FA Cup Scout Notes – Fourth Round – Saturday

Spurs win at a canter, Alexis Sanchez inspires a Gunners victory, while Kelechi Iheanacho passes another audition as Sergio Aguero’s stand-in. Here are all the notes from Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round ties…

Chadli Stars In Spurs Stroll

Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to his starting XI as Tottenham Hotspur cruised into the fifth round by way of a 4-1 victory at Colchester. Harry Kane was among the starters but left the field shortly after Spurs doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld were unused on the bench.

Nacer Chadli bolstered his case for a starting berth at Norwich on Tuesday with a brace and an assist. The Belgian has notched four goals and two assists in a trio of outings across all competitions, arguably pushing him ahead of Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela in the tussle for that fourth spot in the Lilywhites’ attacking quartet.

Eric Dier netted Tottenham’s second with a heavily deflected strike, while Tom Carroll – who started in central midfield but advanced to the number ten berth following Moussa Dembele’s introduction on 56 minutes – bagged his third goal of the season. Elsewhere, Kieran Trippier, Nabil Bentaleb and Erik Lamela picked up assists.

With Jan Vertonghen sidelined for at least two months, Kevin Wimmer was handed a start alongside Dier in central defence. Given the recent backing from Pochettino, Wimmer would seem destined to partner Alderweireld at Carrow Road. The Austrian is priced at just 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League and would therefore offer an assured route into the Spurs defence over the next two months. Spurs are, however, without a clean sheet in their last five.

Sanchez Ignites Gunners

Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny – who both lasted the distance – were the only players that retained their starting slots as Arsenal recorded a 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates. Alexis Sanchez was the star of the show, marking his first start since November with a goal and assist as part of an impressive display. The Chilean ranks seventh with regards to “transfers in” (67,000) ahead of a home tie against Southampton, with a wave of Kevin De Bruyne owners making the switch in response to the Belgian’s long-term injury.

Operating at right-back, Callum Chambers opened the scoring with a sumptuous strike. With Aaron Ramsey rested and absent from the matchday squad, a fit-again Francis Coquelin partnered debutant Mohamed Elneny in the centre of the park. Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal were both unused substitutes.

Iheanacho Punishes Villa

Manchester City crushed Aston Villa 4-0 en route to the last 16. Kelechi Iheanacho illustrated his burgeoning potential with a hat-trick (one penalty) and assist for the visitors, boosting his tally to eight for the season. Certainly, with Wilfried Bony consigned to the treatment room and De Bruyne out of action, the Nigerian frontman could be in line to enjoy increased pitch time in the month ahead. The same can be said of Raheem Sterling, who netted the fourth goal and claimed an assist.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva were unused on the bench at Villa Park, while Yaya Toure was handed the afternoon off.

City’s defence recorded their fourth clean sheet in six across all competitions, offering encouragement for investors in their rearguard before a favourable trip to Sunderland in midweek. Bacary Sagna was recalled and deployed at centre-back alongside Nicolas Otamendi throughout – his impressive performance will have given Pellegrini food for thought while the Chilean waits on Vincent Kompany’s recovery from injury.

Eagles Edge Past Potters

Wilfried Zaha was on target as Crystal Palace sneaked past Stoke City in a 1-0 home win. The twinkle-toed winger has been the Eagles’ premier threat of late but is suffering from Palace’s lack of cohesion in the final third – as evidenced by the fact they mustered just two shots on target against the Potters.

To compound matters, Dwight Gayle had a setback in training, further diminishing Alan Pardew’s options in the absence of the suspended striker Connor Wickham. Nonetheless, the Palace boss revealed that Emmanuel Adebayor is likely to be involved in some capacity in the midweek meeting with Bournemouth.

Yohan Cabaye – who served up the assist for Zaha – represents the Londoners’ chief creative presence, but is now a major doubt for their midweek fixture after leaving the stadium on crutches with an ankle complaint.

Adding to Stoke’s misery following their exit from both domestic cups this week, Marc Wilson succumbed to an injury late on at Selhurst Park, which Mark Hughes suggested could be ligament damage. Considering that Ryan Shawcross is also out of action with ongoing back problems, Marc Muniesa (4.2 in the FPL) seems destined to partner Philipp Wollscheid in central defence when the Potters travel to Old Trafford.

Elphick Returns For Much-Changed Cherries

Josh King and Marc Pugh graced the scoresheet as Bournemouth ran out 2-1 victors over Portsmouth. In light of Benik Afobe’s form (two in two) in the lone-striker berth, along with the signing of Lewis Grabban, King’s spell as an out-of-position asset seems at an end. He now looks forced to challenge the likes of Junior Stanislas, Matt Ritchie and Juan Iturbe for starts on the flanks. The latter earned his first start in Saturday’s tie as Eddie Howe continued to ease the Argentine into the first team fold.

