Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 16

Our Tightrope walkers were on their best behaviour over the weekend, with no new suspensions to report on so far in Gameweek 16. Indeed, the last 19 Premier League matches have failed to see anyone topple off, after last week also passed without incident.

There are now 23 players sitting just a single booking short of a one-match ban. Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures produced just two new entries – Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was cautioned for a tackle on Watford midfielder Ben Watson during the Black Cats’ 1-0 home loss yesterday. Newcastle’s match-winner Ayoze Perez also accrued his fourth booking of the season after a late challenge on Jan Vertonghen in this afternoon’s 2-1 victory at the Lane.

Steve McClaren’s men now supply the Tightrope with three players – more than any other side – as Perez joins Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tiote on the naughty step.

There’s still time for a couple of protagonists to topple, though. Leicester’s Robert Huth and Chelsea’s Diego Costa are the men in question ahead of tomorrow evening’s match at the King Power, though the latter’s chances of taking part remain in question, bearing in mind that he’s failed to start the previous two matches.

With three more Gameweeks still to navigate until the limit is increased from five cautions to ten on New Year’s Day, there are, in theory, as many as 144 players still at risk of the Tightrope. West Brom are the club most affected, as they have ten players with at least two yellows to their name. Liverpool and United, meanwhile, have just four players in a similar situation.

Cautions for Tom Carroll and Danny Rose means that Tottenham remain at the summit for yellow cards accrued – Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been booked a total of 37 times in top-flight fixtures. West Brom (34), Liverpool (33), Newcastle (32) and Sunderland (31) are the next culpable, though in contrast, Arsenal have been the best behaved, with just 16 league bookings.

In terms of overall yellows, Stoke’s Erik Pieters and Newcastle’s Jack Colback now joined Norwich midfielder Alex Tettey at the summit with seven yellows apiece. Colback has now extended his record as the most booked player since the start of last season – he leads second-placed Lee Cattermole by 19 cautions to 17. That trio could yet fall foul of the ten card-limit in the current calendar year, then, should they be booked in their trio of remaining 2015 fixtures.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp has defended the tackle by Craig Gardner that led to Dejan Lovren being stretchered off with a knee problem at Anfield:

“He played the ball, a millisecond before he hit Dejan. It was like the whole game: on the edge of everything. But he played the ball.”

Tony Pulis, meanwhile, went on the offensive and claimed the hosts were far more culpable:

“The two worst challenges in the game are James Milner’s challenge on Gardner and Martin Skrtel’s challenge on Salomon Rondon. Gardner has played the ball. Skrtel has gone right over the ball.”

Man United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only player currently unavailable due to suspension. The midfielder was retrospectively slapped with a three-match ban in midweek following an elbowing incident involving West Ham’s Winston Reid in the Gameweek 15 goalless draw at Old Trafford. Having sat out yesterday’s loss to Bournemouth, Schweinsteiger will also miss the upcoming league encounters with Norwich and Stoke.

Gomis has nice upcoming fixtures, and that goal should give him a starting place. Plus new manager may give club a lift. Rondon in a team where CBs are more likely to score than strikers, and Wickham is wank.

Outcomes of the Scoutcast clean sheet predictions and desert island risks:

    Clean Sheets
    -----------------------
Granville: West Ham at home to Stoke (clean sheet)
Mark: Liverpool at home to WBA (conceded 2)
Jonty: Tottenham at home to Newcastle (conceded 2)
Andy85WSM: Crystal Palace at home to Southampton (clean sheet)

Congratulations to Granville (again) and Andy. 2 weeks in a row Granville has nailed his clean sheet prediction.

    Risks
    -----------
    Granville - Jordan Ayew (2)
    Jonty - Kone (2)
    Andy85WSM - Wickham (2)
Mark - didn't actually give a clear choice but mentioned van Aanholt (2), Watmore (2) and Bolasie (6)

A victory for ignoring the rules and just naming lots of players then 🙂

I'm interested to know which one was left that Jonty thought I was going to go for, I'll assume it wasn't Palace. Perhaps Man City? But City without Kompany are a bit rubbish for clean sheets.

