The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 14

And so the power shifts once again.

I can barely remember witnessing such upheaval: where we’ve had to re-consider where our big-money is spent and switch our sights, not only due to form, but simply availability.

We started the season coveting Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Then Diego Costa emerged, followed swiftly by Eden Hazard as Chelsea blossomed. Now Harry Kane, with seven goals in five, becomes a priority.

While these players battle for recognition in our squads, Sergio Aguero was considered by most as a mainstay: a factor that required little consideration.

That theory wavered back in Gameweek 3 but today’s events may have changed it for good.

Aguero had not served a suspension until this season. Now he is set to miss at least seven weeks of this campaign before the turn of the year. Few, if any, could have anticipated that.

Hours after the bombshell at the Etihad, Alexis Sanchez then provided his own explosion.

We always knew the dangers: deployed up front by Arsene Wenger, he has always been part of the heavy-hitter debate.

But, with heads turned by Chelsea’s faultless form and the promise from Eden Hazard, some, including this Fantasy manager, chose to lose Sanchez’ special talent, keeping Aguero locked into our attacks.

Now, with the City striker being ejected from squads throughout the land, the sacrifices required to gain the likes of Hazard, Costa and Marcos Alonso – all so alluring with Chelsea’s form and fixtures – no longer apply.

When I showed Sanchez the exit ahead of Gameweek 12, opting to sell Aguero was something I pondered, but quickly dismissed.

Today’s events punished that particular decision. They also force us re-examine the established thinking.

We are so set on Aguero. His place is so cemented in Fantasy Football folkore, the prospect of progressing through a season, or even a period of Gameweeks without him almost seems unthinkable.

But while a saintly Costa is scoring goals and avoiding the booking that will see him serve a one-match ban, we’ve seen Aguero inexplicably become an unreliable hothead.

We can’t begin to fathom how those roles have been reversed. We can only react to what we’ve now been dealt.

While those without Sanchez are denied the convenience of carrying out a like-for-like swap for Aguero, even with the cost of an additional transfer, it will likely prove a popular route.

Acquiring Sanchez no longer comes packaged with such sacrifice now that Aguero is out of the equation, his millions available to us.

In Gameweek 4 we formed plans to sell a suspended Aguero and bring him back two weeks later. This time around the landscape may have changed.

As of today, it seems likely that few will be forgoing Sanchez for Aguero should that decision ever arise again.

Although it’s almost folly to make such predictions in a season that refuses to allow us to settle in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

id say yes... Sanchez is now probably the most essential player in the game, Phillips is outrageous value and nearly a viable 4th Mid but certainly a long term 5th. Cant see you regretting those moves especially considering you have Liverpool cover in Firmino

Bottomed. Think my team is pretty much good to hold now until after Xmas

    Heaton / Pickford
    Vertongan / Alonso / Cedric / Holebas / Amat
    Sanchez / Firmino / Siggy / Pedro
    Costa / Kane / Austin

Think the only pick I'm worried about is Pedro. £105.00 value now - 170k rank but expecting to explode over Xmas... I hope. 2nd or 3rd is most my mini leagues - time to take over!
    No more hits.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Aguero Ban Shockwaves

A lot has been mentioned already about the best Aguero replacements. For most it will be an easy move to get in which ever of Kane, Costa, Ibrahimovic you don't own but have coveted for a long time.

But there are wider implications as well across Fantasy managers squads.

    The emergence of super teams

Suddenly with money to spare there will be some managers with a good team value who will be able to afford most of the key premium heavy hitters with a frontline of Costa and Kane, and a midfield of Sanchez, Hazard and a Liverpool midfielder. This group may also be able to add Ibrahimovic to the mix and include the likes of Alonso in defence. The rest of their team will also be good including the likes of Austin or Sigurdsson too.

These super teams will be titans among Fantasy managers and a group to fear over the coming weeks as they have all top captain choices covered.

Third striker options just got complicated

Defoe continues to perform, but now Benteke with three goals in two has hopped off the goals imminent table in style.

Austin has strong fixtures, Anichebe is still a strong budget option and now we also have Iheanacho for the next four games.

The Man City youngster scored 20 FPL points across the two games Aguero was previously absent for.

    Chasing Tails won’t go away.

