The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 5 – The Forwards

Our final look at this week’s updated Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six rounds of fixtures, sees us delve into the movements among the forwards. West Brom’s Salomon Rondon makes his first appearance on the Watchlist after netting his first goal for the Baggies against Stoke, but Christian Benteke drops a few places after a disappointing blank at home to West Ham.

While Sergio Aguero failed to register any attacking points for the second successive match last time out, City’s very favourable run of fixtures (cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun) means the Argentine just about clings on to top spot ahead of the in-form Callum Wilson and Bafetimbi Gomis. The 13.2-priced forward has managed 12 shots from inside the box so far this season, the third highest among forwards, and will surely reward his 32% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with some goals over the next few weeks.

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is the budget forward option of choice at this point, having scored four goals in his last two matches, while the Cherries next four fixtures (nor, SUN, sto, WAT) should give the 5.7-valued striker further opportunities to add to his tally. The England U21 international did score from his only goal attempt against Leicester, though, and has registered more shots from inside the box (four) in his two away appearances, than he has against weaker opposition at home (three), indicating he may be more of a threat on the road when Eddie Howe’s side have more space to play, and can also hit the opposition on the counter-attack.

The incredible goalscoring form of Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis continued in Gameweek 4, with the France international netting for the fourth time this season in the 2-1 win against Man United. The former Lyon striker is the third most transferred player in this week, with over 162,000 new owners, which has seen his price rise to 7.4 in FPL. The Frenchman also has a pretty kind run of fixtures (wat, EVE, sot, TOT, STO, avl) in which to continue his red-hot form.

Although Stoke striker Mame Biram Diouf (6.6) failed to add to his two goal-haul against West Brom last weekend, he remains towards the top of our ladder by virtue of the Potters favourable upcoming schedule (LEI, BOU, avl, swa, WAT) after the Gameweek 5 trip to Arsenal. The Senegal international has totalled a respectable eight shots from inside the box this term, and should provide some decent attacking returns over the next month or so.

One of the fallers in our latest update is Liverpool’s Christian Benteke, who only managed two goal attempts in the surprise 3-0 home defeat to West Ham last weekend. The Belgian international also picked up a minor thigh injury, but is expected to recover in time for the Gameweek 5 clash at Old Trafford. The Reds then face two plum home match-ups against Norwich and his former side Aston Villa, fixtures in which the 8.5-rated forward will surely have to deliver in, or face losing many of his 37.2% ownership ahead of three tougher encounters (eve, tot, SOT).

Diego Costa keeps his place around halfway up our ladder, although with Chelsea’s fixtures (eve, ARS, new, SOT, AVL, whm) still mixed over the coming period, his 11.1 price tag in FPL looks unlikely to attract any further investment. The Spain international has blanked in three of his four appearances so far, and like his Blues team-mate Eden Hazard (11.4), doesn’t look worth the extra outlay over his Spanish compatriot Pedro (9.5) if Fantasy managers are keen to have some Chelsea attacking coverage.

Another one of last season’s leading front men, Harry Kane, is also finding the going much tougher so far. The England striker has yet to register any attacking points, while only three of his 13 goal attempts have been on target. Tottenham have two more favourable fixtures (sun, CPL) in which the 9.4-priced forward can prove his worth, with the schedule thereafter (MCI, swa, LIV) looking much more difficult. Kane does lead all forwards for chances created so far this season, however, with eight.

After netting his first goal of the season against Liverpool, and with four favourable fixtures (NEW, mci, NOR, sun, cpl) over the next five Gameweeks, West Ham’s Diafra Sakho moves up a couple of places in our latest refresh. The 6.5-valued striker does now face some competition for his place from new signing Nikica Jelavic (6.0), but his pace and clever movement should ensure he is still the main man in attack for the Hammers as they look to find some consistency, with two outstanding wins on the road countered by a pair of disappointing home defeats.

