Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 8

Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini confirm that Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero were withdrawn for precautionary reasons ahead of the upcoming internationals. West Brom have worries in defence, whilst Liverpool’s playmaker pulls out of the Brazil squad due to injury earlier today. Here’s our round up of the weekend injury news…

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez came off after 81 minutes against Manchester United in visible discomfort, though Arsene Wenger was quick to allay fears over any injury, confirming that the wide man is set to feature for Chile in the upcoming internationals:

“He has a little groin problem. Unfortunately he goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile and he loves so much to play for his country and he will play against Brazil [on Friday] and Peru [next] Tuesday so the game at home against Brazil he will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back in good shape.”

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark sat out the Villains’ 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City after picking up a thigh strain, Tim Sherwood has confirmed.

Chelsea
Goalscorer Willian was replaced by Loic Remy at the 64-minute mark of Chelsea’s home clash against Southampton, with Jose Mourinho later explaining that he took counsel with the club doctor after the Brazilian became ill during the break:

“When the fans boo the Willian decision, I would do that too if I didn’t know he was vomiting at half-time and the doctor said it would be hard for him to carry on.”

Leicester City
Jamie Vardy received a heavy blow to the knee in the first half of Leicester’s trip to Norwich City but was able to carry on and complete the match. Claudio Ranieri sought to allay fears over the form striker’s fitness, insisting that Vardy sustained no serious damage from the collision:

“No, nothing serious. When I saw Vardy on the ground I thought it was a bad injury because Jamie never stays down. When he came close to our bench, the physio said it was his knee, but he was stable and he continued to play.”

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho has withdrawn from Brazil’s squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, with Liverpool’s official site offering no details on the nature of his injury.

Danny Ings confirmed he sustained a minor injury during the Merseyside derby but expects to be fit for upcoming England duties:

”I struggled through the game – I just got my ankle caught in Phil Jagielka’s legs. As the game went on I felt that I couldn’t move as much. It will be assessed but should be fine.”

Manchester City
Following his five-goal frenzy, Sergio Aguero was substituted after 66 minutes at the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini said that the Argentine marksman received treatment at half time after taking kicks to his back and hamstring in the first period, so the Sky Blues boss elected to exercise caution and manage Aguero’s minutes:

“He had treatment at half time, and to give him more minutes he could have scored but we must be cautious about his fitness, because he could be injured. Last season Kun finished the season without any problem. He is doing a different preparation, so I’m not worried about injuries, you can be injured by kicks of course but muscle injuries he should not have any more.”

Newcastle United
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu picked up a hamstring complaint in the process of trying to prevent Aguero scoring his third goal of an eventual 6-1 thrashing. The Switzerland U19 international is now set to undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Norwich City
Lewis Grabban rolled his ankle during training last week so was ruled out of the Foxes clash, but Alex Neil expects him to be sidelined for longer than a week.

Stoke City
Marko Arnautovic was subbed off 21 minutes from time after scoring the only goal during the Potters’ visit to Villa Park. Mark Hughes played down the reason for the winger’s withdrawal:

“He just cramped up in his back which needed unlocking.”

Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf was stretchered off in the second half after damaging his hip. Hughes admitted that the striker is unlikely to team up with Senegal during the international break.

“He’s been in a bit of pain. He’s got an issue with his hip and hopefully hasn’t done anything to the capsule in the joint. But he’s struggling to walk and I’d be surprised if he meets up with his international team because he’s in a lot of pain and can’t weight bear.”

Swansea
Kyle Naughton missed yesterday’s home draw with Spurs due to personal reasons, reports in the local press have confirmed.

Watford
Jose Manuel Jurado missed Watford’s trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while Ikechi Anya has been given the go ahead to travel with Scotland despite being subbed off with a leg injury.

