Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Croatia

First up in our Group D analysis is Croatia. Ante Cacic’s men get their tournament underway against Turkey on Sunday June 12 at 2pm before facing up to Czech Republic five days later at 5pm and then going head-to-head with Spain at 8pm on Tuesday June 21.

Listed as second favourites to win their group, Croatia face a tough task to progress if they make it into the last 16 – should, as expected, they finish runners-up to Spain, they’d take on the winners of Group E in the first stage of the knockouts, which would pit them against the likes of Belgium or Italy.

Road to Qualification

Croatia finished second in qualifying Group H behind Italy, winning six and drawing three of their ten matches in a table that also included the likes of Norway and Bulgaria.

Their progress was far from plain sailing, though. Installed in the hotseat towards the end of the qualifying period after the dismissal of Niko Kovac, the inexperienced Cacic has been criticised for his tactics, with a recent friendly against Israel seeing him trial four different formations. He’s also had a public falling-out with Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren and has omitted the centre-half from his squad for the tournament.

Deducted one point due to their fans’ off-field behaviour, Croatia produced 20 goals over their ten group fixtures, with 11 of those strikes arriving in home matches against Azerbaijan and Norway. At the back, they conceded just five times and earned six clean sheets, shipping more than a single goal on one occasion.

Croatia have played five friendly matches over the last 12 months, winning four times – against Gibraltar 4-0, Russia 3-1, Israel 2-0, and Moldova (1-0 last week) – and drawing 1-1 with fellow-qualifiers Hungary. They head into Saturday’s clash against San Marino on the back of a run that’s seen them lose just once in the last 12 fixtures.

Most Appearances Danijel Subasic, Ivan Rakitic (10), Vedran Corluka, Darijo Srna, Domagoj Vida, Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Perisic (9), Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, Mario Mandzukic, Ivica Olic (8), Josip Pivaric, Andrej Kramaric (6)

Most goals Ivan Perisic (6), Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric, Andrej Kramaric (2)

Most assists Ivan Rakitic (4), Dario Srna (3), Ivica Olic (2)

The Key Targets

Priced at 7.5 apiece in the Uefa game, midfield pair Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic look the top two contenders for those eyeing up Croatia’s main men.

Both players make a convincing case for consideration. Inter winger Perisic fired more attempts on goal than any team-mate during qualifying and registered more than three times the number of shots inside the box than Rakitic. As a result, he ended the campaign as top scorer, with six strikes, and has continued that form in recent friendlies, producing a goal and two assists over the last three matches.

Although Rakitic scored just once by comparison, he managed just two attempts less than Perisic over the group matches, though most of his threat is from long distance. The Barcelona man is Croatia’s chief source of creativity, though – his 35 key passes is almost double the number of Perisic and Luka Modric combined, whilst he’s the undisputed number one for dead-ball duties and should provide crosses aplenty, which boosts his DraftKings potential.

Up top, spot-kick taker Mario Mandzukic fired more efforts inside the box than any Croatia player during the qualifiers but found the net on just one occasion. Priced at 8.0 in the Uefa game, he looks guaranteed to start regardless of whether Cacic plays one or two up top and could be worth considering if he can rediscover the form that produced 13 goals and five assists for Juventus in 2015/16.

At the back, Darijo Srna looks the likeliest source of points at both ends of the pitch, though comes in at a pricey 6.0 in the Uefa game. Second only to Rakitic for both key passes and crosses, his raids from full-back provided a trio of assists over the qualifiers, whilst Srna’s defensive numbers also bode well in DraftKings.

The Long Shots

Whilst there’s no question over his security of starts, Luka Modric (7.0 in Uefa) may struggle to justify his inclusion in our squads. The Real Madrid man is likely to be stationed in the double-pivot and, although he found the net twice during qualifying, mustered just three shots on target over his eight appearances.

An under the radar option, Marcelo Brozovic is likely to partner Modric in central midfield and comes in at just 6.5. The Inter Milan man also scored twice in qualifying, though his stats are more impressive – indeed, he produced more than double the number of efforts inside the box than Modric and also bettered him for tackles and interceptions. Brozovic grabbed a goal and assist in a 2-0 friendly over Israel in March and also netted in a win over Russia in November.

