Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-up

David Moyes wins his first match in charge at Sunderland, Jordan Mutch continues Crystal Palace’ unbeaten summer run and Middlesbrough cruise to victory in the Spanish sun.

Here’s the latest from a low-key day of action…

Stade Nyonnais 0 Sunderland 2

Two penalties from Duncan Watmore handed David Moyes his first win as the new Sunderland manager blooded eight Academy players.

Watmore, priced at 5.0 and listed as a midfielder in the official Fantasy Premier League game, was used up front as Jermain Defoe missed the match with a niggle.

As highlighted in our Budget Midfielder article, Watmore could offer great value if he is deployed in advanced positions by Moyes, and he did his case for a forward berth no harm in Switzerland.

He earned the first penalty himself and slotted home the second just before half-time following a foul on George Honeyman.

Moyes recalled Billy Jones and Lee Cattermole after they recovered from minor knocks and fielded Jack Rodwell as a makeshift centre-half, but otherwise used his more senior players sparingly in the hot Alpine conditions.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Ledger, Rodwell (J Robson 46), T Robson (Borini 76), Cattermole (N’Zogbia 46), E Robson, Honeyman (Van Aaanholt 76), Gooch (Khazri 76), Watmore (Asoro 64), Greenwood (Lens 76).

Colchester United 0 Crystal Palace 1

Jordan Mutch’s sweet strike from a Jason Puncheon assist made it three straight pre-season wins for Palace.

Alan Pardew gave 20 players a run-out and, having trialled a 3-5-2 in the previous friendly, opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Connor Wickham as the lone striker supported by Andros Townsend, Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie, who managed just under 60 minutes in his first start of the summer.

Mutch and Hiram Boateng anchored the midfield and Pardew gave Alex McCarthy the full 90 minutes in goal.

Wilfried Zaha, James Tomkins, Bakary Sako and James McArthur all missed out, with Pardew confirming pre-match:

”They just have minor knocks that they’re not really ready for the game, so we’ll see how they are on Wednesday ahead of Wimbledon.”

Crystal Palace XI: McCarthy, Ward, Dann (Kelly 70), Delaney (Croll 70), Fryers (Binnom-Williams 78), Boateng (Jedinak 59), Mutch (Ladapo 85), Puncheon (Lee 59), Bolasie (Kaikai 59), Townsend (Berkeley-Agyepong 70), Wickham (Campbell 45).

Middlesbrough 2 Al-Ahli 0

Middlesbrough ended their time in southern Spain with a 2-0 win over Saudi champions Al-Ahli.

Second half goals from David Nugent and a fine individual strike from Julien de Sart sealed the victory for Aitor Karanka’s team.

Viktor Fischer provided the assist for Nugent’s goal, with Karanka again using the Danish international winger in the No10 position, although he later partnered Nugent in attack.

Eleven changes were made for the final 20 minutes, with Alvaro Negredo and Jordan Rhodes used up front, and Karanka also experimented by deploying left winger Adam Reach as a full-back as he seeks cover for first-choice left back George Friend.

The coach was happy enough with his side’s Spanish trip, saying:

“We have three weeks to fix one or two things. We still need players like Dani Ayala to recover – I don’t think Grant (Leadbitter) will be ready – but it’s good that we have three weeks to work at home.”

Centre-half Ayala, who has not featured in pre-season due to an ankle injury, is still ‘a week to 10 days’ away from selection, Karanka added.

Middlesbrough XI: Konstantopoulos (Mejias 70), Nsue (Barragan 70), Baptiste (Morris 70), Jackson (Gibson 70), Reach (Friend 70), Forshaw (Clayton 70), De Sart (de Roon 70), Stuani (Ramirez 70), Fischer (Negredo 70), De Pena (Adomah 70), Nugent (Rhodes 70).

Morning all, hope you're all well.

Best/most likely players to play, abiding by the following criteria:

    A) 4.0 defender
    B) 4.5 midfielder

      a) One of the Hull defenders, maybe?

      b) There are a few: Fletcher, Capoue, Hojbjerg etc. etc.

I'm currently on Hoj in midfield. Parades in defence, as are a lot of people, but unsure on his minutes personally. All will become clearer after gameweek 1 I guess. Didn't realise Capoue was 4.5 - he could interest me.

Do people not ever consider doubles up at the back.

I think a terry courtois or a shaw de gea combo could be a serious source of points

It's also relatively expensive and it means you can only have 1 mid/forward from high scoring teams such as CHE/MU

I was doubling up on WBA, but as long as it looks like Gabriel will be a long-ish term option for Arsenal, I'll be going with him instead.

Its is pricey but you have to pay for points in defense and attack.

I think given the huge prices for players this year il pick a strong 11 and a weak bench.

il wild card if it becomes an issue.

it is a bit pricey. I'm wary of terry this year. he's not getting any younger. kante will help the defence out, but they need some new blood.

