Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 14

Gameweek 14’s record of anti-social behaviour can only begin in one place – the bear pit that was The Etihad.

Sergio Aguero (13.0) kick-started the Man City v Chelsea rumpus by expressing his long-held antipathy towards David Luiz (6.1) through the medium of the airborne two-footed lunge.

That has earned him a winter break all of his own.

Aguero will now miss the next four Gameweeks. In addition to the usual three matches (for what Pep Guardiola downplayed as a ‘strong’ but unintentional challenge), he was handed an extra one-match ban for having previous – his retrospective punishment for elbowing Winston Reid in the Gameweek 3 win over West Ham.

As Aguero will now be unavailable until a New Year’s Eve trip to Liverpool, the ownership exodus is most definitely both strong and intentional among Fantasy Premier League managers.

Over half a million have already ditched the Argentinian, freeing up all the funds they’ll ever need to replace him with in-form forwards and big ticket midfielders for the festive season.

Fernandinho’s (5.4) prolonged disagreement with Cesc Fabregas (6.9) following Aguero’s air show earned him a three-match suspension. He’ll miss a trip to Leicester and then home fixtures with Watford and Arsenal before being available for Gameweek 18’s match at Hull on, appropriately enough, Boxing Day.

The Brazilian is only owned by 1.8% of FPL managers, but his and Aguero’s indiscretions will put increased pressure on Guardiola’s squad just as the season gets insanely busy – and that could have major ramifications for managers owning other City assets.

A yellow card for Nicolas Otamendi (5.9) didn’t grab the headlines in the same way that Fernandinho grabbed Fabregas’ throat, but it meant he falls off the Tightrope and will miss the Leicester match.

That will hardly ease the burden on City’s already thinly stretched defensive resources, and the lengthy absence of key players higher up the pitch further complicates the rotation conundrum Guardiola now faces.

How he legislates for the loss of Aguero will become more apparent in the tactics and personnel he employs at the King Power. But throw in five matches in 20 days from December 14, and investment in his players suddenly looks like risky business.

On a bad weekend for Argentinians, Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra (6.0) was given a straight red card for a tussle with James McClean (5.0) in the 3-1 loss at The Hawthorns.

He’ll now miss Saturday’s home match with Everton but will be free to return after that encounter after Watford were successful with their appeal to the FA earlier today, reducing his three-match ban to just one match.

Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater (5.3 and 4.5%-owned) remains unavailable until Gameweek 16 after his retrospective ban, while Hull City’s Dieumerci Mbokani (5.5) won’t be available until the match after that following his straight red for a head-butt in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Three defenders made their way onto the Tightrope.

Leicester’s 7.6%-owned Christian Fuchs (5.4) picked up his third straight caution, while Swansea’s budget boy Jordi Amat (4.1) conceded five goals and received his fourth booking of the season in the shellacking by Spurs.

Watford’s Miguel Britos (4.4) missed the loss at West Brom after seeing red in Gameweek 13, but he’s straight back on the tightrope courtesy of the four yellows he’d previously picked up.

Our weekly hymn to Diego Costa (10.7) continues to revolve around the feisty Spaniard’s new-found taste for restraint. While Luiz was being disembowelled and Fabregas was carefully checking when exactly he could fall over some advertising hoardings, Diego was already off the pitch having gone eight matches in England without being cautioned.

If he can manage another five clean outings, his card count will be reset as part of the league’s New Year armistice. All four of his bookings this season have been for dissent, which suggests that Costa has finally learned just to walk the walk.

Still snuggling up to Diego on the wire of woe are: Chelsea’s entirely-innocent-at-The-Etihad David Luiz; Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) ; Jason Puncheon (5.3); Danny Simpson (4.9); Craig Dawson (4.8); Robert Huth (5.0); Jan Vertonghen (5.7); Lynden Gooch (4.4); Ryan Shawcross (4.9); Didier Ndong (4.8); Billy Jones (4.4); Antonio Valencia (5.4), Kyle Naughton (4.5); Dean Marney (4.5); Matthew Lowton (4.5); Steven Pienaar (4.9) and Michail Antonio (6.8).

