The Stock Check – Gameweek 14 – Sunday

Roberto Firmino draws a blank as Sadio Mane and Emre Can plunder the points prior to Liverpool’s late collapse at the Vitality. Later in the day, Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues his improved form as Romelu Lukaku’s stock plummets further…

On The Rise

Sadio Mane
Liverpool’s top scorer took his tally to seven goals for the season after slotting home the opener at the Vitality Stadium.

The second most transferred in player for Gameweek 14 due to team-mate Philippe Coutinho’s injury, Mane netted away from Anfield for the first time since the season opener at Arsenal and also chipped in with an assist against the Cherries.

Although he’s set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, the packed hectic schedule could still see Mane rack up the points.

Between Gameweek 15-20, which takes us all the way up to January 2, he faces West Ham, Middlesbrough, Everton, Stoke and Sunderland, in addition to hosting Man City’s porous defence on Boxing Day.

However, having limped off this afternoon, though, his fitness will need to be monitored ahead of a busy December.

Emre Can
Handed a place in our Spot the Differentials article, the German continued his impressive form with a goal and assist this afternoon.

Can has now served up three strikes and an assist in the last five Gameweeks, yet, despite coming in at a mere 4.9 in FPL, sat in less than 2% of squads prior to the weekend.

Although Adam Lallana returned to action off the bench, Can’s contribution suggests that he’s likely to retain his starting berth ahead of Georginio Wijnaldum – the German has now started each of the last seven Gameweeks.

Divock Origi
It’s three goals in as many matches for the Liverpool frontman after a superbly taken strike in the Reds’ surprise loss at Bournemouth.

After emerging from the bench to notch against Sunderland last week, Origi has been rewarded with back-to-back starts in all competitions and also netted in the midweek cup win over Leeds United.

With Coutinho sidelined for a number of weeks, the Belgian’s form may well have cemented him a place in Jurgen Klopp’s XI for the time being.

Given that Mane is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, Origi – at just 6.5 in FPL – will be pushing to retain that starting place over the next couple of months, although Daniel Sturridge, once fit, will clearly be a factor.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Capitalising on an error by Maarten Stekelenburg, the United frontman took his tally to six goals in as many matches across all competitions.

Having netted four times in the first 10 Gameweeks, Ibrahimovic has finally started to translate the underlying numbers into Fantasy returns, firing four goals in his subsequent three league outings.

With the need for a Sergio Aguero replacement a priority, United’s schedule from Gameweek 16 hands them seven very favourable fixtures (cpl, wba, SUN, MID, whu, sto, HUL) in the following eight to promote the Swede’s appeal.

Considering that Juan Mata dropped to the bench despite the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney, Ibra looks the safest bet for those backing Jose Mourinho’s men to flourish.

Nathan Ake
A late winner against Liverpool made it two goals in three appearances since being handed a first start in Gameweek 12.

Ake’s recent displays hand Eddie Howe a real headache once he has a full quota of defenders to choose from – with Charlie Daniels ruled out again today, Adam Smith and Simon Francis were fielded as the full-backs.

Should Ake continue in the first XI, a price of 4.2 in FPL would certainly boost his appeal as one of the cheapest active defenders available.

Ryan Fraser
A 15-point return from a 36 minute appearance from the bench, Fraser turned today’s game for Bournemouth. Priced at 4.9 in the FPL, it remains to be seen if the young scot can now cement a starting role for Eddie Howe’s men to become a factor in our season.

Fraser replaced former Fantasy target Junior Stanislas who hobbled off with a knee injury, labelled as “serious” by the Cherries boss according to early reports.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Having recovered from a calf complaint, the Brazilian was shifted onto the left flank to accommodate Origi through the middle.

Firmino’s failure to play a part in any of Liverpool’s three goals proved hugely frustrating for his 18% FPL owners – a run of three successive blanks is his longest of the season.

With cash freed up by the Sergio Aguero suspension, many are looking for a way to own both Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard in the centre of the park and Firmino could well be earmarked as a potential fall guy.

Nonetheless, Liverpool’s upcoming schedule suggests that getting rid at this point still has the potential to backfire.

Liverpool’s Defence
Back-to-back clean sheets against Southampton and Sunderland had suggested that Liverpool’s rearguard may finally be worth considering.

The loss of Joel Matip proved costly, though, as Klopp’s side fell apart in the final half-hour against the Cherries.

Incredibly, Liverpool have conceded nine times in the three matches that the Cameroon international has missed – they’ve shipped the same number of goals in the 11 league matches with Matip on board.

If our faith in the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren is to be rewarded, the Reds’ summer signing needs to shrug off his ankle injury as soon as possible.

Romelu Lukaku
The Belgian’s alarming slump in form shows little sign of abating – he failed to produce a single attempt against United earlier today.

