FA Cup Scout Notes – Fifth Round – Sunday

Dimitri Payet and Emmanuel Emenike both score twice as West Ham ease past Blackburn. Eden Hazard provides a goal and two assists as Chelsea crush an under-strength Man City, whilst Martin Kelly fires Palace into the last eight at Tottenham’s expense.

Payet at the double

Dimitri Payet scored two spectacular goals and grabbed an assist as West Ham United dished out a 5-1 thrashing to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Allied with his 13-point haul last Gameweek, the 8.2-priced midfielder is in fine form ahead of a favourable home clash against Sunderland. That being said, Watford’s triumph over Leeds on Saturday already ensured that the Hornets’ visit to the Boleyn Ground in Gameweek 30 will be postponed, diminishing Payet’s appeal on the Fantasy market – nonetheless, more than 69,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped up the Frenchman ahead of the Black Cats showdown.

Emmanuel Emenike also bagged a brace in his maiden start for the Hammers – given that Enner Valencia (ankle) and Andy Carroll (hip) are nursing knocks, the Nigerian marksman, who is priced at 5.0 in FPL, is likely to lead the line against the Black Cats.

In the wake of an impactful cameo against Norwich City last time out, Victor Moses opened the scoring with a drilled strike. If the fit-again Manuel Lanzini – who was deployed in the 67th minute and went on to card an assist – is handed a starting role next time out, Moses and Michail Antonio look set to compete for a wide berth in Slaven Bilic’s preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up. Antonio filled in at right-back against Blackburn as Joey O’Brien and James Tomkins are injured and Sam Byram is cup-tied, having previously played for Leeds in an earlier round.

Cheikhou Kouyate received his marching orders for denying a goal scoring opportunity, ruling him out of the Sunderland encounter. However, Bilic confirmed post-match that he intends to appeal the decision and believes the Irons can present a strong case.

Spurs slip to defeat

Tottenham Hotspur succumbed to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Crystal Palace. Mauricio Pochettino shuffled the starting XI following their draw at Fiorentina earlier in the week, dropping Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen to the bench.

On the injury front, Hugo Lloris remained sidelined with the shoulder complaint he sustained against Manchester City, while Mousa Dembele was withdrawn at the break with a minor groin problem. Spurs’ last two defeats arrived when the ex-Fulham recruit was hamstrung by injury, so investors in their offense will be hopeful of a swift recovery.

As a consequence of Spurs’ exit from the FA Cup, their road tie against Aston Villa in Gameweek 30 will go ahead as planned. Given that Harry Kane (41% ownership), Alderweireld (42%) and Dele Alli (31%) are among the most popular Fantasy recruits, many managers will find it far easier to cobble together a full team in three weeks’ time.

Kelly wins it for Palace

Martin Kelly steered the Eagles into the quarter finals with a thunderous effort. Wilfried Zaha – who notched two assists in his previous four league starts and netted the winner against Stoke in the Fourth Round – underlined his good form with the assist. Valued at 5.3, the fleet-footed winger could well factor into our thinking for future double Gameweeks.

Yannick Bolasie made a second-half cameo, priming him for a return to league action at West Bromwich Albion next weekend. Nonetheless, his differential potential is curtailed by the fact that Palace’s trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 30 is set to be rescheduled in response to their win over Spurs. On that note, the ownerships of Scott Dann (23%), Chris Smalling (25%) and David De Gea (11%) face the prospect of benching considerable funds during the blank.

Hazard steers Blues to victory

Chelsea put Manchester City to the sword in a 5-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard showed shoots of recovery with a goal and pair of assists, while Diego Costa complemented his assist against Paris Saint-Germain with a goal on Sunday afternoon. Willian, Gary Cahill and Bertrand Traore also graced the scoresheet, with Oscar claiming an assist.

Speaking of Oscar, the Brazil international came up short from the penalty spot for the second time this term, perhaps giving Guus Hiddink food for thought with regards to the Chelsea spot-kick pecking order.

Chelsea’s passage through to the last eight of the FA Cup results in the postponement of their road clash against Liverpool in Gameweek 30. From the Blues’ perspective, Willian is the second-most popular midfielder with regards to transfers in (57,000) this week, while Costa (46,000) is the third-most popular forward, which throws up a dilemma for those new owners. Moreover, Cesar Azpilicueta’s 14% ownership might need to do some tinkering ahead of that date.

The postponement of Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool means that the latter – like Everton – play just twice over the next four Gameweeks. Considering that one of those match-ups is a visit from Manchester City, Roberto Firmino’s 17% ownership will likely be exploring other avenues. On the flip side, both Merseyside clubs will now enjoy two double Gameweeks at some point down the line, which encourages us to keep tabs on the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho following their return from the treatment room.

Pellegrini rings the changes as City tumble out

Manuel Pellegrini made nine alterations for the Sky Blues’ trip to the capital, ensuring that his first team are well rested for the first leg of their Champions League match-up against Dinamo Kiev on Wednesday.

The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany all played no part as the Chilean handed five debutants a chance to impress at the Bridge.

Ultimately, City’s defeat to Chelsea means that their trip to Norwich City in Gameweek 30 remains intact. This will be music to the ears of Aguero’s 30% ownership and may persuade many to hold now – a win for City yesterday would have handed Aguero two blanks in the next four, bearing in mind he already misses out this upcoming weekend due to City’s Capital One Cup final clash with Liverpool.

Actually, there's another theory too, and this is why I mentioned Swansea... that Arsenal play their replay in GW28 (thus blanking that week), and if they win they will play a QF in GW30 and blank again

              8 years, 2 months ago

I heard that also, but I'm not expecting that really. That just puts Ars v Swa in a position where they may have to play on a Euro night, which is not really what anyone wants.

                Ahhh, ok. Thanks.

So if they play a replay on GW30, do they have a delayed QF? Or are you expecting the replay at another time pre-GW30?

I believe so. It's happened before (with Arsenal, ironically) in 2009, so there's a precedent for it.

They may play 8th march but early, not to have a collision with European night. Let say at 5:30 pm.

That is quite common in other european leagues to play like that.

I know it never happened but this year it is different. There is EURO 2016 and you have to finish the league until 15 may, so there is no spare time. If they start to delay planned fixtures it will end up a big mess at the end. like triple GW in 37 and then will have to play every 2 days ( saturday 37, monday - wednsday- sunday38) for example.

If your GW27 team looked like this, would you make any changes or save the FT? 1.0 in the bank.

    -----------------Butland--------------
    --Toby-Azpi-Bellerin-Daniels--
    Payet(c?)-Alli-Sanchez-Mahrez

I don't mind a bench 5th mid, so I wasn't really looking to get rid of Tettey at the moment anyway. Nobody else worth swapping out, though? Sanchez back to Ozil? Ward -> anyone?

I hate having a useless 5th midfielder, they should at least be capable of getting you something when needed.

You could trade Tettey for Lingard 4.3? or potentially even Shelvey 5.3 with all the FA cup blanks coming up?

I'd be 0.1 away from Shelvey, but had considered Lingard with Rooney out. Probably not the move to make ahead of playing Arsenal this GW. Maybe a sneaky luxury transfer if I have 2FTs next GW.

20 man squads.. £125m budget.. Pick 15 to play.

Spurs losing is a real pain for most of us, even if you happen to have 3 Spurs...

As a typical example - a guy in my work (and my mini league) - he's not a complete FPL numpty and knew about the potential GW30 blanks but is doing unexpectedly well this year - the sort of player keeping us out of the top 10k at the moment

He was all set to use his wildcard to get a team out in GW30 but now with Spurs going out he's decided he doesn't need to...

No, he's got 3 Spurs I think. Point is, this sort of situation will be replicated 100ks of times in FPL - lots who would have wasted their wildcard due to lack of planning will now be able to use it for a DGW that many know nothing about yet!

I used to make some effort to deal with them, but not with long term planning, and normally pretty last minute. I didn't even consider myself casual. I thought I was ahead of the game cos I could field 10 while others fielded 8-9.

You don't need to spend a load on your 2nd GK since Courtois will surely start most games for you. Leicester do play Newcastle GW30 though, so Schmeichel is a decent option.

Currently have 8 players for GW30 (&2FT this week) and a front line is Kane-Kun-Lukaku

I'm bringing in Vardy this week and would like your thoughts on:

    A) Straight swap in for Lukaku (obvious move with Eve blank GW30 and City/Spurs playing GW30)

    or

    B) GW 27 Kun to Vardy and play Lukaku against Villa GW 28
GW 29 Lukaku to Kun for the City Villa clash and then have Kun ready for GW30

    Thoughts?

    1. Greek Flair
      • 8 Years

This is my exact question and problem and strangely enough I am also on 8 players for GW 30.

I was leaning towards Lukaku > Vardy in the hope that Aguero still scores against Liverpool and Romelu doesn't.

My worry is that in my mini-league only me and 1 other have Romelu so he is my difference maker

Haha very similar situations indeed. I'm chasing and a good bit behind in my mini-leagues so thinking of changing things up and having a punt on B.....logic does say A though to save FT for future DGW players.

I feel like B, Lukaku (weekend aside) isnt doing enough for me to put him ahead of Vardy. I think Vardy's run of fixtures pretty much makes him the Number One Pick, so the rotation with Kun and Lukaku makes 100% sense to me

Ya I prob would due to his blank GW 30 and you have to have Kun (c) home to Villa.

Thing is if Kun gets injured between now and then (which isn't a crazy thing), then you wouldn't need to make a FT and save,

Kolarov??? No way anyone should consider him with the rotation with Clichy

That's about the size of it. Slot a Soton defender in there while you're at it

I think going by what has been said by filling Leicester, Stoke, Soton, Spurs will cost in the long run. it may help GW30 but you will need a WC to sort out the first DGW. I would definitely have 3 City and have at least 3 from 4 Pool Everton on the bench for double DGW's to come.

I really need to know the DGW plans!

We have seven weeks and plenty of time to plan, but I don't know what I am planning for at present.

I just hope Arsenal don't lose to Hull. If they at least blank there will be some confused casuals wondering what's happening with their Cech-Bellerin-Ozil combo

Try telling my wife that when I told her she does look fat in that dress. Nothing equal about that reaction

So if Arsenal win their replay, GW 34 looks like WBA and Crystal Palace at home.

If they had a decent striker, that would be a tasty triple captain opportunity.

Who would be a better FPL prospect in Swans midfield?
Siggy seems popular here but I do think Ayew looks more goal threatening...Any inputs on who to bring in??

Blimey, Arsenal's fixture congestion is looking pretty hectic.
