Captain Sensible – Gameweek 13

Our sixth members’ article of the international break sees us turn our attentions to the main captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With a 34% share of the vote, Romelu Lukaku is the stand-out captaincy pick ahead of Everton’s home tie against Aston Villa. Profiting from their agreeable schedule, the 8.6-priced Belgian notched two goals and as many assists in the last two Gameweeks, elevating him to joint-second (seven goals) in the league-wide scoring charts. The fact that Villa shipped 13 goals in their previous five road clashes provides further incentive to hand Lukaku the armband.

Jamie Vardy (14%) can equal a Premier League record when Leicester City make the trip to Newcastle, as he attempts to net for the tenth successive start. Whilst there’s no disputing Vardy’s points potential, there are still major doubts over his availability, with Claudio Ranieri remaining uncertain over his star striker’s fitness in yesterday’s press conference. Staying within the Leicester camp, Riyad Mahrez claims a surprisingly low 3% backing for the St James’ Park clash.

Dispelling his slow start to the campaign, Harry Kane (9%) boasts five goals in his last three starts. Spurs’ premier frontman has developed a knack for scoring in derbies, so he’ll fancy his chances at home to a West Ham United rearguard that’s failed to register a shut-out in their previous seven match-ups.

Alexis Sanchez lies just outside the top three with a 6% backing. The Fantasy Premier League’s most expensive (11.6) midfielder has drawn three consecutive blanks but will be encouraged by the fact that West Bromwich Albion rank top for goals conceded at home (12). Mesut Ozil (4%) scoops a more modest share of the vote, despite chalking up eight assists in his previous six starts.

Despite doubts over his minutes, Sergio Aguero has been backed by 4% of voters for City’s clash with Liverpool tomorrow evening. With just one assist to his name in three outings, Kevin De Bruyne (2%) narrowly sneaks into the top 10.

Eden Hazard and Odion Ighalo (2%) matched each other stride for stride in our Captain Poll. The former has no form to speak of (one goal and two assists across 11 starts) but could punish a Norwich City defence that’s failed to keep a clean sheet on their travels. Meanwhile, the latter has been directly involved (five goals and two assists) in all of Watford’s last seven goals, underlining his value as a budget forward.

    Should I go for
    Payet + Pelle + def (Bertrand/Kolarov/Rojo) -> Ozil + Lukaku/Kane + cheaper def - 4?

Or just stick to Payet -> Ozil and save the transfer for next week? Also have Vardy, but benching if necessary shouldn't be a massive issue...

Lads, I have 2 FT, £0.5 ITB and still have my WC.

Shall I use my 2 FT to replace Payet and upgrade my defence then WC for Aguero next week or save WC, just do 1 XFR this week and use 2 FT next week to get Aguero in for no hit?

Leaning towards saving WC and doing Eriksen and Pellé to Alli and Kun next week.

    Butland Ruddy

    Bellerin Moreno Janmaat Francis Richards

    Sanchez KDB Mane Mahrez Drinkwater

    Pelle Lukaku Vardy

    0 FT, 4.8 ITB

I don't have exact idea what to do with this team. Already done Payet to Drinkwater to avoid price drop, to cash in and abandon front 8 concept. Now I'm not sure what exactly to do. Maybe to get a good defender for -4, but that means to take another hit next to week if I want to bring Aguero.

Thank you. Tried to insert some nice one week punts that could give me the lead I'd need to win the whole thing.

I didn't want a safe "this gives me a good chance to scrape a win this week" team, but a team that has a chance to score a good differential but might result in me losing.

              Time will tell...

But if early planning I know, but need some advice if possible...

      Sanchez, Ozil, Mahrez, Eriksen, KDB
      Vardy, Lukaku, Ighalo

      A) Ighalo & KDB -> Aguero & Alli
      B) Vardy & Eriksen -> Aguero & Alli (which allows Eriksen -> Silva the following week)

I know B won't be popular with the Vardy omission but it's a genuine option.

        Jesse Lingard

Sat at £4.5m and having had an England call up this week, is it a good time to bring in Jesse Lingard as a 5th midfielder?

I see alot of people picking £4.5m and below 5th mids on the guarantee of 2/3 pts. Lingard may not be that consistent but surely has explosive potential for double figure hauls?

        Some good fixtures too.

