Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 8

Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini confirm that Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero were withdrawn for precautionary reasons ahead of the upcoming internationals. West Brom have worries in defence, whilst Liverpool’s playmaker pulls out of the Brazil squad due to injury earlier today. Here’s our round up of the weekend injury news…

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez came off after 81 minutes against Manchester United in visible discomfort, though Arsene Wenger was quick to allay fears over any injury, confirming that the wide man is set to feature for Chile in the upcoming internationals:

“He has a little groin problem. Unfortunately he goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile and he loves so much to play for his country and he will play against Brazil [on Friday] and Peru [next] Tuesday so the game at home against Brazil he will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back in good shape.”

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark sat out the Villains’ 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City after picking up a thigh strain, Tim Sherwood has confirmed.

Chelsea
Goalscorer Willian was replaced by Loic Remy at the 64-minute mark of Chelsea’s home clash against Southampton, with Jose Mourinho later explaining that he took counsel with the club doctor after the Brazilian became ill during the break:

“When the fans boo the Willian decision, I would do that too if I didn’t know he was vomiting at half-time and the doctor said it would be hard for him to carry on.”

Leicester City
Jamie Vardy received a heavy blow to the knee in the first half of Leicester’s trip to Norwich City but was able to carry on and complete the match. Claudio Ranieri sought to allay fears over the form striker’s fitness, insisting that Vardy sustained no serious damage from the collision:

“No, nothing serious. When I saw Vardy on the ground I thought it was a bad injury because Jamie never stays down. When he came close to our bench, the physio said it was his knee, but he was stable and he continued to play.”

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho has withdrawn from Brazil’s squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, with Liverpool’s official site offering no details on the nature of his injury.

Danny Ings confirmed he sustained a minor injury during the Merseyside derby but expects to be fit for upcoming England duties:

”I struggled through the game – I just got my ankle caught in Phil Jagielka’s legs. As the game went on I felt that I couldn’t move as much. It will be assessed but should be fine.”

Manchester City
Following his five-goal frenzy, Sergio Aguero was substituted after 66 minutes at the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini said that the Argentine marksman received treatment at half time after taking kicks to his back and hamstring in the first period, so the Sky Blues boss elected to exercise caution and manage Aguero’s minutes:

“He had treatment at half time, and to give him more minutes he could have scored but we must be cautious about his fitness, because he could be injured. Last season Kun finished the season without any problem. He is doing a different preparation, so I’m not worried about injuries, you can be injured by kicks of course but muscle injuries he should not have any more.”

Newcastle United
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu picked up a hamstring complaint in the process of trying to prevent Aguero scoring his third goal of an eventual 6-1 thrashing. The Switzerland U19 international is now set to undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Norwich City
Lewis Grabban rolled his ankle during training last week so was ruled out of the Foxes clash, but Alex Neil expects him to be sidelined for longer than a week.

Stoke City
Marko Arnautovic was subbed off 21 minutes from time after scoring the only goal during the Potters’ visit to Villa Park. Mark Hughes played down the reason for the winger’s withdrawal:

“He just cramped up in his back which needed unlocking.”

Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf was stretchered off in the second half after damaging his hip. Hughes admitted that the striker is unlikely to team up with Senegal during the international break.

“He’s been in a bit of pain. He’s got an issue with his hip and hopefully hasn’t done anything to the capsule in the joint. But he’s struggling to walk and I’d be surprised if he meets up with his international team because he’s in a lot of pain and can’t weight bear.”

Swansea
Kyle Naughton missed yesterday’s home draw with Spurs due to personal reasons, reports in the local press have confirmed.

Watford
Jose Manuel Jurado missed Watford’s trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while Ikechi Anya has been given the go ahead to travel with Scotland despite being subbed off with a leg injury.