West Bromwich Albion
Jonny Evans lasted just 24 minutes at Crystal Palace after picking up a hamstring strain, while James Morrison took a blow to his ankle in the second half. Both players underwent scans to determine the extent of their injuries:

“We’ve got a problem with (James) Morrison – he’s felt his ankle. The home nations, we want to help them as much as we can. Me in particular, if I can. Fingers crossed they’ll be okay. If they’re anywhere near it, we’ll give them a chance to play. It will be all down to the doctor. He’ll scan them tomorrow. The scans now are fantastic so he’ll know whether they’re serious injuries or not.”

Elsewhere in the Baggies camp, Gareth McAuley suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that saw him miss the home clash with Everton last Monday. The defender is expected to recover in time to start for Northern Ireland during their World Cup qualifiers.

Darren Fletcher has trained for Scotland earlier today despite picking up a knock during West Brom’s loss at Palace.

West Ham United
Winston Reid was subbed off after 66 minutes at the Stadium of Light, whilst Victor Moses has withdrawn from international duties with Nigeria, claiming a lack of fitness.

planning to play my WC after GW11 when the fixtures turn good for some, but i really only wanna change my gk and defence, which has let me down in recent weeks, should i just use my FTs to swap my defenders week by week or should i use the wildcard and change all my defenders?

anyone got any better ideas of when to use the wildcard?

Keep it for now, the fact is that there are no defensively outstanding teams so far, it's been hit and miss for everyone so far...

Still a long time until then... monitor the situation week-by-week. As someone already replied, there haven't been any defensively outstanding teams yet (now that City have started to leak), so it's tough to gauge.

Thinking of using mine now as I am looking at 9 men (if mahrez doesn't play again), + price drops..I've already lost 0.3. You can set up reasonably well for gw11 if you WC now.

I would be quite hesitant about making too many drastic changes for the GW11 fixture swings.

There's a strong chance you 'throw the baby out with the bathwater', shuffling funds all over the place to accommodate known inconsistent performers from teams like Everton, Palace, Spurs.

I'd say depends on your WC strategy - whether it's i) a chance to take stock and consolidate your performance and team to the new template, or ii) opportunity to take larger risks with the favourable fixtures.

What do you reckon Agueros ownership will be before the next GW? I say 42%. And if he explodes with a hat-trick or more , then it goes up to 47% by the next GW.

    Hi DZ!
Currently sitting at 1k and looking to stay there! (In no small part due to your advice)

    Myhill - McCarthy
    Kolarov - Zouma - Darmian - Williams - Richards
    KDB - Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez - Westwood
    Aguero - Martial - Vardy

    A) Martial > Pelle
    B) Darmian > WAT/CPL defender
    C) Save

    Cheers!

Southampton highly likely to score. They are in tremendous form and barring injury to key players, should score against a Leicester side that plays free-flowing football. I brough Pelle in after the Utd game and I am very happy. I think he will have a great year, along with Mane of course.
tl, dr- You may want to reconsider Southampton.

For those who have transitioned to a 3-5-2 over the past few weeks, has the arrival to form of the big boys in midfield along with that of Pelle/Lukaku/Vardy got you thinking about a return to 3-4-3?

      • 8 Years

Yes I am. Not just form, but also those 3 gonna have the fixtures on their side. 3-4-3 it is.

There is more value to be found in the forwards than the mids the likes of Ighalo and Vardy allows for you to have a strong front 8 and this allows for flexibility for playing both formations

      1. Shifty
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

Yup Ighalo + Vardy is definitely something to consider but keeping in mind that one of Pelle/Lukaku seem to be quite crucial picks in the coming weeks, am wondering whether i should upgrade Vardy to one of them in a 3-5-2...

or downgrade 1 mid in order to get one of Pelle/Lukaku + Vardy in a 3-4-3

    3. Ser Davos
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

I bloody love 3-5-2 on a personal note. Not too popular with the veterans on here but undoubtedly sticking with it. I find mids more long term picks, they have have access to more bonus, assists and clean sheet points (plus extra for scoring) compared with forwards and having 5 in midfield give's your mids all the breathing space they need.

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

When I consider my mid doesn't have the like's of Walcott, Mata, Mane, Eriksen (tip of the iceberg), 5 slots isn't enough.

