Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 9

We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 9.

Saturday’s two goals has seen Theo Walcott (7.8) continue to emerge as a viable captaincy alternative to Alexis Sanchez (11.3) in the Arsenal attack.

Following that brace against Swansea, Walcott welcomes a Middlesbrough side to the Emirates with just a single clean sheet to their name. No player has had more shots on target than the England international, who has also scored five times in the league and is currently the most popular transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9.

Sanchez, who is in 23.7% of FPL teams, has been no slouch either this season with four goals and three assists. The Chilean, who clinched the top spot in the Captain Poll last time out, is expected to once again feature amongst the top candidates for the armband in Gameweek 9. Team-mate Mesut Ozil (9.5) also offered a reminder of his armband potential with a goal against Swansea on Saturday.

Manchester City serve up a variety of choices this week, but with a resolute Southampton side visiting the Etihad, leading captaincy contenders Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) may have to toil for points.

City could also be weary after their Champions League exertions against Barcelona and up against a Saints outfit who may well shuffle the pack for their own European tie on Thursday to preserve some legs.

Claude Puel’s side have two clean sheets on the road already, and Aguero’s stock as a captain took a major dent in Gameweek 8 when he finished with negative points after emerging from the bench to miss a penalty.

De Bruyne also fluffed his lines from the spot on Saturday, although with eight goal attempts against Everton, he was City’s most vibrant threat on goal. Following an injury lay off the Belgian differential is only owned by 8.7% of FPL managers, compared to Aguero’s 44.8%.

With West Brom visiting, Liverpool’s midfielders continue to offer strong alternatives.

But, as ever, deciding which of Sadio Mane (9.0), Roberto Firmino (8.5) or Philippe Coutinho (8.3) will rack up the highest points tally may prove too difficult.

West Ham’s home encounter with a Sunderland side without an away clean sheet, presents Dimitri Payet (9.4) as a key captaincy contender. The Black Cats are winless and have shipped 15 goals in their eight Premier League outings – they will surely be stretched to contain Payet’s influence.

For those who favour form over fixture, the Premier League’s Golden Boot leader Diego Costa looks an enticing option for Chelsea’s home clash with Man United.

The Blues striker has seven goals this term and, with maximum FPL bonus points from just one goal over the weekend, looks to have upped his all-round game. It is little wonder Costa has already earned a price hike this week to 10.2 and seen his ownership soar to 32.4%.

Romelu Lukaku’s (9.4) strike at the Etihad took his tally to six goals in five outings, yet he travels to a Burnley side that have yet to ship more than a single goal in any of their five matches at Turf Moor.

Leicester City’s plum home clash with Palace’s porous defence looks promising, yet Claudio Ranieri seems to have stepped up his penchant for rotation and is likely to deter most.

Islam Slimani has netted twice in two top-flight appearances at the King Power Stadium and could be a real differential with under 2% ownership.

With 13 goals conceded in their last three fixtures, Hull City have swiftly switched from surprise package to whipping boys over the first nine Gameweeks.

This could make Stoke’s 1.3% owned midfielder Marko Arnautovic (7.2), who had four goal attempts against Sunderland at the weekend, an intriguing captaincy candidate when he visits the KC Stadium on Saturday.

Joe Allen – second only to Walcott as a current transfer target – could even tempt some as an option having returned four goals in his last four Premier League outings.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Drunkenly put Allen in for Capoue last night with my FT... hopefully this isn't too bad a line up for this week, right?

    Pickford
    Mustafi Pieters Walker
    Antonio Allen Firmino San(c)hez
    Kun Kaku Costa

If that pillsner hadn't have gotten in the way, I wouldn't have been able to afford much more with just 1 transfer... so maybe it's a good inebriated impulse transfer after all 🙂

    Thanks Holsten Pils...

Not sure Antonio is an option any longer imo, with that said they are against Sunderland

Yeah I wasn't sure whether to remove him or sort out my defence last week - I obviously opted for the latter.

I decided to keep him for this game vs. Sunderland.

As Capoue was your 4th midfielder I think Capoue to Allen was about the best move you could do really.

Anotonio may look a less preferable choice than Walcott but that's because Walcott is way under-priced. For a 'normal' 7.3m mid Antonio is fine, he has as good a chance of points as Sigurdsson or Arnautovic or Willian for example.

Cheers Ruth - yeah if Antonio blanks again he's coming out, but I was thinking I'd give him both the game just gone vs cpl and SUN hence why I did those defensive moves last week (your suggestion Pieters and the reasoning behind it was a good un that swayed me, so thanks for that!)

Hopefully Allen is able to keep it up! Capoue was awful for the time I had him - I only made money on him rather than any points! - so I felt obliged to cycle him out as soon as a replacement could be found.

Betcha there's an injury in the UCL now 🙂

Yep. I had to jump early with my 2 FTs to avoid the Walcott rise, I had 0.0 spare. Don't like doing that but who knows, with a bit of luck Theo will get rested on Wednesday.

I still have to consider Valencia to Clyne for a hit. That's a move I'm very keen on, especially as Clyne should fall to 5.4m if he doesn't play tonight (or if he plays and blanks). Would be my first hit of the season if I do it though.

Yeah I hate doing early transfers, I wouldn't have normally if I wasn't inebriated. Nevermind - it happens sometimes. Hopefully our assets will be fine during the week!

I also hate hits, but if you have a real gut instinct about it I'd say go for it - I won my ML last year by doing Deeney in for Aguero on a Saturday morning for a -4, which saw Deeney score a last min brace and Kun blank. Would've always regretted it if I didn't... such a grandiose statement I know, but FPL can make you feel that way if your ML is competitive :).

