Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 5

After listing the players in our Scout Picks Squad earlier in the week, the time has come to reveal our Gameweek 5 selections.

The search for spare change, given our 83m budget, has driven our selection of Crystal Palace’s 4.4 goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. He entertains a Stoke side that has only managed to score twice this season, the joint-lowest tally along with West Brom.

Heading our defender selections is Leighton Baines (5.5), who has the triple potential of clean sheet, attacking points and FPL bonus points. The 10.6% owned Everton left-back, who is on penalties, faces a shot shy Middlesbrough side that is in the bottom three in terms of goal attempts in the last two Gameweeks. In addition, on Monday he showed his strong bonus point potential, picking up two thanks to an all round style of play covering tackling, chance creation and passing.

John Stones (5.0) must surely be on a final warning from his patient 30.9% of FPL owners, after failing to pick up a single clean sheet this term. We are giving him one last shot, too, hoping that he can belatedly deliver at home to Bournemouth.

Two raiding full-backs take the final two defender spots. Southampton’s Cedric Soares has dipped under the radar this season with a lowly 1% FPL ownership but looks on the cusp of a big points haul. He is currently joint top in terms of shots on target among defenders and only Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia has made more crosses than the 5.0 right back among defenders.

Christian Fuchs (5.4) has so far failed to deliver the attacking form of last season, which saw him finish on 150 points in FPL with four assists and an impressive 25 bonus points. But with Leicester buoyant after their debut Champions League victory midweek and hosting a Burnley side which has posted the league’s lowest amount of goal attempts, we believe an upturn in the 8.4% owned defender’s fortunes beckons.

We’ve opted for a premium priced midfield this Gameweek, which has forced us to turn to a more budget friendly 4-3-3 formation and reduce our options in the centre of the park.

Alexis Sanchez (11.0) is our top Arsenal pick for the London side’s trip to Hull. With a goal (and two assists) in his last away league match against Watford in Gameweek 3, and another strike on the road midweek in the Champions League, the 13.5% owned Chilean certainly has form on his side. Hull offer him a stellar fixture as well, as the Yorkshire side currently languishes in the bottom three in terms of home goal attempts conceded both in and outside of the box.

Kevin De Bruyne was to be our Manchester City selection, but his 10.5 price tag proved prohibitive. Instead, we’ve opted for his cut-price team-mate Raheem Sterling (8.3), who should also do well in City’s home clash with Bournemouth. The 15.1% owned England winger brought in a 16-point FPL haul in his last home appearance for City. Be warned, though – with Sterling racking up 79 minutes of Champions League action midweek he may face reduced minutes this weekend thanks to City’s wealth of attacking midfield options, including Nolito (9.0) and Leroy Sane (7.8).

Eden Hazard (10.3) completes our heavyweight midfield trio. Last Gameweek’s away trip to Swansea was the only league match this season where the Belgian failed to bring in attacking returns. But at home it’s a different story, with double-digit FPL points hauls in both of his Stamford Bridge league outings this season. Liverpool may have the second best record in terms of goal attempts conceded in the box this season but with no clean sheets and seven goals against, the 34.3% owned Belgian looks a strong bet to once again profit on familiar turf.

Romelu Lukaku (9.2) has deservedly picked up 167,000 new FPL managers this week on the back of his impressive 11-minute hat-trick against Sunderland on Monday. At home to Middlesbrough, the Everton striker faces another kind fixture to continue his dramatic upturn in form.

After being rested for the majority of Manchester United’s Europa League tie against Feyenoord, Zlatan Ibramimovic (11.9) is a certain starter for the Red Devils trip to Vicarage Road. With a 63.3% FPL ownership, he is the game’s most popular player and faces a Watford side that has failed to keep a clean sheet this season. Considering no player has managed more goal attempts than the big Swede it is no surprise to him at the top of our captain poll.

With Sergio Aguero sitting out the second of his three-match suspension, Manchester City are set to rely on Kelechi Iheanacho (7.0) to lead the line. The young striker looks an excellent deputy for the Argentine having scored in both last weekend’s Manchester Derby and midweek in the Champions League. With an ownership of just 4.7% he could also provide an ideal one match differential this weekend for those looking to wildcard to bring Aguero back in Gameweek 6.

