Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Janmaat Concern for Magpies

Daryl Janmaat withdraws from Holland duties due to a knee complaint. John Stones is ruled out of England’s qualifiers, whilst Wayne Rooney is a doubt. Gareth McAuley is available for Northern Ireland, whilst Switzerland are optimistic on Xherdan Shaqiri’s chances of recovering from a thigh problem.

Janmaat withdraws from Holland Duties

Daryl Janmaat has been ruled out of the Netherlands squad ahead of their Euro qualifiers due to stiffness in his knee. Newcastle have since released a statement confirming they are optimistic that the right-back will be fit to face Norwich City at home next Gameweek.

The Scout Says: In spite of the fact that Newcastle United have claimed just one clean sheet this term and shipped 10 goals in their previous quartet of match-ups, Janmaat remains on our radar because of his supreme underlying statistics. Only Aleksandar Kolarov (one every 62.1 minutes) boasts a better shot frequency than Janmaat (68.1 minutes) among those defenders who’ve made at least four appearances. Furthermore, the marauding Dutchman has amassed two more shots on target (six) than any defender. Considering that the Magpies now enjoy an excellent batch of fixtures through to Gameweek 15 (NOW, sun, STO, bou, LEI, cry), Janmaat could serve as an excellent differential if passed fit for the Canaries clash.

Stones Ruled Out for Three Lions

John Stones – who’s carrying a minor knee injury – will play no part in England’s final pair of Euro 2016 qualifiers after being ruled out yesterday afternoon.

The Scout Says: With Seamus Coleman nearing a return and Leighton Baines closing in on a return, Everton’s defence is slowly getting back to full strength. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Stones recovers swiftly as the Toffees gear up for an exceptional run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 (SUN, whu, AVL, bou, CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO). For now, Phil Jagielka (5.4) presents the safest route into their rearguard, while Tim Howard (5.1) – who’s ten points clear of any Everton defenders by virtue of eight save points and four bonus points – should pique the interest of anyone scouring the market for a shot-stopper. Ultimately, the fact that the Merseysiders conceded an average of one goal per match through the opening eight Gameweeks – despite facing off against six of last term’s top eight outfits – bodes well for their clean-sheet prospects over a kinder stretch.

Rooney Worry for Hodgson

Wayne Rooney, Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey all missed training for England yesterday, with the United skipper rated a doubt for Friday’s clash with Estonia after picking up a knock against Arsenal.

The Scout Says: With England already through to Euro 2016, it seems unlikely that Rooney will be risked for the Three Lions. The United skipper’s record-breaking displays on the international front have masked his domestic toils, which have seen him score just once in the league this term. The arrival of Anthony Martial has forced Rooney into a central support role at United, and although their fixtures take a turn for the better in Gameweek 11, Martial and Juan Mata – who has scored or assisted in five of the last seven – look the likeliest routes into Louis van Gaal’s attack.

McAuley Fit for Northern Ireland

Gareth McAuley has been given the go-ahead to play for Northern Ireland during the international break – the defender has been passed fit after suffering a recurrence of a calf complaint against Crystal Palace last weekend. Meanwhile, Baggies team-mate Jonny Evans is still touch-and-go for his nation’s crunch tie against Greece on Thursday.

The Scout Says: Although West Brom’s flawless road record came to an end at the hands of the Eagles, the West Midlanders remain a fine source of mid-priced defensive assets in light of Tony Pulis’ resilient brand of football. Craig Dawson remains the prime pick among the back four owing to his security of starts and fitness, while Boaz Myhill ranks second in the keeper rankings for total score (41). Both will continue to be in high demand as they embark on a favourable trio of match-ups (SUN, nor, LEI). The trip to Carrow Road is arguably the sternest test on paper, yet investors in West Brom’s rearguard will be emboldened by the fact that only Southampton (21) have conceded fewer shots inside the box in away matches than the Baggies (22).

Swiss Optimistic on Shaqiri

Having sat out Stoke City’s 1-0 road win over Aston Villa due to a thigh strain, Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to be passed fit for Switzerland’s Euro qualifiers, according to head coach Vladimir Petkovic:

“I have no doubt about the condition of Shaqiri. He will play on Friday (against San Marino).”

The Scout Says: Priced at 6.8 in the wake of a 0.2 depreciation, Shaqiri has failed to establish himself as contender in the mid-priced midfielder bracket. Turning out for a Stoke outfit that’s tallied just eight goals in as many matches, the former Bayern Munich recruit lays claim to a solitary assist across 407 minutes. Moreover, his underlying statistics don’t particularly portend imminent attacking returns, with just two shots on target and seven key passes arriving this campaign. Those managers yearning for Potters coverage ahead of a decent trio of encounters (swa, WAT, new) might consider the 6.0-priced Marko Arnautovic, who – apart from notching two goals and assists – places top among Stoke’s midfielders for attempts (11), shots on target (four) and key passes (nine).

the stoke defence this season is singing the same tune as last season's.

Look relatively tight, but constantly concedes a couple of big chances each game where their opponents score.

Personally I think Mert and Kos are the better pairing as they compliment each other very well, but I cannot see him playing 100% of the PL games. I'm not saying I am right, I am saying there is definite risk involved and that until all 3 are fully fit no one knows who is nailed of the three.

In my opinion Gabriel is fine, I think Wenger prefers him over Mertesacker and I get that feeling from a few Arsenal fans as well.

