Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 9

We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 9.

Saturday’s two goals has seen Theo Walcott (7.8) continue to emerge as a viable captaincy alternative to Alexis Sanchez (11.3) in the Arsenal attack.

Following that brace against Swansea, Walcott welcomes a Middlesbrough side to the Emirates with just a single clean sheet to their name. No player has had more shots on target than the England international, who has also scored five times in the league and is currently the most popular transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9.

Sanchez, who is in 23.7% of FPL teams, has been no slouch either this season with four goals and three assists. The Chilean, who clinched the top spot in the Captain Poll last time out, is expected to once again feature amongst the top candidates for the armband in Gameweek 9. Team-mate Mesut Ozil (9.5) also offered a reminder of his armband potential with a goal against Swansea on Saturday.

Manchester City serve up a variety of choices this week, but with a resolute Southampton side visiting the Etihad, leading captaincy contenders Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) may have to toil for points.

City could also be weary after their Champions League exertions against Barcelona and up against a Saints outfit who may well shuffle the pack for their own European tie on Thursday to preserve some legs.

Claude Puel’s side have two clean sheets on the road already, and Aguero’s stock as a captain took a major dent in Gameweek 8 when he finished with negative points after emerging from the bench to miss a penalty.

De Bruyne also fluffed his lines from the spot on Saturday, although with eight goal attempts against Everton, he was City’s most vibrant threat on goal. Following an injury lay off the Belgian differential is only owned by 8.7% of FPL managers, compared to Aguero’s 44.8%.

With West Brom visiting, Liverpool’s midfielders continue to offer strong alternatives.

But, as ever, deciding which of Sadio Mane (9.0), Roberto Firmino (8.5) or Philippe Coutinho (8.3) will rack up the highest points tally may prove too difficult.

West Ham’s home encounter with a Sunderland side without an away clean sheet, presents Dimitri Payet (9.4) as a key captaincy contender. The Black Cats are winless and have shipped 15 goals in their eight Premier League outings – they will surely be stretched to contain Payet’s influence.

For those who favour form over fixture, the Premier League’s Golden Boot leader Diego Costa looks an enticing option for Chelsea’s home clash with Man United.

The Blues striker has seven goals this term and, with maximum FPL bonus points from just one goal over the weekend, looks to have upped his all-round game. It is little wonder Costa has already earned a price hike this week to 10.2 and seen his ownership soar to 32.4%.

Romelu Lukaku’s (9.4) strike at the Etihad took his tally to six goals in five outings, yet he travels to a Burnley side that have yet to ship more than a single goal in any of their five matches at Turf Moor.

Leicester City’s plum home clash with Palace’s porous defence looks promising, yet Claudio Ranieri seems to have stepped up his penchant for rotation and is likely to deter most.

Islam Slimani has netted twice in two top-flight appearances at the King Power Stadium and could be a real differential with under 2% ownership.

With 13 goals conceded in their last three fixtures, Hull City have swiftly switched from surprise package to whipping boys over the first nine Gameweeks.

This could make Stoke’s 1.3% owned midfielder Marko Arnautovic (7.2), who had four goal attempts against Sunderland at the weekend, an intriguing captaincy candidate when he visits the KC Stadium on Saturday.

Joe Allen – second only to Walcott as a current transfer target – could even tempt some as an option having returned four goals in his last four Premier League outings.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

What do you reckon I do with this lot lads:

    Heaton - Foster
    Bellerin - Walker - Holebas - Pieters - Amat
    Sanchez - Walcott - Firmino - Antonio - Fletcher
    Aguero - Austin - Rashford

2FTS and 1.1m in the bank.

I'm considering letting Austin rise this week and then cashing in before getting him back in a few weeks time. Maybe switch both him and Rashford this week?

Personally, I think Austin will do fine in the "tough" fixtures. City aren't keeping CS. The games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton are all at home for Saints. Austin has a history of scoring against those kinds of teams during his time at QPR in the PL.

I'm probably trying to be too smart about it.

He does seem the type of striker who always seems to get chances.

Keep Austin I reckon still getting transferred in. Wait on Rashford tonight see what he's like.

Solid team all round though difficult to see any pressing transfers.

I would think twice before selling Austin. Neither City, Chelsea nor Liverpool are getting regular clean sheets (Liverpool have none), so an in form striker for an in form team should not be sold imho. I am definitely keeping.

Feel like a real numpty ditching Costa on Sat. Thought 4YCs and a game vs UTD spelled certain suspension...before realising he can serve his ban in the EFL cup.

I've now got Deeney (in order to upgrade my MID), and i'm already unhappy. Austin and Wilson looking like better options.

Given i've already taken a 4 point hit...is it time to roll out the WC - correct my mistake and set up for the next 2 months?

    3. pompeyfan

I wouldn't say that Austin and Wilson suddenly look like better options than Deeney. Wilson was playing Sunderland and he now appears not to be on pens. Austin doesn't have great fixtures.

I was a bit annoyed at picking Bony over Austin and Wilson, but when you see the highlights it could've been very different.

"Wilson... now appears not to be on pens."

Some teams do that thing where the player that is fouled for the penalty doesn't take it. Wilson won the penalty that Stanislas took. 😕

Leicester look like they are prioritising a good CL adventure at the moment. They know they aren't going to finish above 8th in the PL.

I wouldn't therefore be jumping on any Leicester players till the CL group stage is done. They really didn't offer much at Chelsea last weekend and all their swagger is gone.