Antonio Valencia (5.6) drops to the bench but still offers strong prospect of returns for Manchester United’s visit to Watford. The right back was rested in the Europa League and put in an impressive performance in the Red Devil’s last league away fixture, picking up maximum bonus against Hull in Gameweek 3.

Another that is unlucky to find himself on the bench is the 7.9% owned Christian Eriksen (8.4), who looks to be returning to the creative form that saw him earn 16 assists for Tottenham in 2015/16. Last weekend he picked up two assists in the league, away to Stoke, and he currently tops Spurs’ chances created, corners and crossing tables.

Christian Benteke (7.5)’s salmon like leap to score against Middlesbrough last weekend looks set to be the first of many headed goals from the Crystal Palace striker. His team-mates are certainly geared up to deliver him service as no side has put in more crosses than the south London outfit. Stoke will have to reach new defensive heights to keep the 5.6% owned Belgian at bay on Sunday.

The Community Champion

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. The current champion to beat is Grand Thibauto, who had a single point lead over us in Gameweek 4.

This week’s champion Tokyo Rising Sun has opted for a 3-4-3 formation of: Schmeichel; Walker, Baines, Bellerin; Nolito, Bolasie, Eriksen, Firmino; Ibrahimovic, Lukaku, Bony.

What's the feeling on Benteke captaincy here? He faces a Stoke side at home which have conceded 10 goals in 4 games this season (City & Spurs put 4 past them)

I have Ibra, Costa, Sterling, Hazard and Baines too who are also well worth captaincy shouts.

What are other Capoue owners doing?

Playing as 4th mid and getting another 4.5 as 5th mid

From next week, probably making him 4th mid - based on fixtures and performance. Also bringing back Kun is going to mean a shuffling of funds.

I think if you have consistent players around him i.e.. Kun/Lukaku/Ozil/Payet etc, you can afford to have him in.

      Next 4 watford fixtures - Burnely/Bournemouth/Middlesbrough/Swansea.

I'm aware of the fixtures but seems hard to drop one of Hazard Ozil Antonio Firmino for a 4.5 mid so I can play Capoue instead though...

Agreed, but look at Ali and Mahrez last season. Also hence why, if you have consistent players around him your not going to fall behind too much if he doesn't perform.

    Lamela Ozil Firmino Mirallas (Capoue)
    Ibra Costa Gray

Wanting to put Kun back in next week but also wanting Lukaku is giving me a small headache. Do I:

    A) Save my free
    B) Play 3-5-2 with Capoue
    C) Gray to Lukaku (makes life impossible)

Strong hints coming from the Spurs fans that he'll be rested. Dembele or no Dembele he's looked knackered the last couple of games, especially midweek.

Eriksen looks good though. That's why he's selected.

Definitely captain. Just think, if he can capitalise on one mistake by a goalie in the Manchester derby, what kind of chaos is he going to cause against Watford's defence and, in particular, Heurelho Gomes?!?!

Yea i was set on Lukaku, but his 10% ownership compared to Ibra's 60%, made me think again. As captaining Luka over Ibra could be classed as a risk! What do ye guys think ?

Yea, its kind of different for me as l'm 18k atm. So it's not worth the risk. I want to stay there, so its better to go with the higher ownership.

Not really if you get a differental right, you could have a big rise in rank.

Cheers bud, so you reckon because I am 600 odd, it's better for me to take the risk than you at 18k? I'm a football fanatic but this is my first season taking FPL serious (never had the time before) so excuse my ignorance?

Apologies man, i misread as 600k. So that post should have been the other way around then. Lol sorry.

Yea so you think Lukaku will outscore ibra by a good bit then ?

No i don't think your ignorant, just bold. I'm just a small bit conservative when i get a descent start, thats all.

Haha, cool man, nah you just caught me off guard (shudda realised that you misread my 600 for 600k)! But as I said, I love my footy, played fpl over the past few seasons as a casual, so giving it more attention this season! Lovin this site apart from the whole rate my time / pick my team thing, that's all part of it I guess!
Anyway, I'm a utd fan and love Ibra but just think Lukaku might continue on in the same vane!
Is it a bad choice in your opinion, considering my current rank?