Davies has played 7 out of 8 games. He is a slight risk but probably worth it and there are players I can get him out for.

Butland will improve with ShawX back I think

I would prefer Souare over Ward (for the budget price), Saints and Everton Defense over Gabriel and Davies. Dont really like Drinkwater pick imo, but if you want to play 3-4-3 it not a big problem tho (maybe).

Front 8 (minus Drinkwater) seems nice.

      Cheers mate

Bavies (remember when he was 4m!), Hangeland, Gabriel

First choice team links to relatively promising defences, but lacking the attacking threat and security of options slightly more priced (although Hangeland, along with Huth, 10/11 was a monster).

In theory, you could load up on their value and have 2 auto subs at the ready (they don't look cameo prone).

For those with their WCs intact, will you be looking to use it around GW13 when fixtures turn (and when your team might be in decent condition, but would allow you to jump on Everton, Chelsea and others with good fixtures) or will you continue to hold out until you believe you actually need it (when you have 3-4 injuries).

I'm leaning towards the former, including building a strong bench for Christmas rotation. Thoughts?

Yeah I haven't considered that either. Although FPL is a weird game, my team is in decent knick at the moment so only 3-4 injuries will force my hand.

What teams are you planning to load up on?

I don't have a Wildcard in tact, still I'd give my 2 cents over it.

I have been in this boat for a few times already in my FPL History, I like to take advantage of such Fixture turns, but I only do it if I think there are at least 5-6 players in my team that I don't fancy THAT much over those that have some really tasty fixtures coming in and are around the same price range of those 5-6 players mentioned. It has served me well till now as it gives me a chance to be one or two transfers ahead of the pack.

Cheers AK, well said. I agree, however I have to say that if I don't use it in GW13, it will always be in the back of my mind to play it and there may not be a more suitable time to play it before we get to GW18 and beyond. It would suck to have to use it just to get it out of the way, if that makes sense.

        1. AK ⭐
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

Yeah I get your point. You have to use your Wildcard before GW19 anyway, so this block of Fixture Turn is probably the best time to use your first wildcard, now anything an happen in the future and you might struggle with a few injuries at around GW15-17, but if you don't, you'll only feel like you just used it for the heck of using it before GW19.

In my opinion, the new Wildcard rules actually give you a bit of a freedom to play it when you fancy it over the time when you would need it. If you see where I am coming from.

Yeah fair point mate. I agree. But from memory (I planned good times to use the WC back in pre-season). There were many teams that have a fixture shift in/around GW13 that can be taken advantage of, aswell as having the opportunity to build a better bench for Christmas rotation.

I'm scared of getting to GW18 having not used my WC (if I hadn't needed to use it) and using it for the sake of it.

They were just examples mate. But there are other sides that have fixture turns then, for example Leicester embark on a poor run of fixtures, and I currently have Vardy and Mahrez.

But I think Everton could be great value this season, particularly defensively, they have shown signs of improvement this season and are doing well despite their tough start.

We all know the story with Chelsea but it's a matter of time before they start to turn the corner, and I can't see them dropping too many points with those fixtures

See above. I'm doing the same. Plus he's a rotation risk. But in going for arsenal defender over Southampton

Wouldnt sell Kolarov before BOU game at home tbh. My plan is to get rid in GW11 If i manage to save a FT next GW 😀

Hmm he enables the Gomis to Pelle switch. I would prefer bellerin but 0.3m short :'(

To the whole lotta people jumping onto the Gabriel bus, be sure you have a 4th nailed on defender just in case.

A WC Dilemma, input much appreciated:

    Cedric or other 5.0
    a) Gosling or Wanyama
    Pelle + 0,4

    Soares or other 4.5
    b) Mane
    Ighalo

A gives more room for easy manouver, ie Pelle to Lukaku, Mane or Payet to Barkley/Cabaye etc etc. Good options in defence.
B gives a stronger front 8, more potential points. More benching headaches..

Which would you prefer for a WC?

On a wildcard. I'd try get Pelle. Luk. Kun. Mane. Payet. Sanchez. IN

cheers. So you prefer a) rather than B then?

Lukaku, Pelle & Kun to much money up front imo, If I want KDB in midfield, the rest would be week.

        Basically this.

Cabaye is a class about the rest of their lot. Bolasie is - in my opinion, clearly - the most overrated player in the league.

I'd gladly have either of Cabaye or Bolasie....Cabaye for pts but Bolasie is great to watch.

I feel like I want to upgrade Mata to KDB. first of all I guess I should figure out if its a good idea, after that I need to find the money lol.

Is it just me, or should We all be trying to get all of these guys in?

    Sanchez, KDB, Aguero

I feel like the best team for the next few weeks has these three in it....?

I had a great week, jumping to the top of my mini league, and I was pretty much the only one with Sanchez. now my rival got Sanchez in (he told me) and he has KDB, I dont wanna lag behind. KDB or stick with Mata differential?

I have all three but gutted I can't squeeze Mata in. "You can't have 'em all" etc. I reckon I'll be transferring KDB to Mata around gameweek 11, so I'd be holding if I were you.

Most right now would probably say no as pace is not a huge factor anymore and gameplay is slightly slower. I think it is personally but referee decisions are absolutely woeful

What is the easiest way to find out how many points you need to get in top 1k, 10k, 100K, etc?
    Is it Gargatron?
    Cheers