At the back, keeper Danijel Subasic and the versatile Domagoj Vida are both available for 5.0 and look nailed-on for those looking to invest in Croatia’s defence. The latter led the way for interceptions over the qualifiers and registered five efforts inside the box – more than any defender.

Sime Vrsaljo comes in at 4.5 and, after starting each of the last two friendlies at right-back, has been selected by 3% of Uefa managers. It looks debatable as to whether he can retain a place in the XI when the tournament gets underway, though. Although skipper Srna is versatile enough to shift over to the left, he’s expected to be stationed on the right, with Vida taking up the left-back berth and Vrsaljo dropping to the bench. As we saw against Moldova, though, Vida could also be utilised at centre-half if Cacic wanted to field the likes of Napoli’s Ivan Strinic (4.0) on the left instead.

Nikola Kalinic is less certain to start under the new manager but could be worth monitoring if he can nail down a berth in the first XI. Priced at 6.5 in the Uefa game, he netted 12 times for Fiorentina in last year’s Serie A and could offer Cacic an option alongside Mandzukic if Croatia opt for a two-man frontline.

Now I'm over my hip op and the Toon being relegated, I'd better get into Euro mode!

Am I right in thinking the furthest right player drops out if you change formation during a round?

It's improved since last time I think Pap - drag and drop players and the formation changes automatically.

Taylor's time was overdue sadly. Was it the Southampton game where somebody literally walked past him unchallenged with the ball?

Yeah it was that game, I still get taunted by a couple of Southampton fans now at work if I stay in one spot for too long....

Nah. We'll see possibly some well organised underdogs surprising in the beginning (Austria, Ukraine, Czechs, Iceland, Slovakia), and some will get excited, but really that's just because some/many of the expected big nations fail to impress. Unless the rumours about the internal problems of Croatia turn out to be false, none of the surprisers will make it too far. At best to semis, if one manages to win its group and is thereafter handed an easy way up until then (I drew one trial with Wales winning its group, and had them playing Albania in 16's and having a relatively easy way to semis).

This Euro already feels like such a let down. In the World Cup 2014 many interesting European nations played young squads without much hope to win it but rather just to gain experience, and I really expected them to reap on what they sowed back then, and come up with something very interesting, of top quality, in this Euro.

How disappointing is it then that they either missed the Euro altogether (Netherlands), miss half of the team that was built for this exact tournament and line up inexperienced and second row players instead (France), just don't seem to have enough of quality (Italy), are allegedly in an internal crisis (Croatia) or do not have internal tactical cohesion (Switzerland), or are managed by an idiot (Belgium). Then there are others who didn't show promise of future in Brazil and are now either with mostly similar team (Russia) or have changed a lot and are now gaining experience, and are managed by an idiot (England).

What is left is Germany, who are however undergoing a generation change in the defence that can undermine their campaign, and Spain, who eventually did not make such a sweeping generation change now despite their World Cup failure, but maybe tweaked the team just enough and just early enough to revive it and still have the cohesion for the tournament. Both of these have most of their squad about in the peak age, and with already heavy international experience, having played together for years, with a couple of young guns to spar them. The recipe for success that all others lack, which promises for a boring tournament lacking competition.

I agree with your analysis after actually reading it 🙂

Still, I think that it makes for an exciting tournament, albeit one with lower general quality of football..

I think it offers a huge chance to the "nearly teams".. Poland, Ukraine, Croatia (if the "rumour" is false 😉 ), Turkey, Austria... Could see some make it farther than usual 🙂 Especially with the big teams mainly struggling with their defences.

              Let's go Éire 😉

Yeah, may be exciting group stage, and it being a long tournament, also the round of 16, QF's even, but my point is that, in the end, that all just serves to hide the fact that this is most likely to be just a duel between Spain and Germany. Which some could argue, plausibly, is what European football has been for 8 years now, but I think we were entitled to expect at least Belgium and France to stand up to challenge them this time. Fat chance!

Although I agree, I hope you're wrong 🙂 Spain's capitulation at the World Cup was refreshing in a weird way.