Adding injury to insult, he now looks to have falling down the penalty pecking order after Leighton Baines stepped up to slot home a spot-kick and seal a 1-1 stalemate.

Second only to Philippe Coutinho for transfers out last week, Lukaku, with one goal in six now, has continued to shed owners since the weekend deadline – he faces clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool in the next three.

Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley
The pair dropped to the bench as Ronald Koeman attempted to address a dire run of form that had harvested one win in Everton’s previous eight matches.

After starting each of the first nine, Jagielka has omitted from the starting XI in two of the last five, with his role as a regular now looking in question under the Dutchman.

Barkley had started all but one of the first 13 Gameweeks but failed to earn pitch time off the bench as the Toffees looked to chase the match, with Koeman instead turning to Gerard Deulofeu and Enner Valencia as substitutes.

With the upcoming Christmas period all about ensuring our benches are well-stocked, the Toffees exodus looks set to expand beyond just Lukaku.

Owners of Seamus Coleman and Yannick Bolasie will also be mulling over their options after both picked up knocks and were forced off.

I have always been in agreement that hits for defenders are not wise....until this season. I am finding there is always something else to change up elsewhere in the squad so def gets neglected. If you have a defender that isn't performing consistently then a hit for someone 'better' (if it's a long term move) makes sense IMO. I took a hit to bring Alonso in last week and it paid off with the assist. I took a hit this week too moving Kone to Cedric and hoping for the same outcome. Do it, great match to have Alonso on board for.

Would really like to get Alonso but is it worth a hit?

    Heaton, Pickford
    VVD, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Hazard, Mane, Firmino, Walcott, Fletcher

    A. Save
    B. VVD, Williams to Alonso, Cedric -4
    C. Williams to 5.7 (Clyne/Valencia)

    Hi all

Already got rid of Kun and Allen for Sanchez and Austin... I know... Kneejerkers anonymous needs a spot of me this week! Worth riding up to a -8 to finally rid myself of Kaku for Origi!? Obviously want rid but I have limited myself to -4s to stay competitive in my MLs, and other injuries have meant I couldn't get rid of the troll 🙁

    Xi is

    Pickford / fodder
Walker Amat Alonso / Pieters 3.9
Hazard San©hez Firmino Siggy / Fletcher
    Austin Kane Kaku
    0.5 itb, -4.

Worth a -8 for Origi? Or keep kaku again vs. Watford away and ship out alongside Pieters next week??

    Thanks!

    http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2016/Dec/Jose-Mourinho-comments-on-Eric-Bailly-return-to-squad-at-Everton.aspx

“We need that,” Mourinho said of Bailly’s availability. “It's impossible for the same players to play every match and in this moment we are having that because of a lack of available options. So to have Eric back is good news, even though it is only for a few weeks because we know he goes to the Africa Cup of Nations very soon [in January], but at least in this busy period of Christmas we have one more option. That's important.”

I don't rate United' defence right now and we have many other options with lovely fixtures during winter but maybe they will finally start keeping clean sheets in December. After Spurs they have home matches against Sunderland and Boro, away matches against Palace, WBA and West Ham. All of them are beatable and Jose knows they simply can't afford to keep dropping points anymore and desperately need better results. Bailly was clearly one of their best players before the injury and Mourinho rates him but will he start in all these matches remains questionable. Of course I'd want to see him start first and then continue the discussion.

£5.3m, 6.5% ownership. Is he worth a punt for 5 games before he goes to AFCON?

Even if that were true (it probably is) then it's still in your interests to do it to stop everyone else getting more points than you. Plus if they sell him they won't be able to buy him back easily, whereas you will. Go for it.

I think I'm happy to have Ibra over Costa, especially since I have now finally got Haz in. Can't see myself captaining Costa enough for him to be worth it - would probably captain Haz if I was giving the armband to a Chelsea player. While I don't believe in “cover,“ I think its important to have captain options from various teams.

Lovren / Stones / Van Dijk
    Phillips / Hazard / Mane / Sanchez
    Austin / Kane / Defoe

    Jaku / Capoue / Friend / Amat

    2.7 ITB.

Look ok? I know def needs some work but I don't like taking hits for def as no clean sheets guaranteed anywhere! Might put capoue instead of Phillips for next GW but also hard to drop him at the mo.

Chuffed with a score of 88 at the weekend, last minute captain change to Sanchez, moving to 1st in ML and in top 57k overall 🙂

See, girls can know a bit about footie 🙂 (Apart from being a Toon fan :-()

Thank you, that might be my next weeks move. I am not keen on a hit for it as I can't see Leics scoring against City (or anyone) at the mo so if he sticks with stones could be a cleanie. And if he doesnt play then Amat V sunderland isnt too bad.
I think i'll do that next week though with my FT. Thanks for the reply

My problem with Costa is he’s not an explosive enough captain option. Has only blanked twice the whole season but only 3 double figure hauls. Was much better value for money at the start of the season.

i think Origi or Iheanacho are better picks.

