Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 19

Chelsea were without a trio of injured players for yesterday’s trip to United. Everton have worries in the centre of the park, Mousa Dembele is doubtful again for Spurs, whilst West Ham are hopeful on a weekend return for Dimitri Payet. Here’s the latest from yesterday’s matches..

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed the Gunners win over Bournemouth with a minor ankle problem, according to Arsene Wenger. The Arsenal boss also played down Kieran Gibbs’ late withdrawal:

“He [Flamini] might be alright. I could have pushed him but he was a little risk so I decided not to take it because it was an inflamed ankle.”

Aston Villa
Remi Garde was without Jores Okore for the trip to Norwich due to a knee problem:

“His knee was injured. I don’t know how serious. As the game took place very soon after the last one, he had a swollen knee and couldn’t play.”

Chelsea
Gary Cahill missed the trip to United with a foot problem, Guus Hiddink has confirmed, whilst Cesc Fabregas was sidelined due to illness. Loic Remy was unavailable due to a calf complaint.

Crystal Palace
Damien Delaney missed the Eagles’ clash with Swansea after picking up a knock in the weekend draw at Bournemouth.

Everton
James McCarthy returned to action from a groin problem but lasted less than half an hour before suffering a recurrence of the injury. Roberto Martinez has further concerns in the centre of the park after McCarthy’s replacement, Tom Cleverley, was also forced off:

“To lose Tom Cleverley through injury and to get a reaction, a flare up from James McCarthy is a real negative. It was a blow to lose James so early. We felt we needed an extra energy and you saw that with his impact in with the assist for the first goal. Tom then felt his Achilles tendon and we will have to assess it. He tried to stay on as long as he could. He played the pass for Romelu Lukaku for the second goal but he had to come off. He made a really big impact when he came on and he was playing a massive role.”

Newcastle
Steve McClaren was forced to make a last-minute change to his XI for yesterday’s trip to West Brom after Rob Elliot dropped to the bench due to illness. Vurnon Anita was replaced late on after sustaining a hamstring injury, with McClaren fearing the problem is “a bad one”.

Swansea
Federico Fernandez (foot) and Wayne Routledge (knock) were both unavailable for the Swans’ trip to Selhurst Park yesterday.

Tottenham
Mousa Dembele was withdrawn just before the break against Watford yesterday due to a recurrence of his ongoing ankle problem. After the 2-1 win, Mauricio Pochettino went on to say:

“We need to wait and assess him tomorrow. We hope it’s not too bad. Maybe one week, two weeks.”

West Brom
Victor Anichebe was forced off with a hamstring problem late on during the Baggies home win over Newcastle. Jonas Olsson was withdrawn during the first half with a similar complaint, though Tony Pulis remains optimistic on the duo ahead of the weekend derby with Stoke:

“Vic is a top player. He showed that today. They just couldn’t handle him and he did very well. Fingers crossed he and Jonas will be ok for the Stoke game – it’s been suggested that it might just be cramp. Hopefully it won’t be any more.”

West Ham
Nikica Jelavic was sidelined for yesterday’s win over Southampton with a knee injury. Enner Valencia was forced off with a knee problem late on and James Collins picked up an ankle knock but chairman David Gold expects both to make the weekend clash with Liverpool.

In further positive news, Gold says he is “hopeful” that Dimitri Payet could play some part against the Merseysiders this weekend.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

The case for getting rid of Vardy?

In recent weeks Vardy's goals have started to dry up. From a FPL perspective he's still doing okay with scores of 5-7-8-2 over the last 4 game weeks. At 7.6m that's probably still not to be sniffed at.

But with the previous goal scoring record he had, some people already have or are looking at shipping. Of course this is met with confusion by some people, why get rid of the top scorer in the league?

A while back Jose's Magic Omelette wrote a great article asking if Vardy was a season keeper - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/11/03/vardy-and-mahrez-are-they-season-keepers/

One of the arguments was that Vardy wasn't converting an abnormally high amount of chances (like Martial at the time), but was instead just getting lots of opportunities, and eventually from those opportunities would score.