I'd rather limit the 5,5+ players to 2, but if you're wildcarding early that's less significant

Maybe start out on KDB as it's easier to switch to Hazard if he's looking the better option after the season starts.

Oxford and Burke are 2 CB's but expect them to break into the first team this season. Ogbonna has played there before.

Bilic also uses 3-5-2 so Antonio and XXX as wingbacks. WOuld expect us to sign a replacement though.

Very much doubt it, has never played there before and lost his place very wuickly last season to antonio who isnt a natural RB.

Expect us to make a new signing tbh.

Ogbonna or Hendrie the only 2 we have who can cover there. Expect us to sign a new LB though. Brady has been heavily linked.

Hard to say, if desperate I guess Byram will play but then that only leaves him as the only fit full back ( I dont count Antonio) Not good. Could do with a new face one way or the other.

    Agonising over Foster/Heaton and Foster/Myhill.

Burnley and West Brom rotate very nicely home/away, but last season WBA kept more clean sheets away than at home. I'm a little concerned about benching points.

Is there merit in just playing Foster every week, and fitting a Burnley defender into a cheapie rotation?

Hate rotating keepers for this reason. Just play a decent one every week and have a cheap in reserve.

yeah it just saves you the headache deciding which keeper to play by playing Foster every week and bringing in the Burnley defender, but sometimes having the headache is half the fun of this game

Foster/jaku. Play foster every week then have mcauley/mee and double up on wba on the easy fixtures?
They rotate well but not always home and away, some weeks the wba away game is the more enticing fixture

Hey all, new to the site, please RMT!

    Valdes (Foster)
Shaw - Souare - Friend (Fernandez - Lenihan)
Townsend - Mahrez - Alli - Ayew (Capoue)
    Gray - Aguero - Ibrah

A few notes/thoughts, feel free to oppose:

    - Because It always ends up happening each season, I will be wildcarding after GW 3 but have built my team around that this time around. by then hopefully, the quality budget midfielder and striker have revealed themselves (inevitably not to be townsend and gray with my luck) and we have an idea how the promoted teams will perform and just how much chelsea/city/united have improved.

    - Chelsea players notably absent, have £0.5 in the bank to most likely transfer Mahrez into Hazard after GW 1. I just want to make sure the real Hazard turns up this season and that Conte gives him enough room to do his thing (also Mahrez v hull is too good to pass up this early). Even if he has a poor game against the hammers I'll probably still make the trade. I realise this is committing my first transfer rather early but I feel like I'd waste it regardless trying to pick the prospect of the season after GW 1 so I'm not too worried about this.

-Ibrah over Mhik because Mourinho will build around him, Ibrahimovic is the focus and will be fed constant quality and is a proven finisher.

-If swansea and palace sign a striker, Ayew will become Siggy and Townsend maybe into Deulofeu.

-Alli over Eriksen because even though Eriksen is a better player as of now, I feel he's a lot like Silva in the fact that this doesn't always translate into points, Obviously this is to a lesser degree than Silva, Eriksen still pulls a good haul. Last season though Eriksen setup a number of goals with a beautiful ball into Alli/Lamela/Walker/Rose who would end up assisting a goal but this counts for nothing in fantasy. This is less likely to happen to Alli purely because of his position and how much he pushes forward. Alli's link up play with Kane, quality attacking runs, presence in the box and the fact he plays centrally places him ahead of eriksen for me. Also his points per minute was better than Eriksen's last season.

-Lastly, a habit of mine is not playing forwards/midfielders against my defenders/goalkeepers. Therefore I'm banking on middlesbrough (home) getting a clean sheet simply because I don't want foster (away) against townsend.

    Thanks

Weak defence but maybe having Kun and Ibra is enough to compensate. I personally don't think Alli will score as highly this season and there are better options at 8.5 (Firmino for example). Also I am unconvinced by Townsend. Not bad overall though 🙂

For anyone sitting down to watch Spurs v Juve like I am, one player to watch out for (other than the obvious Wanyama/Janssen) is Cameron Carter-Vickers at CB.

Poch suggested last season that he's 4th choice centre back behind Wimmer, and may well end up playing some minutes this season if no other replacement is brought in for Alderweireld on the right side of defence. He's still only 18 so perhaps he would favour dropping Dier back in there if anything does happen to Toby, but certainly interesting to see how he does up against Dybala and co. today.

    DDG (Jakupovic)
    Gabriel Walker Stones (Naylor Paredes)
    Hazard Barkley Siggy Gradel (Watmore)
    Ibra Aguero Austin/6.5m

Comments would be appreciated, I've not looked at rotation etc. yet so if anyone has any advice in that regard it would be very helpful.