That said, I'm not sure about Valencia to Clyne - Mourinho back to Chelsea with United has got to be a park the bus scenario, right? Would Clyne get a clean sheet + extra points to justify the -4 against WBA? Hmm... can see your quandary as I write it out, because he might well do considering it's only Chadli who is a threat for Brom.
See how it's looking EoW, I'd say 🙂

It's less about Valencia than Clyne. In my view he stands a good chance of being the highest-scoring defender in FPL between now and Xmas. He's just a player I really want and losing Valencia is the only way to get him without surgery to my squad.

It's a move I will almost certainly make on Friday or Saturday if there's no injury doubt.

Actually the 'no hits' thing is very unlike me. Usually I have taken 3 or 4 hits by this stage of the season. 😕

Ah I see - I'm normally very cautious and let my rivals take the -4+, I tend to find that if I remove a player for any reason they will suddenly perform and troll me, so my strategy lies in trying to minimise the emotional risk to myself lol!

But yes Clyne is a great move. I actually removed Lovren this week to finance Mustafi in (oops, in hindsight). Will just have to see how it plays out this week, but I'd definitely see the value in making it!

Yeah I (knowingly) swapped Capoue for Allen last night and he's gone up £0.1m this morning. Made a nice 0.4m windfall on Capoue but I reckon his price will start to drop now.

    Heaton Pickford
    Baines Valencia Holebas Evans Amat
    Wally Hazard Firminho Antonio Capoue
    Kun Tekkers Lukaku

Really not one to post my team, but I have 2 FT and 0.2 ITB. Really.dknt know what to do first.

Baines should start, Valencia is CS material. Evans suspended but 4th def so could hang fire. Antonio at RWB, but playing Sunderland could be gold, Capoue I could cash in on.

Front three are ok for now I think

What would you do? Swaying toward Baines out but he's on pens!

Maybe remove Evans for a Stoke player? They have Hull next and really good fixtures overall - I stuck Pieters in this week and he got me 8 points, convinced they should keep a few more over the next 7.

Few questions that I can't decide. Help please:

    1. Fletcher, Whelan, Coquelin or de Roon as 5th mid
    2. Mustafi or Monreal
    3. Valencia + Vertonghen OR Mustafi + Williams
    4. Snoddy to Allen (4th mid) OR Capoue to Fletcher (5th mid)
    5. Valencia, Allen (5th mid) OR Mustafi, 4.4 (5th mid)

      1) Fletcher or De Roon. Maybe Fletcher as less YC prone. But both will get you 2 points per week.
      2) Mustafi seems to have a lot more attacking threat. Hit the bar vs. Swansea.
      3) Mustafi and Williams, I'd say
      4) Hard to tell without seeing your full team, dude. Maybe Capoue to Fletcher, Snoddy does have a good run, even if confidence in Hull is very low atm given their drubbing this weekend
      5) I'd go Mustafi and 4.4 - do you have Allen or not?

Agreed that your defence is looking poor, but it's so unstable atm in terms of C

Maybe Jevans to Pieters? I got him in for the week just gone and he got me 8pts, has Hull next and they have really strong fixtures til December.

If not, save and then do more radical surgery next week! I reckon you could struggle through with your defence as it stands, CS are so hard to predict atm (nothing akin to Chelsea 14/15 with banker CS every week) that whoever you remove could well end up getting a 15 pter..

I went to the Palace vs West Ham game and although he was at wingback Antonio still looked a real threat. Multiple times he drove through the palace team and could have had a couple of assists. Still a very direct threat. Would keep for next game and then ship. Sunderland just too accommodating.

I really want to do Antonio -> Walcott, but to free up funds I need to take a -4 on one of:

    a) Baines-> Pieters
    b) Snodgras-> Allen (rotate Allen/Capoue?)
    c) Suggestions?

Id probably just do Capoue to 4.4 and call it a day.

Why do Capoue -> Fletcher when neither seem to be moving price and Capoue is a better option and you're not using the funds? Saving a transfer would be a better option in that case.

You are freeing up funds for the next week when youre inevitably transferring out Antonio after his Sunderland game. I wouldnt take a hit.

Not Snoddy. Siggy. Snodgrass on the brain.

Does anyone see Jakupovic getting a recall?

Otherwise Jaku to Heaton a good move?

It's a good move whether he gets recalled or not.

Hull are bad enough to neutralise any save points their GK manages to get. 😕

    Heaton

    Amat, Pieters, Kone, Valencia, Smith

    Sterling, Firmino, Sanchez, Capoue, Son

    Aguero, Costa, Deeney

    0 itb

Sterling & Kone to Walcott and Holebas for a hit or keep Kone as bench fodder ? Sterling to Walcott frees up .5 to upgrade Valencia to Mustafi

    Allen vs Capoue

For those who own Capoue since gw1 or 2, is this the time to change our 5th mid or stick with him?
Allen's form is really tempting me and price rise is imminent. No doubt.
Could get away with 0.1 profit too, at least for now.

Just used my Wildcard what do you think?
    In Out
    Karius Courtois
    Smith McAuley
    Pieters Stones
    Walcott Alli
    Firmino Antonio
    De Bruyne Capoue
    Deeney Agüero
    Pickford Jakupovic
    Vertonghen Shaw
    Fer Kanté

Now my team looks like this

    Jakupovic - Pickford
    Walker - Vertonghen - Smith - Pieters - Amat
Walcott - Firmino - De Bruyne - Coutinho - Fer
    Lukaku - Deeney - Costa

Thinking of putting the captain on Walcott next week against Middlesborough.