    Mane, Firmino, Sanchez, Walcott(C), Son

Allen is due to rise tonight, right? Contemplating Antonio or Capoue out for him, although Antonio has a great fixture this week.

Then next week bringing in Sterling for whoever remains btwn Antonio & Capoue.

Perhaps a hit also either this week or next to bring in Holebas for Baines. So revised team will look like this in 2 weeks time:

    Foster (Pickford)
    Bellerin--Valencia--Holebas (Pieters, Amat)
    Sanchez--Firmino--Sterling--Walcott--Allen
    Aguero--Lukaku (Diomande)

Always adapting to what happens, but this seems good for the upcoming 4-5 weeks fixtures?

Thanks, yeah Son was the other consideration, I think he'll do well but Sterling's fixtures tempted me over him.

And good call on the no hit re defender - might just keep Baines a week or two longer thenand see what he does.

That's definitely an interesting move - my thinking in playing the 3-5-2 is that midfielders a long way down could potentially outscore the "secondary" strikers long-term (sometimes even the primary ones), although Austin's recent form makes it hard to ignore him!

    Heaton Pickford
    Baines Mustafi Amat Valencia Evans

    Which one:
    A. Baines/Valencia to pieters/holebas
    B. Sterling to Wally

Regarding Sanchez vs Walcott for captaincy next week:

Do you think that Walcott became more central against Swansea due to Sanchez's lack of fitness or slight tiredness - I noticed he was coming deeper and not running into the box as much as Walcott.

Me too, he always seems to do well for me when I have him.

I have a bit of a reservation about how Bradley will set that team out though. He has a reputation as a bit of a defensive manager.

The real swing in Swansea's fixtures begins in GW13/15. By then Bradley's plan will be clearer and that's when I'll be looking at Siggy. Very likely a defender (Taylor) too.

    Worth doing Chadli > Walcott & Kone > Holebas for a -4

    Would leave me with:

    Pickford / Heaton

    Bellerin / Holebas / Lovren / Evans / Amat

    Sanchez / Walcott / Coutinho / Snodgrss / Capoue

    Aguero / Lukaku / Benteke

    ?

Don't think the Holebas transfer is worth taking a hit for

Kone & lovren potentially injured so need to move one on as with Evans suspension could be left with just Bellerin & Amat this week.

        Hopefully Lovren starts tonight

I hate taking points hits for defenders, so usually would advise against it. Looking at that team, I would also rather get rid of Capoue/Snodgrass before Chadli. He looks like the only one capable of scoring in that WBA side...

yeah agree that Chadli is looking better. Problem is has a abd run of fixtures + if i was to take Snograss out instead i couldn't afford Walcott.

I've got 1.8 ITB so would be a max of 7.2 for a replacement mid

Is Allen good enough to replace Snodgrass as 4th mid?

struggling with that question too. I'm afraid not.

if he's only a 5th though, why the bandwagon?

on form, good fixtures, nice pick to cash out on capoue but I don't know is he good enough to be 4th mid

Not in my opinion, but it all comes down to how you like to line up.

I have seen some good teams with that rotation. If you feel confident with how your team is balanced, I suggest you should go for it.

I've had a shocker this week 31 points with Coutinho to play...

Feeling fairly positive for next week given the fixtures, I should probable save my FT, however I have a habit of tinkering every week! Team is (1FT, £0.0 itb)

    Cech (Jaku)
    Williams, Koscienly, Amat, (Lovren), (Evans)
    Coutinho, Son, Sterling, Walcott, (Capoue)
    Agureo, Deenery, Lukaku

I want to free up funds for KDB. Ideas?

I don't think he is essential. I'd sit on the transfer and have 2 next week. Son could be one to give way

Think you're not in a minority - lots of horror stories on here and a few that would probably love to swap their scores for a 31!

Yeah I love a tinker. I should be better at leaving it but I never can haha

To free up funds for KdB you'll have to decide which of your midfield goes, then make changes like downgrading Cech to a budget keeper and Williams/Lovren as well, plus maybe replacing Jevans with a 3.9 to maximise your money.

A good start is probably to take Lovren or Williams out for a 3.9 "3rd bencher" who will never see the light of day for you to free up ~1m...? I'd favour removing Williams and keeping Lovren, who has good fixtures.

I'm a big fan of KDB so want to get him back in asap. Might have to be next week with 2FT and take a (-4) to do:

        Son > Snoddy
        Capoue > Allen
        Sterling > KDB

Not sure if he's worth that though!

Hmm, I'd be worried about sacrificing Son, effectively, to bring in KdB - I can get behind Allen and KdB in (I've done the second move myself this week) but yeah not sure.

          Can you maybe do :

          Cech --> Grant
          Willliams --> 3.9
          Sterling --> KdB?

DK how much money that frees up for you, but that might be a way to do it - you'll have to really make sacrifices to get him in.

What would you do here or save the FT? Thanks

    Foster/Heaton

    Walker - Valencia - Williams (Smith/Souare*)

Hazard - Ozil - Antonio - Zaha (Capoue)

    Aguero - Lukaku - Rashford

Pick 2 to switch between for playing 4th mid

    A) Capoue
    B) Snoddy
    C) Allen
    D) Fer
    E) Puncheon

B and C, though D and E are the rotation pair in terms of fixtures actually.

It depends how much you want to have points on the bench - I'd be tempted to get a 4.4 and then play one of those guys (I've removed Capoue for Allen for the time being) and reinvest the money elsewhere in your team

I am thinking Snoddy > Allen (free some cash) and rotate between him and Capoue
If Capoue is no longer an option in coming weeks, cash in and get 4.5 or lower
