Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Mahrez edges Leicester to within touching distance of the knock-out stages while Lloris saves Spurs in Germany. Here’s the key moments from Tuesday’s Champions League matches…

Bayer Leverkusen 0 Tottenham Hotspur 0

It’s been a good few days for keepers. After Sunday’s Tom Heaton heroics and David de Gea’s Monday masterclass, it was all about Hugo Lloris (5.5) as Spurs held out for a point against Leverkusen.

Having had the better of the first-half, Tottenham hung on after the break, with Lloris making three superb saves.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino made four changes from the team who drew at West Brom.

Kieran Trippier’s (4.8) inclusion allowed Kyle Walker (6.0) to have his customary Euro break, while Heung-Min Son (7.7) and Danny Rose (5.9) returned to the starting line-up and Eric Dier (5.2) replaced the injured Toby Alderweireld (6.5).

This would appear to indicate starts for Walker and perhaps Ben Davies (4.9) in Gameweek 9.

Son didn’t come in for Vincent Janssen (7.8) up front, however, but in a midfield swap with Moussa Sissoko (6.8).

Should Pochettino continue with that tactic in the Premier League, the 13.3% of Fantasy Premier League managers with Son in their squads will be concerned about their man’s potentially reduced goal threat, particularly with Harry Kane (10.7) thought to be lining up a Gameweek 11 return.

Janssen again failed to score, although he did hit the bar, and Dele Alli (8.2) should have done better when he headed wide from six yards out.

Pochettino praised his keeper post-match – and gave an update on the 18.1%-owned Alderweireld.

“To talk about Hugo, he’s one of the best. That’s my opinion about him. It’s great to have him in goal. His save was fantastic and very important for the team. It’s difficult for the weekend because it’s still painful for him (Alderweireld) but it’s important that the scan was all clear. We’ll now see. If he’s not involved this weekend, maybe for the next few games.”

Alderweireld’s potential absence at Bournemouth will come as a blow, not just to his own 18% ownership but also the 36.7% with Walker in their line-ups.

The Belgian is a vital component of Pochettino’s defence which will be more vulnerable at the Vitality without his influence.

Spurs have kept four clean sheets to this point – more than any other Premier League side – but will be colliding with a Bournemouth outfit with three successive home wins, having scored eight goals over those matches.

Their next Champions League encounter will see them host Bayer Leverkusen at White Hart Lane following the Gameweek 10 date with Leicester City.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Alli, Wanyama, Lamela (Sissoko 71), Eriksen, Son (Onomah 90), Janssen (Dembele 65).

Leicester City 1 FC Copenhagen 0

The returning Algerian duo of Riyad Mahrez (9.2) and Islam Slimani (8.5) kept Leicester’s 100% Champions League record intact.

Rested at the weekend, an influential Mahrez flicked home Slimani’s header for the winner to virtually assure new year European football for the Foxes.

Boss Claudio Ranieri also restored full-back Danny Simpson (5.0) to the Leicester defence, which kept a second European clean sheet to go with their three domestic shut-outs. For that they had Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) to thank, the Dane making a fine late save.

Post-match, Ranieri was keen to turn the attention back to his team’s poor domestic form.

“You spend a lot of mental energy in the Champions League. When you come back, you are a little down, but this is normal. We want to change this mood because it is important now for us the Premier League. The Premier League is our priority.”

One player struggling in both competitions is Jamie Vardy (9.7). He again failed to score and has no goals in Europe and just two in the league this season, while Slimani continues to impress.

The Englishman enjoys 12.0% ownership, Slimani just 1.7%. A trip to Spurs aside, the Foxes have a blossoming set of fixtures to come, including Crystal Palace, West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and a trip to Sunderland.

Slimani, who is 1.2 cheaper and has matched Vardy’s goal count from four fewer starts, could offer a better value investment over that kindly spell.

Meanwhile, Mahrez continues to shine in Europe without translating that to Fantasy returns – he’s fetched just a single assist since his Gameweek 1 penalty kick at Hull City but has three Champions League goals.

The Foxes face the reverse fixture in Copenhagen on November 2, four days after the Gameweek trip to Spurs.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Amartey 91), King, Drinkwater, Albrighton, Vardy (Okazaki 84), Slimani (Ulloa 87).

Ah that's very tough. I'd play Baines (if fit) and Lovren for sure. Bench Holebas and Amat.

I'd play Snoddy over Allen tbh, but it's Hull. Damn that's tough. 😕

Currently happy with team but worried about Baines (not playing) & Lukaku (non-owner) so for -8:
        Baines & Deeney to 4.6 & Lukaku?