No problem man, forget about it.

Yea sure we where all casual once before. Yea it can be addictive. But good pastime.

Yea it's a good site and everyone is very friendly and helpfull. Yea rmt can be annoying and frustrating at times as everyone has different views on how to distribute the funds, as seen in the scout cast.

I'm also an utd fan. Yea i don't think it is a bad choice, just it's the difference in ownership that gets me. Just if you get it wrong there are more risks involved, thats all. From your position i wouldn't recomend it as it's better to try in hold your current rank and take risks later on in the season when there's more at steak. But it's completely up to you ! Sure even Mark gets it wrong and he is the expert. I'm sure he has Lukaku as his captain this week, but as he said to do if you need to catch up!

I think Ibra will score. Let's say he only scores one, Lukaku has to be statistically likely to outscore Ibra to make me want to captain him, given Ibra's huge ownership. Apart from the fact it's very unlikely Lukaku will score two, I'm not sure he will score at all, especially against a side like Boro who have a tight defence and don't concede many.

I can't decide between them as options for the (C) at the moment but I'm tempted by Lukaku because of his aerial prowess and Middlesbrough's weakness defending balls into the box.

Why would you want to make either of those transfers? If it's to fund a move for Aguero then save and make your decision after the weekend's games

      Just look at the poll.

The captain sensible article just tells you what is happening on the poll anyway.

Probs later. Just monday to a friday kick off makes it hard for them to fit everything in, in such a short window !

    A: start Gray

    Snodgrass vs bolasie dilema

    Im new in fantasy football

Im on wildcard im on my final problem

Is snodgrass the main man in their team?

Bolasie's fixture is very good...but i have capoue who has also have goodfixtures..so it is useless for me to have 5 playble mids if i cant play them all...

Instead My logic is i will be able to save transfer when snodgrass fixtures becomes better... But if snodgrass ismt the man in his team i wont risk not having bolasie...
I mean if i hold snodgrass now and use capoue i will be saving rhe precious transfer
    Help

Hull have difficult fixtures until GW12. Then they greatly turn for the better. Snoddy on all set pieces except pens and seems to be involved in everything Hull does. Bolasie seems reborn under Koeman and is getting in alot of crosses. If Luaku has truly found his form, those will become assists.

I'd go Bolasie for now then shift to Snodgrass in a few weeks.

Yeah, this is good advice.....use a transfer later if needed.

I'd go got Bolasie. He's in a good team playing attacking football and has lovely fixtures coming up. You won't play Capoue every week (unless this mystifying run of form keeps going) so worth getting Bolasie to play every week.

IF Charlie Austin starts and bags a brace Sunday.....would you consider him as the 3rd forward in your WC? FIxtures are a mixed bag until Decemeber, but 6.2 is good value.

6.2 for a starting soton striker is always good value

Would you AOA this team to play Capoue?

    Foster
    McAuley, Baines, Collins
    Cazorla, Hazard, Sterling, Antonio
    Lukaku, Costa, Ibra

    Pickford, Capoue, Amat, Friend

AOA chip is garbage, but I see no need to use it this week.

I could have used AOA chip last week and bagged Capoue's 13 point haul. Just some perspective 🙂

Nope. AOA is a punt, but punting on Capoue vs Man Utd probably aint the one. Pick a week when he has a better home fixture for it.

What wildcard team for this gameweek do you guys think is better??:

    Option A:

    Hazard, Firmino, Cazorla, Antonio, (Capoue)
    Ibra, Lukaku Benteke

    0.1 ITB

    Option B:
    Foster (Jakupovic)
    Baines, Stones, Holebas (Kingsley, Amat)
    Hazard, Firmino, Cazorla, Antonio, (Fletcher)
    Ibra, Lukaku Benteke

5.6 ITB to go Benteke to Aguero GW6

    Foster (Jakupovic)
    Baines, Stones, Shaw (Holebas, Amat)
    Hazard, Firmino, Cazorla, Antonio, Cazorla
