Captain Sensible – Gameweek 36

Next up this Friday, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and analyse the captaincy conundrum ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. As usual, we delve into the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez leads the pack by some distance in the Gameweek 36 Captain Poll.

At home to a Norwich side with a single clean sheet on their travels all season, the Chilean has earned over 45% of the votes cast so far. Despite failing to get amongst the points in Sunday’s goalless draw at Sunderland, Sanchez has scored or assisted in seven of his last eight outings and has earned 39 points in his previous three at the Emirates.

Sergio Aguero is some way behind in second spot. Although he got amongst the goals at home to Stoke last week, the Argentine’s 69th-minute withdrawal against the Potters prior to last Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg with Real Madrid has persuaded just 11% to hand him the armband for a trip to St Mary’s, bearing in mind the return leg in Spain is three days later.

Romelu Lukaku (8%) takes third spot for Everton’s home match against Bournemouth. Granted, the Belgian has no form to speak of – having drawn blanks in each of his last five in the league – but a total of seven efforts in last week’s cup loss to United at least suggests his threat is on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge is backed by only 4% due to concerns over Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet for Liverpool’s trip to Swansea. The England international was an unused sub in the first leg in Spain last night, though, which perhaps bodes well for his domestic minutes as he looks to continue a fine recent record of five goals and two assists in six league outings.

Despite scoring eight times in the last seven, Harry Kane earns just 2% of votes for Tottenham’s trip to Chelsea. The Blues have just one clean sheet in ten – against Villa – though if Leicester clinch the league at Old Trafford the day before, there would be major question marks over Spurs’ morale at the Bridge.

Elsewhere, West Ham duo Dimitri Payet and Andy Carroll could be overlooked options for the trip to West Brom. Payet has four double-figure hauls on his travels already – including two in his last four – whilst Carroll’s aerial threat could thrive from the Frenchman’s delivery against the Baggies as he seeks to extend his run of six goals in the last five league matches.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

We begin by breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches in order to shed a little more light on the situation.

    1. Sakho -> Smalling or PvA? (doubling up either way)
    2. KDB -> Payet this week or next? (smalling only affordable if I do this)
    3. Do both of the above for a hit
    4. Do none of the above, save the FT.

For 4, other potential doubts in the squad are gabriel, aguero, firmino and KDB.

    Alright guys, last 3 GWs..

I've got 3 Liverpool players as of now (1FT, willing to take a -8 hit if i pays)
    My concerns now :
    1) I've got both coutinho and fiminho as of now, both unlikely to play this gw and possible rotation next gw.
    2) Sakho banned (I'm planning for All Out Attack in GW 37)
    3) Kane looking burned out and mitrovic if not in the starting lineup, planning to replace them with Sturridge and caroll.. Good idea?

Basically (a) should I keep coutinho or firminho? (Looking to replace one of them with Lanzini or Townsend...better option?
    (b) Kane and mitrovic ---> sturridge and carrol?

Disagree, Cesc is a decent shout. Different player than he was earlier in the season.

Worth tripling up with WHM players? already have Lanzini will get Payet, will I get Cresswell or PVA.
          other defenders
          Bellerin / Rose / Simpson

I would wait with that hit for a defender one more week maybe and play the 3 you have.
If you have the funds, go Cresswell, if you find yourself in need to get a more pressing upgrade, go PVA.

On a similar boat (considering A,C, no alli). Don't think all of them are necessary, would do alli->payet (if affordable), plus c (PVA) only if necessary to get 3 decent defenders out.

This is the last decision I have to make too.

Currently on Darlow as Newcastle seem to have got it together in terms of their defence and Palace are poor away.

Robles is good, but the defence is in ruins on various hospital wards or naughty steps. Plus Bournemouth offer a significant goal threat, especially Josh King.

I think both may concede, but Everton are more likely to.

Looks like my post was missed on the last page. So here we go again.

Folks, Please rate this team for a Wild Card now and BB in GW37

    Mignolet - Gomes
    Smalling-Cresswell-PVA-Olsson-Monreal
    Sanchez-Hazard-Payet-Brady-Eriksen
    Lukaku-Defoe-Deeney

Change Deeney to Carroll or Lukaku to Sturridge based on performance in 36 and few other factors

Please feel free to criticize and suggest improvements.

    1. Idea behind playing Eriksen is to have spurs coverage and the fact that he'll play in the central role
    2. Don't want to touch any Liverpool or City attackers due to cup distractions. Is it a very big risk?

Coutinho>Payet done. Guaranteed starter and the player I've always had in mind for TC duty next week.

Still got Milner and Lovren but I'm happy with them.

What is the better transfer for a hit?

    A) Alli + Sakho -> Lanzini+Cresswell
    B) Coutinho+Mitrovic -> Lanzini+Sturridge

To me A) makes sense because Alli+Sakho are definitely not going to play for the rest of the season but I feel like B) has the better potential for a high score this week. Then again it is possible that Coutinho gets good minutes in the DGW if Liverpool is knocked out of the Europa league. What do you think?
