Captain Sensible – Gameweek 36

Next up this Friday, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and analyse the captaincy conundrum ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. As usual, we delve into the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez leads the pack by some distance in the Gameweek 36 Captain Poll.

At home to a Norwich side with a single clean sheet on their travels all season, the Chilean has earned over 45% of the votes cast so far. Despite failing to get amongst the points in Sunday’s goalless draw at Sunderland, Sanchez has scored or assisted in seven of his last eight outings and has earned 39 points in his previous three at the Emirates.

Sergio Aguero is some way behind in second spot. Although he got amongst the goals at home to Stoke last week, the Argentine’s 69th-minute withdrawal against the Potters prior to last Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg with Real Madrid has persuaded just 11% to hand him the armband for a trip to St Mary’s, bearing in mind the return leg in Spain is three days later.

Romelu Lukaku (8%) takes third spot for Everton’s home match against Bournemouth. Granted, the Belgian has no form to speak of – having drawn blanks in each of his last five in the league – but a total of seven efforts in last week’s cup loss to United at least suggests his threat is on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge is backed by only 4% due to concerns over Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet for Liverpool’s trip to Swansea. The England international was an unused sub in the first leg in Spain last night, though, which perhaps bodes well for his domestic minutes as he looks to continue a fine recent record of five goals and two assists in six league outings.

Despite scoring eight times in the last seven, Harry Kane earns just 2% of votes for Tottenham’s trip to Chelsea. The Blues have just one clean sheet in ten – against Villa – though if Leicester clinch the league at Old Trafford the day before, there would be major question marks over Spurs’ morale at the Bridge.

Elsewhere, West Ham duo Dimitri Payet and Andy Carroll could be overlooked options for the trip to West Brom. Payet has four double-figure hauls on his travels already – including two in his last four – whilst Carroll’s aerial threat could thrive from the Frenchman’s delivery against the Baggies as he seeks to extend his run of six goals in the last five league matches.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

We begin by breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches in order to shed a little more light on the situation.

What are you doing with Aguero and your Arsenal players GW37 (Manchester City - Arsenal) not good fixture but what, bench or sell?
    A) Aguero
    B) Sanchez
    C) Bellerín
    D) Gabriel
    E) Ozil or other

Im playing Aguero. Benching Bellerin. Taking a cheeky Sanchez -> Hazard (c) gamble for DGW37 and getting Sanchez back to captain vs Villa in GW38

    A) Cathcart (AVL, liv, nor) or
    B) Kirchoff (sto, EVE, CHE)?

    Crazy fact

Since Leicester beat York for the right to house the remains of King Richard III in March 2015 York have dropped out of the Football League whilst Leicester have avoided relegation from, and now stand on the verge of winning, the Premier League

Just taken an 8 point hit. I dip 2,000 ranking places, but far happier with some certain starters.

Mitrovic, Coutinho, Alli out - Payet, Fabregas and Defoe in.

This dullard is full of anticipation of the boring assist points Fabregas will earn me through corners. 🙂 He's the Spanish Milner!

I like both as they do what they are meant to do. Fab makes goals, Defoe scores goals. They have a double, seem nailed on too.

During the first half of the season I was actually quite maverick - which is why I did so badly. Pedro was among those players I got in to be different.

I'm sticking to the devils I know for the run in.

The 0.1 out in getting Carroll, Payet and Fabregas took the decision out of my hands.

Basically having Lanzini would mean I'd have to choose between Payet and Carroll. While West Ham have good fixtures I'm not keen on trebling up on the attack potential. I'm happy with Payet, but if I didn't have him I'd go Carroll.

Security of starts bothers me less about Carroll as he's a great impact sub.

      good moves

you are tempting me with Cesc over Hazard I already have Payet and Defoe

I can afford Cesc or Pedro this week for -4. If I want Hazard I have to wait till next week and do -8

If Hazard goes goal crazy against Spurs and I don't get any more suspensions (alli and Sakho in one week really hurt) I'll do Sanchez to Hazard (tc) then get Sanchez back again for GWK 38.

I don't rule him out - but I want to see one more game to see if Bou was a blip.

Good, shares corners etc with Fabregas. Got a good free kick on him. Worrying lack of starts though and rumours that he is being courted by China don't help. Hiddink is focusing on playing players that will be there next season. I'm not sure he will be.

Anyway it's a question mark and after the last few weeks rotation etc I can do without any more question marks over players.

May bench him. I'm fairly certain he won't start but also certain that if that's the case he'll come on. I think I'll go with Lanzini instead. I wanted to keep Firmino though as I think he'll get significant minutes over the double with the Europa semi final out the way.

I've also done MIt/Ali for Pay/Def for any number of reasons. Security, quality, ML covering...

Toying with a further hit for Gomes or Adrian for Migs - don't like Hen as backup, even worried he may get rested and think Newcastle will score.

Migs is 99.9% not starting so Hennessey will play.

Personally I think getting Gomes in will pay for itself over GWK 35 and 36. He is save machine.

Hmmm, possible. But I'd say unlikely. There's no reason to rest a goalkeeper really and he's in such good form that it wouldn't make much sense.

        That was the original plan.

Think I should just get Firmino anyway even if he might not start? Bench and start Pedro instead. That would probably be better. Saves me a transfer too.

        What would you rather?

        A) Sturridge + Lukaku + Olsson

        B) Defoe + Kane + Bellerin

Lukaku would only be for GW 36 against Bournemouth...

Thinking Coutinho > Payet, Alli > Wilian, Mitro > Carroll leaving 0TB and no subs for defenders unless Gabriel starts to play more. Alternatives would be to bring in Van Aanolt or Cresswell if possible.

    Current Team/Squad:

    Darlow (Robles)

If Real knock City out of the CL does Aguero play 90 against Arsenal 4 days later?

Got this lined up: Coutinho, Mitro + Aguero to Payet, Carroll and Sturridge for a -8.

Push the button, yay or nay?