Both play for substantially better teams.

I've gone for Origi due to his fixtures in the next couple games and the fact that he has match confidence after scoring 3 in the last 3.

I was never sold on anything that comes from Southampton. Origi is a bit cheaper, can rise if score something. Overall they are both great player, but current Liverpool situation turns me to Belgian. Only question is his naildiness and I have nothing to say about that, because I have no knowledge in that subject.

As long as you think he'll keep starting he should deliver some points over next few

Not sure if there's a possibility that they play:

        Wijnaldum - Lallana - Mane
        Firmino

      Talk to me about Can....

Is he really an option? At £4.8m is he just going to cause problems later on when it comes to upgrading?

      Moses any good?

Philips still an option even with fixtures? Some tough away games but 3 fixtures at home in next 6 which might be okay.

I had Can for two weeks as my 4th mid and he did nothing. I took him out for Phillips and he gets 11 points.

        FML!!!!

Can has one of the MF spots nailed down, especially with Liverpool injuries and Mane off to ACN in Jan. He'll be in the starting line up until Feb at least.

He is hit and miss, but he's a great 5th MF option.

Phillips is a bit pricier, but also a good option. Brought him in this week for instant returns.

        Brought in Can this week!

I wasn't considering him until I looked at his stats and was blown away.

Up there with the top midfielders in most categories of Doosra's Midfield Marauders table.

He's currently the best enabler in the game and surely no worse an option than Lallana regardless of money.

Only downfall is probably one game at least over Christmas Wijnaldum will surely start over him.

I like him at that price he can be a good fourth mid for a while when Liverpool's fixtures are good. Then can easily become your fifth mid by instead upgrading your current fifth mid.

So in my case I have Can and Capoue with a view to upgrading Capoue when Liverpool's fixtures stiffen - who I almost never want to play.

But the key to Can is that for people like me with a low TV it means we can have Sanchez, Hazard, Alonson, good third striker, Costa and Kane. Almost titan team stuff.

I consider him a very viable option. I'd love to have him. But there are a raft of reasons why i've sadly had to say goodbye.

Key ones are that we have seen what damage Sanchez can do. Firmino can't do that.

Also for my position I'm competing with ghost teams - Sanchez is actually a great differential as he only had 5% ownership early on.

And in my main cash mini league no one has Firmino - top five all have Sanchez - I need to match that and hope my differentials are better than theirs which I think they are.

So Firmino definitely a good option -just not for me right now.

With Liverpool current midfield situation, there is always a chance that Lucas can (hehe, pun intended) score a hatty. Emre is a decent bench warmer like Capoue, you will miss all his points and then cry about that on ffs.
Victor Moses on the other hand, have natural attacking threat as a 'winger'. Much better starting pick. There is no gamble in playing him. Ofc, less involded than Eden, but with his BPL experience, Chelsea fixtures, upcoming Boxing Day(s) bonanza, even with rotation risk he would score points.
With Philips I would go with form over fixtures rule. Consider this, they are playing at best 2 good defences in next 7 (for me obviously), and WBA showed us that they can pull out amazing things this year. No on Leicester level but face it, against swans utd or hull they can get more than 1 point.

        started last 7 games.
        always been a Klopp favourite.
Good chance of continuing to start until Coutinho comes back.
Average pitch position is higher than last season and he said Klopp was telling him to get further forward.
With people playing Allen and Capoue earlier in season a 4.9m midfielder starting in an attacking side can't be a bad thing.
This time last year people were asking same questions about a 5m Alli - not saying he will end up with those sort of stats - but he does seem to be genuinely underpriced.
I'm seriously considering Firmino & Walcott to Sanchez & Can

Your last point is essentially what I'm considering.

Alli was playing as a no.10 though which is a bit different right?

The other good thing about Can over Moses is he doesn't lock down that Chelsea spot if I want Costa eventually.

Definitely do it. We both had great scores this week....but their greatness was overshadowed by the greater greatness of Sanchez (c) teams. That's what he does.

We were right to doubt Walcott on the scoutcast. Best thing to do about errors like that is correct them quickly, bring in a beast of a player and move on.

wasn't so much comparing their roles as the fact a 4.9m playing well in a good side can justify a starting role as a 4th mid.
averaging 5 ppg over last 7 starts. Isn't likely to get many double figure returns but 5ppg whilst probably enabling Sanchez does seem a great opportunity.

Stoked I bought him last week as a shared 4th mid with Fer. 11pts what a result.

The guy had the stats and he has delivered on those stats, an excellent option in his more attacking role this season.

The thing with Klopps attacking style is it brings a lot of players into play, Can is reaping the benefits and is well worth the price.