From being dumped, snapped up, dumped, then snapped up again Sanchez is heading for a triple price rises as managers continue to chase their tails. He is undoubtedly a good option but will many of his new owners continue being so fickle? At least Aguero reduces the talent pool but it seems there is still no end in sight to this season's dog chasing tails scenario.

Will there really be a post Aguero template?

But while Aguero makes it appear that a template will emerge I’m not so sure. There are so many different team structures out there with so many different team values. For most, myself included at least one of Costa and Sanchez is unattainable for now without a huge team restructure. Even then it’s tricky. There will be others in the same position. I think the template will remain elusive, albeit with a few more Costa, Kane and Sanchez owners around.

What do you think about how Aguero's ban will effect FPL? Any other shockwaves to mention? Do you think a template will emerge? Is Iheanacho now a great option?

You are exactly the sort of Fantasy titan I was talking about.

Over the next four you have all the main captain choices, plus Sigurdsson and Austin and a good defence. A manager to be feared.

Yep. For me a low team value (102.9 I think last count) means I can't have Sanchez and Costa currently.

For others it will be as you say the different between a budget defence and having Alonso.

I have restructured so my team is now (with a value of £103.4m):

          Pickford - Grant
          Alonso - McAuley - Smith - Amat - Lenihan
Sanchez - Hazard - Firmino - Sigurdsson - De Roon
          Costa - Kane - Austin

I will just have to rotate between McAuley, Smith and Amat. Butland's new injury news makes Grant appealing still. I am hoping that with the heavy hitters I can climb rank and then wildcard before a double GW.

I do think it is a bit of a shame as more of a template will form. Having said that there are enough options that FPL won't get too boring.
Kane/Costa/Sanchez blanks next week would do FPL good.

      Surely no one can turnout:

      Alonso
      Sanchez - Hazard - Mane/Firmino - Eriksen/Siggy - Fodder
      Costa - Kane - Zlatan

Is that what you're suggesting in the 'super-team' para Jonty?

That bar Zlatan is the sort of super team I'm talking about.

But yes it may be possible to afford that with a poor bench and pickford/grant gk combo - especially if they got Costa in and kept since GWK 1.

Can't thank you enough Jonty for suggesting I captain Sanchez. I always prefer to have my captain playing at home, but against a poor Hammers' defence that don't yet properly 'own' their home fixtures it paid dividends. Just as well as my main ML rival had Brunt, Kane(C) and brought Sanchez in this week.

I wonder how long it will take people to jump back on Aguero? It's only 4 games at the end of the day. The problem with losing Aguero is that it sounds great on paper - "look at this awesome team I can get!". But come GW 20 and a refreshed Aguero has just scored a brace at Anfield and has Burnley (H) up next, you wouldn't want to be more than a couple of moves from getting him.

        Great point.

I've had two weeks without him. Last week was a nightmare, this week a dream. But he's not going to start kung fu fighting players every week.

For the agueroless it is all about how few goals he will score not whether he will score. He will, most matches anyway.

I'll have an eye on Aguero returning...then the new Sanchez and Costa owners will have some tough decisions to make.

But interestingly, Aguero comes back on 3 yellows and having got all 3 of them in the 5 matches before yesterday.

I too lost Kun last GW(for Ibra) but actually gained points by doing it as I would've captained Coutinho had I kept Kun.

          Kun(12) + Coutinho (1x2) = 14

          vs

          Ibra(9x2) + Coutinho(1) = 19

Everyone will have five of those. Not sure everyone will have, or be able to afford all of them.

Will Defoe owners really want to get rid of him for Austin?

        Will Ibrahimovic owners ditch him?

Still plenty of different teams around.

I have been lucky and own all of those players already.

      Front 7..

      Hazard - Sanchez - KDB - Firminio
      Austin - Kane - Defoe

I also have Walked at the back.

I could go template and take a -4 to bring in Costa and Siggy for KDB and striker...but I think I will hold.

I have good team value (and thanks to yesterday) a decent rank. One person in my cash league has quit his account yesterday as he said he is over 100 points behind with no chance of catching.

I disagree. If you have less cash and are chasing then you need to decide which players to get and don't try to go template. Go with Ibra or Eriksen or Illenacho etc. I have jumped from 100k to 30k so far this week. It is possible. Just don't try to emulate a template if you can't.

