Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 8

Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini confirm that Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero were withdrawn for precautionary reasons ahead of the upcoming internationals. West Brom have worries in defence, whilst Liverpool’s playmaker pulls out of the Brazil squad due to injury earlier today. Here’s our round up of the weekend injury news…

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez came off after 81 minutes against Manchester United in visible discomfort, though Arsene Wenger was quick to allay fears over any injury, confirming that the wide man is set to feature for Chile in the upcoming internationals:

“He has a little groin problem. Unfortunately he goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile and he loves so much to play for his country and he will play against Brazil [on Friday] and Peru [next] Tuesday so the game at home against Brazil he will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back in good shape.”

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark sat out the Villains’ 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City after picking up a thigh strain, Tim Sherwood has confirmed.

Chelsea
Goalscorer Willian was replaced by Loic Remy at the 64-minute mark of Chelsea’s home clash against Southampton, with Jose Mourinho later explaining that he took counsel with the club doctor after the Brazilian became ill during the break:

“When the fans boo the Willian decision, I would do that too if I didn’t know he was vomiting at half-time and the doctor said it would be hard for him to carry on.”

Leicester City
Jamie Vardy received a heavy blow to the knee in the first half of Leicester’s trip to Norwich City but was able to carry on and complete the match. Claudio Ranieri sought to allay fears over the form striker’s fitness, insisting that Vardy sustained no serious damage from the collision:

“No, nothing serious. When I saw Vardy on the ground I thought it was a bad injury because Jamie never stays down. When he came close to our bench, the physio said it was his knee, but he was stable and he continued to play.”

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho has withdrawn from Brazil’s squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, with Liverpool’s official site offering no details on the nature of his injury.

Danny Ings confirmed he sustained a minor injury during the Merseyside derby but expects to be fit for upcoming England duties:

”I struggled through the game – I just got my ankle caught in Phil Jagielka’s legs. As the game went on I felt that I couldn’t move as much. It will be assessed but should be fine.”

Manchester City
Following his five-goal frenzy, Sergio Aguero was substituted after 66 minutes at the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini said that the Argentine marksman received treatment at half time after taking kicks to his back and hamstring in the first period, so the Sky Blues boss elected to exercise caution and manage Aguero’s minutes:

“He had treatment at half time, and to give him more minutes he could have scored but we must be cautious about his fitness, because he could be injured. Last season Kun finished the season without any problem. He is doing a different preparation, so I’m not worried about injuries, you can be injured by kicks of course but muscle injuries he should not have any more.”

Newcastle United
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu picked up a hamstring complaint in the process of trying to prevent Aguero scoring his third goal of an eventual 6-1 thrashing. The Switzerland U19 international is now set to undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Norwich City
Lewis Grabban rolled his ankle during training last week so was ruled out of the Foxes clash, but Alex Neil expects him to be sidelined for longer than a week.

Stoke City
Marko Arnautovic was subbed off 21 minutes from time after scoring the only goal during the Potters’ visit to Villa Park. Mark Hughes played down the reason for the winger’s withdrawal:

“He just cramped up in his back which needed unlocking.”

Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf was stretchered off in the second half after damaging his hip. Hughes admitted that the striker is unlikely to team up with Senegal during the international break.

“He’s been in a bit of pain. He’s got an issue with his hip and hopefully hasn’t done anything to the capsule in the joint. But he’s struggling to walk and I’d be surprised if he meets up with his international team because he’s in a lot of pain and can’t weight bear.”

Swansea
Kyle Naughton missed yesterday’s home draw with Spurs due to personal reasons, reports in the local press have confirmed.

Watford
Jose Manuel Jurado missed Watford’s trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while Ikechi Anya has been given the go ahead to travel with Scotland despite being subbed off with a leg injury.

West Bromwich Albion
Jonny Evans lasted just 24 minutes at Crystal Palace after picking up a hamstring strain, while James Morrison took a blow to his ankle in the second half. Both players underwent scans to determine the extent of their injuries:

“We’ve got a problem with (James) Morrison – he’s felt his ankle. The home nations, we want to help them as much as we can. Me in particular, if I can. Fingers crossed they’ll be okay. If they’re anywhere near it, we’ll give them a chance to play. It will be all down to the doctor. He’ll scan them tomorrow. The scans now are fantastic so he’ll know whether they’re serious injuries or not.”

Elsewhere in the Baggies camp, Gareth McAuley suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that saw him miss the home clash with Everton last Monday. The defender is expected to recover in time to start for Northern Ireland during their World Cup qualifiers.

Darren Fletcher has trained for Scotland earlier today despite picking up a knock during West Brom’s loss at Palace.

West Ham United
Winston Reid was subbed off after 66 minutes at the Stadium of Light, whilst Victor Moses has withdrawn from international duties with Nigeria, claiming a lack of fitness.

