Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 7

We take our final look back at Gameweek 7, recognising the hap-hazard achievements of Arsenal’s goalscoring defender, acknowledging the tempting resilience of the Spurs backline while pondering if it’s time to re-align our squad spending.

The Player

Some would say that Laurent Koscielny was fortunate to have been credited with Arsenal’s winner on Sunday.

A clumsy cack-handed finish saw the Frenchman bundle Theo Walcott’s flick into the Burnley net, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to wade in by kicking Koscielny’s calf.
A farcical but vital goal.

Arsenal claimed the points with Koscielny awarded the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points. It was enough to ensure that the Gunners’ man is the first defender to figure as a Gameweek leading scorer with 15-points.

As a result, he’s also one of the first defenders to sustain a transfer bandwagon of any real significance.

Ranking sixth in the “transfers in” column heading into Gameweek 8, Koscielny has risen to 6.2 in value as FPL managers begin to switch their sights to consider big-ticket defenders.

Arsene Wenger’s rearguard has demonstrated extra steel, with the introduction of Shkodran Mustafi cited as a key factor.

While the German has gained plaudits, it’s Koscielny that’s attracting the FPL attention courtesy of his two goals – already putting him halfway to his best Premier League goalscoring tally achieved last season.

The top scoring FPL defender, Koscielny’s 11% ownership is closing the gap on team-mate Hector Bellerin – the Spaniard still retained by 25.6% of FPL managers.

The fixture list suggests there is more to come from both.

With Swansea City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland looming, Koscielny and the Arsenal defence will be expected to boast further returns before bracing for stiffening fixtures with Manchester United and Spurs.

The Team

Across North London, Spurs have made a statement.

Their victory over a previously perfect Manchester City has suddenly thrown things open. It’s paved the way for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to promote their title challenging credentials while leaving the door ajar for Arsenal and Liverpool to close the gap.

Spurs proved City’s vulnerabilities – exposing their questionable defending and the fact that Kevin De Bruyne is an almost irreparable component of their midfield.

But this is not about City – Spurs clearly have plenty to offer us.

Heung-min Son’s form has already been highlighted on these pages – his newfound spark has attracted thousands of new investors, hungry to pounce on the latest mid-price talent.

We’ve also acknowledged the performances of Dele Alli – seemingly re-energised by Son’s recent displays. He’ll continue to play second fiddle to the South Korean for now, but could be a factor on Harry Kane’s return, with Pochettino perhaps shuffling his attacking setup.

But it’s the Spurs defence providing the new temptation.

Just as Koscielny’s haul ensured his popped his head above the parapet, the Spurs defence clocked up his fourth clean sheet in seven on Sunday to earn further investment.

Kyle Walker continues to be the headline act. Now found in 35% of FPL squads, his price rise and ownership is beginning to bring new options into the equation.

Danny Rose tops the Spurs ranks with 6.5 points per game following Sunday’s assist and yet has been claimed by just 5.3% of FPL managers.

Jan Vertonghen is earning attention by virtue of his 5.6 price tag, with the 6.5 Toby Alderweireld gradually shedding owners, presumably to Walker amongst others, in every Gameweek thus far.

But the Belgian is arguably the class act on show – he has an eye for goal that can justify his price tag and should he drop to 6.4, he could yet provide good value.

However, with four away trips in the next six, this is arguably not the time to seize on the potential offered by Pochettino’s rearguard.

Like Arsenal’s defence, the most opportune window may arrive at Christmas, when, despite the busy schedule, both north London clubs are treated to softening fixtures.

The Talking Point

So will December offer the perfect window to re-align our squad spending, or should we take the lead offered by Koscienly and the Spurs defence now?

Certainly, the Frenchman’s 15-point tally reminded us of the value that can be gleaned from big-hitting defenders. If you can absorb some frustrating two-point returns, the big scores can follow and, in the mid-term, justify the spend.

While midfielders arguably remain the main target for our funds, Koscielny now averages 7.0 points per appearance – only Sergio Aguero amongst the forwards can better that.

Crucially, the Arsenal man has offered 6.9 points per million; his nearest rival within the ranks of forwards – Jermain Defoe (5.3) – would not even place in the top ten defenders for value.

Aguero as a consistent captaincy option perhaps remains a mainstay. Alongside him, the form of Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa is difficult to ignore.