On the injury front, Cherries captain Tommy Elphick clocked 76 minutes on his return from ankle surgery – his first start since September. Elphick’s return to contention could now force a shake-up in Howe’s back four, with Adam Smith’s role at right-back under threat. It would seem likely that Simon Francis will revert to full-back, allowing Elphick to return alongside Steve Cook in the centre. Alternatively, it could be Cook who makes way for the club skipper, with Francis and Smith retained. The midweek teamsheet at Palace will offer more clues as to that outcome.

Berahino Brace Not Enough For Baggies

Amid a crescendo of reports regarding a possible transfer this window, Saido Berahino recorded a brace as West Bromwich Albion conceded two late goals against Peterborough United, setting up a replay on the Posh’s home turf. In the event that the 5.8-priced forward fails to seal a transfer to Newcastle United or Tottenham Hotspur, he could yet establish himself as a viable pick-up on the Fantasy market this campaign, given that the Baggies are hardly blessed with alternative attacking riches.

Elsewhere in the West Brom camp, Ben Foster was sidelined due to a minor rib injury, rendering him an early doubt for the West Midlanders’ home encounter against Swansea City on Tuesday.

Liverpool Held In Anfield Bore

Jurgen Klopp enacted 10 changes from the XI that competed in Liverpool’s midweek League Cup clash, welcoming Nathaniel Clyne back from the treatment room whilst handing a start to Dejan Lovren following his return to the bench in midweek. The Reds’ inexperienced side ultimately failed to overcome West Ham United at the first time of asking, adding yet another fixture to their already congested February schedule.

Liverpool’s replay date with West Ham will fall on February 9, finally extinguishing all possibility that their league encounter with Everton from Gameweek 27, postponed due to the Reds’ progress to the Capital One Cup Final, could be shifted forward to Gameweek 25.

West Ham produced an unconvincing performance against the Merseysiders’ fledgling XI, tallying just seven attempts and one shot on target throughout the course of the match-up. Dimitri Payet played the 90 minutes, while Michail Antonio was introduced at the 70-minute mark. James Tomkins and Victor Moses were drafted back into the side, but Adrian (birth of child) and Mark Noble (illness) were unavailable for selection. Tomkins picked up a head injury in the first half which required stitches, while Cheikhou Kouyate followed the defender off the pitch shortly after – both are doubts for Tuesday’s home meeting with Villa.

Does seem weird--maybe Hiddink is more interested in seeing how this particular defensive combo works with the #1 keeper in place.

FA Cup 5th round draw is straight after the Chelsea match, rather than the usual tomorrow (presumably because everyone will be busy tomorrow with transfer deadline day).

Should be some juicy ties with virtually all the big-guns still in the competition.

Hmmm. Things could get very awkward for Manchester City if they get to the FA Cup quarter-finals and land a replay. They really should take the GW25 opportunity while they can. Not sure Newcastle will be too keen on it being early though.

He would really have to do something special. Mahrez is only one goal away from equalling Hazard's record from last season for goals scored.

And Hazard potentially still doesn't have penalties to back him up. Don't see him starting his season FPL wise

Singlehandedly? Yeah, because Costa, Fabregas, Curtois, Matic, Terry didnt have anything to do with it. He had a good season, but people comparing him to Ronaldo and Messi and the likes are having a proper laugh. Just have a look at his international record. Overrated player.

Overrated? Did you actually watch him last season? He would single handidly dribble through entire teams defences. And yes when all those players that you mentioned were in slumps, hazard was single handidly dragging Chelsea to wins. Amazing player.

I did in fact watch in a lot as i watch 90% of televised premier league games. Those players i mentioned didnt have slumps, atleast not bigger slumps than Hazard did. I never said Hazard wasnt a good player. I said hes an overrated player. He had a good season, but amazing players dont have good seasons like the one of last year followed by seasons like this one. Thats the difference between the good players and the truly great ones. Concistency.

Not true, this season was an anomaly, our entire team was dreadful. It wasn't just hazard, something much bigger was going on. Costa and fabregas are also amazing players and they only started playing again since mourinhos left.

Costa isnt an amazing player. Hes a shameless animal that can score a goal. Get it right. Secondly, anomaly you say. If he was truly great, he wouldnt have seasons like this one. Hed superseed his petty differences with Mourinho, whatever they were/are, and perform like a professional. Not to mention that he owes Mourinho a lot for turning him into the player that he is today in the first place. How a team could turn their back on a manager thats won them so much is another thing, thats why Chelsea is proper scum.