Can't believe I sold Lukaku last week 🙁

I'd definitely keep Baines if fit. Burnley next.

Not for me, I am now planning my Lukaku exit. Specially not for a -8.

If you need to replace Baines, just do that for a -4. Clyne would be a good shout.

Already on Clyne - Bellerin - Van Aanholt (Doubtful) & 4.0.....can only see 2 of my 5 playing but it's Deeney vs Lukaku which worries me

I wouldn't worry myself, not this week anyway. Deeney has swa HUL as his next 2, I wouldn't be taking a hit to remove him before those. Burnley are tough at Turf Moor. Lukaku does have a fantastic record against West Ham though.

If you only have 2 fit defenders and want rid of Baines in any case then a hit is justified for that. Maybe Cameron/Pieters and put some cash in the bank? Lukaku will still be there next week if you want him.

        Foster (Pickford)

        Mustafi, Williams, Pieters (Amat, Collins)

        Ozil, Walcott, Firmino, Allen (Capoue)

        Costa, Aguero, Benteke

Capoue to Lallana (-4) and bench Benteke? Is it worth a hit?

Wish I hadn't rushed Antonio to Allen, and did Antonio to Lallana instead. Just couldn't rest Allen's form and fixture(s). Now it'll probably end up with benching headaches between Allen and 3rd ST, Austin/Wilson.

Have Mane, but considering Pool double up for their run of fixtures.

        Would you go:

        A Firmino
        B Coutinho
        C Lallana

Lallana at 7.1 is great value I must say. Very important in that attack. Risk is ofc that he is the most likely to be benched out of mane, coutinho and firmino

Lallana has become vital Liverpool player, and I think that only he's so nailed on. Also with poor Sturridge and Origi, and with less fixtures, I don't expect much rotation there. But you can never tell if he's going to haul of blank, and there's still no verdict on who are the optimal two Liverpool mids, let alone who is the ultimately best option. I consider Firmino&Lallana dobule up thoug, but it could end up Mane and/or Coutinho are the ones essential.

Well to be honest i think it will be very hard tp predict which one out of the 4 midfielders in liverpool that will score most points. They are all very involved but lallana is 2 mil cheaper then mane for example. Firmino has been in my team from the start and will probably stay there all season.

Yes, Lallana's price probably makes him the best double up option.

I think he's less likely to be benched than the others because they have more obvious replacements in Studge & Origi!

          He is a good option...

IF City win the league that defense will have to get it together at some point, but that's a big IF. I recall Liv were the same a few seasons back and never managed to shut the floodgates, can see it happening to City tbh and ironically it's actually Liv that look most likely to come good defensively based on stats like shots conceded etc.

No attacking threat at all so totally at the mercy of clean sheets. 4.5 defenders with attacking threat will score comparably over the course of the season - even with 15 clean sheets which is unlikely you would be looking at 125 odd points over a season. Better to spend the extra money and get some attacking threat too at 5.5ish

Sanchez & Wally double up owners are you looking to ship one of them out after GW10?
If so who are you looking at particularly? For me it's either Sanchez to KDB or Walcott to Sterling depending on who's inform or who's not.

Yeah really tempted to do it. A lot of rivals have wally and no sanchez so having both is surely worth considering. And wally is in far better form than sterling. Also if I want kdb at some stage I can swap sanchez..

I swapped Sterling out for Walcott yesterday and although I think it makes sense for next 2 fixtures I'm nervous. Southampton will be tired after their match tomorrow night and City need to bounce back.

              My team is as follows

              Heaton

              Smith, Kone, Valencia, Amat, Pieters

              Walcott, Sanchez, Firmino, Son, Capoue

              Aguero, Costa, Deeney.

Thinking about Son and Sanchez to Alli and KDB for GW11.

Have basically opted for Walcott and KDB over Sanchez and Sterling

Those are good moves in GW11, but with spurs not great fixtures, think about getting another pool mid such as coutinho (or lallana to upgrade defence) instead of Alli.

Do Payet to KDB next week would be my suggestion, but otherwise good. Jaku is also a problem.might want to double up on pool soon, so son to coutinho/lallana or even arnie is also an option in the future.

Erm have you seen Costa's form lately? Top form, blanked once this season.

But in this 3-4-2-1 system, Hazard has been given much more freedom and a more central role. Like a second striker. Definitely eyeing him up but Costa is probably the best forward option in the game ATM.

That's what I was thinking two weeks ago. How comes everyone loves Costa, when he get less bonus points and more yellow cards than Hazard. Plus with Chelsea changing to new formation, 3-4-3, analysers are saying that hazard basically plays up front most of the time in Chelsea's formation, with alonso behind him playing as left winger basically
