Scout Scribbles – Klopp’s Men Clinch Wembley Spot

Liverpool edge into the Capital One Cup final thanks to a spot-kick shootout win over Stoke. Marko Arnautovic returns from injury to get amongst the goals. Vincent Kompany could be back in two weeks’ time for City. Carl Jenkinson may be out for the season, whilst Bournemouth new boy Juan Iturbe bags a hat-trick for the reserves to strengthen his first-team claim.

Allen the Liverpool Hero

Despite losing 1-0 at home to Stoke on the night, Liverpool triumphed in a penalty shootout to progress through to the Capital One Cup final. Simon Mignolet rebuffed spot-kicks from Peter Crouch and Marc Muniesa, with Joe Allen slotting home the hosts’ winning penalty. Nathaniel Clyne was sidelined with a knee complaint, so Jon Flanagan clocked 105 minutes at Anfield. Having shaken off his hamstring problem, Dejan Lovren returned to the matchday squad, though was an unused sub by Jurgen Klopp.

The Scout Says: From a Fantasy perspective, the result, of course, means that Liverpool’s Gameweek 27 showdown with Everton – which was due to take place on February 28, ie the same day as the Capital One Cup final – will now need to be rescheduled, handing Fantasy managers the first double Gameweek of the season. With the Toffees and Man City set to battle it out for the other berth later tonight, new dates for the fixture should be imminent, allowing us the chance to plan our future transfers with a greater degree of clarity. Gameweeks 25, 34 and 37 look the most likely, with last night’s result also meaning that Everton (as Liverpool’s GW27 opponents) will have a double Gameweek and subsequent blank regardless of whether they advance this evening. Although the Reds did enough to overcome the Potters, Klopp will still be concerned by their lack of consistency. Since recording back-to-back 1-0 wins over Leicester City and Sunderland, Liverpool have tasted victory once in four outings, shipping 10 goals along the way. Additionally, only three teams surrendered more shots inside the box (25) over the stretch, exposing their inability to control matches. Beyond a trip to the King Power Stadium next Gameweek, Klopp’s charges enjoy a pair of favourable fixtures (SUN, avl), so it’s certainly worth keeping tabs on their prime Fantasy assets. Lovren’s return to the bench last night strengthens Klopp’s defensive options, with the Croatian likely to replace Kolo Toure in the centre-back pecking order once fully-fit.

Arnautovic strike not enough for Potters

Courtesy of a Bojan Krkic assist, the fit-again Marko Arnautovic was on target as Stoke crashed out of the Capital One Cup at the final hurdle. Xherdan Shaqiri started on the bench but entered the fray at the 77-minute mark. In the absence of the injured Ryan Shawcross, the 4.2-priced Marc Muniesa was the favoured partner for Philipp Wollscheid in central defence. Charlie Adam left the field of play in extra time with a knock.

The Scout Says: Considering that Stoke posted blanks in their previous two league ties, Hughes will have been delighted to see Arnautovic back on the scoresheet before a trip to Manchester United. The Staffordshire outfit were pitiable in the final third at Leicester last Gameweek – notching a paltry three attempts and two shots on target – so will be desperate to give a better account of themselves against a Red Devils outfit that’s registered just one victory in five home encounters. That being said, no side has conceded fewer goals (five) or shots inside the box (56) on familiar soil than Louis van Gaal’s unit, which suggests that Stoke could be set for another frustrating afternoon. The Austrian’s return to form will frustrate the 84,000+ FPL managers who have parted company since the weekend – no other player has been subject to more transfers out.

Jenkinson Blow for Hammers

West Ham look set to be without the on-loan Carl Jenkinson for the rest of the season. The right-back sustained knee ligament damage during Saturday’s home draw with Man City and is likely to return to his parent club Arsenal prior to undergoing any required surgery.

The Scout Says: Now that Jenkinson’s out of the picture, there’s a two-way tussle for supremacy at the right-back berth, with James Tomkins – who returned to training on Tuesday following a knock – and newcomer Sam Byram in the mix. The former has been stationed there since Gameweek 15, but the latter made an impressive debut against Manchester City, potentially lining him up for further starts. From a Fantasy perspective, Byram is the one that piques our interest by virtue of his attacking threat: he was has frequently deployed on the right wing at Leeds and racked up three goals last month. In terms of the Hammers’ clean-sheet prospects, their schedule throws up a quartet of favourable match-ups (AVL, sou, nor, SUN), with Aston Villa – who rank bottom for goals scored (18) – first on the agenda.

