Scout Report – Simone Zaza

Following injuries to Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic strengthened his attacking options with the acquisition of Juventus striker Simone Zaza late last week. The Italian international joins on a season-long loan for an initial €5 million, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 25-year-old is keen to improve over the next nine months after struggling to nail down a regular role with the Serie A side:

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me including the fans and everyone at the club. I wanted to start a new experience and I feel this is the right choice for me… I want to become a better player and I know I can do that at West Ham. Unfortunately we could not qualify for the Europa League, but I am hoping I can help the club do that next season.”

The History

Born in Policoro, Italy, Zaza began his youth career at Stella Azzurra Bernalda and Valdera before being scouted by Serie A side Atalanta, whom he signed with at the age of 15.

He made his professional debut for Atalanta against Reggina in April 2009, but would only be granted two further league appearances for the club before joining Sampdoria in July 2010.

Zaza failed to establish himself at Sampdoria, though, and was sent out on loan three times over the following four seasons. He played four matches for Serie B outfit Juve Stabia in 2011/12, scoring one goal, before joining Viareggio, a third tier side, on loan during the second half of the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted 11 times in 18 matches.

The following season saw Zaza take in another loan spell, this time with Serie B side Ascoli, where he again impressed, scoring 18 goals and adding four assists from 36 appearances.

Having played just twice for Sampdoria over three years, Zaza moved to Sassuolo in the summer of 2013. He scored nine goals and registered two assists in 33 Serie A matches, and improved on that record the following campaign, totalling 11 goals and three assists in 31 matches.

Last summer, Zaza joined Juventus but struggled for pitch time with the Italian champions. Handed only five starts (and 14 sub appearances) he registered a respectable five goals and an assist in just 663 minutes.

Capped by Italy at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 levels, totalling six appearances, Zaza made his senior debut against Holland in September 2014. He featured three times for the Azzurri during Euro 2016 and has so far played 14 times for his country, scoring once and providing three assists.

The Prospects

Given the afore-mentioned injuries to Carroll and Ayew, it’s expected that Zaza will be West Ham’s first choice striker for the time being – ahead of Jonathan Calleri, Enner Valencia and Ashley Fletcher in the pecking order.

The Italian could be a little short of match fitness having failed to feature for Juve during their first two league matches, but he did register some minutes in pre-season, including an appearance against the Hammers, where he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 win for the Serie A champions.

It’s expected that the new boy will come in at 7.0 or 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and with the Hammers likely to be boosted by the return of the hugely influential Dimitri Payet after the international break, Zaza should be on the end of a decent supply line, which also includes the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Michail Antonio and Sofiane Feghouli, another who should return to full fitness over the next couple of weeks.

Zaza impressively averaged a goal attempt every 22.1 minutes last season, which was better than both Carroll (27.6) and Ayew (45.4), although the later did play on the right wing in the majority of his appearances whilst playing for Swansea.

The Italian is not really a target man, though, winning just 17 of his 35 aerial duels last season, relying instead on his clever movement and calmness in front of goal. Zaza isn’t blessed with exceptional pace, though, so it appears he will be heavily reliant on chances being created for him.

Bearing in mind that most Fantasy managers are currently holding Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, Zaza may well turn out to be a viable option in that crucial mid-price bracket if he can take advantage of some promising fixtures to follow. Obviously a potential ban for Aguero would force a reassessment.

West Ham are braced for four favourable home clashes (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN) in the next six Gameweeks, promoting the appeal of an attack that found the net 65 times last term.

Although a fit-again Payet looks the Hammers’ likeliest source of returns, Zaza – if he can up his match sharpness over the international break – has the potential to hit the ground running.

If you’re eyeing up the West Ham options, Antonio – at 7.0 – is also one to monitor after taking his tally to two goals in as many matches with a weekend header away to City. The downside, however, is that the versatile former Forest man is just as likely to be fielded in defence, judging by Bilic’s team sheets, though a move to the attacking midfield three could yet see him emerge as one of the best mid-price options in the centre of the park.

Is Aguero really essential over the season? Currently got him but weighing up if the money is better off used elsewhere, regardless of a possible ban..

Could potentially WC and swap my team around
    1) Walker to Shaw
    2) Redmond to Sterling
    3) Capoue to Ozil
    4) Aguero to Defoe
    5) Gray to Stuani

I've got Ibrahimovic, Sanchez and Hazard as big hitters already, surely 3 upgrades and 1 downgrade (sideways but cheaper) is an improvement?

Another option was to keep Gray, swap Ozil for Cazorla and have 0.7 itb instead of 0.2

The ban doesn't come into it too much, it's more that there is value around.

Who's likely to score more points over the season,

      Aguero
      Capoue (was a sub anyway)
      Walker
      Redmond

      Or

      Sterling
      Ozil
      Shaw
      Defoe

I would argue second option is stronger

The more I think about Aguero and Gray getting bans, the more I hope it happens. Big opportunity to play WC, get in Arsenal cover for the good run, gain some value, get one over on some of the casual office players that have got lucky with their starting team and keep funds itb for Aguero's return.

I would avoid Santi, he's gone back to his deeper role more that ozil is back and arsenal don't get many penalties in a season. Try and get ozil or sanchez.

I'm thinking Sanchez will be put out wide and Giroud up top with Walcott being dropped. Santi on some FK and corners to land them on donkeys head. Even from deep at 7.5 I believe he is excellent value.

        1. Bushido

Sanchez normally plays out wide. He had a bad season last year, even then he still managed to score 16 goals.

I'm not doubting Sanchez ability to score big hauls. I'm thinking of how or if I can balance it with Santi +3.5m. Sanchez is not the most consistent point scorer just pops up with large ones.