If I knew he'd be going up in price this evening I'd lock it in now. There's still an element of doubt about him though. Would love to hear peoples thoughts?

I don't see him playing regularly enough to warrant that 5th spot, generally people pick a 5th midfielder who is guaranteed to play every week, but doesn't do anything special which might cause you a selection headache.

so many of the arguments seem to focus on aguero's poor start or his 5 goals. both of those things were freak events at opposite ends of the spectrum. he's not 13mil because he normally goes on droughts. similarly he's 'only' 13mil because even the top striker in the league (you could arguably reduce everything down to those last 6 words) doesn't score hattricks more than 2 or 3 times a season, let alone 25 pointers

No. Most people will use it in a DGW. So 16 points is equal to all 4 of your subs blanking twice.

if you are playing it on a DGW you want more than that

Id be happy with 16pts when I use it. Just waiting for a gameweek with no flags and good fixtures.

Exactly. Healthy squad, good fixtures - that's all you're looking for I'd say.

I'd be content with that, yes. I already played mine for 21pts - which I was very happy with!

I think people are overestimating its worth in a DGW. You aren't going to have 15 DGWers (nor should you want that many).

            Why?

I find myself with this lot and no idea what to do:

        Butland
Van Dijk / Bellerin / Ward
        Sanchez / KDB / Mane / Mahrez
        Lukaku / Kane (C) / Vardy
Subs: Ruddy / Dawson / Richards / Westwood
        2.4M ITB, 1FT

Are any of these moves worth it?

        A) Mane > Ozil
        B) KDB > Bolassie (to fund Kun war chest)
        C) Save

        Cheers

Kolarov to Bellerin or save FT? Have a feeling Clichy will steal some starts in the very near future

I'm likely trading for Dann. I guess it will be hard to predict when the rotation will happen thought Clichy is likely to get midweek games perhaps to get match sharp. They can ease him in now that CL qualifying is fairly sorted..

        Myhill / McCarthy
Bellerin, van Dijk, Janmaat / Nyom, Muniesa
Sanchez, de Bruyne, Mane, Mahrez / Gosling
        Pelle, Vardy, Ighalo

        1 FT, 8.3 ITB

        A) Save FT
        B) Pelle/Ighalo ---> Lukaku
        C) Pelle + Ighalo ---> Lukaku + Kane -4

Not sure on selling Ighalo, he has nice fixtures from GW14 to GW16 but then he has to go surely.
Also selling Pelle could backfire but I definitely don't want him and Mane v City next week.
Muniesa needs to go too, I can't stand him in my team for much longer.

I'm still looking for votes on this. Had about 5 responses so far, and I'll post the averages if I get enough.

How many 60 minutes appearances will the ManU defenders make between GW14 and GW20 (so out of 7 GWs total)?
        A. Smalling
        B. Darmian
        C. Rojo

          Hard to say really.

          In terms of nailed-on-ness...

          Smalling(100% nailed on)
Rojo(seems to be nailed on but hard to tell, a bit of a rocky relationship with LvG, back a bit later this week due to World Cup qualifiers in South America so a bit risky this week)
Darmian(Should start at right-back most weeks now that Tony is out but Jones may see some useage at RB)
Jones(avoid like the plague, not nailed on due to Blind and injury prone)

            Smalling 7
Rojo 6/7 depending on this weekend
            Darmian 6
            Jones 3/4

I'm getting a lot of positive feedback on Rojo. I may go for him on WC to try and save a bit of cash. I should have enough depth in my defence to cover any missing games.

        Who to bench from?

        KDB, Sanchez, Mahrez, Willian, Barkley
        Lukaku, Pelle, Vardy

        Currently thinking Barkley..?

        BUTTERS_LFC9
        Current team is
        DDG-Rudd
        Bellerin-Cedric-Dawson-Huth-Saylor
        Sanchez-KDB-Mahrez-Ayew-Fletcher
        Pelle-Lukaku- Vardy
        4.1 ITB ,1FT

Can either do Sanchez and Pelle > Ozil and Aguero or wildcard to something similar to this:
        DDG-4.0
        Bellerin-Moreno-VVD-Dier-S.Taylor
        Ozil-Silva-Mane-Mahrez-Fletcher
        Vardy-Aguero-Lukaku
        0.0ITB

Which would you guys do? Sorry for long post?