Kompany Close to City Comeback

During yesterday’s press conference, Manuel Pellegrini discredited claims that Vincent Kompany has suffered another injury setback, asserting that the Sky Blues skipper is likely to be back in contention in a fortnight’s time:

“I don’t think Vincent will be out for six weeks – he will return in a couple of weeks. As I said in the last press conference, it’s very important how he improves in the next weeks. Be sure we are doing all we can to review Vincent in different places with different doctors. For him also, he’s very sad not to play, I hope that now when he comes back he will be fit until the end of the season.”

The Scout Says: Notwithstanding Manchester City’s relative success at the back in recent Gameweeks (three clean sheets and three goals conceded in the last five), the errors committed by their centre-backs at the Boleyn Ground highlighted the paramount importance of Kompany to their defensive resolve. The Sky Blues recorded clean sheets in all but one of the eight league ties that Kompany started and finished, while they’ve mustered just three in 15 without the Belgium international’s commanding presence. In light of his absence and Pellegrini’s decision to begin rotating at the full-back positions as the schedule pocks up pace, we’ve been restricted to Nicolas Otamendi in our search for a stable route into the defence. Although the 6.5-priced Argentinian is a decent shout ahead of a trip to Sunderland, Man City’s subsequent home clashes against Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur look less conducive to shut-outs, with Kompany perhaps more likely to be fit in time for the Gameweek 27 trip to Newcastle.

Mirallas and Besic out for Toffees

Roberto Martinez revealed that Muhamed Besic (hamstring) and Kevin Mirallas (knee) will sit out Everton’s Capital One Cup tie against Man City this evening and have undergone further assessments to ascertain the extent of their respective injuries:

“As we expected, Mo Besic and Kevin Mirallas won’t be available tomorrow. We will have a bit more detail [about their injuries] today when both players will be reassessed.”

The Scout Says: Prior to being forced off against Swansea on Sunday, Mirallas had muscled himself back into contention on the Toffees’ flanks. Indeed, last weekend was the first time he had started back-to-back league matches this season, with Martinez rewarding the Belgian for his goal against Chelsea in Gameweek 22 – his second strike in three league outings. Frustratingly, this comes at a time when Gerard Deulofeu’s pitch time on the Toffees’ right flank has been somewhat marginalised, with the young Spaniard failing to start consecutive league matches since Gameweek 17 as Martinez starts to rotate more. Given that Ross Barkley has blanked in seven of the last nine, our in-form options in the Everton midfield look slim-to-none right now.

Fit-again King returns for Cherries reserves

Juan Iturbe bagged a hat-trick as Bournemouth’s U21 outfit ran out 4-3 victors over Gillingham yesterday. Joshua King scored on his return to action for the Cherries, while Tommy Elphick also ramped up his rehabilitation with an hour of pitch time at the Canford Park Arena.

The Scout Says: Yesterday’s match will certainly give Eddie Howe food for though on the flanks. Although the Bournemouth boss is sweating over a knee injury to Junior Stanislas, Iturbe’s performance, allied with King’s return, strengthens his options out wide. Iturbe has played just 41 minutes since arriving at Dean Court earlier this months but his display will surely boost his chances of greater pitch time. King, meanwhile, may have to settle for a role out wide, given the recent output of new signing Benike Afobe. The former Wolves man has scored twice in three league outings and looks to have ended King’s prospects of returning to the lone striker role, leaving him to battle it out for a spot out wide in Howe’s 4-1-4-1 set-up. At the other end of the pitch, Elphick’s return could trigger a chain of events, with Simon Francis returning to right-back and Adam Smith dropping to the bench. Alternatively, Steve Cook could make way for the Cherries’ captain. Regardless, Charlie Daniels – who’s converted two penalties in seven outings – represents the choice route into the south-coast club’s defence ahead of a mixed batch of fixtures (cry, ARS, STO, wat).

If Man city goes through to cup final, here's some of their matches

      gw25 LEI
      gw26 TOT
      midweek cl match in Kiev
gw27 blank in PL, but cup final

I give zero chance for dgw25 for city.

And how things seem to go in fpl nowadays, it's inevitable that Everton will go through anyway and we will have only Liv-Eve for double.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

We now know that Liverpool and Everton will face a blank in GWK 27 and are likely to have a double GWK 25, 34 or 37.

The tough part is knowing when that double is and how to plan. For now though I thought I'd start a hot topic on which are the best players to get in for the double - whenever that may be.

      For Everton

Lukaku's recent form is a worry, but underlying stats suggest that he is still making goal attempts, just has slipped in terms of accuracy. I'm wagering that improves making him a great DGWK asset.

I think there defence is poor in terms of clean sheets, but Baines or Coleman (if back) represent strong assist potential.

In midfield Deulofeu is possibly the best option. Not nailed on but the team attack more when he's on and seems to have better assist potential than the likes of Barkley at the moment.