Fun fact: Deulofeu has still only had two shots on goal this season. One in the last six weeks.

But he very obviously has a real understanding with Lukaku and an assist every other game isn't a bad return on his price. The full picture of his cost is a midfielder place that could be filled by a midfielder who has an actual chance of scoring goals, but with fewer assists.

This is the part of the game I really struggle with. How do you balance those two against eachother? If I owned him already, I wouldn't sell him. But is he worth buying at this point, knowing what we know about his FPL scoring pattern?

Yup, I'm not half sure it's worth the investment. For all our lols at GW8, the truth is that those who never had Kun and captained Kompany several times ended up winners and still had an extra 7m to boost their team (the difference of price between Kompany and Aguero).

Yeah, it's tough. I like Deulofeu, I brought him in for Everton's great run of easy games, but I ended up selling him on a FT this week to buy Ramsey. Deulofeu does get a nice stream of assists, but... human nature, I get more excited owning players who score goals. Deulofeu's still a good, solid, steady supplier of points (and an exciting player in real life), and I kind of miss him, though.

I think it is to do with a change in how he plays. For Barcelona B he was rather strong goal scoring wise, I think it was something like 27 goals in 63 or so appearances (or around there). Seems like he has had to change his style and become an assister instead.

Is it his role or the way the PL defences operate that puts him off and stop him getting into positions he feels comfortable shooting from? I did think it odd that he went on a spree for U21 in the international break and then came back and stopped shooting again.

He was in 2-3 great goal scoring positions this GW. Twice Lukaku didn't find him. Once he over ran. And once he mucked it up.

Away from home, he played like a second forward almost looking to get behind the defence. I was convinced he would score in the last ten but was worried he would be taken off.

I don't think a goal is far off. I like his chances against Lei.

I'm not sure tbh. A problem for him at Barcelona (making the transition to the senior team) was that he was so talented at youth level he tended to waltz by players and score. He couldn't do that in the senior team and struggled a bit. With all that said, this is the best I've seen him play since youth level so I have a feeling he is progressing very well. I think he has it in him to be a goal scorer, whether that is right now or not I can't say.

Not with cash flying around like it is atm. No reason to look beyond Mahrez as the mid-priced mid and enough cash for three heavies to go alongside Mahrez.

True enough. Who knows what's round the corner but right now value isn't part of the game we're playing.

Notice that wing players normally don't carry the same goal threat as mids who play centrally... there are exceptions obviously (Alexis) but for the most part, you should only expect assists from players like Deulofeu just based on his style of play.

I think he had 20+ crosses two weeks ago vs Palace, thats an insane amount for one game.

Also, look at Ramsey. As soon as he moved centrally, he became much more dangerous.

I'm not sure I agree with this to be honest. Walcott, Ayew, Mane (kind of), Hazard (when on form). Too many exceptions to make it a good rule.

And Deulofeu's goal threat is remarkably low. Those numbers are more like a very defensive CDM (Darren Fletcher has 4 shots this season, for example).

There's a difference here between an inside forward and a winger. Theo is more inside forward. Delf is more winger.

Yep, very strong in that area. Is it enough to compensate for his near-zero goal threat though?

Dead teams. But Swansea do have the fixtures, and a potential to bounce back under a new manager, so you could be onto something there.

Interesting. Will mull over it. Showed good attacking threat earlier in the season and if Swansea are to rebound it will probably be him and Sigg at the heart of it.

    Courtois

    Dawson/Moreno/Baines

    Wijnaldum/Deulofeu/Yaya Toure/Oscar

    Kane/Zarate/Mitrovic

    Bench: Sanchez/Diouf/Koscielny/Alderweireld/Firmino

Set up right and who to captain is what I'm basically asking. Also, I can bring in one available player. Which team to look at?