Toby, Caz/Lamela and Lukaku out for -4 or -8 depending on if I have 1 or 2ft. It is either take hits now and keep WC or use WC and take hits later.

With Kun out for 2GW's, I'm suspecting that at that point we may find out that the best way to get him back might turn out to be to do Ibra -> Kun in GW6. Leicester at home in GW6 could be low scoring for Ibra , hide behind the couch for Stoke at home in GW7 and captain Sanchez, but after then ManU fixtures get pretty tricky. Sound thinking?

    1. BRONALDINHO

He'll get goals, but will he outscore other cheaper strikers finding their form, that's the question. So it's about gambling on some of the mid-priced options stepping up, e.g Lukaku, Benteke, Giroud. Then a powerful midfield may get you more points than Kun+Ibra

If I do WC, I'll have Aguero in my final draft, replace him with whichever striker I want and leave those funds in the bank for his return.

Only way to go about it really, spreading those funds around the team will only cause too much hassle in two weeks time.

    Hey guys,
Big saints fan. In regards to Boufal- brilliant player. I would definitely monitor him once he is put on this site. In regards to Redmonds playing time.. That could be a real problem. Imo, Boufal will start up top alongside Shane long. With Europa league, you could see a rotation. Boufal and Redmond could be an option. Throw charlie Austin in the mix too. Really puts a question mark around Redmond. Only secure player that has fpl value is Tadic... Dusan has not provided at all this season so it is tough to have him. Just keep that in mind. Southampton is one to monitor.

    CITY UPDATE

First of all, Sergio Aguero is out of the Manchester derby. I'm hearing his injury will keep him out for about 3 weeks. Also, Andre Marriner has confirmed in his match report that he didn't see the elbow incident on Sunday, even though he was yards away looking straight at it! This now means the FA can take retrospective action, which means they'll probably ban him for 3 games.
Joe Hart will sign for Torino tonight after his medical is complete but he won't be unveiled properly until AFTER the international break. Joe is due to land in Turin at 2pm.
Elia Mangala returning to Porto is really gathering pace and I'm hearing that should be done by the end of the day.
Jason Denayer has been told Pep wants him to stay in the City squad this year 'to learn' Pep's style and ways, BUT, he has also been told that if he fancies playing every week then he can find a new club to go on loan to. City rate Denayer highly and won't let him leave permanently now or at the end of a loan!

If I kept Kun, I could go for this:

    Foster - Jaku
    Valencia - Stones (or another 5.0 - Williams?) - JEvans - Friend (or another 4.5) - Amat
    Hazard - Sanchez - Redmond - Snodgrass - Capoue
    Kun - Ibra - Gray

Obviously the budget trio of Redmond - Snodgrass - Capoue is quite a punt but fits in the big four.

    Benteke Ibrahimovic (Diomande)

    Thoughts?

Got a plan to get Aguero back? I'd go Sterling over Nolitio to save the extra £1m and Shaw over Bailly

not as of now, but probably something like Ibra -> Aguero and Antonio -> 5.5 or Sanchez -> Ozil. Think Nolito could be a good differential over the popular Sterling, but could get Shaw over Bailly since I have 0.1 itb.

Interesting to note the current leader hasn't had Aguero this year. Goes against my belief that he is essential

Sanchez if he's in form. If not then take him out for ozil. It's more difficult to fit sanchez into your team so you might as well get him first.

I have decided to promote Capoue to 4th mid in my team. With this in mind which is preferable long term

    A.
352 with Firmino and Diamonde 1st sub
    B.
343 with Benteke and a 4.5 mid (Fletcher?) 1st sub

    Random thought for discussion:

Isn't it funny how many said Ibra only did so well in France because the league was poor and he played in a superior team to United in PSG, yet so far this season PSG have been struggling without the big man. 😉

Does this change those opinions at all?

Ibrahimovic is a top, top player. Has been throughout his career.

        I agree.

I was mainly referring to those that stated he would struggle at United and in the premier league because United aren't as good as PSG and France was a much weaker league.

Just wanted to know if those opinions would alter now that PSG have had a poor start without him. 🙂

What is this poor start you're speaking of? They won their first two games and lost a difficult away fixture at a quality side in Monaco.

Yes, I would say 90% of the people who doubted Zlatan and didn't start with him now have him in heir teams.

They haven't played well at all so not necessarily speaking just about the results.

They have clearly struggled without Ibra's presence and finishing up front.

Ibra does well everywhere he goes - his age (for me) seemed to be perceived as too much of a negative on here, though saying that it is very early days - we are still in August!

Aguero takes a few to get back after an injury. If you're selling you don't need to plan a date to get him back - do what makes sense when the time is right.

Luka Costa and Vardy all tempting, but Luka is the value play for me.

Already have Lukaku. And Benteke. Was hoping to skin the FPL cat a different way to most but the Aguero situation will probably force me to wildcard (already on a -4) and I may fall back in line with most teams round here. Feels like a bit of a shame but I imagine it's for the best!

Seeing as theree is a mnew beak after GW8, I'm thinking it may pay off to go with only one of them in GW6-GW8, and then WC after GW8 if necessary to get both

      1. Piggs Boson

        Probably Ozil, for two reasons:

        1. Sanchez was playing up front when his 'explosion' happened, that won't be the case with Perez and Giroud now in the picture.

        2. Ozil is far better value, and I expect him to get ~200pts again this season. He was unlucky to not get an assist in that game.

Not sure I agree. Whenever he and Walcott are in tandem he seems to do well. He wasn't as impressive LW last season.

          Oh and

          3. We have so many big hitters to afford, that Sanchez may limit our choice further down the line. Aguero Zlatan Hazard Ozil is more affordable!