The only new entry in our rankings this week is West Brom’s Salomon Rondon. The Venezuela international grabbed his first goal for the Baggies last time out, and has some great upcoming fixtures (SOT, avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor) in which to really announce himself on the Premier League stage. The only slight concern, given his 7.0 price tag, is that Tony Pulis’ side have only registered 24 shots from inside the box this season, the sixth lowest total in the top flight.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has managed to register attacking returns in three of his four appearances, and looks worthy of consideration priced at 6.1 in FPL. The England international has totalled eight goal attempts this term (six from inside the box), and has also created seven chances. With confidence high at the King Power Stadium after a great start to the campaign, Vardy should continue to offer good value for the upcoming period (AVL, sto, ARS, nor, sot, CPL).

On the back of a goal and assist in the 3-0 win against Norwich, Graziano Pelle is perhaps slightly unlucky to find himself towards the bottom of our ladder. With the upcoming fixtures (wba, MUN, SWA, che, LEI, liv) not looking favourable for Southampton, there do look to be several better options than the 8.0-rated Saints striker, although he has registered more shots from inside the box (17) than any other forward this season.

Troy Deeney has slumped all the way to the bottom our of rankings on the back of three consecutive blanks, with Watford’s next four fixtures (SWA, new, CPL, bou) meaning we’re just about keeping faith with their skipper. The 5.4-priced forward will have increased competition for his place at Vicarage Road from new signings Victor Ibarbo and Mamadou Oulare (both 5.5), but Deeney, who has registered an impressive 11 goal attempts this term, is expected to continue up front for the Hornets.

Well he's a handy player, leads the line, and their fixtures are good.

Personally I wouldn't fancy tying up one of my three strikers spots with a Pulis striker but if he performs well I'm open to the idea of jumping on the fixtures. I need more convincing and I highly doubt I'll go for it but never say never.

Couple of quick questions, im on WC:

    A) Is it too early to get Coleman? He has been looking like Everton's best player so far but his fixtures dont ease out until GW11

    B) Trying to justify not going with a Chelsea mid, most likely Pedro. But if i dont get him then ill have Sanchez and will struggle to put in Hazard

    Thanks

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

      A) yes, but get him in week 11

      B) Sanchez first, don't go with Chelsea at the moment

        • 9 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

He has a relatively low ownership so hopefully his price drops by then

Thank you, Sanchez hasnt looked all too great but after missing his hattrick against Burnley last season i know what he's capable.

Yeah I'm praying for price drops between now and then, I may be tempted by a Baines/Coleman double up by then.

Would the last day of the season be a good time to play the AOA chip?

Looking at clean sheets on the last day for the past 4 years:
    2014/15 - 7
    2013/14 - 4
    2012/13 - 4
    2011/12 - 4

Add that to some of the freak final day scores we've seen over the past few seasons, then there could be something in it.

    Thoughts?

What a strange but pleasing start to the season.Only City look the real deal atm, Chelsea very uninspiring! United have wasted a huge load of cash again, Liverpool won't progress under Rodgers and Wenger stubborn as per with signings. Hope Swans maintain their form, a real football club with real fans.

Silva is too good and consistent. I'd drop Sterling.

    2. Forza Juventus

No need for Kun and 2 city mids and Kolarov is who i want next week too, so i agree with the move completely.

If possible Kolarov Silva Kun is the best 3, and dropping Sterling would be more ideal. But i assume that money may be an issue. Although you never know how KDB will affect the points sharing, he will surely shake things up too.

I want Sanchez at some stage but his fixtures aren't too appealing as yet.. So i may hold off a bit. Very scared he will start firing soon, hoping he doesn't play amazingly regardless of fixtures and screw me over.

Blimey! I know people will say "Moyes inherited a title winning side, LVG got 4th place", but LVG is getting far too easy a ride in the press. If Moyes was serving up such turgid football after so long in the job, there'd basically be a mob turning up at his door with flaming sticks.

