The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Before the League began one thing I told myself was not to panic and take hits so early in the season if things go wrong.

Decided to go with Aguero + Vardy + 1ITB and Gray up top. Vardy blanking was a bit disappointing, the whole leicester team was.
My plan was to switch Vardy to Kane (c) for GW2.

Kane was not great. Ibra scored.
    Now a bit confused.

Stick with the plan ? Vardy > Kane
I could not watch the CPL match. How were they defensively ?

Same front 3 and I'm sticking with Vardy against ARS.. without Kosc, ARS def is a joke.

Kosc, Ozil, Giroud, Xhaka might all be in their starting line up. The former three for sure. Also Mustafi might start too if they sign him in the next couple of days. Arsenal on the whole would be a better team.

To be fair, Vardy could have had a couple... and not taking the Pen was a double blow.

I am inclined to keep him vs the gunners, save the FT and let it ride one more week.

Same. Have 1.5 in bank so could do Vardy to anyone with 2 trades the following week. Don't want to lose value though

Got the exact same dilemma atm. Had Kane in all of my initial drafts but decided to change to Vardy purely because they were playing Hull, and then with the plan to go to Kane in GW2.

Home against Palace looks enticing but I'm worried I'll want to do another trade after next week and that maybe Ibra is the right way to go. On the other hand I'll massively regret keeping Vardy for this week if Kane kills it.

Makes Vardy to him ever so tempting, even though I reckon Vardy will do okay v Arsenal

Inter Milan are hoping to lure Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez to San Siro before the transfer window closes on August 31, according to reports in Fichajes.net.

The Chile international, 27, is currently in discussions with the Gunners about extending is contract at the Emirates, which runs until the summer of 2018.
However, the Serie A club would have to fork out €80m to land the player, while also paying him wages of €8m-a-year, a record for the Italian top flight.

He should have been sacked after that match.

Credit to his players for fighting back, and if I was an Arsenal supporter I wouldn't be upset at my players as they could have easily just rolled over and got smashed.

The players showed heart, but the manager showed he's past being able to cope with this high pressing, high pressure style of football and had no plan or strategy to deal with it.

I'd be calling for his head.

Although my rank isn't as strong as some of the others here, got Williams coming back, LFC points will get scattered so happy with Roberto.

Easy to get caught timbo but I think we'll see a lot more of this from Leicester this year.

What I noticed from the stats was that they had 50% or so possession which was usually about 33% last season. I think Hull sat back and defended a lot more not committing men forward which meant it was much more difficult for Leicester to counter. I think they also hadUchida more chances than they would have had in this type fixture last season too but again they were volleys or shots under pressure rather than the one on ones they were getting last year. I'm staying well clear until I see if they can develop their game to score well against teams that do this to them.

It's a good point and I think they will mix it up more. Vardy did have his chances though, it's just the way it goes.

Yeah he could easily have had a brace tbf, just not sure if the chances he was getting were as clean as the ones he was getting in this type of fixture last season. Might be nothing in it but defo worth keeping an eye on.

They also played with no recognized holding mid and therefore had no one protecting the back four or breaking up play in midfield to release Vardy quickly.

As a result Hull had a field day in the middle of the park and controlled most of the game despite having the lower possession percentage.

I expect Leicester to rectify this problem by bringing in Mendy and Huth, and Hull won't get it that easy against other teams.

To be fair Hull are rubbish and I expect them to go down this year so the fact the Leicester struggled is even more pronounced.

I think it was more to do with Hull not committing numbers forward than Leicester not having a holding mid that meant Leicester weren't able to counter as quickly though and I think a lot more teams will not be embarrassed to park the bus v them this season compared to last.

Formula to beat Leicester = park bus, double or triple mark Mahrez -> job done.

If there is one lesson I have learnt from FPL, nothing is a foregone conclusion...

Vardy was a bit unlucky I reckon, and didn't take the pen. On another week who knows.

    Should I be swapping out...

    B long for negredo

I wouldn't do either for now.

Tadic got MOTM and played very well plus Gray had 50% of Burnelys chances and they were all inside the box. The points will come for both of them IMO

I will keep Tadic. If I had Long would like Llorente or Rondon. Rondon for fixtures

finally i made my choice of using FT replacing fuchs with walker

    DeGea, Jaku
    VVD, Friend, Walker, Stones, Paredes
    Hazard, Tadic, Firmino, Capoue, Fletcher
    Aguero, Ibra, Gray

just not getting the setup for next week, any suggestions

Anybody talking about WCing now is mental, imo. We saw last year how valuable it was to have a WC for the dgw (185 points for me), why would you use it now, and not follow the usual pattern of using it ~ mid-season, when things are a bit more settled in terms of solid defensive teams.

There won't be any dgws in time for first wc and those of us who've had shockers of course we're gonna consider it

      1. johnbarnes
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

yes but that means you're not using a WC from now until the dgw in April. + what if this gw was a blip, and the players that had a shocker this week-end start firing again next saturday? Keep jerking that knee...

Never said i was gonna do it just that its tempting. There's always merit in saving it of course there is but if your team needs surgery then it might be a good move.
