Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Another Heung-Min Son goal for Spurs and an Islam Slimani strike for Leicester help both sides to Champions League victory on a night when English football is pre-occupied with other news.

CSKA Moscow 0 Tottenham 1

Heung-Min Son (7.5) scored his fifth goal in as many matches to help an under-strength Spurs make relatively light work of a tough trip to Moscow.

Son was set up by Erik Lamela (6.9) as the pair continued their fine starts to the season – with 37 and 22 FPL points respectively, they are the club’s highest-scoring midfielders. Lamela, however, has failed to start any of the last three league matches.

Spurs were unlucky not to win by more – Dele Alli (8.3) hit the bar and they outshot their hosts by 22 attempts to nine – but Vincent Janssen (7.8) again failed to turn industry into goals.

Mauricio Pochettino made two changes to his line-up.

Injuries meant Lamela replaced Moussa Sissoko (6.9) and Ben Davies (4.9) again started for Danny Rose (5.9), while Kieran Trippier (4.8) started at right-back as the 33.6%-owned Kyle Walker (5.9) was handed a rest ahead of Sunday’s top of the table clash with Man City.

Life without Harry Kane – and a further four first-teamers currently injured – seems to be bringing out the best in Tottenham’s midfielders.

Intriguingly, the Spurs boss changed tactics, opting for a 4-1-4-1 to accomodate Lamela, Alli, Christian Eriksen (8.3m) and Son in the midfield spots behind Janssen.

Pochettino introduced Georges-Kevin Nkoudou (6.9) for Janssen in the second-half and his direct running and pace troubled a tiring Moscow defence.

The move also freed Son to play through the middle and his goal came not long afterwards, to the delight of his Will Grigg-channeling boss.

“I feel very pleased for Sonny. He is on fire and to keep this form is very important for us.””

Son, however, went for the lukewarm water approach.

“It is a lucky time – I’ve scored a lot of goals. I try to score every time and help my teammates. I thought I should have scored a second goal – it was a a great chance but everyone is happy.”

Son has been acquired by over 82,000 new FPL owners at the time of writing but is still set to go into Sunday’s clash with City found in less than 4% of squads.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Lamela, Eriksen, Alli (Winks 82), Son, Janssen (Nkoudou 67).
Subs not used: Vorm, Walker, Onomah, Wimmer, Carter-Vickers.

Leicester City 1 Porto 0

Leicester continued to save last season’s form for the Champions League, battling to a tight win over seasoned European campaigners Porto.

Islam Slimani (8.5) made a habit of scoring against Porto for former club Sporting Lisbon, and he kept it going at The King Power, heading home from a Riyad Mahrez (9.3) cross.

Slimani now has three goals from as many starts for Leicester. His partnership with Jamie Vardy (9.8) is still developing, but not so far to the benefit of the Englishman, who has drawn three blanks.

Claudio Ranieri made two changes from the 4-1 mauling in Manchester. Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) returned from a groin injury and Luis Hernandez (4.4) replaced Danny Simpson (5.0) at right-back. The Spaniard added defensive solidity to a back four that continues to be tight at home but porous away. He also has that handy long-throw.

But it was the centre-half partnership of Robert Huth and Wes Morgan (both 5.0) who caught the eye, repelling Porto’s late rally.

Ranieri was happy to take some of the credit for the win post-match.

“I spoke with Riyad and Islam and said ‘come on guys, make something good tonight’. They made the pass and scored the goal, after that we defended very well. We played with our spirit tonight.”

A home encounter with an in-form Southampton on Sunday will be a solid test of whether ‘our spirit’ can return on a more consistent basis.

It is worth noting that Leicester have chalked up a clean sheet in three of five home matches across all competitions this season and host the Saints, West Brom, Palace and Middlesbrough in their next four at the King Power.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernandez, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Gray 88), Drinkwater, Amartey, Albrighton, Slimani (King 82), Vardy (Musa).
Subs not used: Zieler, Schlupp, Simpson, Okazaki.

So which WC midfield should I go with?

    A. Sanchez - Sterling - Lallana - Snodgrass

    B. Sanchez - Walcott - Lallana - Son

As long as he maintains this form, sure, he is nailed. A fit again Ramsey and a dip in form will change that.

Agreed. It's a loosely used term. "Nailed on to start the next game" would be more acceptable 😀

Actually when i watch Arsenal attacking this year, I see Theo is very ambitious and always create his position and wants the ball. When not, sometimes he is pissed off.

Didnt see him like this as he used to be so wimp on the pitch before. Totally nailed.