      For Liverpool

Firmino is the number one target. He is potentially DGWK captaincy potential too.

Henderson - should be a steady dgwk scorer, on pens and the odd assist in him too. Could easily get a double digit DGWK score

None of the others appeal, even Coutinho if fit as he is too injury prone currently.

Don't feel the same about Deulofeu having owned him for a few plum fixtures early on. Minutes are a risk in a double. Barkley on the other hand, while frustrating, has shown he can get double figure scores back to back. I wouldn't want to go into an Everton DGW without him.

As for defenders, it'd only be worth touching them if you think the derby won't have loads of goals. And form suggests it will. It feels sad to not even consider Baines for an Everton double though...

Not sure I can even think about players until I know when the DGW is, get the feeling that GW25 may be to close and by GW34 or 37 I'd want to pick on more recent form.

Still need to keep them in mind. Need to also think about which to ditch if there is no dgwk 25 ahead of the blank. there may be some with Aguero, KDB (assuming Man City go through), Lukaku, Firmino and Moreno - that also needs to be planned for as two of those need to go to field 11.

Actually think Newcastle could do alright with their fixtures for a DGW, least likely to rotate and even City at home could be good for them, if Pellegrini changes it around.

Firmino is coming in for me for Mahrez for the Sunderland game - I'll probably get Drinkwater in so I have Leicester cover in midfield during that fallow gameweek 27 (spending both my transfers this week - injuries permitting - on very boring moves to give myself some cash itb).

Everton wise, I'm happy to keep Lukaku. His form FPL wise is worrying BUT he does get a lot of shots/headers/etc - the Everton team appears to be set up to give him chances. Perhaps still "learning his trade" as the maxim goes. He'll get a few more hauls before the year is out.

I have Aguero, KDB and Lukaka at the moment. I'd been looking at bringing Firminho in, but if there isn't a DGW in GW25, I think I will just stay clear of Liverpool altogether for the time being, so that I'll be able to field a team at all in GW27!

If City go through, so we have 2 matches postponed in GW27, it is mandatory they both will be rescheduled in the same GW?

The question on who to bring in largely depends on when the matches will be rescheduled. If GW34 or 37 then it is too early to discuss this.

If GW25, then again it needs to be put in the context of other potential teams with DGW and also who you drop to make room for your DGWers.

Better have this discussion tomorrow when it's likely we'll know when the matches wil be played.

If GW25 is to be a DGW, then this cannot be confirmed till after Liverpool, Everton and potentially Man City have played their FA Cup games this weekend.

Depending on the results of these FA Cup games, some of these teams may have a Cup Replay instead in GW25 or a free date in GW26 on FA Cup 5th round day.

...If Liverpool, Everton or Man City win their FA Cup matches this weekend, then they will have to allow for the possibility that they might reach the FA Cup semi-final, in which case they would have to rearrange their League matches from GW30 and GW35 to GW34 and GW37, so these game-weeks would not be available for their League matches rearranged from GW27.

However, if Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea
          or Liverpool, Everton and Palace
or Man City and Man United
or Man City, Stoke and Liverpool
          all lose this weekend,
then that will leave a free date in either GW34 or GW37 for a League match rearranged from GW27.

Not sure you read the original article, different comments to these ones. He's always said he'll give youth a chance, and mentioned United's youth players. Here, it's suggesting he'll turn to youth now due to the club's poor form

Taking just his quotes from the article rather than MEN's construction around them, it really doesn't seem to be that dfifferent from the standard LVG approach to young kids

“The younger players will get their opportunities during the course of the season but they have to be patient,"

He's a greedy man, first on the pitch which isn't too problematic, but then clearly off the pitch greed has gotten the better of him, which is a problem.

Anyone else got the instinctive feeling that there won't be a DGW in GW25?

    10. Worzel Gummidge
        8 years, 3 months ago

I was going to do Ozil to Firmino if Pool had a DGW. I am completely avoiding their attacking assets now and will get Yaya in instead if City also have one. I vaguely remember big Yaya tearing DGWs up.

Yaya was indeed one of the highest ever DGWK scorers. He got 31 one DGWK. Which would be worth a mighty 93 to triple captainers. I think I'd faint if I got 93 from just one player.

Other top scorers were Rooney with 32.

Am I right in thinking that if there isn't a DGW in 25, there is likely to be a triple GW in 34/37? Or would 37 be a smaller DGW? Depends on FA Cup I guess.

I wouldn't have thought so - it would take a very special set of circumstances for a triple GW - you certainly couldn't classify it as likely.

