The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Guidolin’s Swansea

We continue our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, with a look at Swansea City’s progress under new manager Francesco Guidolin.

First off, we check the Swans’ team statistics from the point of the Italian’s appointment in Gameweek 23 and compare them to the previous numbers under former boss Garry Monk as well as the rest of Premier League. We’ll also analyse their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

The Welsh club were quick off the mark last time out, drawing against Chelsea and beating Man United in the opening four rounds of fixtures. That early-season form was short-lived, though, and, by the time of Monk’s departure, they sat just a single point ahead of the drop zone after winning one of his final 11 league encounters at the helm.

Guidolin’s impact was immediate. Starting with a 2-1 triumph at Everton on his debut, he steered the club to seven wins in the final 16 matches, compared to five victories in 22 beforehand, in a run that ultimately saw them finish 12 points clear of the bottom three.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I really like it actually, all major team covered. Only suggestion would be maybe to downgrade Lukaku and get Mahrez in for Firmino for first few game weeks. Other than that I really like it, just don't know about Liv first few games is all.

Been my opinion for a couple of years that Rooney ruins the team. It seems they will do anything to get him on the pitch in any position because he's the talisman. I wouldn't be surprised if they milk him to the point where he's playing in the defense soon.

I'm not surprised - who on earth are you benching each week from that front 8? Plus your defence is a genuine car crash. Downgrade Townsend to a 4.5 and spend the extra 1m in defence. You need at least one player from utd/city/chelsea/arsenal back there.

Mata is twice the player Rooney is in my opinion. Surely if Rooney doesn't sort himself and Mata isn't sold he will find his way into the team this season?

      Jose will play Rooney

Mata will be out the door

So would I, Rooney is massively overpaid and hasn't been very good for a few years now. Really is a shame. Hopefully Mata goes to Everton, could see him doing really well there.

See above, that's my thinking as well but I read that Mou only promised him a start every 3rd game or something...which is ridiculous to even state that considering you pick your team based on form not pre-season promises. I feel he will get time and prove himself, he has too or else his career is done. Man Utd won't want to lose all that money they spent on him so they won't sell for nothing and no one will pay top dollar for him if he isn't playing and proving his worth.

re bojan, he was our best player and 100% nailed until he got injured around xmas. Arny hasnt taken a pen with him on the pitch, altho that might change since arny was 3/3 for pens last season and has become the main man at stoke. Nevertheless sparky gives him a lot of freedom and will be playing mostly behind the striker (4-2-3-1) but occasionally a false 9 in a 4-3-3 so he looks good value at 6. He's definitely one to monitor and easy to slot in if he starts firing.

I like him, but from the games I watched he got dragged for fun. I don't mind having him in there if he's going to be rotated but if he plasy 45-55 minutes it's a total no go for fantasy

        • 9 Years

Arny is certainly the safer pick but at 7.5 i think there are better options to start with at that price bracket, so i think its just a wait and see with both of them.

    Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - Evans - Friend - Souare - Francis
    KDB - Mkhitaryan - Townsend - Gradel - Capoue
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Wilson

    1) Too Man U and Bournemouth heavy?
    2) Defence too light?
    3) Lack of Chelsea?

double cherries attack with poor fixtures is, I think, too much

you've got 8 of your starting 11 from 3 teams, which I think is too much for opening weeks - city and united play each other early for a start

      defence is fine

I am settled on the below.

    Valdes | jako

    Dann | Evans | Fuchs | Shaw
    Mane | erikson | ayew
    Long | aguero | lukaku
Subs: alder | feghouli | watson
    (In the bank 0.5)

After tinkering with a few days I have settled for the above. I noticed that I have 1 player from each match and 2 players from (cry\westbrom) for possible double clean sheet.

Is it common consensus to start with a player from each game? Have you decided to double\triple up taking into account preseason form, which can be deceiving?

Would it be considered the right approach to take a risk and double up on teams and may perform well, instead of spreading the chips across the board in an attempt to get an early lead.

Yes he is a great defender. Evans gets the nod since I am hoping for a crystal palace and westbrom clean sheet. Also, I do have lukaku who plays tottenham and I hope he will contribute in someway.

    Kane/Vardy/Gray

I don't get why people forgot about the top scorers of last season. Spurs and Leicester are likely to score and Kane - Vardy are no1 candidates to bring points in those teams.