But the third striker spot is under pressure. The option of deploying 3-5-2 or even 4-4-2 and investing that extra million in defence looks all the more compelling after the events of Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Bonus point magnets so far

I thought I’d take a look at the bonus point stars of the season so far.

I’ve gone for the top 8 as there are a fair few on six bonus so wanted to focus on those elite who have more than that.

I’ve also taken a look at the BPS – to see who is doing well there but may be missing out because others in their team are doing better.

This is more for you to give your thoughts and draw your own conclusions. I’ll give a few of my thoughts but keen to hear your views too.

    Bonus Stars

    Capoue 11
    Aguero 9
    Milner 9
    KDB 9
    Lukaku 8
    Defoe 8
    Blind 7
    Walker 7

    BPS stars

    KDB 199
    Milner 193
    Blind 178
    Costa 173
    Koscielny 172
    Capoue 166
    Walker 165
    Coutinho 164
(Aguero next on 156 over 6 games)

    Conclusions

The obvious conclusion is that if you score you have a good chance of bonus.

Here are the BPS for goals

    Defenders 12, Mids 18, forwards 24

This indicates that good goal scoring strikers in teams where they are the best player will continue to do well. So Aguero, Defoe, Lukaku are great picks. Costa too is worth mentioning. He is fourth for BPS and also has 6 bonus. Still though he has to do more than just score one goal to get those points, with his bonus coming only when there are other goals and assists.

For those such as Capoue – who had an unsustainable shot to goal ratio early on - and Milner - who relies on penalties for goals (he will get more but not 38 a season) - we can arguably expect regression in terms of bonus allocation.

KDB is very interesting. An exceptional BPS rate and bonus allocation with only two goals. Assists have really helped him, but I also suspect his all round play as well. He looks gold as a Fantasy asset this season and certainly a player who those with money in the bank following a possible sale of Ibrahimovic should consider in the coming weeks.

Blind is another interesting player. We all knew last season that the BPS system loves him. If he can cement starts another Fantasy gold player this year. He doesn’t need clean sheets either to do well. That’s key considering Man U’s tough couple of upcoming games.

Feel free to share your thoughts and any analysis about this season’s bonus stars. Baseline bonus point research is particularly welcome – either here or as a community article.

KDB is my idea of this year's highest point scoring player in FPL. However, his stats with Kun in the team before the elbow incident weren't that great if I recall.

Not one for heat maps and stats in great detail but from what i observed watching City Aguero in the team or not had no effect on KDB position.. i think it just took the Belgian a few games to get into the groove..

Just suggested that too. The Swansea game's 2 bonus allocation when Aguero did well was a good marker I think of what we can expect from KDB.

Think KDB breaks the 200 point barrier with ease this season fitness permitting.. had him until injury.. although i was Agueroless at that time.. fitting him back in will be a ball ache

Fitting him back in is easy.
It's keeping Sanchez and Aguero as well that's difficult.

He got 2 bonus in Aguero's comeback game. Also 1 during the elbow game. It may be that he took time to adjust to the Pep way. I'll be keeping a close eye on his BPS when he returns.

KDB will def be FPL top scorer if stays fit. Sanchez if he continues to play up top will run him close.

I’ve been looking at De Bruyne. Do you think it’s possible to make a team with him, Agüero, Sánchez and Costa/Lukaku without having a bad defence? It would be nice with a Liverpool midfielder in addition, of course.

        1. EMERGING STAR

          Of course !

I currently have Sanch, Kun and Lukaku. Can modify as

          Boruc (Jaku)
          Walker Holdebas VanAanholt/Morgan (Collins Kingsley)
          Sanchez KDB Fer Lallana (Capoue)
          Kun Luk Deeney

          0.2 ITB

Can downgrade Deeney to get ANY defender/gk if needed. Can even upgrade Fer.

          As;
          Boruc (Jaku)
          Walker Holdebas VanAanholt/Morgan (Collins Kingsley)
          Sanchez- KDB - Son/Walcot/Antonio - Lallana (Capoue)
          Kun Lukaku Diomande

Thanks! Lallana makes the Liverpool wish come true. I’d actually rather downgrade Fer to invest more in defence and play 4-3-3 – but I know that’s not popular in here.

Now I have Costa instead of Lukaku and Firmino instead Lallana, and my wildcard is long gone, so I'd need to slowly downgrade players, or take several hits to have De Bruyne, Sánchez and Agüero in my team.

