This Much We Know – Gameweek 8

Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez serve a timely reminder of their world class talents. Kevin de Bruyne strengthens his claim as a must-have big hitter but Eden Hazard’s toils continue. Riyad Mahrez’ Fantasy potential could be curtailed by The Tinkerman, Christian Eriksen steps up his consistency, whilst Sadio Mane looks a major differential.

Class is permanent with Aguero and Sanchez…
After Alexis Sanchez set the tone with a hat-trick against Leicester last week, Sergio Aguero’s five-goal haul against Newcastle underlined why, in certain cases, it’s provident to be patient with big hitters. The duo banished their stuttering starts and have exploded into form simultaneously, scoring six goals apiece in the last week in all competitions. It’s been a long time coming but, finally, the South American pair look back to their blistering best – going without either of them now looks a very dangerous tactic.

…and De Bruyne deserves his big hitter status…
Three goal and two assists in a trio of league starts has underlined why City were prepared to splash the cash on the former Chelsea wide man. De Bruyne has played a part in five of City’s last eight goals, strengthening his claim as the leading contender amongst Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield. A double-up with Sanchez in the centre of the park is quickly becoming the preferred tactic for many, with the Belgian’s explosive potential looking increasingly difficult to ignore.

Chelsea’s toils aren’t helping Hazard…
Whilst Sanchez and Aguero finally translated their underlying numbers into points, the situation is a little different for Chelsea’s big hitter. Jose Mourinho’s side look alarmingly short of form and Hazard’s Fantasy potential has suffered significantly as a result, with the Belgian offering little evidence to suggest he can arrest his recent malaise. With Sanchez and De Bruyne key targets, Hazard looks surplus to requirement as we look to free up budget.

…whilst Pedro’s minutes need monitored…
The Spaniard’s owners were placed on high alert after he was omitted from the starting XI for the first time this term by Jose Mourinho. Replacement Willian vindicated his manager’s decision, though, by scoring for the third successive match in all competitions, with Pedro only handed minutes at the break due to the Brazilian’s withdrawal through illness. Now down to 9.3, Pedro is second only to Yaya Toure amongst midfielders for transfers out this week and with the international break now upon us, that exodus looks likely to pick up pace.

Sako’s star is fading fast…
Similar to Pedro, the Palace summer signing’s immediate impact has quickly died out, leaving him warming the Selhurst Park bench against West Brom last weekend. Alan Pardew’s decision to turn to last year’s attacking midfield trio, Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon, paid off as the Eagles soared into fourth spot. Back-to-back spot-kicks from Yohan Cabaye highlights the numerous options within the Selhurst Park midfield but Sako’s name may be struck from that list, if Saturday’s team sheet is anything to go by.

Ranieri’s tinkering could derail Mahrez’ season…
The Leicester manager reminded us just why he’s known as “The Tinkerman” by surprisingly dropping Riyad Mahrez to the bench for the trip to Norwich. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, Ranieri’s decision paid off as the Foxes recovered from their Gameweek 7 home loss to Arsenal by defeating the Canaries at Carrow Road. Sitting in 54% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides, we may have to reconsider Mahrez if Ranieri feels he can get away with omitting the Algerian on occasion, with Jamie Vardy looking far more secure by comparison.

There’s no shortage of Wilson replacements…
As the Callum Wilson exodus picks up pace, a number of budget options threw their hat in the ring at the weekend. Glenn Murray scored once and missed a penalty on his first start in Wilson’s absence for Bournemouth, whilst Odion Ighalo continues to look like Watford’s only source of goals – the 5.3-priced frontman’s fifth of the season was accompanied by maximum bonus, taking him to fourth overall amongst strikers. With Aleksandar Mitrovic finding the net at City ahead of Newcastle’s kind upcoming schedule, there are still plenty of budget differentials to consider for those looking to free up cash.

Mane is starting to motor…
A goal and assist away to Chelsea highlighted the Southampton midfielder’s fixture-proof appeal as the schedule starts to turn in his favour. Whilst Graziano Pelle sits in 18% of FPL sides, Mane remains a real differential – just 6% of managers have taken the plunge on a player who has delivered two goals and five assists in his last four starts. The Saints have now put eight past Swansea, United and Chelsea in the previous three and with Dusan Tadic also in decent form, investment in the St Mary’s outfit looks top of many agendas.

A consistent Eriksen adds more to the midfield mix…
One goal in the final 15 Gameweeks of 2014/15 is indicative of how frustrating the Tottenham midfielder can be as a Fantasy asset. Sunday’s two-goal haul at Swansea, however, suggests Eriksen may be a little more reliable this time around – having recovered from injury, he’s now produced returns in four of his five league appearances so far. With four home clashes and a trip to Bournemouth in the next six, can the Dane justify that 8.3 price tag and barge his way into our five-man midfields?

