Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 1

We bring our Gameweek 1 retrospective to a close with the Digest, assessing the player, the team and the talking point that stood out when the dust settled on the first ten matches.

The Player

There’s no doubt that, at his best, Philippe Coutinho is a magician.

Yet the Brazilian has rarely been able to bewitch the majority of Fantasy Football managers.

Most of us are aware of his qualities but also that, for all those burgeoning goal attempt statistics, his threat is often from 25 yards or more.

That wasn’t a problem at the Emirates on Saturday. Coutinho almost defied physics to curl the ball at pace into the top corner of Petr Cech’s net, inches inside the post. It was a moment of pure brilliance.

His second goal was perhaps more significant.

This saw Coutinho steal into the Arsenal box to add the decisive glancing touch to a quite brilliant multi-pass move. It was the kind of goal we rarely associate with Coutinho – the type he will need to score more of if he is to genuinely threaten a shift into the heavy-hitter bracket.

There are still doubts that this is a possible transition. We’re expecting Coutinho to frustrate his army of eager investors and for both Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to surpass his output.

We could be wrong.

Coutinho’s talent is not in question and if Jurgen Klopp is able to drive the playmaker to raid the box and register goals to add to his long-range efforts, he could make that step up.

This week’s knee jerk transfer could be a masterstroke and his bandwagon may only pick up speed come the final whistle at Turf Moor.

The Team

While Liverpool’s performance and bewildering cast of options are deserving of our attention, Hull City’s display in beating Leicester City can’t be ignored.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will likely be our focus on numerous occasions this season – that may not be the case with the Tigers.

Even so, Mike Phelan’s side suggested that we’re already guilty of writing them off far too early.

As a source of Fantasy talent, they are unlikely to set the world alight and yet in Robert Snodgass they clearly have a key player who could yet push for inclusion in our squads.

A broken knee cap robbed the Scot of a full season with Hull in the Premier League last time out – his commitment in Saturday’s win over the Foxes was indicative of a player with something to prove.

Certainly his command of set-pieces will have few peers throughout the league.

Snodgrass appeared to take corners from both right and left and was undisputedly the player to seize the ball when in range of the opponents’ goal.

His second half winner demonstrated a talent to find the net and, at 5.5, Snodgrass demands further monitoring when Hull’s fixtures and squad depth improves.

Elsewhere in Phelan’s line-up, the options are scarce, although in Curtis Davies they have a defender who offers goal threat and who can dominate clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI). Even at 5.0, he could factor in our thinking should the Tigers enter a period that resembles Watford’s mid-season in 2015/16, where grinding results to achieve survival becomes the overriding objective.

The Talking Point

While both Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic warmed up for a season-long battle with a goal apiece, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy were already left in their wake.

The England pair suffered troubling weekends as Fantasy assets.

Vardy missed several “big chances” and then surrendered spot-kick duties to Riyad Mahrez. In doing so, he sealed his fate for many FPL managers who immediately parted company.

The merits of that decision will be known in the coming weeks – maybe even on Saturday, as Leicester host a troubled Arsenal defence – the first of four home matches in the next six Gameweeks.

Kane’s weekend was less catastrophic but similarly concerning.

Having suffered an abject Euro 16 campaign, Kane’s touch and confidence showed little signs of revival as he struggled to make an impression.

Tottenham’s fortunes were improved with the introduction of new signing Vincent Jansssen and that saw Kane drop even deeper in a bid to influence play, taking him further away from the Everton goal.

We saw Kane draw blanks in the first six Gameweeks of last season before breaking free with a flurry of goals. He’s a striker who lives on confidence and who can transform overnight to an almost unstoppable force.

Saturday’s display indicated he was somewhat short of that level – the statistics showed he failed to register a single effort on goal.

The White Hart Lane meeting with Crystal Palace already looks vital to his early season prospects and the 19% who showed the faith with their initial squads.

Gray had plenty of chances last week, is home to a shoddy Poop defense this week and Hull in GW4. Don't burn transfers.

Morning! Pretty happy but have a plan based on gut instinct. ( Just think Delouf a bad pick)

    This week-
    Delouf to Ramirez

Leaves 2M ITB. Enough to survive a few falls/rises and if needed later-
    Vardy to Ibra
    Gary to another 6.5

    Foster
    Amat Shaw Williams
    Hazard Tadic Eriksen Delouf
    Vardy Aguero Gray

Jakop Capoue Stones Friend 1M ITB

Bench for this GW is Jakup (Swansea away), Friend (Sunderland away), Jagielka (West Brom away), Capoue (Chelsea away).

