The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

The Stock Check makes a return to these pages for the new campaign. Working in tandem with the Watchlist, this offers a same day appraisal of how the day’s matches influenced our view on players and teams.

On a tepid opening day, significant in the main for Leicester City’s defeat at Hull, we nonetheless witnessed a number of players boost early reputations, as a cast of mid-price midfielders and strikers came to the fore.

On the Rise

Nathan Redmond
Redmond overcame first half struggles to burst to life in the second period with a Saints equaliser. His underlying numbers were hugely encouraging – both in terms of creativity and threat. Available for 6.0, Redmond will likely curb interest in Dusan Tadic who also stood out in the 1-1 stalemate.

Riyad Mahrez
Mahrez’s return to penalty duties having relinquished them to Jamie Vardy in the latter part of last season was a huge break for his early adopters. We can now expect the 2% ownership gap between Mahrez and Vardy to open up further.

Ahmed Musa
Leicester’s record signing was thrown straight into the starting lineup at the KCOM stadium following an impressive pre-season. At 7.5 he’s an option in his own right but could also impact on Vardy’s output. He created more than he threatened in today’s defeat.

Demarai Gray
Ranieri made a statement by including the 20-year-old in his starting line-up – clearly Marc Albrighton’s start, at least away from home, now looks very tenuous. Gray is a 5.0 midfield option, fetched an assist and demands to be monitored.

Étienne Capoue
Two goals in a pre-season and a fine opening day effort. Capoue already looks to have established himself as the stand-out 4.5 option in midfield having been given license to join the attack in Walter Mazzarri’s 3-5-2.

Robert Snodgrass
The key figure in the Hull ranks, the former Leeds man hogged set-pieces throughout and provided the shock decisive strike. The three bonus points sealed his day and ensured a rise in stock.

Alvaro Negredo
A debut strike for the Spaniard who leapt to head home Gaston Ramirez’ assist. He was one of several mid-price strikers to flourish on the day, although arguably his forthcoming fixtures (sun wba CPL eve) promote him as the most attractive of that pack. Negredo soared to the top of the FPL “transfers in” hours after the final whistle.

Eric Lamela
The Argentine went into Gameweek 1 with 9% ownership as the fourth most popular Spurs midfielder. He followed up his five goals and nine assists last season with a headed equaliser at Goodison. Lamela showed enough to suggest that his £7.0m price tag could possibly see him challenge Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen (both 8.5) as the go-to Spurs midfield candidate.

Ross Barkley
A goal, four attempts and three chances created. Once again Barkley has started the season strongly – he’s now scored on the opening day for three consecutive seasons. Again, it suggests that he can deliver on his 7.5 price point but we’ve been here before. Deulofeu’s potential as a 6.5 midfield option deployed as a striker, remains a factor.

Salomon Rondon
Another 6.5 striker option to find the net, the Venezuelan boosted his stock following nine goals last season with a day one winner and a pair of bonus points. Like Negredo, the Baggies man boasts obliging forthcoming fixtures (EVE MID bou WHM).

The West Brom Defence
Tony Pulis’ side claimed the day’s other shut-out in the win at Crystal Palace with Ben Foster fetching the maximum bonus points. Gareth McAuley also earned bonus and remains the top owned West Brom defensive asset (9%). Their schedule suggests that further returns are imminent.

Shaqiri
The Swiss international hardly glittered in the Riverside stalemate and yet his curling free-kick brought him to our attention. Stoke’s fixtures are set to improve and further returns from Shaqiri could see the 6.0 midfielder unsettle Marko Arnautovic (7.5) as our chosen Potters asset.

Jordi Amat
Swansea had two 4.0 options earn clean sheets at Burnley, with Stephen Kingsley also fetching two bonus points. But Amat appears to have a stronger chance of retaining his start and warrants monitoring; he was the stand-out performer in the Swans’ rearguard.

Fernando Llorente
A promising debut for the Spaniard which saw him register an assist for Leroy Fer’s late goal. Llorente’s statistics were very promising and indicated that he’s another name in the mid-price that demands assessment.

