Pre-Season

Sleeper – Eden Hazard

Our series of summer articles, focussing on Fantasy assets who underperformed in the previous season, gets underway with a look at Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

In spite of a hugely disappointing 2015/16 campaign, there’s no disputing the winger’s position as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) royalty.

Year on year, the Blues midfielder had upped his output after arriving at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2012/13 season – totals of 190, 202 and 233 points were indicative of his spot as one of the most explosive, and reliable, options for our five-man midfields.

Until last season.

Hampered by a hip problem, Hazard struggled for consistency of both output and pitch time.

The Belgian netted just once in the first 34 matches – courtesy of a deflected effort against Arsenal in Gameweek 6 – and toppled off our radars as the Blues’ title defence fell to pieces, ultimately leading to the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Although the arrival of Guus Hiddink helped steady the ship and transformed the likes of Willian as a viable route into the Chelsea midfield, Hazard failed to find his best form until the tail end of the season.

Four goals in the final five fixtures was too little, too late, though served a timely reminder of his talents as we headed into the close-season.

Delving into the data, Hazard’s creativity more or less stayed the same last term. Despite earning just five FPL assists, an average of 35.3 minutes per key pass was more or less identical to his 2014/15 numbers, where he teed up a team-mate every 35.6 minutes and created more chances (99) than any player in the top-flight.

The Belgian’s drop in goal threat was another matter altogether. Second only to Alexis Sanchez in midfield when in came to finding the net in 2014/15 (14 strikes to 16), he produced an effort every 45.2 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.

Last time around, Hazard fired an attempt every 64.8 minutes over his 31 appearances (25 starts) all season. Managing just 14 shots on target over the entire campaign, it’s fair to say that the winger has significant room for improvement as the Blues look to regroup under new manager Antonio Conte.

The Prospects

Having dropped in price to 10.0 in FPL, there’s no doubt that Hazard looks an enticing option for the upcoming campaign.

With Diego Costa seemingly edging towards the exit door and Michy Batshuayi settling into his new surrounds, the winger has already claimed 12% ownership – making him the tenth most popular midfielder to date.

Certainly, the Belgian could hardly have asked for a better start to life under Conte at the weekend.

Emerging from the bench to score twice in a half-hour cameo against Real Madrid, he was intriguingly handed a role through the middle in the new manager’s 4-2-4 formation and, according to the Italian, it’s a spot he could take up in the campaign ahead:

“Eden Hazard played 30 minutes and he is recovering a good shape. I like him in this position, like a forward, and he can be a good solution for us. Also playing as a winger. To play as a second forward he must improve his shape but he is working and he knows his shape can a lot in the same way as the other players.”

Clearly, Hazard’s appeal would merely be strengthened if he’s handed a more central role next time out. As it is, though, the Belgian’s history suggests he’ll be well worth the outlay even if he reprises his left flank berth, though Conte’s decision to move to two up front could force a reassessment of his side’s attack.

The Blues have mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation during Hazard’s time at the club and if Conte decides on two centre forwards, the likes of Batshuayi – at a price of 9.0 – could be promoted in our thinking. The new striker racked up 17 goals and nine assists for a Marseille outfit that finished just nine points clear of the drop zone last season and will look more assured of minutes if Costa departs.

Conte’s choice of number one spot-kick taker could sway opinion. Hazard was uncharacteristically poor from penalties last season but his previous record may well persuade the new manager to name him as first-choice.

This would also heighten his appeal when compared to other premium priced midfielders – at present, no other option in the centre of the park costing 9.5 and over is first-choice for spot-kicks at their respective club.

Although he returned late to training due to Belgium’s Euro 2016 progress, Hazard is hoping to start against AC Milan in midweek and is confident he’ll be ready in time for the Gameweek 1 trip to West Ham in a fortnight’s time.

Having served up 37 goals and 36 assists in the three seasons prior to the last one, there’s a hope that 2015/16 will be no more than an anomaly in Hazard’s Fantasy career.

For Conte, the upside of last year’s disastrous title defence means that Chelsea have no European matches on their agenda, allowing the new manager to focus fully on domestic matters.

With rest and rotation a non-factor, then, the omens are looking good that Hazard can rediscover his spark and offer us the option of a fixture-proof, big-hitter once again.

I think one very important point to consider when building a GW1 team is the flexibility to adapt.

How do we make our teams flexible? having a good distribution of funds between the four player groups

This is how my team looks:

    Goalkeepers: 8.5 (4.25 avg)
    Defenders : 23.0 (4.6 avg)
    Midfielders : 37.0 (7.4 avg)
    Forwards : 31 (10.3 avg.)

Already I can tell you that I need to shift some funds from forwards/mids to the backline.

As we all know, there are points to be earned from players on any position at any price point. The strategy of building a team good distribution of funds allows you to access players at any price point with one (or maybe two) transfers rather than picking your whole team apart.

If you look at my back like it is:
    Terry (5.5) Stones (5.0) 4.5, 4.5, 4.0

Now Imagine a 6.5 Defender (Toby/bellerin?) Becomes near essential, grabbing regular CS and goals/assists. I will literally need to change not only my defenders but also my midfielder or forwards just to get him in.

