Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 37 – The Defence

In the first of a two-part series, we examine the opportunities presented by those teams with a pair of Gameweek 37 fixtures and assess the potential on offer.

We begin with an analysis of the defensive options on show, scanning the eight double Gameweek teams and seeking out the most assured sources of clean sheets and attacking points.

The eight teams in question are neatly divided with half facing away trips, while the other four – Liverpool, West Ham, Sunderland and Norwich – provide us with two home fixtures. That quartet present the most obvious starting point when hunting clean sheets.

Ordinarily, the Liverpool defence would be in our thinking ahead of two Anfield meetings. Jurgen Klopp’s charges face Watford and Chelsea at home – both teams with little or no motivation – and then follow that up with a final day trip to West Brom.

Sadly, with Klopp hellbent on fielding weakened sides around Europa League ties, we have to consider Simon Mignolet (5.0) and his ever-changing back four as risks.

Given Mamadou Sakho’s suspension, Dejan Lovren (4.8) appears elevated as the most assured starter over the Reds’ remaining fixtures, while Alberto Moreno (4.8) is the gamble which could pay off given his recent run of form – the Spaniard has finally sparked to life to register a goal and three assists in his last three league starts.

However, with the threat of rotation and Liverpool’s home record of just five shutouts in 17 outings, it seems wise to overlook the Reds’ rearguard.

West Ham’s back four has only fared slightly better in front of their own fans, earning six clean sheets at Upton Park. They will be looking to leave their old stadium in some style and with an unlikely Champions League spot still within reach, they will be driven to earn results.

Fixtures with Swansea City and Manchester United show promise – both struggle for a cutting edge away from home. The Swans have blanked in their last two trips, while United have notched just once in their last three.

West Ham also have two standout options in Adrian (5.1) between the sticks and Aaron Cresswell (5.7) at left-back. Both offer the opportunity of supplementary points should they ship goals, with Adrian boasting strong save point potential, while Cresswell is a forward-thinking full-back who has claimed a goal and an assist in his last four.

When it comes to the motivation factor, no Gameweek 37 sides can compete with Sunderland or Norwich City. The relegation threatened pair are locked in a three-way tussle with Newcastle and are strictly in the results business.

The loss of Timm Klose to a knee injury was a huge blow to the Canaries and robbed us of the one sure-fire candidates in Alex Neil’s backline. Russell Martin (4.2) now looks to be the only secure option available offering at least some goal threat for crucial Carrow Road meetings with Manchester United and Watford.

Sunderland have more viable options plus an improved defensive record that has seen them ship just three goals in their last five league outings.

Vito Manonne (4.3) is a cat-like stopper who can reap save points from their two Stadium of Light meetings with Chelsea and Everton. Patrick van Aanholt (4.7) is the star turn, though – the raiding Dutchman has five goals to his name and has rattled in more attempts than any other defender in the league.

Of the four teams facing a pair of away trips, it’s presumed that Manchester United offer the most potential.

Louis van Gaal’s defence has proved resolute throughout a largely unconvincing campaign, although they’ve gained 12 of their 17 shut-outs at Old Trafford. Indeed, both Everton and Chelsea – two of the other Gameweek 37 sides to be considered – boast a superior away record when it comes to shut-outs.

With testing trips to West Ham and Norwich – both teams who will be highly motivated to earn three points – we’re having to lean towards David de Gea (5.9) as the weapon of choice within United’s squad, with save points as back-up. While Chris Smalling (6.5) offers an alternative, we’re far from certain on United’s clean sheet credentials over their two fixtures. The one caveat is that United face Bournemouth on the final day, boosting Smalling’s stock.

While Everton have a decent away record with seven clean sheets on the road, injuries have ravaged Roberto Martinez’ backline and the confidence has gradually seeped from the Toffees as the season draws to a conclusion. Leighton Baines blinked on the radar with his winner over Bournemouth last weekend but would represent a real gamble given his lofty 6.0 price tag.

Chelsea appear a stronger option, particularly with John Terry and Gary Cahill re-installed in central defence. That appears to free up Branislav Ivanovic (6.6) to return to right-back and offer us at least some attacking potential for away trips to Sunderland and Liverpool. The Serb has the edge over Cesar Azpicueletta given his set-piece threat – a clear factor given shut-outs at the Stadium of Light and Anfield look a stretch for Guus Hiddink’s men.

Watford are the final team on offer – a side with little to play for, blighted by dismal end of season form and seemingly unsettled by speculation over Quique Sanchez Flores’ future as manager. That, combined with an ever-changing back-four, tells you all you need to know on our attitude towards Hornets assets, although the telescopic charm of Heurelho Gomes (5.1) remains in our thinking.

The Brazilian is the top-ranked stopper in the Fantasy Premier League and may just benefit from a second-string Liverpool and a demoralised Norwich to earn his owners profit.

The Top Targets

Aaron Cresswell – the Hammers have arguably the strongest chance of delivering shut-outs over the Gameweek. Cresswell has a threat from range and will be a ready supplier of crosses aimed in the vicinity of the highly effective Andy Carroll.

Patrick van Aanholt – the left-back’s attacking prowess is key to his appeal as a desperate Sunderland go in search of crucial wins. With direct free-kicks added to his armoury of late, the Dutchman looks a key target.

David de Gea – while United’s clean sheet prospects will be stretched by a pair of testing fixtures, it ensures that the Spaniard will be called upon to replicate the form that has been pivotal in earning 17 shut-outs this term.

The Differentials

Heurelho Gomes – the eccentric stopper has starred throughout for the Hornets and is the only real secure option for their Gameweek 37 double. Save points could be key and he always offers the potential to add to his three penalty saves this term.

Branislav Ivanovic – back at full-back now that Terry and Cahill have returned, the pricey Serb just edges out Azpicueletta as the chief Blues’ contender. An expensive gamble that seems likely to rely on attacking returns.

Russell Martin – the injury to Andre Wisdom looks set to ensure that the Canaries club skipper will start the final three fixtures. His presence at set-plays on the end of measured Robbie Brady deliveries may yet prove crucial and profitable.

Leighton Baines – the mop-top left-back rekindled our flames with a winner at the weekend and, amidst a broken back four, offers the most secure starter with attacking to flair thrown in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Let's have a little debate. I've got a new opinion on this question, so I want to know what you guys think:

Who is the best striker in the world?

My current answer would be Antoine Griezmann. He carries that Atletico offense singlehandedly, with little to no support in UCL games. He's clinical and puts it in the net whenever Atletico manage to break forward. He's not spoon-fed all game by other attacking stars, he does all the work to get this team across the line with a win.

Lead to the title, didn't win it. 😉 He did have good attacking support on that team with Gerrard, Sturridge, and Sterling though.

Gerrard, Sturridge and Sterling are good players, but remember that Griezeman is not exactly without support, even if it looks that way against possession-kings Bayern.

He does have decent support with the likes of Koke, Gabi and such, but they're deep lying midfielders that play balls in to him to do the rest. He doesn't necessarily have an attacking mid or actual wingers (Saul and Koke on the wings) sometimes.

The same Sterling you were calling piss poor yesterday? I still rate Sterling, and obviously Sturridge, but Suarez made that Liverpool side 20-30 goals better than they were without him.

This is something I credit at least part of to Suarez and for me it makes him that step above Aguero. I think when Suarez is on the pitch he requires so much attention it makes everybody around him look better.

Although I think Griezeman is a fantastic talent, Suarez has proven over and over again how lethal a player he is. Not just at Barcelona, where his record is incredible, but at Liverpool, where he didn't have the likes of Messi and Neymar to play with.

I figured this would be most people's answers. I just really respect how Griezmann drags this ultra-defensive team past the line all the time. He needs to be more clinical than any other striker because he'll only get one to two clear cut chances in a match.

I know a lot of people say Suarez, but I think Aguero has a much more lethal shot on him. Most other attributes they are pretty similar in, but another thing Aguero has going for him is that turn of pace when he picks up the ball on the wings.

Griezmann is a great forward but behind both of those in almost every single attribute imo

Lethal shot? The range of goals Suarez score outweigh Aguero. His workrate, his ability to go past people, his link up play, his finishing, his set piece play. All above the quality of Aguero.

they have both been dropped. Bazoer had been poor the last few games and it didn't appear that he was trying that hard, but he's still only 19 so he will come good again. El-Ghazi has been poor since back from injury, maybe lacking in confidence, not sure if he will become a great. In any case Younes & Cerny are looking really good as the wingers.

Still need to invest this summer as need some experience. Hopefully Huntelaar will come back!

Athletico Madrid are not as ultra-defensive as you think....Athletico Madrid are one of the top 3 clubs in the world imo. Griezzman is a top 5 striker for me but I rate Suarez , Ronaldo and Messi . He is on par with Bale for me.

Theyre definitely top 3, but that's a result of the way they play. It's a style of play that doesn't favor the striker, and yet Griezmann does so well.

"It's a style of play that doesn't favor the striker" ...and yet Athletico Madrid keep on producing world class strikers one after another....also Torres looking world class again AS well....

They were producing top class strikers before Simeone came along with the new play style. Maybe this style requires the strikers to be more clinical, and therefore the strikers are better. The system doesn't benefit them though.

Theyre not ultra defensive. But theyre really defensive. Very much alike Leicester. And theyre not top 3 either. I do kinda agree with Griezman beeing on par with Bale tho.

And I'm sure you've got Ibra in there somewhere. I'm not buying into hype. Based on the system he plays in and how clinical he has to be, I think he has to do so much more than any other striker.

The system and how clinical? He plays striker for a super solid defensive counterattacking team. Thats equivalent to saying Jamie Vardy is top 3 strikers in the BPL. Im not sure if i rate Ibra amongst the top 5. Probably not. But id rather have him than Griezman.

Thats all fair, but saying Vardy and Griezmann are better strikers when theyre not cus they play for "inferiour teams" doesnt make any sense. Also you just labelled AM as top 3 teams worldwide, that doesnt really correlate well with your previous assesment.

I still don't get what you mean. Atletico are top three because their system is effective. Their system is effective because Griezmann grabs the goals and everyone else locks up on defense. Without Griezmann you're looking at a team that draws 0-0 a lot.

                    1. TeamSteam

That in it self doesnt make Atletico top 3 in the world or Griezmann top 3 in the world. Again, thats like saying Jamie Vardy is top 3 in the BPL just cus the system hes playing in suits him. If thats the basis of valuation of players, then literally anyone can be top 3 by default.

Atletico is a pretty solid club. I have huge admiration what they accomplish with such inferior funds compared to Barca and Real. And its not like im saying Griezmann isnt good. Hes just not top 3. No way, no how.

Not sure about starting Fosu-Mensah. Simpson & Bellerin could easily play more minutes despite United having 2 games and a 10/15 minute cameo in either game would rule out them coming on as an autosub.

Don't get a differential just for the heck of getting a differential.

Costa is a good option, but Haz is in great form.

I see you all in the next season. This has been an incredible season, Leicester just overwrote the history books, this is a story to tell and it will never be forgotten. Would love to see a movie about it(probably Danny Boyle could make something nice out of it:)) In the fantasy football league I would like to see the guy who's number 1 now to win it, such an impressive score and still BB and WC to be used! and that's his first season, incredible! As to me, I cocked it up, around 60000 at the moment, so hopefully will do better next term. I am not a regular chatter, specially when things go wrong I prefer not to log in here:)) So see you in july or so:)

Looking at everyone taking hits this gameweek and here I'm thinking of saving the FT...

    DDG Gomes
    Bellerin Smalling Azpilicueta Cresswell PVA
    Sanchez Hazard Payet Milner Lanzini
    Kane Lukaku Defoe

Is there something you would do with the FT.... I really don't wanna lose KANE and just don't see anything plausible apart from Kane going out... Maybe Bellerin but for who? And then they have villa last game of the season....

You wildcarded in 36 and not 33, like most. So you shouldn't have to take hits. You've ostensibly set up your team FOR this week.

    Who to bench:

    A) Noble
    B) Payet
    C) Mahrez
    D) Sanchez
    E) Firmino
    F) Aguero
    G) Kane
    H) Carroll

    Currently on Sanchez

Yeah it's difficult, Mahrez is normally better away from home and Leicester now have nothing to play for, except they'll want to play well as champions in front of their fans. Man City and Arsenal are both still fighting for position so could be some goals in that, or equally could be 0-0...

    Bench one:

True. But in defence Antonio gets 1pt from CS. So will give me appr 5 pts from 2 matches. Been faithful to Mahrez through season, even when RMT told me to bench, and it payed out. Bit scared to fail at the last moment. Am 8 and 14 pts behind 1. and 2. in the ML. But yes it is a very good point. Is he guaranteed start?

Urgh, that's tough. Fair enough but I'd be tempted to play sanchez over mahrez personally. I know that seems like an equally crazy idea but just a hunch. Any other game townsend would be the obvious bench choice but guess can't with them playing villa.

1 FT. 5.4 in the bank. TC available.

    DDG
    Bellerin - Rojo - Morgan
    Lanzini - Coutinho - KdB - Sanchez
    Martial - Defoe - Sturridge

    Migs - Mahrez - Gabriel - Simpson

    I'm looking at
    Simpson -> Cresswell/Chelsea DEF
KdB -> Haz. No Payet is fine by me.
Defoe -> Carroll a bit too much for -8 in total?

    Robles
    Delaney - PVA - Simpson
Payet (TC) - Firmino - Coutinho - Lanzini
    Agüero - Kane - Defoe

    Darlow, Sánchez, Bellerín, Gabriel
    1FT, 2.0m itb

    Thinking:
    Delaney > Cresswell

Contemplating losing Coutinho to a Chelsea mid for a -4... (Can't afford Haz with Cress move so thinking Willian)

Also would you start Bellerín or Simpson?