Willy Caballero
Ousting Joe Hart to the bench, the Argentine could now present another 5.0 option in Pep Guardiola’s rearguard to rival Jon Stones. Doubts remain on City’s defence, however.

Sergio Aguero
Aguero’s stock is already sky high but it seems remiss not to mention the Argentine given his nine point return. This was not one of his more eye-catching shifts and yet still had six efforts on goal, a total matched only by Llorente over Saturday’s matches. Handed the armband by 34% of FPL managers, he duly delivered his expected strike.

Raheem Sterling
The assist for Aguero’s spot-kick was just part of a performance that drew glowing praise from his manager. Can Guardiola revive a player who was once pushing heavy-hitter status at Liverpool? Priced at 8.0, if the Spaniard can achieve that, we will have yet another midfield asset to consider.

In Decline

Jamie Vardy
Owners of the 10.0 striker suffered a sobering day as they witnessed Vardy miss several opportunities and, more significantly, relinquish spot-kick duties to Mahrez. A decline in ownership looks inevitable, even with back-to-back home matches to come. Vardy was top of the “transfers out” table at the time of writing.

The Leicester Defence
Claudio Ranieri’s assets are suffering sales from back to front, with diminishing confidence in the Foxes backline following the reversal on Humberside. N’Golo Kante’s absence already seems to be a factor.

Joe Hart
Dropped to the bench by Pep Guardiola, the 5.5 keeper option went into Gameweek 1 claiming 6.9% ownership: they must surely now be planning an immediate exit.

Hugo Lloris
Another keeper to suffer a blow, the Frenchman was forced to give way on 30 minutes with a hamstring injury. He’ll undergo scans, with Michel Vorm (5.0) destined to deputise during any term of absence – a situation worth monitoring.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The members area needs to update the Sky FF section. It's not acknowledging the new tiered bonus points system.

Friday night game next week is gonna be huge for me:
Valencia, VVD, Redmond, Tadic and Ibra (maybe C if he looks good today) :O

Although I'm tempted to play Amat (HUL) over VVD...

Hmm I'd have to drop McAuley (EVE) or even Tadic/Redmond but they all looked good today. Don't want to miss out on another double West Brom CS but I guess it'll be the safe option.

Basing this off MOTD mind, but Gray didn't look bad, looks like he can cut it at this level and will probably be the primary source of Burnley's goals. I'd need to see more to properly judge.

Hours went into this. Not a "screw it i'm just gonna play BB for lols."

My whole man 15 man squad has been planned for 3 weeks (GW4 WC with a GW1 BB in mind).

Even if the BB got mt 12 i'd still be fine with it. Means i can play my second WC during the actual main DGW instead of a week before like most here will. People will be transferring out good players just so they can DGW'ers the next week. Heaps of rotation at the end of the season aswell, not many will actually have 15 guys playing twice.

Certainly restricts it. You'll be making compromises because you're trying to get 15 good players. I'm only trying to get 11. I'll have more budget to spend on the top players, less prone to rotation.

Top players will be more prone to rotation as they're more likely to be needed in other more important competitions.

Nah, can't see it. PL is most imporant for a lot of these managers.

It's much easier trying to pick 11 nailed on players than it is picking 15 nailed on players with roughly the same budget. If you are arguing that, I think you might not be the sharpest tool in the shed.

Balders you have made the error mate. Chill out. You said "12 points is way undervaluing the BB." That is the value in a SGW. Ruth has valued at 24 in a DGW which is what you agree with. So read properly mate 🙂

                      • 10 Years
                      7 years, 8 months ago

you don't have multiple BBs though. 12 points is about par for a sgw BB, but 24 points is its par in a dgw. You can choose either or but taking the lesser option is, well, undervaluing your BB.

You said "Even if the BB got mt 12 i'd still be fine with it." I would not be fine with 12 points from a BB, that's a further potential 12 points down the drain from not playing it in a dgw.