Back from a stretch in the slammer are Wayne Rooney (8.6), who hit the five-card mark in last week’s EFL Cup tie and so missed Gameweek 14, Valon Behrami (4.5), and Yohan Cabaye (5.6).

The Men In Black

Three referees pointed to the spot over the weekend to up their penalties per game average: Michael Oliver (0.58); Robert Madley (0.45) and a first in the top-flight this year for Jonathan Moss (0.09).

That leaves just three officials still to give a Premier League penalty this season. Craig Pawson is top of that decidedly frugal tree as the other two, Paul Tierney and Stuart Atwell, succumbed to temptation and awarded one in the EFL Cup.

Promoting Pawson’s particularly praiseworthy propensity for penalty paucity further, he’s officiated in nine matches to the duo’s three.

The main beneficiaries of spot-kick awards remain Leicester and Liverpool, with the pair now joined by Spurs on five for the season.

Everton scored their first at the weekend, much to the joy of Jose Mourinho, which leaves Middlesbrough as the only team not to have netted one, or, indeed ,to have even been awarded one.

Crystal Palace are still the only side yet to give away a penalty, but they’ve found any number of other ways to cough up the 26 goals conceded thus far.

My lineup at the back isn't looking so great this week. Would you make any changes to this defence:

    Rose(mun), Holebas(EVE), Evans(che), Pieters(ars), Amat(SUN)

Pieters out maybe? But the two fixtures after Arsenal look tasty. Perhaps I should suck it up and just take the poor returns from my defence this week?

Aguero coming back after suspension and firing quickly is going to lead to a lot of WCs being burnt early to get him back in (look at all the snap WCs when he got his 3 game ban early this season) - great news potentially for DGW planners, if they leave an easy route to potentially get Aguero back in that is......... 🙂

It's one of the reasons I don't want to downgrade Kane or Ibra to someone like Defoe. Want to make sure I have an easy enough route for Aguero where needed.

Not really as most will have 2(or even all) of Costa/Kane/Ibra. Easy to change one into Kun.

True, but everyone had the opportunity to make an "easy" switch when Aguero got his 3 game ban, but loads chose to widdle the WC up the wall instead.

Need to make a decision right now and commit to it. Either be satisfied with the team without Aguero or plan a route to get him back with fewest possible hits. In case of the former, we know Aguero is going to get hauls, we just have to suck it up.

Well with how volatile this season has been, it's actually likely. Price changes have made it worse. I guess planning for a potential Aguero haul is the best way to go forward then.

A non Aguero suspended is always a nightmare.
Now it is selecting the right players from the pool of say 20 in form players. It will pay only if right players are choosen. Or else the ranks will fall

I think there's a mass case of Stockholm syndrome going on here to be honest; how much more abuse are you willing to take from Aguero before you realize he's not worth 13 mil??

At the moment he isn't and I can't imagine too many will get him back in straight away, but if he starts scoring every week he will be - that's why my question is around what happens if he starts firing - need to keep options open IMO 🙂

I still think though, (and just my opinion), that you can maximise your points per million spent by investing away. I'd prob have him for 11 mil.... 13 mil is just too poor value, considering he's a shaky captain choice. I'd prefer a midfield of Sanchez, Mane, Hazard, Walcott etc.. And I can appreciate your point on what happens if he does start firing again; what I think there is that his haul frequency is choppy and infrequent. If he does bang in 4 vs Pool or Burnley I'll suck it up, but won't chase... based on past performance there's then a chance he goes on a run of two pointers

What to do with 1 FT?