Lukaku is tempting…
Despite a horrendous opening schedule, the Everton frontman sits third amongst strikers after racking up three goals and an assist against West Brom and Liverpool since last Monday. Whereas the likes of West Ham, Leicester, Southampton and Swansea have viable goal scoring alternatives in the centre of the park, Ross Barkley’s recent lack of form heightens Lukaku’s importance to the Toffees’ cause. Whilst the playmaker blanked for the fifth time in six league matches, the big Belgian is starting to pick up pace as the main Everton target ahead of their superb run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 onwards.

We shouldn’t write Ayew off…
Back in the goals against Spurs at the Liberty, the Ghana international rewarded his 20% owners by climbing into the top five midfielder placings. Ayew banished a three-match barren streak to notch for the third time in four home appearances as Garry Monk’s men finally rediscovered their scoring touch at a time when Bafetimbi Gomis’ toils continue. Although many who doubled-up on the Swansea pair are looking to part company with the misfiring Frenchman, Ayew, at 7.2, seems worth retaining for now.

Theo is looking undroppable …
It’s five straight starts in the league now for the England international, with Olivier Giroud once again consigned to a bench-warming berth. Tellingly, Walcott kept his place up top despite the fact that Giroud was suspended for midweek Champions League duties – dispelling the notion that Arsene Wenger would alternate on a regular basis. It’s two goals and three assists in the last three across all competitions now for Walcott, whose speed and movement up top have helped the Gunners score ten times over those fixtures – given his side’s outstanding form, Wenger will surely be very reluctant to change things for the Gameweek 9 visit to Watford.

To everyone transferring now, what's your logic - avoid price drops and catch the rises? I've been burned badly transferring this early before on an international week, leaving gaps in my teams requiring hits - what's your motivation?

Thing is, if you are that unlucky - ok, you take a hit. Not the biggest deal in the world. Easy to forget you also get to transfer in a form player

yeah, I take more risks in the beginning of the season to build up some team value. I am usually careful on international breaks, but this time I have made one of my two transfers to avoid pricefall/catch pricerise.

Catch price rises, but more importantly not pay more than I need to for the players I wanted. Need what little budget I have left to replace my lower cost defenders at some point

Fair enough to you all, cheers for the responses. I'm pretty risk averse, and hate taking hits, so probably explains my hesitancy. This season is such a struggle though that every point is like a precious treasure that I can't afford to lose, so I can't imagine giving 4 away on a gamble. Maybe I need a change of policy though judging by results for me so far this year!

I'm with you Anathallo. Last season was my first in years and I was constantly chasing team value and wanting my ideal XI. Finished top 350,000 after i calmed down with the transfers second half of the season.

This year i told myself to wait as long as possible to make transfers and avoid hits at all costs. I just had a 100 gwk and jumped up to 33,000 OR so I'm sticking to my gameplan.

However, I'm sure that a good balance is realistically the best way to go.

Only have 0.1 ITB now, and this team:

      Myhill Butland

De Bruyne Sanchez Payet Mahrez Westwood
      Aguero Martial Vardy

As a rookie, pretty happy in the top 10k but missing a Man City mid now (shipped Yaya for Mane) and perhaps stuck with two cheapie forwards which will make form/fixture changes harder and harder.

Currently planning 3-5-2 w/ Ighalo on bench

    0FT £1.6
    Cech / Myhill
    Kolarov / Bellerin / Dawson / Nyom / Francis
    Sanchez / Mane / Payet / Barkley / Mahrez
    Aguero / Vardy / Ighalo

Should I take hits to better balance my forwards? Or do surgery to bring in KDB?

    A. Balance:
Ighalo + Barkley > Pelle + £4.5-£5.5 such as Drinkwater/Hoolahan or even cheaper to reduce benching headaches for a -8 hit

    B. Surgery:
    Cech + Mahrez + Barkley > Gomes + KDB + max £5.1 for a -12 hit

C: Keep Calm and Barkley on:
Barkley from GW11 will be handy. Cech looks good for CS and Myhill at risk. Long season...

Built with a few hits over last 3 couple weeks to bring in Sanchez, Vardy, Francis (dropped Ayew, Skrtel and Wilson)

So far hits have paid off big time. So I am in the "take a risk" camp

Only saw highlights but do we know how KDB worked with Silva? Obviously they were rampant against a poor Newcastle team but he seemed to always be the more advanced of the two. Want one of them but not sure which, KDB seems more of a goal threat and more selfish.

I know it's form versus fixtures this season but Leicester's next 6 are: sot CPL wba WAT new MUN. The fixtures get even worse thereafter.

With the exception of Palace at home (back to back clean sheets) and Newcastle away, that's a tough set of defences to face. Maybe something for those looking to bring in Vardy or ditching Mahrez to consider.

No they're not, not from an attacking perspective.

Southampton have one of the tightest defences in the league (no one has conceded less shots in the box),
        West Brom have Pulis
Watford and United have the second most clean sheets this season, and no one has conceded less than Watford
Crystal Palace are on the back of successive clean sheets.
        Newcastle... well Newcastle are Newcastle.

Genuinely, I don't think Leicester are going to continue to score as they have been doing.