TLDR: Distribute your funds over goalkeepers, Defenders, Mid, and forwards well!

Also consider the fact that most of us make over 36 changes during the season. Change is a big factor of the game and facilitating it is crucial

I think this is over analysing things personally... I just try and normally fail to pick the best players I think will score the most points... If that so happens to fit into something like this then so be it...

I'd agree. Cash distribution across the 4 positions tends to migrate to where the points are, and this is constantly changing anyway - so there's no hard and fast rule for how it should be distributed for GW1.

I don't think can't defender is ever essential. There is always another who can do the job. If you are going to spread your money thinly do it there.

        Im not sure I agree,

last season Toby and Bellerin had 166/172 points respectively

The fourth highest mid last season had 171 points.

I'm not so sure it's the distribution of funds between the positions (GK, Def, Mid, Att), rather than the distribution of funds between the players in that particular position.

For example I had a distribution of:
      GK: 8.5
      Def: 23.5
      Mid: 38
      St: 30

But my midfield distribution was 9.5, 9, 7.5, 7.5, 4.5, which gave me some nerves about how I brought in someone like Hazard or a 5.5 like Mahrez who goes nuts.

I've played about with my squad and now I have:
      GK: 8.5
      Def: 23.5
      Mid: 37
      St: 31

Which is hardly a change at all, but crucially my midfield now is 10, 9.5, 7, 5.5 and 4.5, which means I can chop and change individual players far more easily. Bringing in the 10 (ok, its Hazard), also allows me to downgrade, which is easier than upgrade, and having the extra million in attack means Ibrahimovic comes into my team. Again, not massively convinced by his price tag, but I'd rather own him than not to start with and can downgrade.

So I think it's important to have players of the same position with different prices tags, rather than aim for middle ground.

    Foster / Jaku
    Shaw / Morgan / Friend / Moreno / Kone
Bolasie / De Bruyne / Hazard / Alli / Ayew
    Ibra / Long / Carroll

... getting there. Quite a cheap defence that rotate well.

If Williams goes to Everton my defence will likely be this:

    Valencia - Williams - Evans - Friend - Pieters

If Valencia doesn't look like being first choice RB I'll play safe with Shaw, and if Jones starts in the community shield I may take the 0.5m saving 🙂

Was great at the end of last season for BPs. I'm hoping Mourinho will give him licence to attack too - could be gold for assists with Ibra around.

Last season all he did was cut in and pass inside any time he got forward.

A lot of it is assumption right now.

I'm assuming if Williams is coming in then Stones is likely leaving.

He will have competition but I expect him to be first choice with Jags/Mori sharing the other spot. I could be wrong though - an Everton fan may have different thoughts

Willams' BAP whorage for Swansea might not necessarily translate into the same for Everton. I'll keep an eye on that because without BAPS he's just a bog standard CB who doesn't have great goalscoring record.

Thanks Birds of Prey - appreciate it. Yeah, wary of Foster AND Evans. Hoping another 4.5 defender emerges over the coming weeks, then I'll reassess. Would be very convenient if Holding kept his place in the Arsenal line-up ... wishful thinking! Went to Fulham v Palace friendly on Saturday and Palace defence was pretty dodgy - Dann and Ward have goal/assist potential but Souare could just be relying on appearance points. May be different when Mandanda/Hennessey return - Speroni had a shocker.

Surely having a 4m bench fodder isn't a big deal, realistically how often are you going to use your bench and what's the chances of the player getting you more than 2 points...low right?

Why not spend the .5 on say Morgan to Fuchs who guarantees (not 100% true but you get the idea) about 10 points more over the first 7 weeks?

depends on the strategy that you are going to employ...some will want to make use of the first few weeks to build up their transfer value so that when eventually they WC, they are able to re-deploy their assets and may choose a 4m bench fodder after.

For those in the "rotation never works camp" - what do you base your defensive choices on if it's not fixtures?

this, the amount of times I;ve tried rotating cheap defenders and ending up with blanks or worse 6pts left on the bench.
less of a headache to have 3 solid CBs and 1 solid GK.

    Can I get a RMT? ^^

    Valdes (jaku)
Stones - Shaw - Fernandez (Mcauley, Paredes)
Eriksen - Hazard - Tadic - Townsend (Fletcher)
    Ibra - Aguero - Gray

Subs are a bit weak but normally theres a wildcard about gameweek 3 🙂

to do that you have to downgrade either Mkhi/KDB/Ozil....would choose Ozil as he's not guaranteed to start in the first week i think...Dann or Evans

Exactly. That's one of the big frustrations of the game. Impulsive, trigger-happy FPL players putting prices up, before the first GW is even completed! I think FPL should consider a price-freeze until the transfer window has closed (or something like that).

I've got to say, this is the most fun team I've seen in a while. Risky as hell, but potentially very rewarding. People avoiding Deeney because of fixtures, but even if Watford get stuffed 10-1 every week, you'd fancy Troy to score or assist the one goal. Despite the Euros, there is NO WAY Payet is going to settle for a place on the bench in GW1! GK's a bit of a luxury, perhaps downgrade Schmeichel. It's not a team for everyone, but perhaps dare to be different.

