Scout Picks Squad – Gameweek 21

We turn our attentions to next week’s Gameweek 21 matches now and give you an early heads-up on our Scout Picks thinking ahead of Tuesday evening’s deadline. This list of 22 players will also include some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the week unfolds.

For now, here’s the players currently on our radar…

Goalkeepers

Jack Butland (5.2) boasts 10 save and bonus points in as many starts, ensuring he’s the prime route into a Stoke City defence that’s carded eight clean sheets ahead of Norwich City’s visit. We’re also considering Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey (4.1), who is matched up against an Aston Villa attack that’s notched just three goals in five outings.

Defenders

With two clean sheets and a pair of assists in his last six, Toby Alderweireld (6.1) has amassed eight more points (95) than any defender this term, rendering him the premier source of Spurs defensive coverage as they prepare to host a Leicester City outfit that’s drawn three successive blanks and has doubts over Jamie Vardy’s fitness.

Ashley Williams (4.8) – who’s claimed maximum bonus points in all but one of the Swans’ five clean sheets this season – represents the best selection among a backline that silenced their opposition in three of the last four Gameweeks. Bolstering the Welshman’s Fantasy appeal, Swansea welcome a Sunderland side that’s tallied four goals in as many road ties.

Scott Dann (5.8) places joint-top among defenders for goals (three) and has been the shining light in a defence that recorded clean sheets in three of their previous five match-ups.

Branislav Ivanovic (6.5) has displayed renewed attacking verve since the appointment of Gus Hiddink, as evidenced by his first goal and assist of the campaign against Sunderland. Furthermore, Chelsea have impressed on the defensive front of late – registering back-to-back clean sheets – so are well-placed to stifle a West Brom team that mustered just three goals in their last four on the road.

With three assists to his name this term, Glen Johnson (5.3) offers the greatest capacity for attacking returns across the Potters’ rearguard. Elsewhere, Chris Smalling (6.8) remains the only secure route into United’s defence ahead of their road clash against Newcastle, who have failed to score since Gameweek 17.

West Ham United have proven a tough nut to crack since early December, chalking up four shut-outs in six outings. As such, Aaron Cresswell (5.5) piques our interest prior to a road encounter against Bournemouth, who have drawn blanks in their previous trio of fixtures. The former Ipswich Town full-back has accrued one goal and three assists and enjoys a share of the Hammers’ free-kicks.

Midfielders

Notwithstanding Yaya Toure’s recent flourish (three goals in four starts), Kevin De Bruyne (10.9) is our preferred City midfielder for the visit of Everton- the Belgian has served up 16 points in each of his last two home starts in the top-flight.

Marko Arnautovic (6.7) is in the midst of a purple patch (three goals in six) and will relish the prospect of facing a Norwich City defence that’s managed just three clean sheets all season.

Bagging two goals and an assist in four outings, Oscar (8.2) has emerged as a viable, mid-priced pick-up under the stewardship of Hiddink. Although Willian comes in cheaper than his Brazilian compatriot and is a skilled free-kick artist, Oscar arguably presents more of a threat from open play and also took Chelsea’s last spot-kick when Eden Hazard was on the pitch.

Riyad Mahrez (7.2) has posted three blanks on the trot but remains in our thoughts for Leicester’s trip to Tottenham, given he’s produced five sets of double-figures on his travels so far.

Mesut Ozil (10.0) has only failed to deliver Fantasy returns on two occasions across the last 14 Gameweeks, which bodes well for his attacking prospects at Anfield. Liverpool’s spate of defensive injuries will surely bolster his points potential.

Deli Alli (5.4) fell into the fifth-midfielder bracket earlier in the campaign but has since elevated his status with three goals and two assists in six starts. Aside from Harry Kane, the former MK Dons starlet is establishing himself as the choice route into a Lilywhites offense that’s tallied eight goals in four match-ups ahead of the visit of Leicester.

West Ham racked up five goals in their previous three fixtures and Michail Antonio (5.2) played a part (two goals and assists) in four of those, cementing his right-wing berth. The budget wide man – and the Irons’ offense as a whole – will doubtless profit from Dmitri Payet’s return to action, given that the Frenchman possess the second-best key-pass frequency (one every 23.4 minutes) of any midfielder this term.

Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson earns the nod for the visit of Sunderland. Having bagged the consolation at United last weekend, the Icelandic international will be looking to justify the underlying stats – he sits top amongst midfielders for shots on target (eight) over the last five Gameweeks.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (13.1) snapped his barren streak with an authoritative header against Watford, portending a return to form that has already prompted 37,000 Fantasy managers to snap up the explosive marksman for Man City’s home encounter against Everton. The fact that the Toffees conceded eight goals over the last four Gameweeks strengthens Aguero’s case for inclusion in our Scout Squad.

With three goals and one assist in his last two starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has thrust himself back into relevancy on the Fantasy scene. Fuelled by a renewed confidence and determination to impress the newly-installed boss, the irascible frontman could well punish a Baggies defence that notched a solitary clean sheet in their previous 10 outings.

Harry Kane (9.8) has grabbed braces in two of his past four home starts ahead of this weekend’s visit of Leicester. Everton’s trip to the Etihad promises to be a testing match-up, but Romelu Lukaku (9.3) is pitted against a Sky Blues rearguard that hasn’t secured a home clean sheet since Gameweek 4.

Watford’s top scorer Odion Ighalo (6.3) has netted in every fixture bar one since Gameweek 14 and travels to face a floundering Southampton outfit that’s mustered one win in eight match-ups.

On Standby

In addition to the standout players detailed above, there are a half-dozen recruits who are on the periphery of our thinking but could yet make the cut.

West Ham’s upturn in form brings Andy Carroll (6.4) and Dmitri Payet (7.7) into contention. The former has scored in consecutive starts and tallied three more shots on target (seven) than any forward during that time frame, while the latter averaged 6.2 points per appearance prior to picking up his ankle injury.

Yohan Cabaye (6.5) returns from suspension to face a Villains squad that’s registered just one clean sheet at home. Elsewhere in the capital, Willian (7.1) notched one goal and four assists in his previous four outings and charts top among Chelsea’s midfield contingent for shots on target (10).

A move up top for last week’s trip to United suggests Andre Ayew (11) may benefit from an advanced berth for Sunderland’s visit. Georginio Wijnaldum (6.9) is without a goal in five starts yet places top among midfielders for shots inside the box (nine) since Gameweek 17, with a move to a central support role strengthening the Dutchman’s appeal.

The Community Champion

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. Red Devil leads the way after beating the Picks by 25 points in Gameweek 17.

Gameweek 21’s Community Champion as selected by our lottery, is Lateriser12. He is currently ranked 77,547th and his highest finish in his seven years as a FPL manager was in 2012/13, where he ended the season 189th in the overall rankings.

In addition to a shot at the £100 Amazon prize, FantasyBet are offering a chance for further prizes to Community Champions that are eligible to play their games. More details can be found here.

    Moreno + Ramsey > Williams + Oscar.

    Good, bad or meh?

Oscar can be frustrating. Might work, might not.

I like the Williams pick though.

Oscar would be a punt fir WBA and Everton. If he doesn't work out I'd downgrade to Payet who will (hopefully) be properly up and running by then.

Williams is one of those players that only ever seems to do well for me when I own him.

I like it… a lot. You have similar thinking to me with Oscar. It's a punt, but with 1.4% ownership and Chelsea on the up, it could work out really well.
If the worse comes to it, a quick downgrade to Payet by then is not to much of a biggie imo.

I would never never never buy Oscar as an fpl option. I'm a Chelsea fan and Oscar is extremely frustrating and had to be one of the most inconsistent players I have ever see . Does amazing one match then becomes a ghost for weeks in a row, sometimes missing an entire second half of the season.

-4 is nothing when you think about it. Especially if you think one player will out score another over a period of time.

Aye. Best not to get into the habit of doing it too often though as you can start doing moves for hits that could easily wait a week or two. If it will pay off in the long term then it will probably still be a good move next week.

True; but then the 2 CS did come against a Villa and Southampton side (bar their 4-0 win against Arsenal) that are really struggling for goals.

I've currently got him benched in a front 7 that has:

      KDB, Payet, Ozil, Alli
      Kane, Iggy, Lukaku

If the yellow next to Lukaku's name proves to hold, Mahrez comes back in.