    Heaton, Pickford

    Lovren, Walker, Bellerin, Amat, Holebas,

    Kun, Ibra, Deeney

There are better options than Lovren and Holebas. Liverpool will hardly get a clean sheet against anyone any time soon and so will Watford. Holebas is also just one YC from suspension. Swansea's defence is shaky also. Too light in MF. Don't like this team at all

    Considering AOA with:

    Foster
    Valencia / McAuley
    Sanchez / Firmino / Antonio / Chadli / Capoue
    Agüero / Lukaku / Benteke

Subs: Pickford / Williams / Stones / Amat

    Opinions wanted.

You could go with Capoue over Walker, if you think he could be involved. I just think he'll be a consistent 2 pointer from this point on. Don't fancy both Watford and Spurs to keep CS. Would start Walker for his attacking potential.

Genuinely thinking of the same (Similar)

I have Firminho and Lallana and was thinking of KDB Capoue to Theo and Couts.

When Pool score a few, a combination of 3 midfielders has hit 30 points plus each time. Of course it's a risk/reward as if^, in my case, Mane & Hendo net in a two nil win then the limit is maybe 15-12 if you nab both assists.

I just think Pool are free-scoring and will continue to do so regardless of fixtures - I think having 2 is a great idea, 3 could of course be stupid!

    Cech--Pickford
    Sagna-Lovren-Smith-Amat-Evans
    Sanchez-Capoue-Sterling-Snodgrass-Antonio

I want to bring in Lallana. Should I drop Antonio for him and Capoue for puncheon? Would change Capoue to Lallana, but need to fin 0.6 from somewhere.
Any help? Suggestion to drop sagna is good, but city is still solid and assist thread is there, also he is a bit differential, I just cant trust stones to make any impact..
Also Antonio games seems to be good and potential goals are there.

Would Costa to Kaku give you the 0.6? Fixtures slightly better over next 6 weeks, Lukaku is more likely of a haul and Costa is one yellow off a suspension.

It does make sense to save as everyone is suggesting. None of your forwards have a bad fixture and all have a certain amount of form behind them so you don't need to do anything really.

Taking hits for defenders is always bad right?

What if you have 2x injured defs and want to free up cash too? And you have Amat as 5th def.

    Shaw, Baines, Valencia, Stones, Amat

Looking to ship Shaw and Baines for a -8. to 2x 4.5s.

Wauw Son scored again in CL yesterday, he is in the form of his life it seems 😀 Still getting Walcott in, and not Son though....

      Wise choice, imo...

I'm 0,1 off Antonio > Walcott so I'll have to save my transfer this week. Good luck Jaks!

Cheers! How was last week for you? Would keep Antonio though, he'll score in the next one!

What are your thoughts on Walcott?
I'm thinking of drafting him in too.

Well I'm not quite sure is he is nailed in long term but with those fixtures I might take a gamble. The other choice would be Son (who could also be rotated very easily) or Coutinho (who might also sit on the bench after the internationals)

I'd like to replace Barkley with one of the two for a hit. But not entirely convinced. Think I'll wait a week and get Snodgrass. More assuring in terms of starts. On set pieces and penalties. Equally pivotal, if not more, compared to Theo and Son. And cheaper.

Yea not feeling the love for Snodgrass myself, did he get a goal from open play yet?

If Ibra blanks next week are you looking at selling for the two 'tough' fixtures (liv, che) ?

    Lukaku (mci, bur)
    Benteke (WHU, lei)
    Costa* (LEI, MUN)
    Janssen (wba, bou)
    Giroud** (SWA MID)
    Sturridge** (MUN, WBA)

The more I look at this I cant see me selling Ibra even if he does nothing against Stoke.

Defoe and Ighalo good options, then boost midfield.

Austin or Rondon to fund Sanchez. Doing it even if Ibra gets a haul

I think if he fails in the easy fixture he probably has to go.

Exactly. Better off keeping because his statistics are great, regardless of him not scoring in 2 games.

Deeney, Defoe, returned from injury Carrol
Carrol is a bit lol, but they desperately need him

    Midfield:

    Sanchez, KDB, Firmino, Antonio, Capoue

    KDB to who?

    A) Ozil
    B) Sterling
    C) Mane
    D) Coutinho
    E) Lallana
    F) Son
    G) Save FT and play Capoue

G - 2 FT will be neat during thw break

      Saving & playing Capoue would be the wisest choice. But an Ozil Sanchez double up is very tempting indeed ;_;

This is probably the week I will remove Hazard... So many options, it makes me dizzy... And there's always an option to leave him and have 2 FT for international brake... Hull is not the worst fixture to field a player of his class. What you suggest?

He certainly wouldn't be a priority to remove before that fixture for me. But if you had a plan to maybe get a Liverpool mid or an Arsenal one they also have good fixtures and a bit of form behind them.

Wise words... I except thrashing at Liberty with Klopp high pressing against Swans, who love to start moving ball deep in their own half... I'm leaning towards pool mid...

I'm not sure the press conf will give us much. The feeling amongst United fans is that Blind has won the place at the moment, regardless of Shaw's fitness
