Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 6

United’s new goal hero and Watford’s fine opening displays arrive on our “Digest” radar, whilst Chelsea’s resurgence looks poised to resurrect our interest in Eden Hazard and the Blues backline.

The Player

A finely taken brace against Southampton on Sunday afternoon has catapulted Anthony Martial onto many Fantasy managers’ radars this week.

After netting as a sub in the Gameweek 5 win over Liverpool, Martial earned his first league start under Louis van Gaal and wasted no time in making an impact by firing the Red Devils to a hard-earned 3-2 victory at St Mary’s.

Ahead of a home clash against Sunderland, a staggering 330,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have drafted in the young Frenchman since the weekend, with his price rising from 8.0 to 8.2 in the last 48 hours. Produce the goods against the Black Cats and the bandwagon will kick into overdrive.

With few big-hitters justifying their price tags, Fantasy managers are prepared to turn to the form forwards to fire them up the rankings. Analysis of Martial’s displays for Monaco last year – where he racked up eight goals and an assist over nine league appearances between early March and early May – indicates he’s a confidence striker clearly capable of embarking on scoring streaks.

Certainly, United’s schedule directly after the Sunderland encounter – (ars, eve, MCI) – is anything but straightforward and does suggest a degree of caution. Given that they’ve just put six past Liverpool and the Saints in their last two, though, there’s plenty of reason for optimism that Van Gaal’s men, and Martial, can cement their fixture-proof status.

The Team

A 2-1 win over Newcastle earned Watford a second straight win as Quique Sanchez Flores’ men quickly adapt to life in the Premier League.

After ending Swansea’s unbeaten record in Gameweek 5, the Hornets have maintained momentum under the savvy Spaniard, with Odion Ighalo’s brace at St James’ Park taking his tally to four strikes in the opening six. At a price of just 5.1, the Nigerian has become vital to Watford’s survival quest, having netted all but one of his side’s five goals to date. Ighalo climbed to second in the FPL forward standings on the back of his weekend 13-point return, yet still sits in just 3% of sides, whilst Troy Deeney’s (5.3) trio of assists have also kept his points ticking over, despite his failure to score so far.

It’s not just up front that Watford look great value, though. Flores’ men have conceded just five goals so far – only Spurs and Man City’s backlines have been breached on fewer occasions. Indeed, Watford are the only side yet to concede at home and, having chalked up clean sheets against West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Allan Nyom, Craig Cathcart and Sebastian Prodl offer budget rotation options at just 4.5 apiece.

With Palace, Bournemouth, Stoke and West Ham in the next five, investing in Flores’ main men could well prove a valid tactic as the former Atletico Madrid manager looks to continue his side’s impressive return to the top-flight.

The Talking Point

Back-to-back home wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv and Arsenal have helped spark Chelsea’s flagging season into life and reignited our interest in Jose Mourinho’s key protagonists.

With Eden Hazard opening his account for the campaign in the 2-0 triumph over Arsene Wenger’s outfit, the Belgian is back on the menu as the Blues prepare for a very enticing run of fixtures. Given that Diego Costa could be set for a three-match ban, Hazard’s appeal is heightened at a time where most premium midfield alternatives are toiling – Alexis Sanchez continues to struggle for form, whilst David Silva’s injury worries have kept him sidelined for City’s last two league outings.

Back-to-back clean sheets have also elevated the Blues’ defence after a less-than-impressive opening few matches. With Thibaut Courtois sidelined for the next few weeks, and John Terry no longer a reliable starter, Asmir Begovic (5.0) and Kurt Zouma could soon become the flavour of the month. The latter served up a 15-point return against the Gunners and with Mourinho looking to play a high defensive line, the 5.4-priced Zouma has now started each of the last four Gameweeks. Cesar Azpilicuata, at 6.0, still looks a more secure option, having played from start to finish in all but one of the first six fixtures.

With clashes against Newcastle, Southampton, Villa and West Ham in the following four, Chelsea certainly have the schedule to build on their recent progress and shake up our Fantasy thinking as Mourinho’s men belatedly rediscover their title-winning form.

Do some of you try to apply reverse statistics strategy to your team? I mean, for me, of course some teams are more incline to Clean Sheets because they have ball possession etc.. but when it comes to budget defenders and less solid team, I tend not to give too much credit to Clea Sheets streaks. For instance, I have to replace Shaw and I made the choice to go for a budget defenser to free cash. The obivous move would be to go for Evans, since West Brom seem now to be pretty solid.

However, I don't see streaks lasting long when it comes to CS. At the opposite, Crystal Palace has not scored a single CS so far which is for me, a Statistical anomaly.. So I might pick Papé Souaré instead of Evans.

Do you guys sometimes think the same way? especially when it comes to CS?

No, teams who are good at CS - like WBA are always a better pick than those who are not - like Palace.

Its no accident, or statistical anomaly. Its Pulis.

      1. Tadic is the new Eriksen

This - the teams who get CS get CS for a reason: because they are good at defending. So they have got more chance of getting more in the future.