    WC lesson #1

Don't be an eager beaver when you hit the WC. Double check the current price of a player before you sell them.

Here's me thinking I could sell Bellerin because I still thought he was still 5.5, unfortunately for me he was actually 5.6 and obviously that wasn't reflected in his sale price. Now he'll likely rise to 5.7 and I just lost myself 0.1 profit. Annoying.

Yeah it's annoying. Things like that bound to happen though with such unpredictable volatility. Don't beat yourself up over it. Maybe he won't even double rise.

Its not that, he only needs to rise once for me to get the profit. He was 5.6 last week.

I actually use my Watchlist to regularly update and show specifically which of my current players will lose 0.1m in sell value if they drop once in current price. easier to check than scanning a list of numbers.

My family actually got into British basketball when Everton invested in the team which became the Everton Tigers. That led to attending regular games. Eventually we started to watch Manchester Giants. My folks have season tickets and I go when I can.

It's a great game, especially exciting if it's close in the final quarter. It's a family orientated, friendly atmosphere, and the players meet the fans after every game. So unlike football in many ways.

We have season tickets for Everton too.

Don't really like Everton defenders after watching the Merseyside derby, and they are more expensive then WBA's defenders, those cheaper one like Galloway is not nailed. I'd rather get Janmaat if Newcastle play well next game.

Depends on how badly you want to save your WC. That defense is dire though if Kompany and Kos are still going to be out with nothing in the bank...no great replacement for Gomez....and Prodl due a 1 pointer at best could be ugly this GW.

Not a lot of love on here for Gomis at the moment, sure his and Swans form has been poor over the last 4 but who would back against him returning to form with STO and Avl in next 2?

He could do, but he's just badly out of form. Would rather have Vardy than him, though. By a distance.

    Wildcard draft #1

    Howard Hennessey
    Gabriel Evans Davies Souare Nyom
    Sanchez KDB Mane Mahrez Hoolahan
    Aguero Pelle Vardy

    Bank: 0.5

Other players I'm considering: Myhill, minor defensive upgrades, Moses, Payet, Walcott, Lukaku, Ighalo (352)

Would appreciate your guys thoughts. I know I'll get criticism for the defence, it is a little punty.

        Dawson in for evans
Cech in goal, safer bet into Arsenal
        Cabaye instead of Mahrez

Not keen on Cech in goal, would rather have Bellerin for a similar price. Cabaye doesn't excite me as much as Mahrez either. I don't think there is much in it between Dawson and Evans. My budget is tight and the 0.2 could be handy elsewhere (eg Moses over Hoolahan).

Evans is not worth having due to his injury record.

Arsenal fixture list is so jammed up, Bellerin will miss the odd game, Cech will start every single league game.

Mahrez' star has faded. Doesn't have to be Cabaye, pick a different player.

I think its premature to say his star has faded. I got him for 5.6 and I might be willing to sell in a few weeks for an Everton mid (fixtures). By then I might have the cash to get someone like Barkley.

I'm going for that myself with a Kolarov -> Jagielka transfer. Think Myhill is safe until Foster is back or he makes a few howlers. No threat from Lindegaard, imo. Pulis made of couple of comments saying he was pleased Lindegaard played a game for the first time in ages. He ain't one to take a risk.

      Hi there 🙂

That defense...oh dear. I'll take the bait. Gabriel possibly on borrowed time....Davies I still don't trust with Rose lurking...Evans needs to be more of a 4th or 5th defender for me since he gets hurt for fun - get Dawson if you are going with two cheapies behind him. Souare and Nyom are fine, but seems too lightweight to me.

Attack looks amazing, though! I'd seriously consider no Mahrez if on WC. Hoolahan downgrade an obvious place for a small releasing of funds. I went Wanyama and feel great about it.

Agree with all of your points. We seem to be the only two advocates for selling Mahrez.

Hoolahan isn't the only capable cheap midfielder, find somebody in the 4.5 range that is nailed.

Hoolahan is 33 years old, he won't last all season.

Who is out there at 4.5 though? they all seem terrible. I'd sooner have Moses in my team.

Why is Gabriel on borrowed time? he's got a clean sheet every game he's started in and has ahead of Mertesacker in the pecking order before the red card.

At least Davies is only 4.5 so worth the risk perhaps?

Evans is another risk regarding injures yes but I don't like to plan for injuries. With less games I like to think he won't be too problematic. If I have the cash I may yet go for Dawson however, it will depend how much budget I end up with and how many other risks I have in the team (eg Davies)

Yep, its tempting to upgrade one to a 5m from somewhere and carry the risk burden of Evans and Davies

I bought Mahrez for 5.6 and I don't like the alternatives in that price bracket. I like having a half decent 5th mid, its one of my FPL philosophies.