Recently however these goal attempts and shots on target have dropped, which of course coincides with his drop in goals.

    Gameweek 11-14

    Minutes - 360
    Penalty box touches - 28
    Goal attempts - 14
    Shots inside box - 12
    Shots on target - 8
    Shot accuracy - 57.1

    Goals scored - 4

    Gameweek 15-18

    Mins - 338
    Penalty box touches - 17
    Goal attempts - 7
    Shots inside box - 5
    Shots on target - 3
    Shot accuracy - 42.9

    Goals scored - 1

While his shot accuracy has dropped it's not significantly dropped and 42.9 is still fairly impressive. As an example over the same time Lukaku has scored 3 goals with a shot accuracy of 26.3, the key difference is Lukaku has had 19 goal attempts with 15 inside the box.

One of the arguments will be that the fixtures have been a bit tougher, plenty stated that this would be the period he would slow down. I imagine that means he's not fixture proof - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/11/12/are-vardy-and-mahrez-fixture-proof/

To sum up, I'm not saying getting rid of Vardy is the correct choice, and with Bournemouth up next it probably isn't, but there is a reason his goals have dried up and with other strikers doing well I can see why people are thinking of getting rid.

I think it's a time to just hold on him, but assess how he does when the fixtures cool down a bit. If those stats don't improve, I think I'd be ready to twist. Ighalo seems fixture proof atm.

Lost him for Giroud a few weeks ago, mainly as I saw Donk outscoring him for a period of games. Plus being on 4 yellows was a factor and he does look a bit beat up. That said I still fear him tonight and in any game..

Opposition in those 4 GW blocks looks vastly different in defensive quality. Also 3 assists in the 2nd block nearly evens it out. The main difference is the bonus points.

Indeed, mentioned opposition in the original post.

But take another block of 4 tougher fixtures - Stoke (a), Arsenal (h), Norwich (a), Southampton (a).

Granted that those defences haven't been as good as the 4 he's just faced but he scored 6 goals.

Assists have been good, that's why I said his points total have been okay still, but not sure he's going to keep up the assists. Goals are his bread and butter

All you can do in FPL is choose players who you think will score well based on form and fixtures. The fact Walcott had many chances and should've scored proved that it was a good pick, it just didn't come off, which is inevitable sometimes.

with front 7 so consolidated at the moment and not looking like they will stop producing, is it time to look towards an "all-in" defence strategy to begin clawing back points?

By all-in defence I mean tripling/doubling up on 2 teams' defences which have proven to be solid and might continue to be solid (TOT, STO, CRY, maybe WBA). These are highly owned defences but having one is no longer enough.

Having double or triple would let you start clawing by 6-10 points on ML leaders for every clean sheet but is very much against 'FFS Philosophy' of spreading eggs. My gut tells me it's time to really consider moving toward this strategy as a chaser. I don't see it as 'riskier' per se...just a viable strategy to win your ML 'game' in a game.

      What say you?

ok the teams will be up to you to choose - but can't ignore that they are highly owned.

regardless, what are your thoughts on that strategy to make up points but going abit more all-in on popular defences?

            • 10 Years

I'd still rather spread the risk. There's not a team like Chelsea last year that were keeping so many CS that warrants a double up

Stoke's clean sheet record and ML rivals who doubled (those who had BUtland already and just got one extra defender in subsequently) really walked away big winners over the past 7 or so GWs man...hurts.

an affordable defence like Stoke and Palace, could easily double up with one more premium defender of your choice and chip away at ML leads?

Havent had a look at fixture blocks but just spitballin some ideas without resorting to ridiculous punts that might do more damage than good and push me further down my ML.

I've had Walker and Toby, I benched Walker last GW luckily, if it's a tough fixture just bench one of them, it's not a bad strategy but I'd limit it to two from one team and that's it.

It's a great idea ..... as long as you choose a team that, henceforth, keeps lots of clean sheets - and therein lies the problem. I'm all for it, but please can you tell me which team to choose because I have been useless this year!
