Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 3

Our regular Monday look around the treatment rooms arrives this afternoon as we scour the top-flight for confirmation of any new injuries sustained over the weekend. Southampton have worries over their Senegalese attacker, Everton’s issues at left-back increase, whilst Spurs are sweating over the availability of their Danish playmaker.

Crystal Palace
Following the death of his father, Yannick Bolasie was afforded compassionate leave for the Eagles’ victory over Aston Villa. Commenting on the tragic news, Alan Pardew will allow the DR Congo international time to grieve:

“Ironically he (Sako) wasn’t going to start. Yala was in a great place and then, bless his heart, he has this terrible news about his father. That win was for him and his family and I hope it gives them a lift. I’m not putting him under any pressure to come back. It’s about him and his family and when he feels comfortable. I couldn’t care less if it takes three weeks.”

Pardew – who is without Patrick Bamford’s services against parent club Chelsea this weekend – reckons Connor Wickham is also likely to miss out at the Bridge:

“He got kneed in the ribs against on Arsenal. He tried to train on Wednesday but couldn’t take the pain so we think he will probably miss Chelsea as well and then he will be okay.”

Everton
Brendan Galloway was substituted in the dying embers of the first half against Manchester City after picking up a knee injury. Roberto Martinez later revealed that the 19-year-old suffered a knock to his patella tendon, with an assessment forthcoming over the next few days. In better news, the Spanish boss confirmed that Bryan Oviedo should be able to cover for Galloway as he approaches a return to first-team action:

“Brendan has been terrific and we as a football club are ready to give young players an opportunity. He picked up a patella tendon problem that we’ll assess in the next 24 to 48 hours. It’s probably more to do with his age and the fact he’s still growing rather than a structural injury. Bryan Oviedo is fully fit and needs a bit of match fitness now. Hopefully we’ll see him on the pitch very soon.”

Manchester City
Nicolas Otamendi was not part of the Sky Blues’ squad for their 2-0 win over Everton due to his lack of a work permit. The Home Office are expected to clear the former Valencia defender by the middle of next week, freeing him up for a home tie against Watford.

Southampton
Sadio Mane had to be replaced by Shane Long after just 25 minutes of the Saints’ home encounter against Watford. Ronald Koeman was keen to play down the severity of the injury, expressing hope that the fleet-footed winger will be passed fit for their midweek Europea League tie:

“He had a kick on his hip. It looks not so bad, but we’ll have to wait. He was not good enough to continue. I hope that we will have everybody available for Thursday, Sadio as well.”

Sunderland
Earlier this afternoon, Dick Advocaat confirmed that Billy Jones won’t be available for tomorrow evening’s cup clash against Exeter due to injury.

Tottenham
Christian Eriksen sat out Spurs’ 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium due to a knee injury, as confirmed by the club’s official website.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino said that new arrival Clinton Njie could make his debut in the Gameweek 4 clash against Everton, having secured his work permit and negotiated a week of training:

“He was in France for his work permit and maybe next week he will be available. First, he needs to train more with the group.”

West Bromwich Albion
Saido Berahino was absent from the Baggies’ matchday squad for their 3-2 home defeat against Chelsea, fuelling speculation that he’s poised for a much-mooted transfer to Tottenham. Pressed on the situation, Tony Pulis rejected the opportunity to explain Berahino’s no-show:

“It’s absolutely ridiculous we are talking about something outside of football. I have said what I have said about the transfer window; if you close it before the season starts then everybody can concentrate on the football. There are a lot of clubs being affected by it being open and we are playing Chelsea today – the champions – and we are not talking football, which is down to the system.”

Suspensions

John Terry received a second yellow card for pulling at West Brom striker Salomon Rondon as he raced clear of the Blues’ rearguard, meaning the Chelsea captain will miss a home clash against Palace next Gameweek. Offering his verdict after the match, Jose Mourinho declined to bemoan the decision and instead highlighted the work they’ve done in training to cope with a one-man disadvantage:

“I prefer to focus on us. To speak about the sending off I have to speak about many other things in the game – some you can see, others we can see, so many things. I have to do what is in my hands which is to train. We have to train 10 against 11. We have done it a couple of times already in Canada. We have to do it more because we have to know what to do with 10 men when you are winning, or losing, or chasing a result. The difference between today and Swansea was exactly that. Against Swansea we had 10 and we wanted to change the result, and today we had 10 and we wanted to keep the result. We must have clear ideas about it so it’s something we have to do in training, and that is the only thing in our hands.”

Carl Jenkinson was sent off for fouling Bournemouth midfielder Max Gradel as he burst into the penalty box. The Arsenal loanee now sits out the Hammers’ trip to Anfield next weekend, with James Tomkins expected to cover at the right-back berth.

No - just suggesting that with utd's seemingly strong defence a penalty might be the most likely source of a goal. On the other hand utd's defence haven't been really tested this season - Swansea look a lot better going forward than Spurs/NewC...

    Either play ayew (Swansea)

    Or

    Wilson

Maybe... But they'd have to put him in the Costa bracket, and that's a LOT of money to pay for someone who's never played in the Premier League

Yeah he'd be 10.5+ for sure. But with that Arsenal midfield around him and him being the main goalscorer for the team he'd tear it up imo.

Probably not a great deal. I would expect Arsenal to score more and Benzema to get a greater share than maybe Giroud would, so Sanchez would get a slightly smaller share of a slightly larger pie.