You have a point in statistical anomalies. I just don't think this approach applies well playing fpl. At least not in the long run, which should be the main focus anyway.

Some teams are good defensively and due some clean sheets (like Chelsea)

Others are just bad .... I don't see Sunderland keeping many this year

CS steaks are useful as shows defence are settled in

You just described something similar to the martingale system https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martingale_(betting_system)

Unfortunately, there's no merit to your strategy. Chance has no memory and no ability to actively correct itself.

In this instance, we are dealing with more than chance. We have performance statistics for both teams and can attempt to make predictions about the outcome of things such as clean sheets by looking at the attacking threat and defensive capabilities of the two teams.

3 clean sheets in a row could be a chance deviation away from the mean or it could be the result of defensive superiority. You have to decide which it is by looking at the finer details, for example... how many shots did they concede inside their own box, how many genuine goalscoring opportunities did they concede, etc.

      Everything depends on Silva.
If he is fit and you don't feel need to do Gomis => Martial, then you could upgrade Targett or just save.

If Gomez plays cup game, I just might do Gomez => Francis for a hit...

    Positive approach
    - I prefer him to Richards this week + have one defence sub then in case Darmian is benched
    - Can play him instead of Darmian next week (WAT)
    - Great pick for long term, can be played can be benched
    - I can save next weeks transfer for international break of do Sanchez => Haz if needed

    Negative/reasonable approach
    - Hit for a Bournemouth defender, what could go wrong...

Who would you change in this squad?

    Schmeichel / McCarthy

Monreal / Kolarav / Clyne / Steven Taylor / Oxford

    Hazard / Mane / Ozil / Mahrez / Surman

    Aguero / Wilson / Gomis

    I have 2 FT and £2.8 ITB

I see nobody's telling me to get rid of my 2 Arsenal duds lol

@ Triple P: getting rid of Mane may not be such a wise choice seeing that he's been racking up assists. I was considering going Ozil > Payet but I wanna wait till I see how he plays in mid week

@Shaun: Begovic sounds like a good choice, may just use that one FT and bank the other

yeah it's one of the more curious bandwagons - in part because it's been so long since united had someone who looked like they could actually score!

I'm normally one for hanging my hat on the cold hard currency of goals, but there's no way I'm getting him yet. He's not going to have a 75% shot conversion all season.

that said I don't think the fixtures are that bad. He'll play on the counter against arsenal for starters, so should get some chances.

Those stats Liverpool produced against Norwich were really encouraging, especially defensively, but also attack wise they got about twice as many shots as their per game average was before it.

And Norwich looked pretty good statistically. Villa looks about as bad as Liverpool.

Just means that Mou's been fuming at him for that comment. Naive kid, but he will learn the gamesmanship, he's in a good school for that at Mou's Chelsea.

By the way, his initial message was not confusing at all. It was very clear.

      Benteke to Ighalo/ Pelle

Pelle is a better option but the Ighalo can save almost 3.0m which could be used to do drastic changes else where like having Hazard (already have Sanchez).

Not a bad idea as they should keep a clean sheet and he doesn't get injured much or yellows so you should get a min of 3 points. Was it a couple of years ago he got a hattie against Newcastle?

I would have done the same if I didn't have some many injures and craving to get Martial (for Gomis). Will await news on Silva. Likey just get Azpi for -4 in for Shaw.

Hazard hasn't suddenly become a valid option because he scored at the weekend.

I have money in the bank so am going Chadli>Hazard (C).

Will get a massive jump in rank if it comes off but not without its risks.

103m team value good at this point?

      With this team, any suggestions?

      Butland

      Kolarov - Gomez - Darmian

      KDB - Shaqiri - Ayew - Mahrez - Sanchez

      Gomis - Aguero

      (McCarthy - Wilson - Richards - Saylor)

      0.7 ITB.

My front seven is a benching nightmare, but I dont know how to best fix it.

yeah you want to be around the 103 mark now, certainly 102 plus as a min

I'd be benching one of gomis or ayew over wilson, unlikely both will hit the heights

        that team isn't worth 103m.

Martial has the shortest anytime scorer odds (Paddy Power) for any player this gameweek:
      http://www.paddypower.com/football/football-matches/premier-league?ev_oc_grp_ids=3903

Hazard out at 9/5, quite for behind Sanchez at 11/10 and notably behind Pedro at 7/5. Interesting.

He is short because they take lots of bets on united matches and they know mugs will be prepared to back him at any odds.

Now a shrewd punter would be backing WBA CS at 5/2 imo.Not glamorous but odds are in your favour at least.

Looks like its more than just an FPL bandwagon. To be fair he looks absolutely dynamite when I have seen him, even when he didn't score against PSV. I think my plan to wait a few weeks is going to cost me at least 1m at this rate!!!

standard - because he's likely to be the starting Utd striker at home against a Sunderland defence

      Monreal > Darmian

      Thoughts?
