Scout Report – Nicolas Otamendi

Last week, Manchester City swooped to sign the Argentina international Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia in a deal worth a reported £32 million. The centre-back has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad, and is the Citizens third major summer signing following the addition of England duo Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph.

Speaking about his latest signing, manager Manuel Pellegrini was clearly delighted to have secured the Argentine’s services:

“Nicolas Otamendi was arguably the best defender in La Liga last season and so naturally I’m delighted to have added a player of his quality…“As a footballer, Nicolas has all of the qualities to be a success in the Premier League – he’s strong, he’s excellent in the tackle and he’s very good technically.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Buenos Aires, Otamendi began his youth career at Velez Sarsfield, before making his first-team debut for the Argentinian outfit in 2008. He was named in the South American Team of the Year in 2009, and his performances attracted the attention of Portuguese side Porto, who signed the defender for €4 million in the summer of 2010.

Otamendi enjoyed a successful first season in Portugal, helping Porto win the Premeira Liga, while he also managed to score five times in his 15 league outings. He would go on to win two more league titles, as he chalked up a further 62 appearances for the Portuguese giants, although he only scored a two more goals.

The Argentine was sold to Valencia for €12 million in February 2014, but was loaned to Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro for the rest of the 2013/14 campaign, where he made five league appearances, before returning to the Spanish side for the following season, where he played 35 times in La Liga, scoring six goals.

The 27-year-old defender made his international debut against Panama in April 2009, and has since gone on to make 25 appearances for his country, scoring one goal. He was named in the Team of the Tournament in this summer’s Copa America, where he played in all but one of Argentina’s six matches as they lost out to Chile in the final on penalties.

THE PROSPECTS

Given Otamendi’s standing as one of the best centre-backs in Europe last season, the Argentine is ultimately expected to partner skipper Vincent Kompany at the heart of the City defence. The early season form of Eliaquim Mangala, a former team-mate of Otamendi at Porto does, however, throw a little doubt on that assumption.

Indeed, as Pellegrini admitted prior to the weekend win at Everton – a match Otamendi was unavailable for due to work permit issues – he’s happy with his defence at the moment:

“In the way we are playing, it is impossible to move Kompany and Mangala and all the rest of the players from their positions. They are in a good moment. We did not concede one goal in the last two games. We continue playing with the same. We played very well in these two games. Vincent played very well, Mangala played very well, all the team played very well and it is very important to continue in that way.”

City have yet to concede in their three league outings so far this term, and seem to be benefitting from some continuity in their back four, with Bacary Sagna, Kompany, Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov all working well in unison. Mangala’s struggles of last season illustrated how it can be difficult for defenders to settle in England’s top-flight and while Otamendi is a much more experienced player, he may still take a little time to become accustomed to the pace of the Premier League.

In terms of comparing the two players, Otamendi fared better in tackles (2.9 to 1.7), clearances (7.3 to 5.9), interceptions (3.1 to 1.6) and blocks (0.8 to 0.5) per league match last season than Mangala –indeed, he made more clearances (258) than any player in La Liga in 2014/15. There is evidence that the France international is starting to read the game better, though – his interceptions per match have risen to 3.7 so far this season.

Perhaps the main obstacle for Otamendi’s Fantasy prospects is the somewhat prohibitive 6.5 price tag he’s been handed in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). While he scored six goals and averaged 0.6 shots per match last year, compared to 0.2 for Kompany (although the Belgian is managing 1.2 goal attempts per match this term), the fact the City skipper ‘s security of makes his price tag of 6.3 in FPL looks far more appealing. There’s also the cheaper Kolarov (5.7) to consider from the City backline, given he appears to have formed a strong understanding with Sterling down the left-hand side. Nonetheless, the Serbian could yet be prone to rotation once the Champions League resumes next month, with Gael Clichy now fit for selection.

There’s no doubt Otamendi arrives in England with the potential to become one of the best centre-backs in the top flight. Despite only standing six foot tall, his aerial prowess makes him a real threat from set-pieces and could well see him bring in the points at both ends of the pitch. He’s also versatile enough to play at right-back, should Pellegrini look for alternatives in light of Pablo Zabaleta’s knee injury absence.

With City set for a superb run of fixtures (WAT, cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU) in the next six Gameweeks, many are looking to load up on their main assets but for now, Otamendi looks an unnecessary gamble. There seems little doubt that he will ultimately usurp Mangala in the heart of defence but, bearing in mind his side’s stunning start to the season, it seems unlikely that the City boss will feel the need to tinker with a winning formula for now.

I'm not aware of anyone posting this article from fivethirtyeight.com yet, but It's required reading for Kane owners.

Based on a statistical analysis, a TL;DR would be:"Kane would have to be a once-in-a-generation talent (like Lionel Messi, who has three of the top 10 overachiever seasons of the past four years) to not regress."

How much he's going to regress is anyone's guess ofcourse.

I think The Sopranos is the same as Breaking Bad in this sense. You, or at least most people, empathise with Tony despite him clearly being a thoroughly dislikeable man.

*SPOILER ALERT, BUT IT'S BEEN A DECADE*

In The Sopranos, Christopher's death is the moment I stopped rooting for Tony, so very very late on. That really emphasises what a repulsive man he is.

that was the beauty of sopranos though, they build up Tony to be this mans man then just as you think wouldnt mind going pub with him he'll do something pshycotic

He said he wanted to create a Mr. Chips to Scarface show. Where everyone is on board with the everyday mans hero and gradually comes to despise him.
You never got on board, so missed his intended journey. I guess..