We live in hope that Germany's defence is so porous that they crash out early, Spain make a decent go of it but using more of the "new class" of Nolito / Thiago / Bellerin etc, France score enough goals to get them far enough in the tournament, but all 3 of them crash out to a Belgium team finally let loose, taking everybody by surprise and scoring the most goals of any Euro comp ever. 😀

I think we're in for at least one surprise, the big teams have glaring weaknesses this time and have been riding their luck at times in past tournaments.

It was. And there's no denying that it was a surprise.

Yeah, there's hoping that Germany can't settle their defence in time for the Euro. And there's no denying that they have problems. Look at the qualifiers, they conceded 3 goals to Scotland! (over two matches)

A surprise team reaching semis is almost promised seen the state of the favourites. Only if the best underdogs have to play Spain/Germany before it, that won't happen.

Belgium, by now, would not be a surprise. The only surprise is how awful they are. They will probably be the greatest disappointment of them all.

I don't hope that. But I hope it's either that or then winning the title, because any decent finish would keep Wilmots at helm, and can't see Wilmots winning it.

But yeah, betting and fantasy football wise there's a lot of interest in these potential surprisers and failing favourites in the early stages. Just have to find the right ones.

The Croatia article here really read: they're kind of carp, really. Didn't raise my expectations. Before that rumour, I was really seeing them as the dark horse of this tournament.

Well, Mandzukic is actually pretty fine. The defence has the advantage of having in general experience playing together at the top stage. They will probably need more protection, however, than what that midfield can provide. It's somewhat unbalanced team, you're right.

Too little money in defence, too little goals in midfield and too much money up top for the amount of points you get for a goal as a forward(4). Lewandowski downgraded to Giroud/Morata would be better and if you have no other Polish attack I'd go for Milik up top. Perisic is the only midfielder I'd keep! Alaba is on set pieces, Stanciu of Romania for 5.5 has got some strong recent stats and plays early. Look at some of those.

I was thinking about this type of move but just needed somebody to tell me to do it! Alaba/Junozovic was a toss up but if Alaba is on set pieces I will roll with him. There aren't really a whole range of midfield options I like in general, although I think of the French midfielders with his recent form Matuidi is the best option as Payet/Martial not guaranteed start and Pogba probably fairly similar and costs more. Shaqiri a risk but with opening two games is tempting and I was thinking that Dier would not be of any value until last night when the goal threat was non existent. Still think Mak is a better value bet than Stanciu because Slovakia will probably carry a greater goal threat. Rami or Koscielny?

    Rui Patricio

    Juanfran, Hector, Eliseu

How do I create my own Euros stats tables? I tried creating one and it only shows Premier League stats.

In the top right, there's a dropdown. Make sure it's set to "European Championship Qualifiers".

I noticed that, had it set at international friendlies, yet still it shows PL players once it's created?

        Thanks for your response.

Change the dropdown and remember to click the Go button next to it. When the page reloads, it should have the right players/teams in the dropdowns.

Tried one more time, and even after double checking that I'd hit Go, it still shows PL players. But when I try to modify the table and change 'all teams' to some team I can only choose from international teams, which would be correct. I tried choosing just Austria to see if that would at least give me stats for Alaba, Janko etc. but I only got this error message:

We couldn't find any players for the currently selected filters. Try changing filters or double check they're correct.

Anyways, I see there's some great public tables up already, so I'll enjoy those right now.

They'll probably start but Iniesta will be subbed off on occasion and may be rested in the third game if Spain have qualified, plus he doesn't score too many.

With regards to Portugal, it's their defence or Ronaldo or nobody for me.

              Iniesta -> Cesc
Find a way to do Nani -> Muller too imo, M.Gomez if you want to punt.

I was under the impression that Cesc wasn't a sure thing.

I looked at Gomez but I thought he'd be a bit part player too

I thought Nani would be a starter that would get goals in an easy group with Ronaldo also up front

Cesc is a "fairly sure" thing. 90% sure 🙂

Gomez I have no idea about, he has played the last 4 but still not nailed on. I'm going with Muller myself for that reason.

Nani will probably start but Portugal have been woeful attacking-wise, scoring very few goals, and Ronaldo will almost certainly bag all of their goals imo. I could be wrong, so if you have a gut feeling about Nani, go for it 🙂 I wouldn't myself though. Janko is another good option at 7.5m nailed on up front for Austria.