Fearing this as well, looked around a fair bit in fan forums & the overwhelming consensus is that the likely backline for the FA cup & Prem will be:

        FA:
        -Trippier - Toby - Wimmer/Vert - Rose--

        Prem:
        --Walker - Toby - Verts - Davies--

If Rose starts in the Cup match, think that'd be the final nail in the coffin

Tough with 2 frees and not a lot wrong.

            Yeah that's the conundrum.

They're definitely on the way up but i've never really rated Costa fpl wise. Haz has a lot of room for improvement. Defender maybe but no rush as my defence is decent enough i reckon

Willian or Oscar then? Someone has to be getting these points if they are truly gonna come back to form and Hazard is out.

Personally i think Costa is the stand out option but i can understand people being put off by his price when you compare him to the likes of Ighalo/Lukaku

Well that's a good point, i can see both of them of them being good options. Oscar is the only one capable of being a great option imo but still i can't say im convinced. I rate Willian but he is not a pure goal/assist player, puts the team first. Would rather just wait and see atleast for one or two weeks

This benching headache is killing me.

Mahrez, Alli, Lukaku, Kane and Arnie.

Kun, Payet and Ozil are my other 3 that are almost definitely playing.

Mahrez - has pens and can explode at any time. But they are away against a solid Spurs defence that rarely concedes more than 1.
Alli - Would have Kane cover but a constant goal threat atm
Lukaku - Against City but showed tonight that he can score against them.
Kane - Would have Alli cover but can explode. Not keen on this
Arnie - Norwich at home very good fixture... OTOH he's scored nearly all his goals (bar one against Villa) against the better teams.

Why? Only Mahrez and Ozil I think have more points per game and West Ham have Bournemouth - who yes, have been solid recently but I still think they will have another game at some point like the City/Spurs earlier in the year because they're not a side that will park the bus. Hopefully he will play ~60 mins in the cup unscathed and will get at least 60/possibly whole game against Bournemouth.

    From the 'Say What' article:

“We were the worst in the Premier League for allowing crosses to come into the box and one of the worst for making blocks. You can guess the sides who are top – Stoke and West Ham, who have proper defenders. We have proper defenders too, but it was about making them aware of the numbers in a meeting and asking if they realized what was happening. We had only a 20 per cent success rate in stopping crosses, but in the last couple of games that’s gone up to 50 per cent. The number of block tackles in the box has almost doubled as well. It was just about them getting half a yard closer. We have three clean sheets, which is a good base. Rather than having to defend the crosses, we have stopped them at the source.” - Alan Curtis

Sherwood could learn a thing or two from Curtis, not too shabby from a 'caretaker' manager 😉

Rather than having to defend the crosses, we have stopped them at the source... so many teams/managers should remember this.

Criminal how many teams/players you see just lazily hanging out a leg instead of making 100% effort to stop the cross

Definitely, & it's crazy how it's such a fundamental part of football. Like you said, too many full-back it seems just give up when they get beat by an inch or two to the byline to get a cross in.

Zanetti would cry looking at some of these full-backs getting beat so easily.

If you needed a defender 4.2 or less, would Bavies or Rangel pass as suitable choices or not good enough with rotation/clean sheet chances?

Bavies is £4.2 now?? I'd jump at that for a chance of spurs D if the other 4 are fine.

If you NEED to play the one you bring in this week then it could be worth a punt, but otherwise I'd go Simpson.

Good thing is both Bavies and Rangel seems to either start or not play at all. Especially Bavies. Monitor Spurs line-up for FA Cup, if Rose starts then Bavies looks tempting.

They already have under Curtis though tbh, three CS's now in their last four (WHU, WBA, cry) & have only conceded two big chances in the last four GW's. That's one more CS in 5 games than Monk had all season!

What's holding me back from Swansea is the question mark over how long Curtis is going to be in charge.

            • 9 Years
            8 years, 5 months ago

Yeah I can see that, many managers being linked with Swansea. Still, at 4.1 & as a benchable 5th defender, if you have 3/4 other nailed defenders, I can't see the risk being too high. Good fixtures & Naughton's struggled for quite some time now. Surely Curtis has pinpointed Naughton as the weak link in the backline & will pass that down to the next manager?