Doumbia is beter asa a footballer than Berahino imo but no so sure who will be nailed. Berahino is more likely to be nailed on cuz his move to Toons is permanent and Seidou's move is only till the end of the season... Since I now have Sanchez and Ozil, mine is probably going to be Ozil > Sterling or Silva

I'll be going Wijnaldum though I think.

And I will do Hennessy to Hart

I don't think I will want to dump any of Sanchez, Firmino, Payet or Alli for a City midfielder.

Maybe Butland, Koscielney -> Hart, Otamendi for a -4 and Aguero (TC)

At the minute I have 2 City players and one is KDB.

I could field 4 dgw players for no hit and field strong in GW27.

I never said he was great value at 21 mil. Just that he offered better value to Townsend at 12mil. If you cant understand that simple concept, that's your issue.

I can understand. What you obviously cant seem to grasp is that youre implying that he is in fact good value at £21m just based on the simple fact that Townsend went for £12m. What im suggesting is that youre wrong. Your whole idea of x beeing better value than y just because y was bad value makes no sense.

So by that definition i can buy a bag of crap for 12 bucks, and a much bigger bag of crap for 21 bucks and make the same statement. You dont understand the issue at hand here; You saying Berainho is BETTER value than Townsend IMPLIES that he is in fact GOOD or DECENT value IN THE FIRST PLACE. I highlighted the important words for you, to make it easier. Kind of like a connect the dots thing.

Perspective is a funny thing.

No, he doesn't get into the team cause the Chairman didn't allow him to move and he cried like a baby. If that wasn't the case, he'd be the first one on that sheet.

Hes not good. Hes average, at best. If he was the first name on the teamsheet, why did they set a club record signing Rondon? Berainho has a woeful personality without the talent to back it up, and hes an awful team player. Thats why hes not playing. If you honestly think hes not playing out of spite, then youre really making a poor judgement about business people.

I think we both know who's making a poor judgement about business people when you talk sh1t about a player that a club who aren't exactly rich, are rejecting bids in the mid-20 million pounds region.

What bids did they actually reject? Do you have official sources or is your entire base of knowledge collected from the sports bible and the likes? IF the chairman did reject an offer, its because he thinks the offer was too low. He values the player higher than the money they were offered. Its not that difficult to understand. I also feel pretty confident that said chairman has the brain capacity to comprehend that benching a player would lower the same players value, even if you dont. Meaning spite isnt really that likely to be the reason why Berainho isnt getting games this season.

FA CUP YES OR NO UPDATE

See hot topics for details of the competition.

After Carlisle failed to score against Everton, one person (Dmhomag) out of the 121 entrants goes into the final question with 9 out of 9 so far, and therefore the chance to win FFS membership paid for next season.......

    The final question is....

    10) Will Chelsea win by 2 goals or more at MK Dons?

And Dmhomag has answered this one "Yes".

Final standings will be updated on these boards, and on the website http://tyroreports.wix.com/yesorno tonight.

The Everton win over Carlisle means Liverpool and Everton won't have a DGW before the GW27 blank.

If Everton had lost and Liverpool had lost their replay, they could have rearranged their GW27 match for the FA Cup fifth round weekend (GW26).

Wasn't that confirmed when Liverpool drew with West Ham? The replay is scheduled for the DGW25 slot.

GW25, GW34 and GW37 are the only normal DGW slots. Beyond that, you'll either have to clash with the CL match times (frowned upon and avoided if possible) or you'll have to do two games within a gap of 48/72 hours (like how Chelsea once had Soton at Saturday and a replay with Man Utd on Monday).

I so want Hazard to fire in this game. Just want him over Sanchez due to my Chelsea fan sentiment (ofcourse this will be for nought if City do get DGW25 which forces me to get in Silva)

Hazard is too much of a gamble until he scores in the league.

Won't say "too much of a gamble" considering he replaces De Bruyne who wasn't doing much.

Not PSG. Already conquered Ligue 1.

I never bought the "three rats" propaganda. And Fabregas pretty much proved he wasn't one. I think Hazard can move to RM but with the money that'll rope in we should get someone the quality of James etc in return.

Hazard was the best player in the league last year by a mile, it's a travesty what has happened this year. The form will come back eventually, hope it happens soon

Well he earned a penalty under Hiddink in a sub appearance.

Also was decent-ish against Man Utd despite being badly kicked around all game.

All the out of form players sans Matic have picked up their form under Hiddink, I think he will follow that route.

A punt too far imo when there are safer options. Would rather punt on Sterling.

Don't think Kelechi would play enough minutes in the DGW to justify buying him.