I'm still not sold on Austria.

I do have a feeling about Nani though as I feel defenders will be more worried about Ronaldo.

                    Gomez is tempting

    Kadlec Rami/Mangala Schar Vrsaljko (Juanfran)

    Lewandowski Muller (Janko)
I plan on WC after matchday2

You say you think im spending too much? But apart from Rodriguez-Lichsteiner and Griezmann-Giroud all the players you've suggested are worth more. Pogba is 1.5 m less than De Bruyne and they both contribute the same amount to their team. Griezmann is better than Giroud and more consistent. Matuidi plays for a better team than Perisic and has an easier group. Just my thoughts.

Depends on who you have in your team from groups F, G. If you've got Ronaldo, then you;re probably going to captain him anyway. So have to decide what points total you will stick on for your captain, and when to twist.

I think so, Both should be vying for the LW with Pedro, unless Silva is brought back in more central but he's very lacking defensively so I can't see them playing both Iniesta and Silva in the CAM positions..

If Morata starts (likely) then he could be a great option. I'm going with a punt on Cesc myself.

        Must be 90% corners, surely?

With Schweini crocked, surely Kroos will be the deepest of all their midfielders?

I assumed he would be playing as part of the 2 in a 4 2 3 1 formation . If he plays as a number 10 that might change things . I am happy to avoid for the min

Some believe with Reus' omission from the squad that he'll play as a no.10. Can't see it myself.

There's no chance he plays as a 10.

At best he'll play on in a 433, and even then he's a controller rather than an FPL option.

        Madness spreads. 😉 😆

Why no chance? He is an AM by formation and used to play most of the time somewhere in the 3 behind the striker before being forced deeper by the excess of attacking player in his side (this particularly took effect when he moved to Real). Defensive game has never been his strong point anyway, and his movement and vision make him wonderful as no. 10 when his team is dominating possession thoroughly as we can expect Germany to do most of the time.

Because he probably last played as a 10 at Bayern, because Germany have the best 10 in the world in Ozil, and because they don't have many decent central midfielders with Schweini crocked and Gundogan dead.

He'll play behind a front 4 well capable of goals against anyone,
takes his fair share of set pieces,
HUGE number of touches in the opposition's half,
he's the heartbeat of the German midfield 🙂

Only downside is that the points should be shared out between Muller, Gomez, Gotze, Ozil, Schurrle, Kroos..

Playing in a good team is always a positive for me good teams score lots of goals and create lots of chances good players in bad teams often rely on set pieces . The biggest negatives for me were the fact he only had one assist in qualifying and he had very few shots on target and itb

    Thoughts on this team?

    Kozáčik (Rui Patricio)
    Matel, Schär, Chester (Juanfran, Hinteregger)
    Payet, D.Silva Ozil Perisic (7.5)
    Muller Giroud(c) (Nolito)

Schurrle, Felliani or Hamsik for the last spot. Last two give me an extra captaincy option. What do you reckon?

Nice. Alba does tickle my fancy but I see value in Juanfran. I'm a firm believer that there's cheap points to be had in defence without shelling out 35% of your budget

    Euro 2016 Members Tables

I've noticed that some of you have already started compiling some excellent Members tables based on our 2016/17 Membership including international fixture data for the first time.

Feel free to post your tables here. Also if you want advice on constructing Members tables feel free to ask here.

Here's one I made earlier - looking at the tournament's best penalty takers, corner takers and free kick specialists. Has a global filter so can be sorted by Qualifiers and friendlies. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/14358/

At the top near the FFSCOUT logo is a drop down menu - gives options for Euro Qualifiers, Friendlies and Prem Lg. Select the one you want - so qualifiers for example and take it from there. All tables etc will focus on those.

    Thoughts?

    Patricio - Sommer
    Mangala - Dier - Chiriches - Klein - Denayer
    De Bruyne - Martial - 8m - Alli - Rafa Silva
    Muller - Kane - Morata

Thinking maybe Perisic as my 7.5m mid.
Schuurle, Iniesta and Koke are other options if starting. Maybe even Fabregas

Perisic imo. Good team although you'll need a better 5th mid than Rafa. Don't like Chiriches either.