Now i wouldn't normally play any chips this early, but given the above bench fixtures, could this be a decent GW to use bench boost in your opinion? Especially if you've taken a -4 to try and offset the point deduction?

and i know i know, points hit already, but may as well take them early instead of later if you are going to do so.

It would make sense to save this chip maybe for a double GW, but more than likely if your trailing by then anyway it wouldn't make that much of a difference, plus there's no banking on if most of your bench would have worthy fixtures?

Would like to hear some thoughts on this, or if anyone else is thinking of doing the same? 🙂

I am also considering the BB chip for this week because I'm not sure I'll ever be happy with the fixtures of all five defenders and both goalkeepers ever again. If you haven't read Ruth's comment about the use of this chip, I suggest you do. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/08/05/sleeper-cesc-fabregas/?hc_page=7#hc_comment_13675873

The whole point of playing the bench boost outside of a DGW is so that it doesn't impact your wildcard. Doing it after after the first wc means that I'll be compromising that wildcard in order to have a decent bench and I won't be putting together the overall best team for the upcoming fixtures.

Will Aguero still be on penalties after missing 2 last night? His ability to score from open play should have no ability on his penality skills, so the hattrick should have no context on the situation.

I'd look to move him if he's your fourth midfielder. If he's your fifth you might be able to give it another game or two.

Well it's just for the next two gameweeks with a WC for GW4 when I'll most likely get him back.
Not 100% on the City defence away to Stoke and definitely not against the Hammers.
Everton fixtures for the next two look very good and they could finally have renewed their fortress status.

Less of a determined and more realistically pessimistic. International week always hurts me, last season I ended up making my FT early to have 3 players go down injured and took a -8.

It also perfectly coincides with the end of the transfer window so I figured at the beginning of the season the safest plan was to have the WC ready for international injuries, player transfers, and known team sheets. That way I can hopefully do well relatively early and jump on any band wagons that pop up.

I understand where you are coming from but Sunderland had like 30% possession and still scored. Man C defenders getting used to new system and Stones at fault for the goal.

I own Stones and not selling but happy to bench and understand why others may look to shift.

Do think the OP should prob hold Stones anyway, defender transfer ( who is playing)seems a little sideways this early on

            • 9 Years

Definitely sideways and I'm really 50/50 on it. Was going to hold incase I needed 2 transfers next week to avoid a hit but I'm pretty happy with the rest of the team so far and willing to give everyone another week or two to prove their worth. It's really the WC factoring in, I've got two transfers before it so I might as well use them, since there's no hint of fires in the team for next week.

Eden Hazard: ‘It’s not every year I score in my first game. I missed a couple of penalties last year, Oscar asked if he could shoot but I said it was my turn and it’s always good to score a penalty.

Looks like Hazard may not take all the penalties for Chelsea. Oscar may take some here and there

Not sure why people think he will be taking all of them now. That clearly suggests a rotation - Oscar will take the next one.

Something that is in Hazard's favour is that Oscar will not always be on the pitch. Haz usually plays 90 but Oscar will generally be subbed off if he starts or start on the bench.

Every year the 3-5-2 is thrown out as a valid formation, only to be ripped up. But I think this might be the year for it.

I am finding the 6.5 forwards to be a little uninspiring, and with so many midfielders now capable goal scorers, I could seriously see myself wildcarding to something like this in a few weeks:

    Foster - Jaku

    Valencia - Williams - Evans - Friend - Amat

    Hazard - Martial - Mane/Firmino - Arnie - Redmond

    Aguero - Lukaku/Costa - Diamande

Anyone else leaning that way this year?

I'm considering it as we have some OOP options in MF this season.

Firmino, Redmond, Martial play like striker who classed as midfielder.

      Diamande seems an interesting enabler.

Totally agree. But do like some 6.5 forwards and kinda wish I had 2 to back up Aguero. I think I have a stronger midfield than your WC option but I only have 6.5 rather than Costa / Lukaku so that is to be expected.

According to your numbers did midfielders score more goals than forwards last year? and if yes what's the % of goals scored by MF to number of midfielders in game. I'm pretty sure you're gonna find that finding goal scoring MF's are harder (lower %) than finding goal-scoring FWD's

Surely the transfer window can't close on Hull with that front line? If it does, I'm certainly not adverse to looking at 3 5 2 after the international break. Largely agree that there is better value in the middle of the park. I think it's more if one of the mid to high range strikers becomes explosive.

Aguero, Zlatan and say Lukaku could easily become the front line of choice.