People are completely missing the point.

-Compromises to WC a week before BB
                        -Likely hits taken after BB

Not worth chasing a 12 point "advantage"

                        That is Ruth's whole argument.

                        • 10 Years
                        7 years, 8 months ago

And the whole argument's flawed IMO because it is worth the 12 point advantage.

I WC'd 2 weeks early and moved from 40k to 24k in those two SGWs ahead of the dgw because I still held onto the likes of Kane and Mahrez. The week afterwards my hit was because of a drugs ban entirely unrelated to the fixture pile up so go figure.

Maybe you would have moved from 40k to 10k?

Fair play for holding on. A lot of people didn't. It is very subjective this discussion unforunately because it's pretty impossible to have this whole thing statically based.

I respect your posts Balders and think you are a good manager. Best of luck. And to our Arsenal boys (we will need more than that unfortunately)

I saw him talking about it a lot. My two cents are that if you have a higher TV later in the season you can afford better players thus a stronger bench. So my interpretation of his argument is play your BB whenever you want and don't base your WC around it. So id rather play it late when I can afford a better bench

Nothing wrong with that intepretation. My personal preference is to plan for it. Maximises the potential and doing it early with a GW4 WC means it doesn't have a lingering effect - I don't really want my bench this expensive for long

Well done on an excellent start. 😉

Unfortunately I stopped reading Ruth's posts after he left here last season and went on FISO and bashed and bagged all the mods and members here. He then got booted from there and has now returned to FFS.

Sorry but I didn't appreciate the way he spoke about everyone here when he was at FISO so I've boycotted his posts. They're too long winded anyway, lol.

        Cheers mate 🙂

He is not the most popular character around and I've had plenty of disagreements with him in the past. After I read that post though, I was convinced that BB DGW was a poor tactic.

I'm not convinced it's a poor DGW tactic, as I got 190pts from using it last season and had a massive OR leap that saved my season really.

I guess there's really no definitive right or wrong time to use it and we'll all use it when we feel the time is right.

Glad it worked well for you and the popular bench choices returned the goods. It was a ballsy move and well rewarded. 😉

I haven't been booted from FISO so that's a factual error.

I didn't "bash" FFS members either. I did make some comments about the FFS herd mentality and the effect it can have on price movements. I think those comments were valid. So that's a matter of opinion and mine is different to yours.

I came back to FFS as FISO was very quiet during the summer and I was playing Euro fantasy. I have put up very few long posts since returning but "boycott" them by all means.

FISO is another forum that deals with most fantasy games.

It has some nice members but also some very opinionated members who don't like hearing differing opinions. They can also get a little nasty if you tend to disagree with some general discussions.

Ruth had numerous run ins there which was amusing, lol. 🙂

I didn't fancy Swansea defence after Williams left. I didn't fancy a double WBA defence away at Palace. Both would have been fine as it turned out. 😕

In addition there were one or two players I wasn't 100% sure would start. BB GW3 looked safer and I constructed my squad with that in mind.

Nab took the punt on Kingsley and it worked out great for him. Fair do's.

Fair enough. I was similar. My bench is currently on 16 with 1 to play on there, so it probably would have worked, but never mind! Do you mind divulging who you needed up selecting in the end (as a bit of context to who I did thats all), or would you rather not say?

BB was worth 48 points for me in the DGW last season... I got lucky, yes, but I'm preserving it in the hope of getting lucky again. I'd be 3rd in the world if I'd played it today, mind you...

Have you factored in the effect of wildcarding the week before and the points that cost? Have you factored in the hits you (probably) had to take afterwards in order to re-balance? Unless you do that the DGW score is no basis of comparison. 😕

Nab has no hidden costs for his 24-point BB. No hits needed. No compromise of his team for GW2 and GW3. And then a wildcard before GW4. So it's a pure +24. 🙂

I read your first post and I was interested in the line of thinking but there is a butterfly effect to any of these scenarios, so it's pretty difficult to say which one is better. The use of it even in gw1 isn't pure if it is connected to an early wild card after gw3. What bandwagons will be missed? What TV will be lost? What transfers will or will not be able to be made because of the use of the chip?