Up top, Pelle and Martial are grand in the mid to upper price bracket but other than that, I'm unconvinced as it stands. Vardy and Ighalo perfectly match the 3-5-2 too.

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

I'll most likely be going into GW9 with a mid of Sanchez/Payet/Mane/Ayew/Mahrez with Aguero-Vardy up top and am very pleased with it at the moment.

I also have 2.0 in the bank for a Vardy upgrade come GW11...for either Pelle or Lukaku while maintaining my 3-5-2.

But am wondering whether I should consider an Ayew downgrade as well to accommodate both Vardy and one of Pelle/Lukaku in a 3-4-3.

          1. Ser Davos
            • 8 Years
            8 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, I'm not averse to the 3-4-3 and I relate to your doubts.

I just find someone like Ayew (like several mids before him) is a lot less stressful to own over a Lukaku and a Pelle.

            1. Shifty
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 7 months ago

Exactly what i'm thinking as well. Can see the merits of both working in the long term.

The only strong consideration to move towards a 3-4-3 is getting in a captaincy contender - but am not convinced Pelle is a captain contender...and Lukaku sure as hell isn't getting any armbands slapped on him.

There lies a fundamental difference though...I have been playing for a few weeks with a 3-5-2 built around Aguero.

It seems like you have been forced into playing a 3-5-2 having gone Aguero-less before...

    5. Portsmouth Bubblejet

I've changed to 3-5-2 this week, primarily due to the lack of a good cheap 5th midfielder to match Boyd last year (and even he flattered to deceive).

The recent tendency for Mahrez to be benched by Leicester in certain tactical games means that your bench player is likely to get on - and Westwood, Wanyama etc. just won't deliver you any points.

Equally, at £5.2m Ighalo was by far the best value for a bench player. With Vardy and Mahrez also being underpriced, it's quite possible to get a strong 5-man midfield.

Yes, I'm concerned that one of Lukaku and Pelle will discover the consistency that they've not delivered in previous years, but you can easily flip out Vardy + Mahrez for Lukaku/Pelle + £4.3m mid if necessary.

But this puts you back in the same situation of often being reliant on your fifth midfielder, and with Xmas rotation ahead, I'm not sure that's a great idea.

Thanks PB - that does make sense.

I've gone for an extreme 3-5-2, with a non playing 4.3 striker as my 3rd striker but have stacked defence a little bit more just in case they need to come on. Slight misstep on my part, as I could have easily afforded Ighalo as my 3rd striker.

I guess the main headscratcher I have now is which of the following routes to take toward GW11 as it would affect my next few transfers

        A) upgrade Vardy to one of Pelle/Lukaku and keep 3-5-2
        B) Keep Vardy, upgrade my fodder striker to one of Pelle/Lukaku in a 3-4-3 (can do so with a hit or two). This would likely involve shipping Ayew out.

In the eventuality that Jurgen Klopp replaces Rodgers at Liverpool, would the LFC players become a better assets to FPL managers.

We all know that Klopp is a big fan of attacking football and free scoring style.
With the likes of Studge, Tekker, Ings, Firmino, Couts in the team, will that enhance their FPL returns?

That will all depend on the next Manager.

I do rate Moreno, same style as Dani Alves (barca), Marcelo (Madrid) and Walker (spurs), but still lack the defensive quality. They are Attacking defenders, if we can say. 🙂

I think it's more about how Rodgers failed to setup a team post Suarez. The squad looks horribly imbalanced. Lack of quality wingers and a lot of players playing out of position was what hurt Liverpool. I won't be jumping on them unless we see a settled squad raking in points

This question is unanswerable even by Pellegrini.
We'll just need to wait and see how he fares on Intl duty and wait for the presser next week to know if he's back.

Which defense would you bring in this week? I am tempted by Southampton and Arsenal. Who else do we think will keep a few in the next 6-8 games.

        Spurs, why Spurs?

LIV bou AVL ars WHM CHE

I don't see a lot of clean sheets there. A new Liverpool under a new manager, Arsenal away with West Ham and Chelsea at home. West Ham have been the best travelling side this season and Chelsea' s problem is defence not the attack.