If the De Bruyne/Sánchez combination will be difficult to acquire, which of these combinations would you prefer:

            A. Sánchez + Sterling, or
            B. Walcott + De Bruyne (+ £...)?

I would prefer A. Sanchez is a must have and sterling is more than useful. You can replace him easily when needed.

Doubt if wally will continue his form.

But yes, B is not a bad option at all !

Thanks for that very interesting! Perhaps Blind is the most interesting, looking an absolute FPL beast. I considered him since he came into Shaw's position but hadn't fully realised how good he's being doing overall! One to consider big time if he keeps his place over Shaw, cheer!

He was great last season in terms of BPS and other games that are stat based where he was a defender. As he was a mid no one considered him last season which makes him still a little under the radar. If I had a wildcard now I'd get him in.

Again very interesting, thanks. Being a utd fan, I would love to get one in my team in the next few GWs, he might just be the one if he holds down his place (which is highly possible the way he's performing!). GL

True, interesting how Mou has openly criticised Shaw though. Blind has looked so good in the LB role he might keep Shaw out of the team? I would find it a little odd if he was picked as first choice DM but it could happen I guess!

it's tricky. I reckon Blind is probably a better LB than Shaw (right now), but he's also a good enough DMC to be getting in that team for me. And he was a first choice DC last season..

Rose is a good alternative, but has missed 3 matches through injury.
Rose and Walker both appear to be better FPL prospects if they're nailed on than the Spurs central defenders (Alderweireld and Vertonghen).

Don't forget that bonus points are only part of the story - other factors such as clean sheets, goals and assists also contribute to their FPL scores, so bonus points should not be looked at in isolation.

Marmite - people will either love or hate the idea of considering him to be a serious midfield option - like the idea of Capoue being a 4th midfielder.

As a defender, he would have scored one point fewer so far, thanks to conceding 2 goals against Burnley - Liverpool have yet to keep a clean sheet - so not FPL gold after all!

... He would however then be joint top defender with Koscielny (both would have 42 points from 6 games), but he is 0.4m more expensive.

As you said earlier, will Kevin be the best player nobody can afford?

For me, I'm looking in two game weeks to swap Payet for him and downgrade a lesser player to finance it. Firmino to lallana, Lukaku to Benteke, Mustafi to a 5m.

For the latter I can have a front seven of

      Sanchez KDB Firmino Snodgrass
Aguero Lukaku Rashford/Deeney and Fletcher rotting my bench.

Got the exact same plan, except I would have Capoue as 5th mid.

It would mean I had to do 1 of these: dg Coleman to 4,3m def, Walker to 4,7m def, Firmino to Lallana or Lukaku to Benteke. Problem for later 🙂

Coutinho is an interesting one because he has played less than most on that list yet he is still there. Excluding Milner, he is the only Liverpool mid there. Mane and Firmino falling short.

All of the pools are worth it. If somebody had three of them in the team they'd likely be doing amazing. They're all in the top ten players for points aren't they? Scoring so many goals. Yes they will continue to take it in turns. But I would bet that the main four (Milner will surely fade) will only be about ten or so points difference barring injury come end of season.

I really want two and will likely do that after the United match.

For defenders, I think its better to look at baseline BPS.

    What does the freæk says?
    Pick Jak
    Kos Walker Lovren Smith Amat
    Sanchez Sterling Firmino Antonio Capoue
    Kun Lukaku Diomande
    1,4 itb, 1ft.
First thought: Capoue to Snodgrass (much more attacking and Capoue lucky strikes are over?)
Sterling will probably be all right. Of course wait if nothing happens, but if no injuries then pull the trigger? Or more important to upgrade Jak since Pick yellow?

      Pickford will likely be fine.

Guys I need help, had a great start to the season maintaining a Top 50k position, as high as 17k early on. But last 2 weeks have plummeted me to 150k so some clawing back to do.

I'm on holiday next week and Tripadvisor suggests little to no signal and hotel only has wifi in the lobby.

    So this is my team:
    Foster/Pickford
Valencia, Britos (stupid pick because of Holebas 4YC's), Evans, Friend, Love
    Sterling, Antonio, Sanchez, Capoue, Fer
    Aguero, Ibra, Benteke

So thinking I take the opportunity to switch Valenica to maybe Blind or downgrade Valencia to a 4.5m or less defender to release cash to upgrade Fer.