I think what goes under-discussed in general with chip usage late in the season is that after a run of DGWs, most teams are quite similar, regardless of which chip or how many hits someone took. Overall points and rank are really the only metrics that work -- the rest is some portion of conjecture because none of the moves ever exist in isolation.

Just read Ruth's post. Some nice points, there.
Great week, Nabs, but I still firmly believe that the BB is best for the dgw. It's true that using it around the dgw may compromise the weeks before and after. But that is just a matter of team management and planning.

Time will tell, of course, but you may be cursing your decision later in the season.
Last year's bench boost in the dgw got me 35 points. Some luck involved, for sure, but I'd rather roll the dice with dgw players.

Fair enough but you have completely missed the point then. Even if most get 35 on the bench (highly unlikely) I still win going by Ruths post.

-Compromises to WC a week before BB
          -Likely hits taken after BB

Not worth chasing a 12 point "advantage"

            • 11 Years
            7 years, 8 months ago

The 12-point advantage is not what you should be looking at. The median might be 12, but the ceiling is far, far higher in a dgw. Aguero does not score his average score every week, the scores are much more distributed. Even more so with less consistent players.
With dgw players, you are giving yourself twice as many opportunities to hit a big score. If you want to give yourself higher odds of winning the lottery, buy more tickets.
Another point is that you budget can go much farther later in the season. For the dgw, my team value was 107, if I'm not mistaken. The bench players no longer need to be useless bench fodder at that stage.

              Finally, an intelligent response thankyou.

Excellent point on the ceiling. Definitely something that should be factored in a bit more. I personally think it is almost impossible to end up with 15 playing twice due to end of season rotations, suspensions and injuries catching up with players.

But it definitely adds some value to the DGW BB. Agreed.

I wouldn't rule out having another West Brom defender. Pulis always has a good defence and double West Brom would have worked for me if I didn't bench McAuley.

Having said that, a lot of popular picks did well for a GW1 (Redmond, Lamela, West Brom defence)

My lesson learnt from initial team setup.

    1. Initially i'm on Lamela, Redmond, Hazard n Costa. I want Ramsey on my team as a differential but couldn't fit in the budget. These player have been on my watchlist because of good run in pre-season plus other factor.

    2. After the article on "transfer your cash to midfielder" came up, i said why not?

    3. So i change Costa to Diomande. That free up 5m in cash!

    4. This is where i became spendfhrift. Instead of just upgrading Gradel to Ramsey, i said why not revamp the whole midfield line up?

    5. So i did this:
    -Lamela upgrade to Alli
    -Redmond upgrade Tadic
-Hazard downgrade to Oscar (need a chelsea player)
    -Ramsey upgrade to Sanchez
    -Firmino stays
    (Left with 0.5 itb)

    6. Now that's a solid midfielder lineup!
    Sanchez-Firmino-Alli-Oscar-Tadic. What could go wrong?

    7. After the first day have ended, and with Lamela and Redmond scoring, i learned a few things:
    a) extra cash does not mean we have to spend it all.
    b) always trust your instict and analysis (We put players in watchlist for a good reason)
    c) articles, infos and insight might be useful but don't let them overcloud your principle. But it should help with help with your judgement and decision making.

But hey, i'm not gonna blame anyone on my decision!

Moving forward, i do have some positive thoughts:

    a) This is just the first game, got 37gw more. Give the players time to show their true value.

    b) still got Sanchez, Firmino and Oscar to play. What could go wrong, right? (Better score well!)

    c) by having pricey player, it's always easy to downgrade to lower priced yet performing players.

    d) and with that i'm hoping for Diomande price hike. Any luck?!

Yes sometime it is best to stick with your instincts.

Yesterday I took what I considered a quite exciting innovative team (Aguero - Vardy - Ibrahimovic front line) and sanitised it spreading the money about to balance it more prettily.

