Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Having assessed the goalkeepers, budget defenders and mid-price defenders over the last few days, we continue our look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list with an analysis of the premium backline options.

For this group of 6.0 and 6.5 priced players, FPL managers deserve the very best.

These players should offer a strong chance of a clean sheet, be assured of starts and have a significant attacking threat. They should also impress FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS), which favours those who are accurate with passing and crossing and who contribute plenty of clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

With 172 FPL points accrued, Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin (6.5) was in sensational form last season and is now among the game’s highest priced rearguard options. Across a raft of statistics, including five assists and 18 clean sheets, Bellerin ranked top amongst defenders and, if he can improve on his haul of a single goal, he looks destined to once again be a regular source of points at both ends of the pitch.

Bellerin is currently the most popular defender in FPL and sits in just under 30% of squads.

Gunners centre back Laurent Koscielny (6.0) offers a cheaper alternative, with heightened bonus potential and goal threat. Last season the France international was in the top ten for defenders in terms of CBI and scored four times, though he is currently less popular than his Spanish team-mate having been selected by 17% of FPL managers to this point.

Nacho Monreal could be an overlooked option. Owned by under 7% of FPL managers, he matched Bellerin for starts (36 apiece) last term and comes in at 6.0 – he was almost on a par with his fellow full-back for shots (12 to 13) and bettered him for key passes (29 to 23). Monreal’s performances last season relegated Kieran Gibbs (5.0) to a cameo role and we’re anticipating that trend to continue this term.

A strong early fixture list, which contains away ties with Watford, Hull and Burnley in the first seven Gameweeks, certainly promotes the case to include an Arsenal heavyweight defender in your initial squad, though one of Per Mertesacker or Gabriel (both at 5.0) could provide value options here if either can nail down a starting role.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld keeps Bellerin company at the 6.5 price point and is currently second to the Gunners’ man in terms of ownership (25%).

With 166 FPL points, the Belgian was last season’s second-highest ranked defender, thanks to four goals from 40 goal attempts – only Sunderland’s Patrick Van Aanholt had more shots on goal from the back.

Alderweireld’s bonus point potential is also strong, particularly in terms of CBI, where he was 2015/16’s third best performer.

We should also expect clean sheets: no side conceded fewer goals than Spurs last season, with 13 shut outs accrued.

Danny Rose (6.0) offers a slightly cheaper alternative, but with fellow Spurs full back Kyle Walker priced 0.5 cheaper his appeal is greatly reduced this season. As mentioned previously, we’re also expecting Spurs to rotate at full-back around Champions League ties; it’s hoped that Alderweireld will be immune to that.

Under new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, Chris Smalling (6.0) has the potential to improve on 2015/16’s FPL point tally of 135.

He’s expected to remain a mainstay in central defence having been pivotal to the Red Devils achieving 18 clean sheets last season. Smalling was also among the top three defenders for winning aerial duels, and in the top five in terms of interceptions.

With Luke Shaw looking particularly appealing at 5.5, though, Smalling – who is suspended for the opener at Bournemouth – will have to improve his attacking output to convince he’s worth the extra outlay – he mustered just a single assist last season.

Chelsea’s backline have been handed reduced prices as a result of last season’s nine clean sheets.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.0) has all the ingredients for success under new manager Antonio Conte. Last season he was second among defenders in terms of successful tackling as well as third for passes in the final third. If Conte opts for a 3-5-2 formation, Azpilicueta could be given even more license to attack and add to his tally of three assists and two goals.

So far in pre-season, though, Conte has preferred a back four, which could force a reassessment in his likely starters.

Both Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill also set you back 6.0 and the Serbian, in particular, could be one to monitor if he can retain a starting berth and reprise the form that served up four goals and six assists in the Blues’ 2014/15 title-winning season.

Again, though, there are likely to be cheaper options, with Kurt Zouma (5.5) certainly one to consider when he returns to action in September.

Man City trio Vincent Kompany, Aleksandar Kolarov and Nicolas Otamendi are the remaining premium options for our five-man defences.

All three are priced at 6.0 apiece, though, arguably, Otamendi looks the safest bet at present. Although Kompany is believed to be winning his fitness race ahead of the new season, the Belgian’s abysmal injury record dents his appeal – despite sitting joint-top for points per match (5.4) at the back last year, he was restricted to just 14 appearances.