Middlesboro had one the year they got to the UEFA Cup Final - that's the only time it's happened in FPL History. But none of their players played all 3 matches (not even the GK).

They played Saturday/Tuesday/Friday in what was GW37. GW38 was on the Sunday so 4 games in 8 days to finish the season.

Triple captaincy candidates. Who would you "trust" of the potential candidates (assuming we're TCing in a DGW)

          Lukaku? Bit of a troll.
          Firmino? Still unproven.
Kun? Hygiene option - everyone will do it if they have a DGW
KdB? Definitely in my consideration set; potential to explode if at home
Silva? Assisting all those Kun goals and could score a tap in or two himself
          Yaya? Proven quality

Will be a toughie - be tempted to go KdB just to differentiate but very likely to bite me in the behind!

To be honest, given how many have already used their TC, I don't think a differential is really the way to go. It could work, but ending up with 8 points is always a risk.

All seem relatively good options, many things like form etc. to consider at the time of the DGW though.

Current form suggests there'll only be one winner but you never know. Everton went there recently in the league and got a 0-0 so anything is possible.

          A. Arnie & Bellerin -> Firmino & Ivan
          B. Arnie & Nyom -> Firmino & PVA
          C. Drop Mahrez, Ozil, or Payet
          D. Take a hit

So who would u keep from DDG or Butland long term.

Was set on keeping Butland but I'm not too sure now.

          Price not an issue

Hey Luke, I would keep Butland. For the month that Shawx is out his fixtures are :

            manu/EVE/bourn/VILLA/NEW

Besides he averaged 4pp over the first 7 fixtures, with no CS. Even had an assist!

Selling DDG will free up more funds as well.

Yep fair shout, thanks for this.

Every week I go to do it but then I end up plying DDG as his fixture is better.

              Same again this week IMO.

I'll get round to it eventually!

          How's this looking?

          Butland
          Moreno, Dawson, Daniels
          Ozil, Alli, Mahrez, Payet
          Aguero(c), Kane, Lukaku

          (Krul, Wij, Richards, Nyom)

Should I bench Moreno for Richards/Nyom? Should I try to fit in Wij?

Looks like I'll have to take a double, or even triple drop on KDB. I bought at 10.8 so I'm losing selling value with every drop but I don't want to sell before a game against Sunderland. What are holders doing?

          Team is:

          DDG
          Dawson Bellerin Moreno Ward Cresswell
          KDB Ozil Mahrez Alli Payet
          KUN Ighalo Lukaku

Bought at 10.4.. Would need a hit to get him out and can only sell for 10.5 now anyway so just going to keep him. Sellers will regret it after his next 15+ point haul 😉

Any ideas for this bunch folks? 🙂

          Butland - McCarthy
          Bellerin - Adler - Ward - Moreno - Francis
          KDB - Ozil - Mahrez - Payet - Westwood
          Kane - Aguero - Lukaku

Was thinking Moreno & Westwood > Targett & Alli? Would play AOA next week.

No need for AOA with Bellerin, Alder and Ward upcoming GW (which is next week). Getting Alli leaves you the same problem as me (see post below), so I would avoid actually. Or play AOA as Alli >>> Ward. Tough choice.

Surely benching Kun is a non-option, and also KdB (upcoming GW). Benching Lukaku also a pretty wierd choice. Payet? Never. Mahrez? Never again. Kane away to Norwich? Hell no. And Alli scores regulary in away games. Leaves me no other choice than either benching Ozil (sou) or playing Bench Boost with Hennessey (BOU), Targett (ars) and Moreno (lei)/defender max 5.8 (Cresswell/Collins/Azpi/Coleman). So:

          A) Bench boost and do Moreno->Coleman or Collins (Collins means I can swap Ozil to Alexis for free if Alexis shows form vs Soton)
          B) Save FT, bench Ozil or Alli

          I value your opinion, cheers

Do you have your all out attack chip? I'd save the bench boost for a DGW.

No, used it early on. I don't put too much in using the bench boost for a DGW, but I will save it until my bench looks likely to get +15pts, which the upcoming GW could grant.

Benching Mahrez is home to a leaky Liverpool? Alli away to Norwich? I think Ozil is least likely to score double digits (trying to avoid that cause that hurts badly).

              Cheers

Hennessey, Coleman and Ozil is a pretty strong bench don't you think? And Targett could surprise... One CS out of three plus an assist from Ozil and it will be around 15-18 pts.

              Cheers

I have a feeling Ozil will fade away. Sanchez will revert to being the main man if he can recapture some form.

Thinking the same. Would not be surprised is Ozil ends up blanking home to in-from Soton. Ozil will provide more assists ofc, but not with the same frequency as before Christmas, maybe not even close.

              Cheers
