Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 9 – The Strong

Our latest look at the teams with the most favourable upcoming schedules sees Liverpool top the bill, while Stoke City players should continue to provide excellent value over the next six Gameweeks.

Liverpool

(WBA, cpl, WAT, sot, SUN, bou)

Jurgen Klopp’s men avoid all of the current top seven over the next six Gameweeks, suggesting Reds assets should be at the forefront of our thinking.

Liverpool had been in fine goalscoring form before Monday night’s goalless draw against Manchester United and should be able to get some joy against Sunderland and West Brom, in particular, with both sides in the top five for shots conceded inside the box over the last four Gameweeks.

It’s only the Gameweek 12 trip to Southampton that looks a tricky match-up for the Reds attack, so while only the Sunderland clash appears to be a plum fixture, there should be ample opportunities for Liverpool’s in-form midfielders to earn returns.

After gaining their first clean sheet of the season against United, the possibility for further shut-outs also appears strong over the next few weeks.

Sunderland have only scored three goals in their last four matches, while West Brom have netted just three times in their four away matches so far.

Once again, it’s only the Southampton fixture that looks a testing one for the Reds rearguard, so there’s every chance the likes of Loris Karius and Dejan Lovren can provide solid value over the next six Gameweeks, with Nathaniel Clyne the strongest option should your budget stretch that far.

Stoke City

(hul, SWA, whm, BOU, wat, BUR)

According to our Season Ticker, it’s the Potters who have the most favourable upcoming schedule over the coming period.

Mark Hughes’ side face just one side currently in the top half of the table, while they’ll square up to two teams, Hull City and Swansea City, who are currently propping up the form chart.

From a defensive perspective, it’s perhaps the Hull City and Burnley fixtures that appear the most appealing, with both sides ranked in the bottom four for total goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, scoring three goals apiece.

Additionally, Bournemouth have failed to score in two of their four away matches, while West Ham have only created three big chances over the last four Gameweeks, so there does look to be a realistic chance of defensive returns in the majority of the Potters’ upcoming fixtures.

With Jack Butland expected to remain sidelined with an ankle injury for at least the next month, the value offered by goalkeeper Lee Grant cannot be ignored, while Erik Pieters appears to provide the bargain option in the back four.

At the other end of the pitch, the forthcoming fixture list looks hugely promising for the prospects of Stoke attackers.

Hull, Swansea, West Ham and Burnley hold the top four spots for goals conceded over the last four Gameweeks, while Bournemouth rank joint-sixth for big chances conceded over the same period with seven.

Watford, meanwhile, have shipped goals in each of their four matches at Vicarage Road this season, so the lure of owning a Potters attacker appears strong at this point.

Joe Allen looks the obvious target given his current form, although Marko Arnautovic and Wilfried Bony may also thrive over the next month or so. It’s worth noting, though, that the Austrian is now just one booking short of a single-match suspension after earning a fourth yellow of the season on Saturday.

Man City

(SOT, wba, MID, cpl, bur, CHE)

With City avoiding all of the current top four in the next six matches, we should see the premium assets on show at the Etihad live up to their lofty price tags.

Burnley rank second for shots conceded inside the box over the last four Gameweeks and third for big chances allowed, so despite their strong defensive record at home, Pep Guardiola’s men may still be able to shine at Turf Moor in Gameweek 13.

It’s pretty surprising that Middlesbrough have only conceded two big chances over the last four Gameweeks, despite letting in seven goals. But that fixture also appears pretty favourable for the Citizens, while West Brom’s defensive record on home turf isn’t particularly strong, making that another decent match-up.

The Southampton and Chelsea clashes could be slightly more difficult for the City attack, but it’s fair to say that Sergio Aguero should remain a popular captain choice through the next six Gameweeks, despite his poor showing last weekend, while Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling may also have big scores beckoning.

The Middlesbrough and Burnley match-ups look very enticing from a defensive standpoint, with both teams ranked in the bottom four for both shots inside the box and big chances created over the last four Gameweeks.

Clean sheets appear strong possibilities there, then, while the Crystal Palace and, to a lesser extent, West Brom fixtures are also reasonably favourable.

But having only kept one clean sheet so far, and given the Southampton and Chelsea matches will present fairly testing examinations of their defence, Fantasy managers may still be slightly hesitant in investing members of City’s backline.

Rotation is also a concern with Vincent Kompany now back fit, so outside of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, investing in a defender looks to have limited appeal.

Also Consider

Hull City
The Tigers have endured a tough start to the campaign, but their schedule (STO, wat, SOT, sun, WBA, mid) eases dramatically over the coming period.