Kolarov, meanwhile, could drop behind Gael Clichy in the pecking order – a 78.7% pass accuracy last term was lower than any City defender, which hardly bodes well for his role in Pep Guardiola’s possession-based tactics.

Despite scoring just once in 2015/16, Otamendi’s tally of 21 efforts inside the penalty area was bettered by only four other defenders, highlighting his aerial threat in and around the box.

Much depends on Guardiola’s restructuring, though, given that John Stones continues to be heavily linked with a move to City. At a price of just 5.0, there’s no doubt that Stones would be heavily targeted by Fantasy managers should he roll up at the Etihad and offer a secure route into a defence that racked up 16 shut-outs in the previous campaign.

Are Premium Defenders worth it this year?
So hard to get good Mids and Strikers if you go with these Defenders!

Mids seem very expensive this season, or atleast all the ones I want. For that reason somethings got to give, and with ibra/kun/Kane/Lukaku all looking important, it's gotta be defenders.
I'm working out 2 pairs of cheap rotations, same with GKs

    2. Paradoxymoron
      • 9 Years

I think there are valid lines of argument for having premium defenders. Aside from the obvious point that if they score highly they represent much better value than a mid or attacker, I think there are some good premium options this season.

Conte going to Chelsea just screams clean sheets to me, his teams always seem to be so well organised and tactically aware. I'm just trying to work out who the best choice would be for my team. I'm leaning towards Terry simply because he looks most nailed on. Paying 5.5 for probable clean sheets and a goal threat from set pieces seems like a no brainer to me. I would appreciate any info from Chelsea fans who might have seen any Chelsea pre season games with regards to their defence. Who started at full back/what system was played?

There's also obvious parallels at United with Mourinho's arrival who I'm sure will get a lot of clean sheets aswell. If Shaw hits form he could get a lot of points this year, I'm just not quite sure if he will be fully fit and nailed on early doors.

I'm also split between picking at Wimmer (5) who will definitely start the first few games due to Vert's injury. Or going for Walker at 5.5 or going for Alderweireld at 6.5 who is less of a rotation risk. Leaning towards Toby.

Townsend the safe choice knowing he can perform in the league and CRY have great fixtures.

Gradel showed glimpses before and after injury but BOU don't have the best fixtures.

Fischer is bloody good. I used to live in Amsterdam until recently and watched a lot of him at Ajax, he definitely has the ability to hurt teams in the prem, I think he's actually a little underrated. 5.5 is a steal, and Boro have some great opening fixtures. He's almost definitely in my team for the first few games at least.

I'm considering Wilson and Gray now with Kun. That frees up funds so I can afford an awesome midfield of Kdb, martial, Mhki and Firmino

Coach me up on Feghouli and Townsend. Worth a rotating pair for 4th mid? Early fixtures are brilliant. When one has a tough match, seems like the other one's is fairly easy.

Is this a good plan? Using my all-out attack first game:

    Mandanda (Jakupovic)
    Taylor - Wasilewski (Evans - - Friend - Paredes)
    Ayew - Fabregas - Mahrez - Tadic - Townsend
    Aguero - Lukaku - Costa

I'll sub Tadic GW2, bring on Friend.
Also, is Aguero vital? Tempted to use Vardy at the start

Here's the thing with Aguero - he's the best striker in the league and when City run hot and destroy a team, he will be at the heart of it all. Goals + assists. It's tempting to make him Captain for every game coz you know there will be some big hauls.

Whats the weakness with this team?

    Courtois - (Jakupovic)
    Shaw - Clichy - Baines - (Friend - Parades)
    Hazard - Mkhitaryan - Coutinho - Townsend - (Fletcher)
    Aguero - Berahino - Musa

The starting back four are interchangeable with other options from those clubs.

Berahino - Dependant on the move

Musa - Potential exchange for Tekkers if he also gets an attractive move

I have been thinking about this.

      I like an early wildcard.

But creating a team now to wildcard saying going into gw4 is short sighted. It could be a case then that you have backed yourself into a hole to wildcard then and you always want outs and options.

My strategy is to build a strategy, a plan of something to aim for how to moves between weeks and fixture transition if I don't wildcard and if I do wildcard, well then I've basically not started as well as I'd have liked.

      1. George Sillett
        • 8 Years

Always had plans myself to hold onto wildcard but I generally start so badly that it is played GW2 or 3. Would just like to get off to a decent start ( top 200k would do first week).