I get the feeling that we're not done with the template shaking-up for this year. Pep fielding KDB as a false 9 is now very likely and will bring another big-hitter into the mix. I think this season many teams have been helped by the mid-5M form players. First Capoue, then Allen, now Phillips.

I'm both pleased and upset. Yesterday morning, I took the hard decision to dump Aguero to Kane with a mind of bringing in Costa this week. The results yesterday went my way with the exception of swapping for Sanchez captain to to Kane. Now everyone will join the gang giving away the potential advantage.

Did three transfers yesterday for minus eight that leaves me with

      Heaton / Foster
      Alonso / Clyne / Cédric / Holebas / Evans
      Sánchez / Hazard / Firmino / Capoue / Fletcher
      Kane / Costa / Benteke
and £0.0 in the bank. (Team value: £105.1.)

I could have had £0.2 in the bank if I did Sánchez before his price actually went up instead of right after, and got in de Roon instead of Fletcher (who also takes up a West Brom slot). That £0.2 would’ve been handy for eventually upgrading Capoue to a decent fourth mid. Stupid, stupid, I know.

My focus going forward should be on dealing with the fourth mid situation, right? That’s what I miss to have a “super team”, right?

For me its a straight shoot out between

Giroud and Walcott to Sanchez and Iheanacho

      or

Giroud and Foster to Costa and Pickford and keep Walcott.

So basically Costa v Sanchez. Actually a tough choice.

I think it is an easy choice. Sanchez explodes in a way Costa doesn't. Defoe and Austin aren't far behind Costa. Where as Walcott isn't really likely to keep pace with Sanchez. You can captain Sanchez. You can't captain Walcott.

I guess Hazard could sort of cover Costa but can Walcott sort of cover Sanchez? But then again, Hazard only got among the points after Costa was subbed off. It's a really tough choice indeed...

And the other big question is will Pep go with Iheanacho or KDB as false 9?

After Anichebe the next best starting scoring forward is above 6M so that's a guaranteed 1.3M margin to invest elsewhere. Not like mids where you have guys from 4.3M onwards at regular price intervals. Or defence from 4.1M onwards.

The Aguero ban is annoying, I like to think I was building towards a 'super team' for the coming weeks, had a 6m+ spot in defence, Sanchez, Hazard and Siggy in MF + Aguero, Kane and Austin upfront, TV is 104.9, now all that's happened is that I've changed Aguero to Costa and now have 3.7m in the bank to add a 4th big mid at 9.1m or a second premium defender at 6m+

I don't like it, it's making the game too easy to form a template now, preferred it when people were forced into touch choices like Walcott over Sanchez or Kane over Costa, now we can have them all if we want.

Aguero and Coutinho have messed the game up.

TBH taking Aguero out of the equation over Xmas may not be a bad thing. No one knows how Pep is going to manage the fixtures and rotation.

It has given me the opportunity to bring in Kane and look at a Chelsea defender. I'm pretty happy that I took some hits a few weeks back to make sure I could have Sanchez, Hazard, Costa, Austin and Siggy. I've also got Walcott, but he may become a Liverpool or Spurs mid in the coming weeks.

This looks to be the template indeed, Jonty. Ibra might make his way into some teams as a differential over Kane/Costa. If Liverpool's confidence is shaken from today's loss, they could suffer - they have tough games coming up - Everton, Boro away, City. Firmino had a mare today and Mané is nursing what looks like a minor injury.

After a 101 point monster haul I'm just outside the top 100K with the following:
      Heaton (Pickford)
      Cedric, Alonso, Brunt (Evans, Amat)
      Firmino, Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Trollcott (Stanislas)
      Kane, Costa, Austin

What should I do here? 1ft, 0.7 in the bank

    Heaton, Pickford
    VVD, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Hazard, Mane, Firmino, Walcott, Fletcher
    Ibra, Kane, Austin

Firmino or Siggy > Hazard for free?