In terms of Hull’s attacking potential, all of the next six matches appear to offer hope in terms of being able to pick up goals, although it’s perhaps the matches on the road at Sunderland and Middlesbrough that seem the most favourable.

There don’t appear to be many appealing options in the Hull attack outside of Robert Snodgrass, though.

Defensively, it’s again the Middlesbrough and Sunderland clashes that stand out as the most likely to yield a clean sheet for Mike Phelan’s men.

But with Andrew Robertson now set to be sidelined for between six to eight weeks with a calf injury, and having conceded 17 goals in their last four matches, it’s unlikely many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses will be rushing to bring in a Hull defender.

Leicester City
The Foxes only face one difficult fixture, away to Tottenham Hotspur, in the next six (CPL, tot, WBA, wat, MID, sun), so Leicester City players may come back onto our radars over the coming weeks.

Those five favourable matches should see Claudio Ranieri’s men get amongst the goals, with the Palace, ‘Boro and Sunderland clashes perhaps the key match-ups.

Jamie Vardy, Islam Slimani and Riyad Mahrez could all be able to flourish over the coming period, then, although with so many in-form options for our front eight positions, the trio will struggle to attract investment. Ranieri’s recent rotation policy may also deter most from rolling the dice on their attackers.

The Foxes have kept three clean sheets at home already this season, so it’s members of their backline that may prove to be the shrewdest purchases over the next few weeks.

Those Palace, West Brom and ‘Boro clashes all look promising, and with decent away trips to Watford and Sunderland also on the agenda, Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs may warrant some consideration.

Watford
Walter Mazzarri’s side have four favourable matches (swa, HUL, STO, wba) in the next six, with the Hornets also having to contend with a trip to Liverpool, and a home clash against Leicester.

Given the Foxes porous defensive record on the road, conceding 13 goals in four matches, that match-up is actually a pretty favourable one for the Watford attack. The Hull fixture should also prove fruitful, while with three other decent fixtures, Troy Deeney should remain one of the leading options for our third forward slot.

With Stoke and Swansea improving in front of goal of late, and with Leicester also providing a difficult challenge, the fixtures aren’t quite so appealing from a defensive point of view.

But there may still be a clean sheet or two in there, and with Jose Holebas also providing an attacking threat, he remains one of the leading budget defenders available to us. The Greek international is one yellow card away from a one-match ban, though.

I believe city will have a clean sheet against saints(they will be tired after europa league and i expect city more solid after everton draw).they can make a clean sheet with boro as well and maybe with west brom.
Liverpool has 3 fixtures with dangerous attacking teams(cp,WT,sou) and i found diffcult for a clean sheet.
I think better get stones now and in gw 13 buy lovren.what do you think?

I'm seriously thinking that De Bruyne's a better option than Aguero for City coverage and that downgrading Aguero -> Costa to upgrade someone like Son -> De Bruyne is worth it. In an ideal world, I would have both of them, except unfortunately I don't have the budget to do this without destroying the rest of my team. Am I crazy to be considering this??

De Bruyne already has 3 games of above 10+ points so he is no slouch in terms of being able to get a massive score. Yes, he's no Aguero, but his ceiling is still very high.

I'll probably keep Aguero because it's Aguero but I'm all so tempted by KDB

Its not about Sanchez, but about the player you bring in for him + the extra money you can invest in someone else. I sold a few weeks ago Sanchez and Capue and got in Walcot and Son. I never regreted in for the second. Will i regret ir in the futere??? I dont think so. There are so many good midfilders at the price range 7.0-8.5 that I can run 2 of the for the price of Sanchez + some cheap defender I never going to use.

Surely kdb and coutinho will get more points than sanchez and Shaqiri.

Also feel it just a matter of time before wenger does something stupid and moves sanchez out wide again

    RP. Choose one each:

    1. Best way to get some cash
    A) Capoue to Fletcher
    B) Evans to 3.9

    2. Best way to upgrade defense
    A) Williams -> Clyne
    B) Valencia -> Mustafi
    D) Williams -> Vertonghen (only with 1.B answer)

Valencia, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat - 2FT, 0 idb

I think he means that he already have Holebas and that he'll consider fielding him.

And, I wouldn't advise anyone to take a hit for a defender, very rarely does it work out.

      1. Allen
      2. Snodgrass

When it comes to Capue the statictics show that he was very, very lucky with the points he got at the start of the season. He had like 1 shot on the target per mach that went in and its the same for other stats too. In the long run he is not the player you want on your team and in my opinion you shoud sell him not bring him in. Allen is actually a very good number 4 midfielder that you can play and not just let him rotten on the bench. He plays in much more andvanced rolle in Stoke then in Liverpool and thats why he scores and is much more involved in offensive gameplay

Is Baston going to start? If so I assume Sigg behind him and Fer at #8 but still going forward. All three look like options right now and I tip them to find some form.