I remember when Mane was in a lot of teams last season at the beginning, not so anymore despite a big money move to a bigger club. Like Walcott, it was a pick based on the hope he could be devastating in brief moments and being a midfielder that would be enough. How did people see Mahrez last season? Like Chris Waddle, people here. I just thought; he'll never score in that side, for all his flair. I didn't see Vardy either. People spotted Coleman too and then he had a great season, and since then he's not been as brilliant. I've picked Fermino based on the big games, his second season now, but I also was dead sure Coutinho, having come in January, would flourish, 3 goals, 7 assists in 10 games. With those strikers to feed he'd bag loads of assists, 5 goals 7 assists in 25 games for the next season, not worth the i think it was 9m. (or was it 8.5m at the start? - i don't know what the 'value' refers to, the beginning price, the end, or the average)

I'm in a draft league and need to draft before end of pre-season. I'm thinking I should take Firmino or Mané as over the season they could be good. But I was also thinking of martial! Can I ask why not martial and also, who would you advise as essential for the whole season regardless of injury etc ??

The problem with Mane is Firmino, Coutinho, Henderson, Can, Milner, Lallana, Grujic and now Wijnaldum.

Mané and Firmino can play upfront aswell tho, makes them more versatile. Basically when Sturridge is injured, one of those 2 could be gold. When everyone is fit, everyone is susceptible to rotation

Its hard to guess and I think everyone is understanding that we just have to wait for the games and leap on anyone who shows potential. Fischer and Townsend could be really good. I was liking the idea of barrow this year too but he's been listed as a striker. So if after a game or two, people say 'he looks quite good' - buy him

True but they have to score at some point and he's the only one who can score. Their second highest scorer last year was Diame!

Seems a bit cheap? How much?

        Keepers are perfect.
Defense is weak but rotates quite well so worth it to fund stronger attacking options. I've been thinking Koné aswell but we need to see who's gonna be the manger first.

Change Hernandez for Wilson or Gray for extra .5

Downgrade Sanchez to Siggy/Townsend etc. & upgrade defence would be my advice

This is not my team, it is just a draft with a few top players and 7 4.5 players in defence 😀

Best, lowest priced, relatively secure defender for these 4 clubs..

    Chelsea
    Manchester United
    Manchester City
    Everton

    Terry, Shaw, Sagna, Jags?

With all of these teams you can pay 0.5 less than the highest price defenders, but for that money I wouldn't want to risk them not playing.

What you do to squeeze some juice for the attack, ey! 🙂

Hopefully, it will become clear before the season gets underway!

      1. Terry should be nailed but I think when Zouma is fit and if they sign a good defender (inevitably) then he's gotta be in trouble.
      2. Agree
      3. Agree
      4. Agree but I like Funes Mori who should be pretty nailed too but especially if stones goes

What are the thoughts on here about Mendy (4.5m) as 5th midfielder? Should be in Kante's position at Leicester and pretty much nailed on for 90 mins each week.

Could have said the same with Kante last year or someone like Fletcher this year

Etienne Capoue and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg are much cooler names

If he's playing DM I'd look for someone else who might offer more. No idea who at the mo I'm afraid.

Problem with the 4.5s is they all play in either the CDM or CM position. First few GWs will be helpful in showing if any 4.5s plan to be used further up the pitch.

I think Fletcher is the best option at 4.5.. Not completely defensive, gets the odd goal and assist and isn't a card magnet.

Yeah, with the 4.5 it's probably best to just play it safe

From an FPL perspective im really keen on knowing where KDB & Silva will play this season.

Where do you think will be each of their most common positions ojn pitch?

Citeh will be an evolution IMO. I wouldn't want to second guess Pep. Aguero is the only one I am including initially.

It's going to be interesting because Pep always likes a right footer on the left wing and a left footer on the right, generally with pace. I could see De Bruyne possibly starting on the left

I'd like to see them lineup similarly to last season; something like this

      -------------------------- Hart --------------------------
      RB ----- Kompany ------ Otamendi --- Rodriguez
      ----------- Yaya Toure ------ Gundogan ------------
      De Bruyne ----------- Silva ---------- Nolito/ Sterling
      ------------------------ Aguero ----------------------------

Bowstrong, if this was the case - would you fancy Silva?

Hard to know what Pep is thinking

Silva is best in the middle, but so is KDB, so you have two fantastic players fighting over 1 spot where they both excel in. I think Silva wide ir worse than KDB wide so for that reason I would like to see De Bruyne on the wing and Silva in the middle.