The problem with Dave was he just does not have the pulling power in the transfer market that LVG does

I bet Moyes is sorry he didn't do what LVG has done and get rid of all those players that got him fired

LVG has done a lot of the hard work by getting rid of the old i am sure United will start to improve from here on in

                I agree

As a United fan i feel terrible about the way Moyes was treated he is a 1st class person

Owners lost faith in him and were unsure he could attract top talent to the club awful shame

Fergie should have no say in his successor imo i would have banned him from Old Trafford for games his ghost is ls a bad smell around the place

Liverpool had similar problems with great managers not staying out of the way after there time at the club

From the big names: Di Maria has left for a £15m loss, and I am not sold on the Schweinsteiger deal at all. Other than that, they weren't exactly Galactico type signings. Van Gaal's best players have often been Mata, Herrera, and sometimes even Fellaini - all Moyes signings!

Yes, but you also had Henry, Pires, Bergkamp, Sol Campbell, Ljunberg, Vieira and Gilberto in that side 😉

Cech's a great signing, it's just not enough.

Aside from a defensive mid I'm relatively happy with them. Under a differents manager we might even challenge for the Top 4 with our current squad... But there is a worrying lack of match winners 🙂

You don't reckon Rodgers is a good enough manager? If you ignore the fact he's a egomaniac, that's a bit surprising.

I am fairly happy. I still have major concerns about Martinez as a manager, particularly defensively, but Deulofeu was a fantastic piece of business, and (as long as Martinez starts playing him!) I am tremendously excited about his prospects. We needed to keep Stones and McCarthy, which we did, and we needed to buy a centre back, which we did. Whether that centre back is any good is another matter, and what I have heard is not positive, but I can't judge that until I see him play.

I do wish we'd bought a goalkeeper, Howard is past it and Robles is garbage, but all in all I can't complain.

Howard single-handedly saved you 1pts at WHL though. Keepers last until they're 40 you know 😉

South American centre backs... not always the best choice. Disciplinary nightmare. Maybe I shouldn't generalise.

Aha the thing with Howard is, if you catch a good game of his, he looks a world beater (the reaction to his WC display against Belgium being a prime example). Then you watch him week in, week out, and realise how many points you would gain with a top keeper.

He's been a great servant for us, and I'm not saying he's a BAD keeper, just that his positioning can often be suspect, and his errors are increasing with age.

Nope, we needed backup to Coquelin.

Flamini's not good enough as back up and Arteta is back up to the position alongisde Coquelin behind about 4 other players IMO

Flamini not good enough is an understatement, he's a liability! Arteta is ok, I suppose we could call up Rene-Adelaide.....

Pelle and Targett --> Wilson and Monreal

Yes or no? Would be Kolarov but already have too much City.

How about Bellerin instead - better attacking?

Bellerin will prob get most attacking points, but Monreal probably the most Bonus points.

I think they will finish the season roughly the same, bar any injuries.

what to do with this. 2FT and 0.5m in bank

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Huth,Kompany,Darmian (Gomez,Richards)
    Mahrez Silva Sanchez Payet (Westwood)
    Gomis Aguero Diouf

who should i prioritise to get rid of

Nobody, Im guessing you wildcarded gw 3 hence having no flaws in your team. IMO save one for next week and just make a one week transfer like Diouf>Vardy or Callum Wilson then back to Diouf sounds crazy but you really have no need for those transfers.

Yeah i wildcarded in gameweek 3, sounds like a good idea, it will be Wilson as already have Leicester cover with mahrez.

Only concern was no Chelsea attacking coverage and sanchez being poor last few games.

Sanchez has better potential for points this week then any Chelsea attacker

Sanchez will only pick up. It's risky doing that move. As you risk losing your 2FTs the following week if you're forced into another change as well as making the one back to Diouf. Plus Diouf could bag anyway.

not a problem of losing transfers when he has no real use for them

Pretty much the same team as mine. I've 2FTs also and am sitting tight. Only gonna use one if an injury crops up.

same, almost identical apart from defense (I have Kolarov, Shaw and Johnson from those teams instead of your picks!).
