this stage.

Pelle is a good pick but I prefer Benteke as this stage. Mane seems OOP too

Back line is too expensive. Get rid of Navas, not normally a scorer and I can't see him getting a heap of game time with Sterling now in the team. Downgrade Fonte or Clyne and upgrade Navas.

It's pretty simple. Pick a captain for Saturday, you get a free captain change for Sunday, can spend a transfer for a Monday captain if you want, whoever is your last captain should have a game on the next Saturday and so on.

Your last captain for the GW should be a Saturday captain coming up or else you need to use a captain change or go without a Saturday captain. If there is a Monday game, you can transfer in your new captain (3rd capt for the GW).

          1. Loser@FPL
            • 8 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

ok i think u got it

            just to make things clear..
i hav a captain on saturday who plays and gives me points
then i can swap the captaincy with a player who plays on Sunday who has a Saturday match in the next GW or else i hav to do with a captainless Saturday

If there is a Monday match then i can transfer-in another player so as to have a 3rd player who can give me points as captain for that GW.

Have taken your advice on board and brought in Punchy for the first week AOA punt. Also listened to advice to go Benteke and Pelle for Rooney and Wilson. Currently looking like this for GW1 (wildcard button being pushed after the final game this weekend):

    Hazard Cazorla Sterling Puncheon Fabregas

    Benteke Pelle Lukaku

Has anyone done a comparison on Walcott's output with and without Giroud on the pitch?

Personally I think Walcott will do well in both cases since Giroud generally brings more attackers into the game, but some stats to back it up would be great if anyone has them

Very possible, especially until Sanchez is back and match fit.

Good question. Hard to say as Walcott hasn't played much when Giroud is around due to injury. Walcott's output is normally very high. Considering both Giroud and Walcott? If so I advise not too as Giroud may not start on if Walcott plays up front.