If Antonio scored most of his points last season from wingback why sell him against SUN?

Is Allen a decent 4th mid choice?

Should I keep Ibra til BUR?

Agree about Swansea hitting some form, especially attacking wise.

Hammers don't have the personnel to play 3-4-3 this week with Cresswell and probably also Arbeloa out. Antonio can ofc still score at RB, but my bet is that others will score for Hammers

      1. Don't know much about Swansea but I'm guessing that Baston will start.
      2. West Ham are crap this season and his point totals this season has dropped since he's returned to that RWB role.

I'm thinking of a punt on Baston. My third striker has been rubbish all season (the latest one was bringing in Ighalo after his father had passed away) so I feel as if I have nothing to lose but I can't expect my mids to keep bailing me out, I need that third striker doing something.

Kind of looking like a gamble on Baston or Bony with fixtures or Austin with horrible fixtures. Really unsure

Austin thrives at home so I'll wait for a banger like BUR. Bony looked decent last match and I think is a great option. Baston great punt as he finally has match fitness, scored a goal and was really quality in La Liga last season. Unfortunately like Andy I dont have the balls to sell Ibra with BUR coming up

Austin next 5 are mci, CHE, hul, LIV, EVE. I know three are at home but why would you bring in a striker with those fixtures? After that it clears up a bit alright but that is over a month away who knows what will have changed by then?

Allen's stats are very similar to Capou by all accounts. His are a little better but not enough for his improbable scoring run.

Allen 10 shots, 7 inside the box, 5 on target and 4 goals. Nobody scores with 80% of their shots on target, not even the top strikers so Allen should probably be on closer to 1 goal for what his stats are reading, possibly 2 if he got lucky.

Capou 10 shots, 5 inside the box, 5 on target and 4 goals. Incredibly similar to Allen but you seem to favour one over the other for some reason?

      1. Econ Man
          7 years, 6 months ago

I just wanted to mention I had a look at your SiB fallacy table. I did multiple regression on the 15/16 data, and it convincingly showed that shots in the box definitely correlates very highly with goals. The model I got was:

          goals = 0.120*(shots inside) -0.198*(SYB shots) + 0.3802661*(big chances) + 0.0001*(touches) -0.062
          R2=0.88

The robust t statistic for shots inside was 5.13, which is very, very significant. The size of the effect is as big as expected as well. Including penalties 14 % of goals inside the box are scored. Here a shot inside is expected to increase the number of goals at the end of the season with 0.12, even when you have controlled for big chances.

I don't think I've ever knocked sib stats. The ability of the striker and the type of shot (is it a header, volley under pressure or a one on one etc etc) does have to be taken into account but I use this stay a lot myself too.

It is touches in the box (tib) that I think is almost worse than useless as a stat. There seems to be no correlation between touches in the box and goals scored.

            1. Econ Man
                7 years, 6 months ago

Well, you named the table as "SiB fallacy" and further described it as "Table to prove no correlation between goals and SiB". I only took you at your own word.

I think indeed it might be a fallacy to look at touches in the penalty area, and I found no effect here... The thing is that touches in the box might possibly predict more shots and chances created in the future, but I haven't really bothered to check it.

The way I do my own predictions is in 2 steps (for goals inside the box). First I model shots inside the area, and secondly I model the conversion rate (partly because I want to see what's going on). The number of shots inside is easy to model, and I doubt adding penalty touches would change much, while conversion rates are hard to predict. The correlation for conversion rates between years is only something like 0.2.

Really sorry about that. I do more or less the same as you actually.

If you have time or the inclination have a look at tib and correlation with goals (or even shots I'd guess). I must rename that table

I agree that Allen is a better pick than Capoue but it's not like he has great stats either. In fact he's scored his 4 goals from 10 shots, the same numbers as Capoue.

1FT (happy with the team and not selling Antonio before the Sunderland game)

        a) Baines to Clyne
        b) save (play Amat vs WAT)

I want a Pool defender for the upcoming run of games. Not sure if Lovren will be better value and I think that Clyne is the most nailed of Pool's D line. Clyne also has the attacking stats (crazy attacking stats that is), but that comes at +0.6M.

Lovren leaves me with 8M for an Antonio replacement and Clyne leaves me with 7.4M. This is not an issue since all my potential targets for Antonio are below 7.4M (not interested in Son currently).

the only option that Lover enables for me is Son (I don't want a Spurs player right now)

            potential replacements for Antonio are:
