Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Northern Ireland

Next up in our analysis of the Group C contenders is Northern Ireland. Michael O’Neill’s men start their tournament by squaring up to Poland on Sunday June 12 at 5pm before going up against Ukraine four days later at 5pm and group favourites Germany at 5pm on Tuesday, June 21.

Road to Qualification

O’Neill’s underdogs arrive in France as winners of Group F in qualifying, winning six and drawing three of their ten fixtures in a table that also hosted the likes of Romania, Hungary and Greece. Regardless, Northern Ireland struggled to impress in the final third – they scored just 16 times, with five of those arriving in a pair of clashes against the Faroe Islands.

It was a similar story at the back, with Ireland mustering just three clean sheets and conceding in six of their final seven fixtures.

The rank outsiders have played four friendlies over the past 12 months, winning three times and drawing once, with just a single goal conceded. This includes 1-0 victories over Latvia and Slovenia and a 1-1 stalemate with Wales prior to Sunday’s 3-0 triumph over Belarus.

In terms of tactics, O’Neill isn’t afraid to tinker with his formation in accordance with his team’s opponents and has employed 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-1-4-1 and 3-5-2 set-ups over the qualifiers and in recent friendlies.

Most Appearances Gareth McAuley, Oliver Norwood (10), Conor McLaughlin, Chris Baird, Steven Davis, Kyle Lafferty (9), Chris Brunt, Niall McGinn (8), Corry Evans, Josh Magennis (7)

Most goals Kyle Lafferty (7), Gareth McAuley (3), Steven Davis (2)

Most assists Oliver Norwood, Niall McGinn (3)

The Key Targets

Having played a part in eight of his nation’s 16 goals, courtesy of seven strikes and an assist, it’s fair to say that Kyle Lafferty is the likeliest source of Fantasy returns amongst the Northern Ireland squad. Priced at 7.0 in Uefa, the forward has shown next-to-no form on the domestic scene and was loaned out to Birmingham by Norwich last season, where his toils in the Championship make an unconvincing case for consideration. Set to be released by the Carrow Road club this summer, Lafferty is desperate to place himself firmly in the shop window over the tournament and was amongst the goals against Belarus at the weekend.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley offers a potential source of points at both ends of the pitch. Available for 5.0 in the Uefa game, he netted three times in the qualifiers to mirror the aerial menace in and around the opposition box that harvested four goals for the Baggies in 2015/16. McAuley presence at set-pieces could be a key attacking ploy for O’Neill’s men.

Steven Davis finished the previous season in style by netting three times over Southampton’s wins against Spurs and Palace. Available for 6.0 in the Uefa game, he scored twice over the qualifiers and registered double-figure hauls for both attempts on goal and chances created. The skipper’s defensive work could also appeal in the Draft Kings game.

Oliver Norwood (5.5 in Uefa) may be one to consider. He’s O’Neill’s first-choice for dead-ball duties, which could be key given that Ireland scored more goals from set-pieces than any side in the qualifiers. Norwood produced more than double the number of key passes than any team-mate and was also number one for crosses. His combative nature in the centre of the park could also be useful for successful tackles and interceptions in Draft Kings.

The Long Shots

Setting you back just 4.5 in Uefa and listed as a defender, Chris Baird offers O’Neill an option at the back or in a defensive central midfield role. The former West Brom man started eight of the ten qualifiers and looks more reliable for minutes than the similarly-priced Craig Cathcart and Paddy McNair, who also started against Belarus at the weekend. Should he be handed a role in the centre of the park, Baird is another to consider for defensive actions in the Draft Kings game.

The situation in goal is somewhat uncertain as both Roy Carroll and Michael McGovern started five qualifiers apiece and have been named in the XI in two of the last four friendlies. The duo are priced at 4.5 in Uefa and if one can emerge as O’Neill’s first-choice stopper, could prove decent value – it’s worth keeping an eye on their line up against Slovakia on June 4 for any clarification.

Strikers Conor Washington and Will Grigg are priced at 5.0 and bagged a goal apiece at the weekend. Although the former is the most popular forward under 6.0 in Uefa, with 3% ownership, he has been afforded a single sub appearance of late – against Belarus on Sunday. Washington, on the other hand, has been named in the XI in each of the last three friendlies and seems a more secure pick for those tight on funds.

Niall McGinn earned more appearances that any wide player over the qualifiers and chipped in with a trio of assists. His appeal is virtually non-existent in the Uefa game due to his classification as a forward but if he’s listed as a midfielder in Draft Kings, could be a viable budget enabler.

    Any suggestions on this draft:

    1.0M ITB for Shaquri -> Lukaku GW2
Got some gut feeling about Lukaku, maybe small bet for top scorer of tournament.
He should get a lot of chances from Hazard+De Bryne if they go far.

Lukaku doesn't fill me with confidence at present.

      I do have KGB though.

My front three are Lewandowski, Greaseman and Kane. Muller could well be a good shout.

        Nice front three with KDB.
Belgium have too much quality and create a lot of chances hope he will get some goals/assists.

If you take the view that premium mids and fwds are likely to dominate the points scoring, then the cheaper your defence the better imo.

There's a Swedish lad at 4.5 Lindolof who will start and Cavalaj from Spain owned by 10% looks handy.

I see Boeteng is the highest owned defender so a German defender may be a good shout.

    3 Questions regarding Euro Fantasy:

    1. Is Schar nailed for Switzerland?
2 Ozil or Gotze and why?
    3. Perisic or Payet (is he nailed?) and why?

      Yeah, when fit.
Prefer Ozil cos of minutes and set pieces
Errr ... Perisic, just imo. Great form for club and country. Payet not nailed but will probably play the first game.

I see a lot of online chat about the ENG squad.

People think Drinkwater ahead of Wilshere.

Great season but is he a better player than Wilshere at international level assuming JW regains his fitness?

No Drinkwater is not the better player. But he is fit and well I don't think we can say the same of Jack. One of him and Hendo should have sat out imo

There are different roles and skillsets in centre midfield and Drinky would have covered a potential injury to Dier better than any other mid in our squad.

First draft gents, not taking this one too seriously so have gone with a dose of hivemind + dash of personal preference. Any glaring errors?

    Patricio (4m)
Hector - Juanfran - Schar (Dier - Lindelof)
    Alaba - Siggy - Junuzovic - Perisic - (Mak)
    Lewandowski - Muller - Giroud

Too top heavy? I'm struggling to find that quintessential midfielder

I think they could. International tournaments are strange and you can always swap him out for someone else.
Taking a punt with a cheap player doesn't carry the same risk when you can swap it about.

Does anyone on my team not look nailed on? I will take out Mangala before the deadline if he's not in the lineup.

    Sommer / Rui Patricio
    Dier / Hector / Koscielny / Mangala / Vrsaljko
Alli / De Bruyne / Perisic / Sigurdsson / Rafa Silva
    Janko / Lewandowski / Giroud

Also, what are your thoughts on Sigurdsson? Plays a tough Portugal defence to start but ended the premier league season strongly and is the main man for Iceland. Iceland tend to be involved in high scoring games too.

I don't think Iceland will do well at all and can see them being rolled over

your team looks fine but Rafa Silva is a big risk and he plays on the last day so if you bring him in he could easily get you 0 points and loose you the point of the player you took out for him

Ronaldo only played 6 qualifying games for this tournament and scored 5 times. Not a bad strike rate slightly behind Muller.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he had played more.

If I go for Ronaldo, how do I fit one of Lewa and Muller beside him?
Ruins the whole structure of my team, unfortunately.

I have it set up as Kane - Muller - Ronaldo at the moment I think that spreads my forwards and captain options nicely through the week

But Lewa and Muller I think is a problem for me.

It costs a lot of money and when you spend that much money you would want to have the option of picking the most successful player as a captain choice. As they are both playing in the same group you will have a real captaincy dilemma. With my front line I will get 3 bites at the forward captain cherry to your 2.

So here's what I've come up with at the mo.
Only thing I don't like is not having Lewandowski 😕

    Sommer (Randolph)
    Dier-Djourou-Glik-Hector-Juanfran
    Mak-Payet(C)-Perisic (KDB/Junuzovic)
    Kane-Muller (Janko)

    Thoughts?

Looks like a strong team imo
I'm also a bit afraid of what Lewandowski can do but can't have them all right 😀

Dier to Dragovic is something I would consider

The structure of my team is based on a strategy Ruth_NZ brought up a couple weeks back, which is to have all 5 of your defenders playing in the first four groups and take the two lowest scoring out for two STRONG players on the bench. I tend to agree that this may be the way the game is set up to play, at least for the group stages. Very different to FPL which is challenging and fun at the same time 🙂

If you start your defenders first all 5? Who are you going to bring in? Don't really see the point in doing that if this means missing out on some great assets like Portugal or Austria defenders

true but I think Alba is one of the best picks in the game and he was one of the first names on my team sheet so willing to sacrifice midfield for him.

think that frontline is pretty perfect so again happy with a weaker midfield.

How important is the bench on this euro thing? I've got Volkan Sen on my bench ATM, but have 1.5 in the bank. Should I spend the and get a 7.0 midfielder for the bench?

I can see 2 arguments. Money in the bank allows you more freedom for your next transfer so that would be nice.

But I think more importantly the fact that you can sub players in mid gameweek suggests to me that it is worth having players who are worthwhile bringing in.

There won't be changing captain between games on official uefa fantasy?
For example, I put Giroud as a captain and he does nothing - I can't make Kane be captain for tomorrows game, like a second chance?
I know some sites offer this feature, I want to make sure uefa.com won't have this. 🙂

      Hello all,

      ---------------Randoph----------------
      Denayer Dier Lindelof Rodriguez
      -DeBruyne Perisic Payet(c)Brady-
      ------------Muller Ronaldo------------
      ---------------------------------------------
      --Patricio Janko R.Silva Dragovic--

First timer at this game, my bench is 2x POR and 2x AUS (both play on the last day of MD1)
      I have 4 questions;

1: Am I correct that I can sub those 4 in on the last day if I wish?
2: How many times can I change my captain in a match day?
3: Any better shouts than Brady @6.0?
      4: How's my team look?

Thanks for any replies and hope you're all well.

I am still getting my head around some of this stuff too

        1. Yes. You can sub players every day as the game days go on before the next round of fixtures
        2. Every day.
        3. Mak?
        4. R Silva is a rotation risk. If you bring him in for the last day and he then doesn't play you do not get the opportunity to sub him out. If you are having a rotation risk have them in an earlier group where you can do something about it. But generally I like your side

Based on this extremely small sample size, it seems like the range for goals over an entire season isn't that wide. The range for assists is a bit wider but the real difference is in the CS's. Those with very high overall ranks seemed to nail down a lot more clean sheets and bench fewer points than I did. This doesn't account for bonus pts but I suspect their clean sheets were often by players gaining bonus pts as well

I like Lindeloff because he has a decent chance of shutting Ireland out. Shame he plays during a later matchday.