I then wrote it down and looked at it.

It bored me to look at it so I changed it all back!

Just because everyone else is doing something does not make it right

Now I have 53 points with 3 good players left to play.

Agree with the "extra cash doesn't mean you have to spend it".

I have Aguero, Ibra and Hazard but still have 1.5m in the bank with so many decent cheap options (Lamela, Redmond, Tadic). Easy for me to say in hindsight though! (and your expensive options could go ham tonight too)

Redmond OoP and cheaper. Also Tadic is generally considered a better option than Long for Soton coverage too.

In the 6.5 striker price bracket I'd rather have Gray/Negredo

Don't think you need to drop him just yet, but if there's not a pressing other move could be a good idea to move on.

I had my worries about Burnley's supporting act to Gray, there just isn't enough quality/creativity around him and it's a similar side to the last time they were in the league.

2 tough GWs for Gray with Pool and Chelsea coming up but could easily go big in GW4 at home against Hull.
The only thing is if I can be patient enough to hold off my itchy trigger finger on Negredo etc.

Having watched the highlights I only saw Negredo have a couple of shots, other than the goal he did not do a lot - but goals are all that count.

Grey looked lively, problem is Burnley looked very poor. With Pool and Chelsea on the way I can see him dropping .2

Rondon in the 6.5 bracket impressed me the most tbh

I'll have some cash if I downgrade a defender to Amat. Wondering if Defoe might be the way forward for the third striker spot.

Please Note: The ability to input your FPL team ID and load your team will be enabled once your team is locked down and the season begins. This will be once the Gameweek 1 deadline on August 13 has passed. For now, you can construct your team manually to analyse its RMT score - click here or on Build My Team in the menu to start adding players.

So why is it not working?

Left a note with RMT Professor. Perhaps the coding is different with the new site.

Members area going to 💩 as Mark goes mass market. A TV slot and all the DFS affiliate pay does better than selling OPTA data.

Is there a Fantasy Olympics? Would be pretty funny.

2 for bronze, 5 for silver, 10 for gold. OR extra 5, WR another extra 5.

If you captained Phelps in Beijing, he would have being ridiculous, would be more expensive than Aguero and Ibra put together though.

That would be equally hilarious. At least everyone will be expert's at analysing their performance even if fitness is an issue.

The thing is the different events it would require owning a lot of difefrent players.

It would have to be a daily fantasy thing with only the players available for that day. Also there are qualifying rounds? Could that be incorporated?

      The idea is intersting.

I always liked the idea of fantasy Worlds Strongest Man

Yeah the no clear "GW" would mean daily tinkering which would only work for us hardcore players.

I think qualifying would be too hard to incorporate. Maybe you have to pick your athletes before qualifying and athlete's with a good chance of qualifying would be a lot more expensive. Actually, having qualifying would make it much more interesting since only a handful are actual medal chances, points for qualifying would make for more variety in pick atheletes.

...I'm putting way too much thought into this haha

It's so tempting to ditch Vardy before he drops to 9.9 , but I know , as soon as I get him off for a plonker like Negredo, a brace is imminent.

I honestly have no clue at this stage. I may choose to sell him or keep him against what in theory is a weakened Arsenal defence. If they can keep pool out though and someone like Costa plays well I might ditch him price drop or not.

he probably score v Arsenal, that should be on open game and plenty of space for Vardy to get into v thin defence.

I agree. Can't see Arsenal plonking everyone behind the ball like Hull and Arsenal definitely won't hold back from attacking Leicester's defence after seeing their Hull performance.

I think this match will be much more open and with Bellerin and Monreal playing so high it should open up more space for Musa and Vardy to work with.

I currently have Musa and Mahrez and will be giving them another shot at it.

Surely it's better to wait til the international break?

Only one GW worth of data is a small sample size. Also, just wait til you see Hull sign Messi on deadline day, you'd regret not holding off on the WC 😉

It isn't a burden at all. It is an opportunity to be sprung open when you most need it.