    A) Pieters/McAuley -> Alonso
    B) Defoe -> Costa

    The team:
    Heaton (Pickford)
    Cedric, Holebas, McAuley (Pieters, Kingsley)
Sanchez, Hazard, Firmino, Siggy (De Roon)
    Kane, Defoe, Austin

I'm thinking getting Alonso this week because of the fixtures of Pieters/ McAuley and Defoe and getting Costa for a hit next week.
Is this a good move or should I just get Costa right away instead of Alonso?

With all these transfers being spent on attackers I'm finding it hard to make defensive changes.

Currently rocking - Alonso - Holebas - Lovren - Amat - Brunt which if I assume I'm playing Alonso every week gives me these fixtures from the remaining 4 (while only playing Amat once)

    Everton (h) - West Ham (h)
    Boro (a) - Swansea (h)
    Sunderland (a) - Man United (h)
    Palace (h) - Stoke (h)
    Bournemouth (a) - Southampton (a)
    Stoke (a) - Hull (h)

Not perfect but not too bad either, will hopefully do me over Christmas. Cedric is probably the obvious one to bring in but I can't do it this week and WBA (h) in 5 GWs is probably the only time it really helps me and even that is minimal.

Which defenders are you looking to bring in and replace over Christmas and beyond?

this - I hate taking hits on defenders but have been forced into it this week to do Alonso for Fuchs

still far from perfect - Alonso, Mustafi, Holebas with the utter garbage of Kelly and Kingsley on the bench!

got to do another hit next week to switch Kelly out

because you can't stand still for a minute with the attacking merry go round I hadn't made a defensive change for a month until this week

A hit for Alonso isn't too bad, he could even repay that in one week and he definitely will in the coming weeks, Fuchs has been awful.

Arsenal fixtures are good over the long term but they haven't been keeping many clean sheets - it's a worry.

Arsenal been very unlucky, couple of dodgy pen calls and a needless goal to West Ham - you have to sense that Utd and Arsenal will start keeping clean sheets soon looking at the run of fixtures both have coming up.

Fuchs could be the worst buy I've ever made - 4 weeks, 1 point. I mean...what

I am thinking of bringing in a Spurs defender for their two home fixtures after United. But I am not sure whether Walker or Rose would play both those games. Thats putting me off the transfer. If its confirmed that they would.

They're the kind of stats I like 🙂 It accounts for everything; you can spend all day looking at shots in box, touches final third etc., what these don't tell you is spatial intelligence, shot quality, etc. etc.. I've got a plan to do Diomande + Pedro > Kane (C) + De Roon next week and Walker > Alonso in GW 18.

What are the chances of Kane rising again this week and/or Alonso double rising before GW 18?

    Bit worried about both.

Hi Guys, not to sure what to do this week, current squad:

    ---- Foster ----
    Amat - Walker - Pieters
    Gundogen - Hazard - Sanchez - Sig
    Costa - Kane - Austin

    Bench: Grant, Holebas, Evans, De-Roon

    0ft 2.8itB

    A) Holebas to Alonso for - 4 (then sort Gun next week)
    B) Gun to an 6.5 mid for - 4 (then Holebas to Alonso next week)
    C) Gun to an 8.2 mid for - 4 (wont allow me to get Alonso)
    D) do nothing and wait (Will Gun drop again?? currently at 5.4)
    E) Another suggestion...

    Thanks!

Great, so the template is set again.

    Alonso
    Haz Alexis Firmino/Mane Siggy/Eriksen
    Costa Au$tin Kane

Nice, so another 24 weeks of hovering between a rank of 643k and 591k.

You're wrong though. Austin could easily be Benteke defoe Ighenacho Carroll
      Kane could become ibra
Payet kdb mhikitaryian all know the mix.
There's only ever a certain number of choices it's the way the game works. This season the best in memory for expensive options

I doubt there will be a massive diff between the scoring of Ibra and Kane between now and Xmas/new yr.

Yes, Austin could turn into Carroll/Ihea.

Maybe I should have put prices rather than the players in the template line up.

Would love if Mkhi or KdB come to the party.