    Schmeichel
    Azpil Bellerin Targett
    Hazard Yaya Mane Mahrez

Absolute minimum: 2 for GK, 3 per field player x 3 = 11 minimum. The more your expected value goes above 11, the more mental pressure there is to press the trigger.

I'd save it for a dgwk. That way you can tap into the good single gwkers you have to bench or max out on dgwkers - within reason that is. I think to do it outside a dgwk would be a bit of a waste.

I really don't see how you can realistically load up on DGW players.

There's likely only going to be 2 or 3 DGW games, so 6 teams, and they're all playing against each other, which reduces the value of butchering your team to have competing attackers and defenders.

So I don't necessarily think there'll be any more value specifically on your bench than there would be on a carefully selected GW when your bench players (cos most of us know who at least 2, maybe 3, of them are for certain) have nice fixtures.

If four Prem League sides are in the semi finals of the Fa Cup then there will be four rescheduled games. There's a great community article out tomorrow am showing that gwk 37 is the only gameweek where they can be rescheduled - that could mean up to 8 teams involved in a double.

So potentially with a wildcard the week before there is plenty of chance to load up on dgwers plus keep some good single week players - who thanks to the bench boost will have their points go into your score.

not sure how talking about possible transfer of a player is classed as things outside of football as TP quoted.

    Kolarov (WAT)
    Darmian (Swa)
    Williams (MUN)
    Richards (SUN)
    Ward (Che)

    Courtois-Hennesey
    Cedric-Merte-Gomez-Oxford-Huth
    Özil-Sterling-Mahrez-Cabaye-Fabregas
    Aguero-Pelle-Gomis

Im wondering to take double hit -8 for:

    Huth -> Kolarov
Fabregas -> Ritchie/Gradel(good fixtures and saving money for upgrade of ozil/sterling)

    What do you think?

am considering the same myself. Already took a it for ritchie and aguero but considering the extra -4 for kolarov....probably won't go for it since my defense (azpi, kosc, cedric, richards, muniesa) have decent fixtures this week, feel like a waste!

In your case I like it since you only have one big hitting D, won't be overloading your defense.

I think the Huth to Kola move is a yes, but the Fabregas move can wait since they have CP at home, points inc.

Hi all. Long time listener, first time caller. Could do with some advice on who to bench this game week.

Kolororv (WAT), Targett (NOR), Azpilicueta (CRY), Francis (LEI), Koscielny (new)

My midfield is Ritchie, Yaya, Hazard and Mane (injury permiting). So will be playing 3-4-3

Kolorov is obviously a starter and most likely Azpilicueta aswell. Any help appreciated

    Just read this on Pedro.

"The impressiveness in Pedro's performance lay not in that he was spectacular, but that his transition from Barcelona to Chelsea, Spain to England and sunshine to teeming rain was so seamless. I watched the game on a smallish screen in a pub, and at times it was difficult to tell the difference between Pedro and Eden Hazard as he picked the ball up from deep and ran past defenders; that is the most emphatic of compliments. Close control, pass-and-move and creativity in tight situations are the nutrients on which his Barcelona diet was founded.

The obvious retort to any praise for Pedro is the "knee-jerk" argument, the newly-born younger sibling of the "lazy journalism" accusation fired in my (and many others like me) direction. Yet it would be far more foolish not to praise the Spaniard. The established norm is for foreign recruits to watch from the sidelines for the first fortnight, taking in the footballing culture and building up an understanding with team-mates in training. Pedro has bypassed that stage, and yet still performed at least as well as any other Chelsea player.

'But Angel Di Maria started brightly and faded', I hear you say. Indeed so, but - and unlike Di Maria - Pedro 1) has arrived at his first-choice club, and 2) is not solely responsible as the outlet for pace and creativity in tandem. Watching him dovetail with Hazard could become a deeply pleasing pastime this season.

His manager was in accordance with that opinion. "He wasn't quite Maradona but he was close," Jose Mourinho told Chelsea TV. "He's a very good player. There is always a question mark because of how many top players come to England and don't perform immediately. We have examples in our club." Juan Cuadrado, absent at the Hawthorns, should shower in lukewarm water to treat such an obvious burn.

Finally, Pedro also offered something in addition to Hazard. Last season, the Belgian attempted just 57 crosses from open play in the league across his 3,372 minutes, effectively one for every hour spent on the pitch. Hazard instead prefers to dribble and pass than cross, even with the physical presence of Diego Costa in the box.

In contrast, Pedro attempted six crosses to Hazard's one during his 84 minutes, more than Hazard in any league game last season. It should come as no surprise that Costa therefore had four shots against West Brom, double his total in the two other league games combined. Chelsea's attack, flat against Swansea and Manchester City, suddenly has a third dimension.

In short conclusion (he says after 500 words), Pedro at Chelsea just makes an awful lot of sense. Will he be the Player of the Year? Who knows. Will he be vital in Chelsea's season? Almost certainly. Would he have improved Manchester United in the final third? Hell yes."

Great post. Hmmm. Pedro is certainly making a claim for a spot in our teams. A full 2 million cheaper than Hazard. Likely to make Costa a better option as well...

My stats may not be 100% accurate. But they show 5 of Pedro's crosses went nowhere.

I agree on other aspects, in particular getting the first team he wanted, however I think an issue is he had to leave Barcelona if he wanted to play football.

I've been set on Silva for a while...but maybe he gets sacrificed? (keep those tables away from me Doos...as Silva's 19 touches in the box makes me want to keep him!)
