The Digest – Gameweek 7

Alexis Sanchez explodes into form with a hat-trick against Leicester. Tottenham’s momentum is building after sweeping aside City, whilst the big hitters are finally starting to deliver. Here’s our thoughts on Gameweek 7 in this week’s Digest…

The Player

A stunning hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-2 thrashing of Leicester finally announced Alexis Sanchez’ return to Fantasy form this season.

After a sluggish start, mainly brought about by his exertions for Chile in this summer’s Copa America, the Gunners’ wide man eventually translated his superb underlying statistics into Fantasy returns to reward those who patiently stood by his abilities as a heavy-hitter.

One look at last season’s returns highlights Sanchez’ explosive, yet erratic, showings. Somewhat surprisingly, the former Barcelona man produced returns in just 15 of his 35 league outings, blanking on 20 occasions, yet still racked up 16 goals, eight assists and 207 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his debut year at the Emirates.

Clearly, then, Sanchez will frustrate us and has the potential to embark on barren runs but has such a strong upside that, as Saturday’s 20-point haul demonstrated, going without him can be a dangerous tactic.

With Arsene Wenger now believing that his star player is finally back to his best, it’s little wonder that Sanchez is the second most transferred-in player since the weekend, as Fantasy managers belatedly scramble for a piece of the action.

The Team

An outstanding comeback win over City on Saturday stretched Tottenham’s unbeaten run to six matches as Mauricio Pochettino’s men moved into sixth spot after seven Gameweeks.

Encouragingly for Spurs and Fantasy managers alike, the club’s form at both ends of the pitch bodes well for future returns. Kevin de Bruyne’s early strike at the Lane is the only goal Pochettino’s side have conceded in the last four, with clean sheets accrued against Everton, Sunderland and Palace over that period. The summer addition of Toby Alderweireld at centre-half, allied with the decision to move Eric Dier into the double-pivot has paid off handsomely in terms of improving resilience, and the duo’s potential at both ends of the pitch was highlighted after they both bagged a goal in the 4-1 thrashing of Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Crucially for Pochettino, his attack finally seems to have found their form. Spurs went into the weekend having scored just five goals in the first six fixtures but ran riot against City. Harry Kane finally opened his account for the campaign, whilst fit-again Christian Eriksen – who was afforded his first start since Gameweek 2 – has now earned an assist in each of his last three outings. With Erik Lamela chipping in with a goal and assist, and Heung-Min Son’s energy boosting their pressing game in the final third, the north London outfit are starting to click.

The upcoming schedule – which sees that face Swansea, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea in the next seven – is by no means easy but, as evidenced on Saturday, Spurs look to have the form and momentum to prevail.

Talking Point

Sanchez and Kane’s return to form was mirrored by Daniel Sturridge as the Liverpool striker netted twice in a 3-2 win over Aston Villa.

Finally back in first-team contention in the previous Gameweek, Sturridge thrived alongside the dynamic Danny Ings as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in his 3-4-1-2 formation. Tellingly, Sturridge played from start to finish against Tim Sherwood’s side, suggesting he’s fast approaching full match sharpness after months on the sidelines.

After a number of weeks where the big hitters have failed to justify their hefty price tags, is the tide starting to turn? So far, the Fantasy games have been dominated by Leicester pair Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy whilst Dimitri Payet has wasted no time in bringing his Marseille form to the Premier League.

Last weekend served a timely reminder, though, that top class talents will prevail and keeping faith in the premium picks can pay off. As Sergio Aguero (NEW, BOU, NOR) and Eden Hazard (SOU, AVL, LIV) both prepare for three home matches in the next four, their loyal owners will be hoping that the duo take their cue from last week’s events and start to justify their premium price tags.

    DDG I McCarthy

    Davies I Darmian I Monreal I Richards I Oxford

    KDB I Payet I Ayew I Sanchez I Mahrez

    Martial I Aguero I Ighalo

Would you change anything? 0.2m in the bank.

    Here's one suggestion:

    1) Switch Darmian > Bertrand
    2) Switch Richards > Dawson

Had such rotten luck with captaincy. Cost me too many points. Scored below average this week. I have gone with the obvious choice each gameweek (top on polls). Aguero for the last 4 weeks, Rooney for the opening 3 weeks. I've had just 2 assists in that time. Is it time to just take a chance? Was gonna go for Payet, decided on Aguero. Been regretting it since Saturday. Should I just go for in form players now or wait it out because the big names tend to deliver in the end and sometimes patience is needed and a big score comes? How are you people approaching it? Are you just as annoyed? Not known FPL to fail me with captaincy like this before.

Yeah, it's just that City's fixtures have been favourable and Aguero is the best striker in the league IMO. He can be in the worse form and still be deadly (usually) with 1 or 2 moments of magic.

Well i've had him from GW1 and captained him from GW1 the best ive had is 6 points so 12. As poor as that is i cannot ignore him for the next 2 gameweeks so i'll stick with him. I just cannot see him doing poorly for much longer - is the link that silva not playing got anything to do with it? I'll be more confident (C) Aguero when Silva is back

I'll probably do the same. Maybe many people will be put off by having him in now. Save 2 transfers that way, and if he doesn't deliver, I'll maybe get Sanchez and Sturridge in. GW1 is a long time! More frustrating for you. Silva back for CL so he should start on the weekend, that should help.

It has been difficult. I think there is a case to be made for selecting your captain based on who's playing the most terrible defence combined with how central a player is to his team's attacking play. The obvious poll choice doesn't always pay attention to this fact, or not enough.