De Bruyne to hazard for 0.5.
Not keen on Gabriel, so save 0.5 there.
Evans instead of McCauley - he's 35 now, so won't play every week.
I have no problem with 6.5 and 5.5 mids in 3rd and 4th spots - as the game unfolds, you can transfer in the best at those prices. e.g. Townsend to Deulofeu/Rodriguez/Redmond/Noble or Feghouli to Philips, Gradel, Ibe etc.

    What do you guys think?

    Foster Heaton
    Terry Baines Valencia (Hernandez Tarkowski)
    Hazard Chamberlain Deulofeu KDB (McManaman)
    Aguero Austin Rooney

I'm thinking OX will be really strong at the start of the season - players will be out like Cazorla and Ozil and he's been playing really well in pre-season and has a point to prove! He's only 6.0 and will start for Arsenal in the first few games.

My advice to you lads! - PUT CHAMBERLAIN IN YOUR TEAM!

    Hi Guys

    What do you think ?

i Tried to focus on players who are doing the preseason and will be fit for GW1.

    Foster/Jakupovic

Terry / Shaw / Funes Mori / Friend / Byram (or Souare)

    Silva / Couthino / William / Ayew / Feghouli

    Aguero / Negredo / Carroll

    3.0 in the bank

my bigger concern is my third forward.

in my opinion Lukaku Kane vardy Costa and Giroud won't play GW1 and don't want to put Ibra (to expensive for a balanced team)

    What do you think ?

    am i wrong ?

think playing my WC in GW4

    Thank you

Why won't Lukaku, Kane, Vardy or Giroud not play first gameweek? Maybe not Giroud cos of the Euros but the others should.

Because Kane, Vardy and Giroud didn't play any minutes of the preseason and Lukaku only 60 minutes.
GW1 is in 10 days so IMO it will be to short to be fit.

Hmmm interesting - I had no idea! Strange. Surely they'll be on some intensive fitness regime now? But yeh a bit of a risk for sure. I'd suggest Rooney - I put him in mine. He's scoring in pre-season, taking pens and playing with Ibra will get the best out of him. He's only 9.0 - same as Lukaku 🙂

yes i was thinking of Rooney too but not sure about is position in the field with Mourinho.
But yes is the best option if i want to upgrade one of my forwards.

I got stung by Rooney and Kane last season. They seemed the obvious options with the likes of Aguero, Sturridge and Sanchez injured. Rooney - like the rest of his team - was rubbish, and Kane didn't score his second goal of the season until 26th October v Bournemouth (albeit a hatrick).

Hey guys been lurking around for hours but I really need help on the following:

    1) In defence, I am quite settled with Shaw,Williams,Friend & Paredes but I am not entirely sure with the last slot. I have a budget of 5.0 and
Stones looks great value but I agree with some of the folks here that he might not start at City if the move goes through. Any good alternative for a 5.0 defender? Would Morgan be a good choice or that is too last season thinking? Should I go with say Evans or Pieters and save the 0.5 dime for midfield?

2)I have decided to go with 5.5 goalie but I am not sure who should I go with? Courtois or Cech? (no DDG since I have decided to pick Shaw and dont want to double team MU)

    3) In MF, which combo should I pick? a) Ozil Hazard Ibe b) Ozil Mahrez Redmond or c)Hazard Lamela Tadic???
Planning to partner these 3 with Leko and Deulofeu. Really Cant decide.Tadic and Lamela are both solid choices but the lure of Ozil/Mahrez to partner Hazard is really hard for me to turn down....

      1) In my opinion you should try and get defenders who will keep clean sheets (obviously!) but may also score - I've got Baines and Terry (Terry might not start every game but will start the first few and Baines/Coleman will score - all are 5.5. Maybe get Schlupp who looks like he's going to West Brom - he could also play as a mid so could get points.

      2) I feel you should have two 4.5 keepers - teams like Burnley, West Brom etc will keep clean sheets and being able to rotate will mean you will probably get as many points as if you had Cech or Courtois.

      3) I think Ibe is quite hit and miss (although a great prospect). C looks to be the best i think. I like Deulofeu (looks good in pre season) - have you thought about the Ox for Arsenal?

If i drop kane to gray...

    i can upgrade tadic/ayew to KDB + 1.5 to upgrade my very uber def (4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0 4.0)...

On paper it seem like a good choice to downgrade 1 for the upgrade...

but kane gw2 captaincy option is really tempting...

    any idea??

ps. the rest of my team is

    rooney aguero
    hazard mahrez fisher capoue
    foster jak

Yes, definitely do that - balance is very important in FPL, especially if you don't want to WC early.

As you say, it's not just a question of Kane to Gray.

You could go from A: Kane, Tadic, Lenihan, Wollscheid (for example)
To B: Gray, De Bruyne, Evans, Shaw/Van Dyk/Walker/Baines etc ... so much better
