Captain Sensible – Gameweek 3

Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero claims the lion’s share (35%) of the vote this Gameweek, having announced his return to Manchester City’s starting line-up with a goal against Chelsea. The Argentinian marksman already looks to be firing off all cylinders, as evidenced by the fact he sits atop the summit for goal attempts (nine) among forwards this term. Such is the strength of Aguero’s fixture-proof status, his owners are not deterred by the Sky Blues’ trip to the in-form Everton this Sunday. Given Manuel Pellegrini’s troops fashioned 18 shots on goal against last season’s stingiest rearguard, the Toffees will do well to batten down the hatches at Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney drops down a spot the second place, with 16% of voters keeping faith in Manchester United’s premier striker in spite of back-to-back blanks. Although Rooney tallied a paltry two goal attempts across his first couple of starts, the Red Devils’ home tie against Newcastle could well serve as the catalyst that kick-starts his campaign. For that reason, it no surprise his team-mate Memphis Depay occupies the bronze medal berth with 7% of the vote. The Netherlands international bagged an eye-catching brace during United’s Champions League qualifying win over Club Brugge and looks far more suited to the left wing role after moving out of the central position last time out. Furthermore, the absence through suspension of the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, Daryl Janmmat, should further stand to benefit the Dutchman if he’s retained out wide.

Bafetimbi Gomis is backed by over 6%, while Swansea’s high-flying new boy Andre Ayew has convinced just over 2% of voters to hand him the armband. The Welsh outfit have been in sensational from an offensive standpoint over the first two Gameweeks, chalking up more big chances (seven) than any other side. Moreover, they sit joint-top – alongside Man City – for shots on target (15), demonstrating their quality in the final third. A trip to Sunderland looks certain to harvest further attacking returns, given that the Black Cats shipped three goals in their previous home encounter against Norwich City.

Inspecting the lower reaches of the list, Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet scooped 4% of the vote each. The former has yet to deliver any attacking returns but a road tie against West Bromwich Albion – who’ve been breached three times in their first home fixture – could serve as a fertile proving ground for the dormant big-hitter. The latter, meanwhile, will fancy his chances of racking up points for the third successive Gameweek as the Hammers gear up for a home tie against winless Bournemouth.

At 3%, Alexis Sanchez – who plays at home to Liverpool this Gameweek – is starting to build some momentum as a slew of Fantasy managers draft him in with their Wildcard. Riyad Mahrez is not far behind the Chilean livewire, with his proponents expecting the goal spree to continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Speaking of the North London club, it’s perhaps surprising that Harry Kane attracted just 1.4% of the vote, considering he tallied four goals (including a hat-trick) against the Foxes last season.

Did I miss something, why are people dumping out Cedric? wasn't yesterday just a rest?

I think the most worrying thing is that a) Koeman showed that Caulker can play in Cedric's position and b) Saints defence (including def mid) has been so decimated from last season that it can no longer guarantee clean sheets.....

It is kneejerk doing it before watford and Norwich, coming from someone who doesnt own a southampton defender.

Current WC team looks like this:

      McCarthy | Butland

      Kolarov | Shaw | Gomez | Richards | Morgan

      Silva | Sanchez | Payet | Mahrez | Ritchie

      Aguero | Benteke | Deeney

Rotating between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 and benching one of Payet, Deeney, Mahrez and Ritchie each week means the benched player's fixtures are as follows until GW20:

whm, mci, nor, mci, ARS, nor, mci, CHE, sot, lei, MUN, MUN, che, CHE, LIV, che, MCI, MCI

Realistically my team will look completely different by then but interesting all the same!

That's almost exactly what I'm doing! Swap Ritchie and Benteke for Ayew and Pelle, and I'm rotating the same front 8.

        Obviously I think it's a brilliant plan.

our defence is a mess, pva and jones are constantly out of position so i would expect swansea of all teams to capitalise on this given their pace in wide areas. o'shea coming in may help to organise us a bit better but i would have williams in over coates searching for the clean sheet alone

      Ayev - Chadli - Mahrez - Silva - Payet

It's very good. Given that you have enough faith in the Chelsea defence to have Courtois, I doubt you'll want to drop him, so I think Butland could be downgraded to save 0.5m.

With a 4.5 defender to take the 5th spot you'd have 1 mill to upgrade Surman to someone more offensive.

      Kolorov - Darmian - Muniesta - Gomez - Richards

FYI I believe McCarthey will keep his place.

Depay's performance wasn't due to him being amazing (don't get me wrong, he's good) but due to the line-up and formation of Brugge. Don't expect him to have as easier a game in the PL

Or it was because he was played in the right position. If he lines up on the left wing against Toon I reckon he'll be devastating, which is why I'm captaining him over Aguero.

So I think I'm finally settled, would be great to get some advice on this.

      Myland
      Kolarov Huth Francis Cathcart Targett
      Silva Sanchez Payet Ayew Mahrez
      Kun Pelle Deeney

      0itb

Plan to downgrade Pelle and/or my least favourite mid after the next two games, and get in a WBA def and make other upgrades.

      Thoughts?

      Thoughts on this WC team?

      McCarthy
      Jenkinson, Williams, Shaw
      Willian, Mata, Sanchez, Chadli
      Aguero, Diouf, Gomis

      Subs: Hart, Sagna, Richards, Obertan

Struggling to see how I can top this: Willian looks best-valued Chelsea player, even a bit of a bargain. Not sure whether Mata/Aguero or Silva/Rooney. Not sure about Chadli either. Rest am quite happy with. Thoughts?

The only one I'm not sure about is Gomis, and that's purely because he might end up squatting on a precious striker position if e.g. Giroud/Benteke/Rooney/Costa/Pelle/New Spurs striker etc etc hit streaks.

I think so. The Swansea defence is one the best, and Williams gets a ton of bonus points. Swansea's passing game works wonders for him.

I feel all 3 is too much. I'm going with Williams/Gomis but that's because I have Payet. I can't have all 4 because I feel either one of Ayew/Payet may not last like people assume.

Henderson a big loss I think, and they were tight-ish when they pitched up last year and got dismantled.

      WC
      Ruddy / Butland

      Kolarov / Cedric / Darmian / Oxford / Mings

      Alexis / Payet / Yaya / Depay / Mahrez

      Aguero / Gomis / Kone

      0 ITB

Is my defence too risky with Mings yet to play?
      Will be going 3-5-2

Huth. But check Stoke's fixtures. Muniesa is 4.5

Ward. Prioritise this gameweek first and foremost.

Also rotates a bit better with Richards should Gomez lose his spot, or Kolarov get benched.

      How's this looking:

      Myhill - McCarthy

      Shaw - Sagna - Williams - Richards - Targett

      Sanchez - Silva - Payet - Mane - Mahrez

      Aguero - Gomis - Wilson

      Cheers.

Just spotted the Zabaletta news - so how many games is Sagna safe for?

Out at least a month, which is enough time for Man U's fixtures to get tougher and me to swap out Shaw for a more nailed-on Man City defender, and swap Sagna for a solid 4.5

      Kasper (McCarthy)

      Darmian, Mert, Kompany (Gomez, Targett)

      Silva, Ozil, Ayew, Mahrez (Westwood)

      Aguero, Pele, Benteke

Interesting. Do wonder if you will regret not owning either Hazard or Sanchez.

I think I may but my thinking is that it will only take 2FT to fit one of them in. Found it was easier to create a better balanced team without them. I had hazard in at the start and I wanted to switch to Sanchez now but just can't find a team I'd be happy with with them in atm.

I think both of them will have a great season but unsure when they will get going properly so hoping to just keep re-evaluating and adjust if necessary.