Rooney, Aguero and Sanchez all disappointed while playing in teams that either don't score enough, shared the goals among the front 4 or didn't need to score more goals in a match. That's why Mahrez seemed a great captain option in hindsight, even though that's easy to say now.

The weakest defences at the moment are
      Sunderland - (WHU at home)
      Chesea - (SOU at home)
      Leicster - (NOR at home)
      Villa - (STO at home)
      Bournemouth - (WAT at home)
      Newcastle (City Away)

For next week I guess a KDB / Aguero would be good, even if it's a wait and see with Yaya and Silva. Maybe a West Ham Player. Most will captain Aguero though. Sturrdige or possibly Coutinho could be great, Sturridge looks sharp, Everton has a lot of injuries at the back, Lukaku looks sharp and it's a derby. Possibly end to end stuff, and goals could be scored at both ends. The safe option is a City Player though, maybe even Kolarov if you fancy a clean sheet by City.

Hesitated with my transfers and now can't afford Wilson -> Vardy after the latter's price rise. Westwood (Stoke at home) is my fifth sub. Any thoughts appreciated.

    A) Play Westwood
    B) Wilson & Cedric -> Vardy and Jonny Evans
    C) Wilson & Pedro -> Vardy & £9.4m Midfielder (possibly Yaya if confirmed to be fit)

    Cheers guys

Sorry to bang on by please rate my WC team!
    Myhill/Butland
    Dier/Dawson/Francis/Kolorov/Cresswell
    Payet/Hazard/Sanchez/Mahrez/Hoolahan
    Aguero/Ighalo/Vardy

    Any thoughts?

Thinking of going for KDB over Hoolahan
but I'd have to ship Aguero out for Diof/Sakho/Pelle/Martial to make it work.
I'm dead set on going AOA GW9 with this team

Myhill is a bit of a worry but probably worth a punt
      Butland isn't a good option.
Dier is on 4 yellows, maybe go with Toby instead.

Looks good mate. Like Timbo said, Dier on 4 YCs, switch to Toby or Bavies.
Myhill looks safe for a few weeks still.
Ighalo nice cheapie - but maybe consider Berahino or Diouf for slight differential (and if you can stretch that far)

United can only play one way under Van Gaal," Neville continued. "He won't change; he'll try to dominate the ball, he'll send his full-backs forward.

"That means Daley Blind and Chris Smalling could become exposed if Arsenal can win the ball back in good areas. For that reason, [Wenger] will probably stick with [Theo] Walcott."

Wenger in pre match PC today said that Utd game will not affect his selection for the game tonight.

They'll be rotated. Especially because of Giroud's suspension. But Wenger likes playing Walcott away because he's got more chance of playing on the break.

Don't think Arsenal strikers are the way forward at the moment. Look more at Sanchez.

Hi guys, would be grateful for some advice, who would you bench for GW8 out of this mid/fwd setup?

Mahrez (nor), Hoolahan (LEI), Mata (ars), Payet (sun), Sanchez (MUN)
Vardy (nor), Martial (ars), Kun (NEW)

Not sure how much game time Hoolahan is going to get but if he plays then LEI at home seems like the place to be to deliver the goods

    Butland (Ruddy)
    Kolarov Richards Dawson (Francis Darmian)
Payet Mahrez Sánchez De Bruyne (Hoolahan)
    Vardy Gomis Agüero

Really struggling for the armband decision this week. Everything in my being is saying Aguero but I've only ever had 2pts from him all season with the captaincy... But if he comes off.... ahhhhh!

    Suggestions lads?

I have similar mids and forwards.

I went for Sakho over Vardy and I am captaining him. In your dilemma I think I would go with Payet.

Also noticed you're benching Hoolahan, I'm benching Gomis instead....not sure on that one either!

Hoolahan for Gomis is another thing I am pondering. In fact I'm leaning that way now. I was put off for the rotation risk but I think he'll play the majority or wont feature which would mean Gomis comes in anyway...

Pretty sure he is most likely to be rested on away games and Gomis subbed off last game makes me nervous.

Okay well that change is now locked in. unsure about the (c) though.... I'm looking at Aguero.... and to quote R Kelly, "my head is telling me no... but my body... my body.... is telling me yes"!

How are people looking to get Agbonlahor in when he's declared fit?

Aguero to agbon seems the logical move

The man's not played any form of competetive football in pretty much a year, going to take quite some time

How do these look for 2 free transfers:

    Ayew > Payet

Wilson > Berahino (max £6.2m) - would like someone cheaper as already have Kun/Diouf but Ighalo doesnt look too promising

Probably your best option. I'm not sure on Ighalo either, in my squad but will be bench fodder most weeks.

I wouldnt mind rotating with Hoolahan as a 3rd striker/5th mid but i know ill get it wrong one week. Maybe go for Jerome?

Yeh not overly convinced but he was decent last season in a minimal attacking team. Just hoping that Wilson isnt due a drop before the weekend so i can make the mid transfer instead.

Where is Charlie Austin when you need him??

Like the first option... probably would go for Vardy over Berahino

Hoping that Wilson wont drop and force me to do the second transfer. Unfortunately i cant afford Vardy

Thought he is out for a good few weeks.... I made the change on Sunday. With Vardy's brace I knew he would get a rise and figured Wilson (as he as a little bit of a bandwagon) he would fall.