The reason I want to ditch Mahrez in not the fixtures, its more to find a diff. At this stage of the season to me, its important to ditch someone like him with ownership over 50% if you aspire a good finish - something I have not done yet.

I wondered the same thing before the game started. Didn't make any sense. When playing against a fast paced team that moves the ball as quickly as Arsenal do, you surely play the only physical and energetic midfielder you have, rather than ageing legs.

Hi lads, feeling a little wary of my team at the minute. Sitting in 400k overall at the minute. Lots of deadwood and defence is abysmal. I appreciate feedback. There's about 5 transfers I need to desperately make over the next few gw. (Already used wc) It's hard to prioritise which come first tbh. Is it sensible to play without aguero? I feel spreading money around my team can work out better than paying 13m+ on one player.

Not a bad team to be honest mate. I'd get rid of Azpi for an Arsenal defender and maybe Mata for Mane. I feel like Aguero is essential though, simply because everyone has him, and if you get a weekend like the last you'll end up slipping. But that's not set in stone - just a guess!

Isn´t the patience with players very short this year? Or I am just getting older? The one that was recommended to get last week, people stand in line to sell this week. Last week Mahrez and Martial essential almost. This week they are the mouses with chopped of heads that the cat just brought in. Why the extreme impatience?

    1. Le Limpar
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Definitely. I think a lot has to do with how quick the transfer market works these days, with rises and falls happening so far. And I think that has a lot to do with smart phone ownership. The amount of people who transfers on a Saturday night now watching MOTD... I don't remember that happening much at all in years gone by.

It also means you get stung if you don't get on good bandwagons like Payet and Mahrez. Maybe in years gone by you would have been able to take a week or 2 to assess, but now the ownership rockets and you slip ranking by having been cautious.

        Cautious is old hat basically.

We get players that we think will do well..not players that will give u price rises..price rises will come when ur player did well

Similarly u sell player that is unlikely to give u points..not merely looking at who is falling in price

Just kneejerking as usual. Dont see how martial suddenly become a bad option(not owning him though)..nor 1 game benching of a 5.5m midfielder with over 50% ownership deserves to be transfered out

Dunno, I am a rookie so can not speak to prior years.

Mahrez wasn't last week. He began well in GW1. Payet built up good too from GW1.

Martial was never essential. At least not on here. It was decent risk with other forwards not firing and similar priced options injured or inconsistent.

        • 14 Years

I wondering this also. People were head over heels with Martial 2 weeks ago, now he's an expendable asset. I value patience. Ofc sometimes you might have to make early transfers due to price changes and budget constrains, but general principle I have is to keep calm and not to make harsh moves.

I don't agree with the Costa part. He looks lively. But yeah, the team looks down. According to me, the first part where Mou went wrong was in the window. It was evident that the teams were getting stronger due to the TV rights. Should've signed a forward. Instead went for a risky Falcao. Next up, he wanted Stones and didn't buy someone else once that failed. Another thing I feel Mou should do that its time to ditch the counter attack for a while. Lets try to be the big team. Trust me against Southampton, Porto, Palaca, Newcastle 1st half we looked the smaller team. Lastly I believe, Mou shoukd take responsibility and stop with his official ranting.

                I'm not sure on Costa.

He needs to take some responsibility himself.

Mourinho saying he was MoM vs Arsenal in the game where he conduct was deemed worthy of a 3 game ban. It condoned the behaviour as an acceptable means to win a game.

Classless by Mourinho and classless by Costa. But Costa should be being told that it isn't acceptable. Nor is being suspended Willy nilly letting your team mates down.

Well said. Ultimately, that team is a huge mess, and unfortunately, Hazard is on it. Meanwhile, Sanchez has found form, KDB is producing 9 ppg, Mane his hot, and now Theo is a total option. There is no room to have the luxury of acquiring an 11M midfielder who might be a differential. More so, when Hazard explodes, he gets a goal & an assist. Meanwhile, KDB (Silva, more or less, too) does that already for 1M less, and Sanchez is scoring like the game is basketball.

Afternoon people, I'm on a wc - is it time to ditch kolarov? City looking leaky, clichy almost back... Haven't seen any live city games though so not sure how Kolarov's looked? Thinking of Bertrand in and using funds to upgrade 5th mid to hoolahan... Any views appreciated

Kolarov looks great in games, and if anything is unlucky not to have more attacking returns. Bertrand also very attacking (& fixtures are glorious), but I'd be trying to get in both on a WC.

Kompany's absence is the main cause of leakiness. Agree on Clichy being a problem, but Kolarov is so good from an FPL perspective that it's worth enduring (and planning for) the games he's out.

If someone challenges you to a bet on Klopp not being the next Pool manager, bet your mortgage on he is!

Romantic manager joining romantic club. He fell in love with Liverpool when Dortmund played Liverpool in pre season during 2014.

😆 "Fell in love" with a "romantic club". 😆

Rather may see as a stepping stone to bigger things. Although it's one step below Dortmund where he already was.

      Klopp isn't that good. 😉

It is Michael Zorc and Zeljko Buvac who are wonderful.