I'm sticking with Ibra because of stats. Antonio also looks good still.

I've currently got no Liverpool and cannot decide who to bring in for GW 9 (Mane, Firm, Cout, Lall). So I'm really tempted to go without as risky as that may be!

Yeah, it's a tough one! He is bombing forward like a beast though and can see future assists. It's just so tough to pick a Liv mid at the moment, seems like it's somebody's elses turn each GW!

          Just to add to this:
If I bring in Milner, I can afford Sanchez at the moment!
So I could do the following move for GW9:

Cazorla + Puncheon to Sanchez + Milner (0.1itb)

Cazorla + Puncheon to Walcott + other LIV mid

Cheers feels a close one, Walcott could prove good value compared to Sanchez later in the season.

                Walcott+Cout/Firm better long term.
the others will outscore Milner over time. i think.

Yeah reckon you're right but still risky to go without Sanchez. It's a close one! Cheers GL

Do players still get an assist from corners. Thought that changed

So presuming I make no transfer which defnders do I play this week. It's not looking very appealing.

    Foster(TOT) / Pickford (stk)
Valencia (liv), Britos (mid), Friend (wat), Evans (TOT), Love doesn't play.

I'm thinking, play Pickford, bench Evans so I'm not doubling up vs TOT.

      Pickford
Valencia. You have him in for attacking returns as well. Plus he's a Jose defender away from home.
Britos and Evans. Boro don't score much and you never know with Pulis.

I'd play those at home, Britos + Friend

Where do you guys think I should prioritise making changes?

    Pickford Robinson

    Bellerin Valencia Baines Daniels Collins

    Ozil Cazorla Firmino Antonio Capoue

    Aguero Defoe Rashford

    1FT, 0.2ITB

Team value is crap due to poor FPL life choices! I was thinking downgrade Valencia to 4.0 def, Caz to wally/son for a -4 and look to upgrade ozil to KDB when back. Sound reasonable?

Just stick man. Arsenal have Swansea at home with no manager next. You can't justify taking out their players until after that and 2 free will give you more scope.

Payet or lukaku who is better for the next coming weeks? I currently own both but one needs to on my wc:
    Payet: cry SUN eve STO
    Lukaku: mci bur WHU che

Lukakus fixtures seem tricky and they struggled last two games

Mustafi of those two. I couldn't afford the extra for the others. He's nailed, playing really well and more of a goal threat.

I actually think he'll catch some players out who will all be on the other two. Watch this space.

No really. I can see the future.

Mustafi - Gibbs may get the odd game. I'd think the centre halves are more likely to stick together and do less running, hence less rotation.

    Best move for GW9:

    A. Cazorla + Puncheon to Walcott + Liv mid (10.3itb)

    B. Cazorla + Puncheon to Sanchez + Milner (leaving 0.1itb)

Who would you rather have over the next 4?

    A) Deeney (mid,swa,HUL,liv)

    B) CWilson (HUL,TOT,mid,SUN)

If I get Deeney, I would be able to upgrade Redmond to Son/Lallana/Arnautovic next week.

If I get CWilson, I would be able to get Coutinho for Redmond or any of the above I mentioned.

How does this look after doing:

    Ozil to Walcott
    Leko to Son
    Valencia to Francis

    Cech/ Pickford
    Holebas/ Baines/ Francis/ PVA/ Amat
    Walcott/ Son/ Firmiono/ Amtonio/ Hjobjerg
    Kun/ Lukaku/ Costa

    Would you suggest different changes?

    Thanks

Arsenal and Southampton would be my two picks. Arsenal have a good chance for clean sheets in their next 3 matches. What's your budget?

How does this team look like? Planning a bit for the future already.

    Heaton | Pickford
    Verthongen | Cedric | A.Smith | Holebas | Amat
    Sanchez | KDB | Payet | Snodgrass | Carrick
    Aguero | Lukaku | Diomande

    0.7 ITB

So going for 4-4-2 most of the time. I was looking for a way to get Sanchez, KDB, Payet and Kun in the same team.

For what it's worth Stoke didn't manage a CS in their first 7 games last season and then went on to keep 8 in the next 11, albeit they weren't conceding 4 goals on the regular.