            1. Diva
              • 9 Years
              8 years, 5 months ago

No guarantee the new manager will see things the same way though. With DGWs looming every free transfer now will be potentially even more valuable and need to be thought through carefully. I don't see the point in risking it.

                • 9 Years

No there isn't, yet, it's certainly a 50/50 call. No one knows if Curtis will stay until the summer you're right, but if you have other nailed defenders, I think the risk is mitigated.

Rangel is probably safer (bar if Rose starts in the Cup), Naughton's only played vs Palace under Curtis when he rested nearly all his first-string players. Rangel's locked that spot is my assumption with the evidence in hand, IMO.

Is Wengers unwillingness to rest his players and manage their workloads his greatest weakness as a manager?

Every year they look great until injuries wear them down. It's only a matter of time before Ozil breaks down.

    1. Royal5
      • 12 Years

It´s usually the same players that are injured though? Walcott, Gibbs, Ramsey, Ox and Wilshere. These players seem very injuryprone, but yeah I agree that it´s a pattern at Arsenal alright.

      1. Royal5
        • 12 Years

Surely the physios also has to share the blame on all the injuries at Arsenal over the years.

There are always more injury prone players than others for sure, Arsenal have their share.

He does seem to rotate less than other top 4 managers, mourinho being another exception mind you. Surely all those games catch up with the players.

Also isn't it the managers job to make sure the right support team is in place, including Physios he has been there 19 years.

Lukaku, meanwhile, took a knock to his ankle shortly before he scored what proved to be the winner on the night but Martinez does not expect the Belgian to be out for long.

"Rom will be assessed," he said. "I don't know if he'll be available for the weekend, but I don't expect it to be too serious."

What would you do with this lot if Lukaku is ok?

    de Gea Hennessey
Ward Bellerín Moreno van Dijk Simpson
Arnautovic De Bruyne Mahrez Ramsey Özil
    Lukaku Kane Vardy

2 FT, £2.3m in the bank.

    a) fix a defender/Ramsey and bench Vardy
    b) Ramsey + Vardy > 4.2 + Aguero
    c) Ramsey + Vardy + VVD > Alli + Aguero + Davies/Rangel( up to 4.2)
    d) something else

    Cheers for any help

Agüero is the obvious replacement for Vardy, but I'm not sure Stanislas is the man you want to replace Ramsey. Therefore, I'm struggling to see a way to do Vardy to Agüero this week without taking a hit.

Good point, & that defense is a bit shoddy this week as well, wouldn't feel comfortable relying on Simpson, VVD or Moreno for a CS this GW.

Hmm, maybe C is the better call.

Every RMT and RMWC I see has Butland + Whoever as keepers.

But if buying now...is Butland worth 5.2m?
Why not Courtois for 5.2m - bigger risk/reward but potentially also better value for money?

I wouldn't buy Butland now, as I think his streak may be ending after this week. I would go Courtois if you want a "set and forget" type, or maybe Fabianski if you need funds elsewhere

      Reasonable point re: Butland's price.

    3. dmhomag

Due to saves, baps from saves and the unpredictability of clean sheets the accepted wisdom is to go cheap on keepers (Butland Gomez Boruc vs Hart Cech DDG).

FPL tried to change it up this year by making premium keepers only 5.5. Not working since premium keepers do not score better.

      Elliot/Rudd?

So it didn't seem that bad, but if Lukaku is injured for one GW or two would it be worth a -4 to get Kun or just play Mahrez?

I hope you weren't planning to bench Mahrez.

Even in current form, there is no way it is worth taking a -4 over playing Mahrez.

I was planning on benching him yes. It's either him or Alli so maybe a Lukaku injury is what I needed

Agreed. But I think´s reasonable to consider benching him. Leicester up against the best defence in the league this season and possibly without Vardy - Who usually create a lot of space for Mahrez.

But if he explodes - and we know he's capable of it - he will probably kill your OR. It's a big risk.

                Very true.

Guess i'm just going to have to hope Lukaku misses the game then so I can play both Alli and Mahrez.

                Thanks 🙂

Yeah, the risk is defo there. Spurs very rarely let in more than one goal this season though. So, statistically the risk isn´t too big. I reckon you have to look at the player you´re starting over him, most options a midfield has better fixtures this GW.