I just don't trust Gabriel. I'd always be scared that he will get benched for Kos and Mert when/if they are both fit. Just would be nervous about it...Wenger is confusing with his team selections sometimes for me. I'd rather find .5 for Toby and be assured of start. You don't have to plan for injuries re: Evans. He's injured right now 🙂 Cheers re: decent 5th mid can't fault it more than one way to play the game!

Could all come off, for sure, just yeah that's all I was trying to get at. I'm a big proponent on a sound and solid defense 1-5 on WC. When that safety net is gone and you are stuck with the squad until winter WC I think it's very important.

Evans is injury prone, and both Davies and Gabriel are rotation risk, you might end up with only 2 playing defenders. May be downgrade Hoolahan and upgrade the defence.

          But is he really "strong"?

Old, not nailed, subbed off early.

You will only need him to come on when your player is injured/doesn't play and the chances he will get 2 points are more likely than a 7 pointer or higher (He will probably get more then 2 points when you leave him on the bench), imagine what you can do with and extra million itb.

    Aguero. Vardy

    McCarthy. Souare. Richards. Wilson

Don't let sunk value hold you hostage if you think a player is no longer a good pick. Wilson needs to go, but I guess in 352 it's not terribly pressing. Gomes as a start every week doesn't seem ideal but not the worst thing.

I was considering selling Martial for Pelle... then I looked at United's fixtures: After everton and City there is a fine fine run up until GW 18 where they play Chelsea (assuming Chelsea sort their woes out by then). It roughens up a bit after that with some hard fixtures in there too but up until then there should be plenty of goals!

Janmaat has big potential with his fixtures ahead, but he is also the most risky option with Newcastle defensive form now. Bellerin is a good choice, fixtures also good but not as juicy as Newcastle. I'd get Janmaat as my 3rd/4th defensive rotation, or Bellerin to replace Kolarov/Kompany and start every single game, and I don't see Bertrand can keep any CS the next 2 GWs. It depends what you need.

I think a defender pick always has to be based on underlying CS potential.

Of these 3, Janmaat has none. Between Bellerin & Bertrand for me PPU. Just because of the home fixtures alone, Bertrand.

I would recommend having a closer look at the chances conceded by those defences right hand side.

      1. dmhomag
        • 9 Years

Actually CS potential is fixture driven and on that basis Janmaat has great potential given the fantastic fixtures ahead.

I reckon there is a more than chance that Mahrez will be dropped for the same tactical reasons that he was dropped in the Norwich game and also that Aguero might get a rest after returning from international duty

The captaincy pick might not be automatically on Aguero for me over this and Mahrez might be shown to the bench

Probably not, people are less likely to respond if they have a lower sale value. I wilcarded GW3 and have paid price rises/falls a fair bit of attention when deciding transfers; I have an SV of 102.6 now as a result. So a 101.3 with a wildcard still intact seems pretty reasonable to me (it compares favorably with the non-WCers in my mini-leages, too).

To get a rough idea, 10 people in the top 50 of the LMS league haven't played their wildcard, they average ~102.7 TV, so probably in the region of 101.5 SV. And that's the top 50 of course, so they're likely a bit ahead of the average SV since players earning points rise in value.

Teams nice. Personally not a fan of berahino though. Wba don't score enough goals. I'd much prefer vary.

Fancy Berahino to do well despite WBA being lacklustre in attack. But we'll see.

Don't take a hit, but get rid of Lovren when you can. Even when he gets better, he's behind Sakho, and maybe even Gomez for CB.

Yeah I know. Got him on WC back when he was starting. Then he got injured. Janmaat/Cedric potential replacement.

Think I'm gonna do Damian to janmaat. With those fixtures and his attacking threat, has the potential to be a great pick.

Exciting punt. I'd go for it.

Nice, I didn't realise it was so low. Some serious under the radar stuff.

Could work out assuming you have other solid defenders. Newcastle have to start winning matches

No doubt they are in trouble. However I would back them to get something from the upcoming run of games. The opponents have been hard so far. They've done ok on occasion. Against che, Man U and arsenal they put in a good performance.

Newcastle have to stop conceding in order to make me pick Janmaat.

Darmian to Bertrand next week a good transfer or stick?

It's a good trade, barring injuries over the break. Damian gets so many cards.

Surely Bellerin is the better pick?

In a draft league where Lens is considered a forward, would you have:

    Lens
    Ighalo
    Borini
    Ayoze

I have Ighalo, but Sunderland and Newcastle, while terrible, have the fixtures, and a new manager (Sun) may reinvigorate.

I have Ifhalo, but fixtures are taking a turn for the worse.

Tough to pick between Lens and Ighalo. If there are bonus points available like FPL Ighalo, else Lens. Lens is just allergic to BPS points in FPL.

No BPS. I think Lens is better. Always tricky with a new manager. Thanks for the answer.

In FPL, though, Lens gets the extra point for the goal, so there's always that.