        What's your theory?

          Well said, AK.

I'm looking at 3 options right now
          A) Bellerin

That order is fine for me. I don't fancy Newcastle at the back at all. You are getting Janmaat just for attacking returns. You might even get a goal, but then again, stick the bread and butter of FPL for defenders. Clean sheets.

Hi all. What transfer would you make with this team. 1ft & 0.5itb.

    Butland (McCarthy)
    Kolorov, Williams, Zouma (Gomez, Richards)
    Sanchez, Silva, Payet, Mahrez, Redmond
    Aguero, Vardy (Diouf)

    (a) I'm thinking Zouma out to either Monreal/Bellerin. Thinking Monreal as lower ownership or
    (b) Save ft as surely Zouma will play v Villa & get a cs. I feel they won't though or
    (c) Other options I've missed.

    Thoughts & thanks.

Why 3-5-2 does the biz for me...

    2011-12
VDV Bale Dempsey Siggy + Silva Nani/Young/Valencia Walcott

Walters (yes, this guy was gold early doors) Sinclair (+ little Dyer) McClean (sensational with MON at the helm) + Sess

    2012-13
The personal mistake of Bale to Hazard early doors instead of having the space to keep both. Switching mids short term does not work — see the Ayew/Payet hop skotching of this season for an example.

Walcott/Santi Mata/(Hazard) Bale Fellaini Michu Nolan

This season the mid options are fantastic right across all price brackets. When you factor in Ighalo as a base price player then it's tailor made for me.

To conclude, let me give you this one reason. Bafa Gomis scored 4 goals in 4 games at the start of this season. How many bonus did he accrue? 1, that's right, 1 measly bonus. You may as well have played an extra City defender.

    1. Ser Davos
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

Williams got more bonus in that time and he only gathered one clean sheet ffs!

    2. BearHug
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

The midfield 5 is a formidable way to play the game. But I think you cant entirely dismiss the idea that a well performing forward cant get the bonuses point.

The comparison of Gomis vs the City defenders for bonuses is quite off in my opinion. The way Gomis went through the early games, he didnt converted the other chances that he got. Merely a goal each time.

Mind you, if Aguero hit form in the earlier games, the City defenders wont have a of chance getting those bonuses.

You're talking like you have to pick one for the entire season. Right now Aguero and Vardy are looking great, Southamptons fixtures are now brilliant and I think Pelle will outscore Mane and Tadic.

So I'm going 3-4-3, four weeks ago none of this was true and I was 3-5-2.

      Adapt.

I have been playing FUT on my Android and am on 4th Division as well, though I did manage to get in Division 2.

Who's your best player and what's your Team Chem? I have the trio of Imbula, Aboubakar and Varela from Porto. Best player has to be Aboubakar and Henderson. Imbula is a beast though

          Hey AK,

I'm playing on XB1 at the moment. I'm running two main teams:

          La Liga - http://www.futhead.com/16/squads/2315200/

          BPL - http://www.futhead.com/16/squads/2315221/

I have Sanchez but not used him yet - just flipping him on the transfer market to make some money currently. Soon I'll have enough for Sturridge and Sanchez so I'll probably switch to 3-5-2 in the BPL as well and play with Sturridge/Benteke up front.

Everton, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea have some good fixtures from GW11.

Norwich, Bournemouth and Sunderland have some tough ones. Manchester United go in with a difficult period too. 4 away fixtures in the next 6 from GW11. Although most of them are against sides in the lower half of the table.

Please ignore the rash comments above. 🙂

I'm getting worried now about international injuries, already on a -4 from Gomis + Westwood to Mane and Ighalo, maybe should have waited instead of jumping in for price rises..

Coutinho looking a doubt, then I'm sure some more will get crocked at the weekend!

    Butland (McCarthy)
    Kolorov - Zouma - Dawson
    Mane - Sanchez - Mahrez - Payet - Coutinho

    (Ighalo - Williams - Richards)