Thats what makes Breaking Bad unique, the change in Walt, great a character as Tony Soprano is there is nothing he does in that show that he wouldnt do in the first episode if it was necessary.
Still dont see why i need to root for him though

In real life maybe, but it's a TV show, and you generally can't help but root in some way for the central character. Also, at the start he seems to be just trying to provide for his family and medical bills, then of course it becomes clear that that isn't the case.

Alright, too many repeated questions now.

    A) Don't be afraid of benching Darmian, I reckon we will concede and Montero will be a nightmare for the Italian RB so bench him.

    B) Save FT if there's nothing you need to do. 2 FT's for the international break is a nice plus.

    C) Diouf vs Wilson - Diouf is the better long term pick IMO but I went Wilson to free up some funds so if you can afford Diouf, get Diouf.

    D) Yaya vs Silva - Silva will get more points by the end of this season. Mark my words

Juni 2018. (ksta)

In other words nice profit for Leverkusen and not bad with goal scoring and assists.

Just joined FFS having up until now generally just scroll around FFS articles, forum, injury updates, etc to arm myself with the best knowledge for the upcoming GW. However I couldn’t help noticing the gw4 capt poll crazy variance so far between Aguero (61%) & Hazard (3%) and to be honest I can’t help siding with my gut which is telling me there’s a monster Hazard score around the corner despite my logic saying that Aguero is the sensible pick – but is he really and is my logic a bit distorted and predominantly influenced by the usual “herd” mentality as it was many times last year to my detriment. I mean it’s Hazard we’re talking about here (PFA POTY), it’s not like I’m taking the armband of Aguero for someone like Mahrez (4%), despite his excellent form, but a leftfield armband switch nonetheless. No I’m talking about a player who as far as PPG goes, is up there with Aguero year on year, so is it really such a risk.

And here my friends is the ultimate reason I’m going with Hazard over Aguero this week:
    1. If Hazard scores (goal/assist) he’s a higher probability of scoring bonus points than Aguero.
    2. City defs look like hogging more of the baps than Chelsea defs, should both teams keep a clean sheet therefore again lowering probability for Aguero baps e.g. gw2 match against chelsea.
    3. Hazard can get the extra 2 points over Aguero for clean sheet.
    4. Watford so far have done pretty ok defensively and will obviously park the bus and ok Pardew may very well do the same with Palace but I do see the Chelsea game a little more open.
    5. Albeit highly unlikely, there is a small chance Pellegrini may give Aguero a rest giving his late return from the summer whereas no chance that will happen Hazard. Bony start maybe?
    6. Pedro’s arrival will stretch the width of opposition defence giving he’s more disciplined out on the right meaning Hazard won’t be as easily marked.
    7. Glorious chance to shoot up the rankings as long as you still have Aguero in your team as there will be many that go Aguero capt but don’t have Hazard in team.

Yes ok Aguero is more than capable of going out and banging in a hattrick or even 4 as he did last year but all in all I promised myself this year I would listen a bit more to my gut instead of just going with the obvious herd choice and to be fair most weeks I will go with Aguero as I did last week against Everton but this week it’s Hazard for me!

Yes I must do. Are they're stats all that different I mean there 2 world class players who on their day are unplayable. I mean are their stats all that different to warrant such a high variance in the armband choice (granted it's just a poll)?

Can't imagine Aguero blanking at home to Watford. Chelsea much more likely to struggle with Palace

      Welcome.

I too am captaining a Chelsea player over Aguero this week. I think the Palace game will be much more open than the Watford one. I will be going for Costa. Good luck 🙂

Ye he looked good the weekend and pedro style seems to compliment his. U never can be sure with Costa though I always feel on edge watching him waiting for cards - someday it will be red!

      Valid points.

Just based on the eye test alone, I think Aguero definitely has the makings of scoring a big haul this weekend. I think the moment a striker gets 2 goals, he will undoubtedly be hogging the baps just because of how important goals are for a striker's BPS.

There are just too many variables with regards to Hazard at the moment - unconvincing team performance, not very clinical, Costa's style of play is costing them a lot of fluidity due to his constant fouls/diving.

On the flip side, Aguero is playing for a City team that is purring at the moment defensively and offensively. They have been much more clinical than Chelsea (double the number of SoT vs Chelsea, and 50% more accurate...just a teaser for the wealth of info in the members area - hopefully i don't get flagged). On current form, it is hard to move away from Aguero.

Watford have done OK defensively - but they were up against toothless WBA at home, and a struggling Southampton who played 3-5-2. Their first away game of the season, they conceded 2 and probably should have conceded more.

Hazard is a good pick, Aguero is a better pick imo. Might not always translate to points, but that's all we have to work with unfortunately.

Aguero blanked 35% of the time last season when playing 60 minutes or more, Hazard blanked 42% of the time.

Hazard's highest score last season was 14 points, which he managed once (1 goal, 1 assist, CS, 3 bonus), followed by 13 points, also on one occasion (1 goal, 1 assist, 3 bonus), and then a series of 11s and 10s (1 goal, 3 bonus, with or without CS).

Aguero's highest score last season was 23 (3 goals, 2 assists, 3 bonus), followed by 19 (4 goals, missed penalty, 3 bonus), then 16 and 13.

Aguero has a lower floor, and a higher ceiling - he's both the safer and the more explosive pick, imo.