West Bromwich Albion
Jonny Evans lasted just 24 minutes at Crystal Palace after picking up a hamstring strain, while James Morrison took a blow to his ankle in the second half. Both players underwent scans to determine the extent of their injuries:

“We’ve got a problem with (James) Morrison – he’s felt his ankle. The home nations, we want to help them as much as we can. Me in particular, if I can. Fingers crossed they’ll be okay. If they’re anywhere near it, we’ll give them a chance to play. It will be all down to the doctor. He’ll scan them tomorrow. The scans now are fantastic so he’ll know whether they’re serious injuries or not.”

Elsewhere in the Baggies camp, Gareth McAuley suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that saw him miss the home clash with Everton last Monday. The defender is expected to recover in time to start for Northern Ireland during their World Cup qualifiers.

Darren Fletcher has trained for Scotland earlier today despite picking up a knock during West Brom’s loss at Palace.

West Ham United
Winston Reid was subbed off after 66 minutes at the Stadium of Light, whilst Victor Moses has withdrawn from international duties with Nigeria, claiming a lack of fitness.

i can see a lot of yo-yo transfers happening between silva and KDB this season. Each will score well every other week.

I've always loved Silva and always owned him when fit. Then KDB came along and he satisfies me more. He doesn't cry off with spurious injuries/excuses not to perform either.

I was stuck at 1.35 million through GW 7 and got to 177k in GW 8.

Jumped more than 1.2 million spots this week, up to 177k. 123 points, no Kun x3. Just got lucky that all my ships came in (for once). Totally lucky week; ie, Bolassie came off the bench for Mahrez.

This is a week where I finally find myself feeling relaxed and in no rush to change things even with a couple of defenders I feel need attention. I sit with KDB, Alexis, Kun, TV at 104m (102.8 selling) and look at all the teams in my mini leagues and they have one of them at most.

They will now all clammer to get them in and destroy their squads to do it. None of them have good TV so will have to fill their boots with fodder I wouldn't touch. Feeling like there has been a seismic shift in the game in the last 2 weeks. Thank you Kun and Alexis for choosing the English Premier League and proving form is temporary, class is permenant.

Thinking of using my AOA Chip next week, assuming Morrison will be ok. Team will be :-

    Butland (Swa)

    Kolarov (BOU), Monreal (Wat)

KDB (BOU), Sanchez (Wat), Payet (Cpl), Mahrez (Sou), Morrison (SUN)

Kun (C) (BOU), Vardy (Sou), Ayoze (NOR)

Bench - Hennessey (WHU), Evans (SUN), Davies (Liv), Francis (Mci)

    Thoughts?

    KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Ayew, Fletcher

    Aguero, Vardy Martial

Would a good player straight swap Ayew for Sanchez or would he tolerate a hit to lose Fletcher & Martial for Sanchez & Igahlo to give him a Magnificent Eight?

    Thanks.

With 8 gameweeks on, things looked to be a bit stable with most teams performing as expected. What would be your ideal team at this point of time keeping in mind a proper budget. Also who do you thing has been a massive disappointment and will come good eventually and one who has been good but will end up in tears.

Hazard will come good. So will the Chelsea defence. I strongly believe that Memphis will score some big points too.

Mahrez will cool off. Also not keen on Ayew long term. Think Payet is the real deal though.

Advice on the following transfers guys:

    A) Muniesa>Billy Jones
    And either
    B) Mata>Walcott/Mane
    Or
    C) Martial>Pelle

Muniesa to Billy Jones (Sunderland). Both 4.4 and I don't have any money in the bank. Sunderland are second in the clean sheet potential over the next 6. Just sacked their manager and surely can't get any worse defensively under the new manager. Whoever it is.

That is going to be my FT because I have kolorov cresswell at the back. Naughton might not play again. Francis has City away.

Then I'm thinking of taking a 4 point hit.

Mata has two tough fixtures and same for martial. I've got Sanchez but I sold all my Southampton before the United fixture.

    1. Larry Legend
      • 9 Years

I'd wait and see what happens before investing in the form worst defence in the league. I would expect Naughton back after the international break. Not really sold on the other transfers either, but I prefer Martial to Pelle if your going to do one.