Ideally needs to be one of these two - despite Siggys appeal and only getting him last week, Swansea look utterly pump.

      thought i posted

im in the same boat - i could do siggy > haz for -4

or redmond > haz for -8, downgrading holebas to ake

In you case I would do Redmond > haz for -8pts

Problem is I need to upgrade Allen....and needs a lot of funds (that I don't have or can't get)

          yeah ill probably do that

its if siggy is worth -4 and a bit more spare change. I think anything is worth it to get rid of redmond

annoying that kolarov was running through treacle at the end!

V happy with yesterday.. 96 pts and a Chelsea win, must say my transfers worked brilliantly Coutinho + Kun >Sanchez and Kane.. Gained me about 45 points

Any changes need to be made for next week ?
      Heaton (Pickford)
      Alonso Daniels Evans (Williams)
      Hazard Sanchez Walcott Shaqiri (Capoue)
      Kane Costa Anichibe
      2.4 itb
May need to get in a Lpool so
      A) Shaqiri -> Firmino
      B) Walcott -> Mane

    Morning guys,

    So like everyone else I'm looking at how to get Sanchez back in the team, and your advice would be great, team is;

    Heaton - Pickford
    Alonso - Evans - Holebas - Cedric - Kingsley
Hazard - Walcott - Firmino - Sigurdsson - De Roon
    Costa - Kane - Austin

0ft but 2.4m in the bank, after doing Aguero to Costa last night.

    A. Walcott and Sigurdsson to Sanchez and Philips
    B. Walcott and Alonso to Sanchez and Gibson
    C. Hazard to Sanchez
    D. Walcott and Austin to Sanchez and Anichebe
    E. Stop over reacting, Sanchez isn't even that good really

I'd stick - you've made your FT, Austin has some nice fixtures coming up and Walcott is likely to get back in the point soon (not to D). Philips' fixtures are now pretty horrid and Siggy's far better (A), don't lose Alonso when all others are getting him in (B). C's a coin toss, but taking a hit you'd immediately need Sanchez to outscore Hazard by 4 and Chelsea have some lovely fixtures coming up while Wenger's threatened to rotate...

    Alonso Walker Hole McAuley Amat

    Sanchez Haz Firm Phillips Hojbjerg

    Kane Costa Austin

The downside of playing in a competitive ML: Most of your rivals have 90+ pts and 68 pts is below average.

  19. Gassemannen

    Heaton (Grant)
    Brunt - Pieters - Holebas - Kone - Amat
Sanchez - Firmino - Mane - Sigurdsson (deroon)
    Costa - Kane - Austin.

    1 FT, 1.1 ITB.

Save FT or upgrade defence? Luckily did Aguero/Lukaku -> Costa/Kane (-4) before this gw's deadline.. 93 points with 2 liv to go.

    1. Winniesta
      • 13 Years

Great looking team. I've moved Pieters out as he's got some tough fixtures coming up and I needed Alonso. Zouma would be in range should he return to the starting 11, otherwise perhaps Rose?

    Team now

    Pickford
    Alonso, nyom,holebas
    Firmino, hazard, siggy, sanchez
    Kun,Kane,Costa

    Amat, capoue, A.smith

    Stone broke tho.

    Hi
    How to get Sanchez in?

    Grant, Pick
    Koscielny, Alonso, Holebas, Lovren, Amat
    Hazard, Firmino, Sigurdsson, Redmond, Allen
    Kane, Costa, Deeney
    2.7 ITB

Im thinking Koscielny + Redmond + Deeney -> Cedric + Sanchez + Anichebe (-12). Is -12 too much?
I would prefer Austin but should cost me -16..

Immediately after the Aguero red, I took a 12 point hit in a fit of a anger. Defence needed a good cull anyway and my squad is perfect now til Xmas.

But what are some of your crazy hit stories?

Could be from getting in after a boozy night out and putting Capoue in for Firmino because Capoue is game... or, being at a game live and seeing how bad they are, and hitting in anger.

wonder if managers are repeating history. So many jumped from Sanchez to Hazard to catch price rises, his immediate fixtures were very ropey, middlesborough, SPURS, man city. blanked two then scored on the break.
Now its all about getting Alexis, STOKE, everton, man city. You not gonna captain him either, least i woudn't

I hacked apart my team in GW K 6 to get Sanchez in. It started a slide that saw me add 1m to me rank.

Little surgery is required this time - but I wouldn't be removing good players to get him in.
