Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 27

Pedro is ruled out of Chelsea’s trip to Norwich with a hamstring injury. Man United and Liverpool face more problems in defence, whilst Leicester wait for news on their midfield dynamo ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with the Baggies.

Bournemouth
Junior Stanislas lasted just 23 minutes of the Cherries goalless draw against Watford before being withdrawn due to a hamstring complaint. After the match, Eddie Howe went on to say:

“It appears to be a hamstring which is a real blow for us. Junior has been outstanding for us this season, a real creative force and it came out of nothing. He had said he felt really good in the build-up to the game. It was just one of those things so we will have to get it scanned to see how long he will be out.”

Stanislas’ injury allowed the fit-again Max Gradel to emerge from the bench, signaling the end of his six-month injury absence. Gradel bagged three assists in his final two league outings before sustaining a knee problem in late August and bearing in mind that Matt Ritchie is Bournemouth’s top player for assists, with just four, the Ivorian looks likely to be unleashed from the start in the midweek home clash with Southampton.

Chelsea
Pedro was forced off with just seven minutes on the clock during the Blues’ win at Southampton yesterday. Post-match, Guus Hiddink conceded that the Spaniard could be sidelined until the Blues’ FA Cup clash with Everton on March 12:

“Pedro has got a problem with his hamstrings. We have a tight schedule now, Norwich on Tuesday then we have Stoke and then PSG and then the Everton game. (He is) very short on the Everton game, I think he might be fit at that time but I don’t know.”

Pedro’s absence looks set to hand Oscar a chance to return to Guus Hiddink’s starting line-up for the midweek trip to Norwich. Having missed the 5-1 home win over Newcastle due to injury, the Brazilian was afforded an 83-minute run-out as the Spaniard’s replacement at the weekend and seems in line to line up alongside Eden Hazard and Willian in the attacking midfield spots behind Diego Costa at Carrow Road.

Crystal Palace
The Eagles are sweating over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye after the playmaker limped off with just over 10 minutes remaining of yesterday’s 3-2 loss to West Brom.

Leicester
Claudio Ranieri is optimistic that N’Golo Kante will recover from a hamstring problem in time for the Foxes’ home match against West Brom:

“I don’t know now (how serious it is) we will check tomorrow (Sunday) morning. I hope it is not so long because he is important. But King replaced him very, very well. He felt something to his hamstring. He always felt something and we manage him during the training sessions. I think it is nothing serious.”

A possible absence for Kante could be a big blow to the Foxes as they look to rack up a seventh straight clean sheet at the King Power as West Brom roll up in midweek. Kante sits top amongst midfielders for successful tackles and interceptions and is placed third for recoveries, underlining his importance to their defensive cause.

Liverpool
The Reds’ centre-half Mamadou Sakho was replaced with just 25 minutes on the clock after coming off worse in a clash of heads with team-mate Emre Can.

If Sakho is ruled out against City in midweek, Jurgen Klopp could be forced to field makeshift centre-back pairing Lucas and Kolo Toure if the Merseysiders’ injury situation fails to ease, boosting Sergio Aguero’s armband prospects at Anfield.

Man United
In his first start since Gameweek 13, Marcos Rojo lasted just 55 minutes before being forced off with an ankle issue against Arsenal this afternoon. Post-match, Louis van Gaal went on to say:

“I don’t think it is serious; it was a kick. We have to wait and see, of course. It was also a good position that I gave him the first minutes to play. My plan was already 60 minutes. He didn’t reach the 60 minutes because of the kick.”

Rojo’s injury adds to Van Gaal’s injury problems, though the performance of replacement Tim Fosu-Mensah at left-back suggests that the teenager may well get the nod at home to Watford in midweek if the Argentine fails to recover. With Chris Smalling absent due to a shoulder injury, though, United have now kept just a single shut-out in five, with Van Gaal forced to field Michael Carrick alongside Daley Blind at centre-half against the Gunners.

Norwich
Canaries boss Alex Neil revealed that Seb Bassong and Wes Hoolahan are big doubts for the midweek encounter against Chelsea after both missed the trip to Leicester with problems picked up in training:

“The two weren’t ready. They were carrying wee knocks. It is touch and go for Tuesday. We’ll have to monitor that over the next day or two.”

Watford
Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores revealed that Etienne Capoue was withdrawn before the hour-mark due to fatigue, as the schedule continues to pick up pace:

“Capoue is a very important player for us but he has played nearly every minute. I felt he was a little bit tired. He wasn’t clear in his mind and wasn’t choosing (the right options) well. It isn’t normal for Capoue but it’s possible (he was tired) Tomorrow we will talk with him but I have no worries about him.”

West Brom
The Baggies are sweating over Chris Brunt’s fitness after the Irishman was stretchered off during yesterday evening’s 3-2 win over Palace. Post-match, Tony Pulis bemoaned a potential injury to yet another key first-team player:

“We’re concerned about him. Looks as though he’s done something to the knee joint. We won’t know until tomorrow we’re hoping it’s not serious because we need Brunty in the team. He gives us balance on that side. Without Brunty, James Morrison and Jonny Evans they’re three big players for us and make us play. They’re good footballers and we need those in the team. I don’t know whether it was a foul a free-kick or whatever, but I know he was in pain when he came off. Until you scan it I just don’t know.”

Our play is actually a joke right now, for a few weeks now we aren't moving the ball up the pitch quickly enough, slowly building up at the back but never getting much going forward. There was a point when Bellerin was running up the right and then he just stopped and passed it back.

No urgency at this time of the season is unforgivable, when I saw the team sheets yesterday I couldnt see us not winning that game (Carrick and Blind centre back etc) but they were so comfortable because we didnt put any pressure on them at all

          Me neither.

Head says Vardy. I got him in for this captaincy run of games.

RMT and my dullard gene tells me Ozil - and that is ALWAYS right when it comes to Ozil captaincy.

          Heart says Aguero.

      Since you post often,

I would have suggested getting Kompany in, because he has great fixtures, but your defence is great. Because of that I would consider Hennessey to Hart in GW29.

GW29 - Play Hart (Spurs play Arsenal)
      GW30 - Play Hart
      GW31 - Play Lloris
GW32 - Play Hart (Spurs play Liverpool)

Whereas if you had Hennessey you would have to play GW29 v Liverpool and GW32 v Leicester.

Maybe you don't like spending the extra on a GK, but you have loads itb and Hart could be worth an extra 12 points.

I had actually been looking at Hart a while ago.. Forgot about him! Kompany is a great option but he's just too injury prone for my liking, prefer not to be switching around my defence at this stage of the season that much..

Hennessey -> Hart could well be the answer to how I should spend my extra funds, thanks for the thoughts tinman 🙂 much appreciated!

I know - just been researching the stats as well. They did everything they could to break the curse - and yet it couldn't be broken. That Dembele is pure magic.

With Eriksen I can see how Fabianski kept them out. A good goalie should be able to deal with shots out of the box. But with Kane that was pure magic. There simply is no explanation other than that Dembele is a wizard.

Of course. But the point I made was in respone to the Hot Topic post. Spurs not getting more goals was not for a lack of trying. It was because of Fabianski's amazing display. 4 save points, maximum bonus and second-highest score in the game for a Keeper who lost 2-1 is pretty amazing

Fabianski had the game of his life. Both Kane and even more so, Eriksen had shots on target that on another day would have ended up in the back of the net. The offside goal was very tight as well

        Hi Jonty,

I applaud your nuance with stats and see how they affect team strategy. Your postulated theory of the Dembele effect looks credible and proven. In order to extrapolate and make this theory into Law, is there a way you can help FFS members on the Dembele's effect on each of the premier league teams. For instance:
        -Spurs = Dembele

        - ManCity = Kompany

        - Stoke = Shawcros

Are there any Dembeles in other teams e.g. Sou, Sun, WBA, ManU etc?

i think that'll be interesting and will no doubt help the community. Will appreciate if other FFS moderators and writers also look into this. Many thanks

a cursory glance at the games when Mousa is missing or has small amounts of game time seems to show that the opposition keeper was getting at least 1 bonus save points.

Ah well, this is what's stopping me, i have it all planned, i have to take a -4pt hit really to field 11 for GW30 so my plan was Ighalo > Kun to be honest, i need to lose 3 players to have 11 for GW30, so have to take a hit somewhere along the line 🙂

Wenger messed Sanchez up with the injury and the defensive responsibilities.

This too. So does this mean he's no longer a FPL prospect and we should abandon ship?

I'm actually thinking of doing the same.

Sanchez makes me feel like a gambler who keeps losing but just can't stop. Double or quits. I'm now on to pay day loans...

Hmmm some tough decisions this gw, but not too bad.

    Butland

    Huth VvD Ivanovic
    Payet Mahrez (c) Alli Ozil
    Kane Vardy(vc) Kun

    Elliot Gylfi Bellerin Alder

Any thoughts? Would appreciate it 🙂

1 FT left with 2.1itb would most likely save, but just throwing it out there.

Well yea, that Arnie C would have been the deal 😛 In any case, he has a really good team as well and we have a lot of the same players, so kinda hard to make ground up.

No transfers needed but not sure about playing VVD over Bellerin!

I do think they will concede in all honesty and win 3-1 or 2-1. I believe VvD has higher goal threat, thats about it and maybe higher CS chance.

In the space of 2 gameweeks I've cut the gap between me and 1st in my ML from 76 to 13!! Ideal.

Surely I should bank the transfer with what I have here?

    Butland, Schmeichel
    VVD, Rose, Bellerin, S.Taylor, Williams
    Payet, Ozil, Mahrez, Alli, Arnie
    Aguero, Vardy, Kane.

    Bench?
    A) Butland
    B) Schmeichel

    Bench two.
    1) Rose
    2) Taylor
    3) Williams

Rose got points this week, but i would rather have someone more nailed. Taylor is also useless.

If you don't want to use transfer then start Rose and hope he plays (Williams ahead of Taylor on the bench)

Yeah I know its not the perfect team but banking a transfer would be suitable this week IMO I feel Rose will be benched this week but hopefully his goal makes Poch think twice, I fear my benched defenders if Rose misses out both could be in for poor point scores

      Butland (Forster)
      VVD, Fuchs, Bellerin (Toby, Daniels)
      Mahrez, Ozil, Alli, Arnie (Payet)
      Aguero, Vardy, Kane

      2 FT & 1.3 ITB

Don't really want to let a transfer go to waste?

It bugs me when people say player x was only denied by a great display from the keeper. Why is that different to being denied by a great display from the centre back? Keepers are well paid for their services, its up to the attackers to be more clinical

    1. Prøphet
      • 8 Years

Because some other keeper in EPL could have let those goals in. Great saves are great saves, not matter who does it.

Please consider the context in which the conversation is being had. We are having a discussion about whether Spurs attacking prowess is being affected by Dembele's absence. The keeper thing has been mentioned to show that it was not Dembele's absence rather Fabianski's heroics that stopped those stats from being converted to more goals

i was talking in general, people seem to think its lucky when the keeper plays well rather than the finishing not being accurate enough