At the risk of sounding like a moaning premier league manager, this has been a bad start for me with injuries. So far had Shaw, Wilson, Silva, Mertesacker, Diouf, Evans. Add to that some terrible selections I have made with players getting dropped (Gomez, Muniesa, A.Young, Sinclair, Januzaj and now even Mahrez) and it feels like all I'm doing is putting out fires rather than keeping to any plan.

Anyone else feel that this year? Or perhaps it just happens every year, but I always forget it...

You just have to stay on top of it and if you are plagued with injury's and bad picks don't be afraid to take a hit or 2 to get your team back in good shape

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

      1. Larry Legend
        • 9 Years

Already played it to get some of those guys out in week 4. My teams ok at the moment, I'm just a bit annoyed because every planned move is scuppered by injury! But it does feel like injuries have struck since FPL favourites more than usual for just 8 games in!

          • 10 Years

Still stuck with Muniesa, and then the Evans and Diouf doubts, so nothing too serious. But pretty much every transfer so far has been to address an injury or dropping- but I guess that's just the way it goes. As I admit below, some selections have been terrible bordering on madness.

Injurys are just bad luck, nothing you can do about them.
Bringing in Gomez was always going to be a gamble imo, as was Muniesa, Young, Januzaj as neither were 'nailed on' I made that mistake last season and now only select players guaranteed 90 mins every week, though I do currently have Kolarov!

      1. Larry Legend
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

Agreed some of my selections have been diabolical. I made some maverick moves last year and they kept coming off, and i was lucky with injuries. I think the moral of the story is to play a bit more sensibly, and consider taking a hit every now and then to get the team right (I am usually very reluctant).

This is a game where it pays to be bold, I think that selling them is the right move to gain a massive edge on the field with differentials. Mane, Ozil, Walcott, even Cabaye and Barkley may well prove me right.

      That would be bold!

With Mahrez being dropped at the weekend and Vardy playing out of his skin, there may be an argument (however fragile) to take the money and run with him. Payet on the other hand is a season keeper. He's just carrying on where he left off last season in France(wasn't he only preceded by Messi in some key stats?)

It's not just those players you have to worry about getting injured the ones you already own could also get injured

I am thinking of doing Payet to Mané, guys. Am I mad? Would rather ditch Ayew, but would need to take a hit...

This is not the old hammers, it the new attack minded, play out from the back and football themselves to wins Hammers. And Payet is the driving force in that team. He's like a West Ham version of Silva

Agree, are you doubling up in the midfield on Saints and Aresnal?

Personally i have gone Sanchez, Mane, Payet, Maherz (Westwood) across the mids

Richards is playing for me next gw because of Dier banned and Targett 5th defender, Richards is playing chelsea away and Villa don't do clean sheets, worth a hit to bring in a 4.5 with a better fixture and all around better clean sheet prospects for the season ? If so then any recommendations ? All I can see is Nyom but his playing Arsenal or Cameron but he has Swansea away but it is MNF. (0.0itb so can't upgrade Targett) Any other decent 4.5s ?

Dont take a hit on defence. Even if they concede six goals, -1 is better than 2 (-4)

Seeing as I'm playing you gw9 in Graveyard Shift, I think that the clear answer is to take more hits. Piles of them. 😉
But seriously, bringing in a 4.5 for -4 is seldom worth it. Just play Richards.

I might has well tell you the -4 that I took, too.
Gomez and Diouf -> Souare and Pelle.

                                Darmian to Bellerin for me.

Id like to get Bertrand in the week after.

My squad would be looking strong in all areas then, a bit away from my usual cheap at the back.

                                      And a bit differential.

I think one or two good differential defenders could boost the rank as good as any.

I remember a few years back when Ronaldo actually blanked one weekend. It was at the time when he was going absolutely mental week in, week out but that didn't prevent tens of thousands of people discarding him for the following GW! (where he went absolutely mental again).

Just goes to show that you're only as good as your last mistake in many peoples eyes.

Maybe the trick with Mahrez won't be when to jump off but to hang onto him when everyone else has?

For £5.5m budget spend he's frigging gold dust.
