Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Life without Aguero begins with a draw for City while Lucas Perez makes a strong, but possibly futile, case for himself as Arsenal romp to victory in group-winning style. Here’s what we learned from last night’s Champions League action.

Man City 1 Celtic 1

Kelechi Iheanacho (6.6) began his potentially extended turn as Sergio Aguero’s (13.0) replacement with a goal in a match otherwise lacking in definitive pointers as to how Pep Guardiola will work around the Argentinian’s four-match ban.

With the tie the deadest of rubbers, the City boss opted for a decidedly experimental line-up, starting the match with three right-backs and a number of teenagers filling various roles.

John Stones (4.9), Nicolas Otamendi (5.9), who will be suspended for Saturday’s trip to Leicester, and Aguero were all benched, while Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) and David Silva (8.7) had the night off.

The 9.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers with Ilkay Gundogan (5.4) in their sides would have wished the same fate on the German. The fact that he started suggests a reduced role for him at the weekend – Yaya Toure is, of course, available to Guardiola.

By contrast, Guardiola’s use of Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) as a holding midfielder could point to the defender being given a run as Fernadinho’s (5.4) replacement while the Brazilian serves his three-match ban.

Nolito (8.6) set up Iheanacho’s goal, which followed a Celtic opener scored by winger Patrick Roberts – on loan from City. The 19-year-old’s strike seemed appropriate on a night when Guardiola started Tosin Adarabioyo, also 19, in defence and had 16-year-old Phil Foden among his substitutes.

If they represent City’s future, Guardiola was giving nothing away about his present plans in his post-match comments on Iheanacho.

“He [Iheanacho] scored a good goal. There’s not extra pressure (with Aguero’s suspension), he has to make his job for him and for the team.”

Nolito impressed, Iheanacho scored and De Bruyne stayed at home – all three could step in to Sergio’s shoes at the King Power. Guardiola might have learned more about that topic from last night’s match, but we have given up attempting to second guess his intentions.

Having said that, Iheanacho appears to be in little doubt as to his role…

“I have a responsibility to be the striker for the team, replacing Sergio when he is not around. I have to prove myself, give my best and work hard for the team and make sure we get the wins we need.”

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Maffeo (Navas 62), Adarabioyo, Clichy, Zabaleta, Fernando, Gündogan, Nolito, Iheanacho, Sané.
Subs not used: Gunn, Agüero, Stones, Otamendi, Angelino, Foden.

Basel 1 Arsenal 4

Basel had their chances, but Arsenal had better ones and took them to secure a surprise top spot in their Champions League group.

Lucas Perez (7.8) starred, scoring a hat-trick that will most likely do no more than marginally improve his position in the pecking order of an Arsenal attack enjoying an abundant early December.

The summer signing has had just 88 minutes of league action thus far, and his performance in Basel should help him see more when the Christmas schedule really bites.

But with Alexis Sanchez (11.6) starting and both Theo Walcott (8.0) and the fit-again Olivier Giroud (8.7) also featuring in Switzerland, Perez is likely to remain a bit-part player at best.

At least he now has more goals to his name, courtesy of two assists from a consistently dangerous Kieran Gibbs (4.8) and one from Sanchez. Mesut Ozil (9.6) then set up Alex Iwobi (5.8) to cap a fine display from the German.

Shkodran Mustafi (6.1) was rested, Rob Holding (4.1) deputised and Gabriel (4.8) again filled in at right back, but they could not combine to keep a clean sheet – much as Arsenal have failed to do for the past five Gameweeks in the league as well.

That was the only blight on an otherwise impressive night, although tougher tests and better goalkeepers are to come.

Having said that, aside from a Gameweek 17 trip to Man City, the Gunners have strong enough fixtures all the way to February and their offensive threat is there for all to see – they have been blanked just twice in the league all season, while scoring at least three goals on eight of the other 12 occasions.

Where Perez fits into all that remains to be seen.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Gabriel, Holding, Koscielny, Gibbs, Ramsey (Giroud 70), Xhaka, Iwobi, Özil (Walcott 74), Pérez, Sánchez (Elneny 70).
Subs not used: Cech, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Mustafi.

2 FTs and was planning to do Firmino/Mane + Lukaku ➡ cheap mid + Kane.

Last time I asked, people suggested me to drop Mane; but given his form and constant threat, am I crazy to ditch Firmino instead of him?

Drop neither this week. You've missed a couple of rises from Kane anyways so might as well wait until Saturday. Re-evaluate after this week but I'd be more tempted to drop Firmino, I own him and am gutted I don't have Mane in this week.

Great tips, mate, thanks a ton!

Will definitely wait on Kane then. But what should I do with my 2 FTs then? Wanted a Chelsea defender badly, but cannot do without making the moves above. Team is as follows:

        Foster, Valdes
        Walker, Lovren, Fuchs, Pieters, Friend
        Sanchez, Firmino, Mane, Siggy, Fletcher
        Costa, Austin, Lukaku

I'd have to say Fuchs needs to go but guessing you planned on upgrading next week? Annoying you can't save 3 transfers this week. If you want to spend points then Fuchs to Alonso and then Kaku to a one week punt (Origi?), then next week Origi to Kane and Mane/Firm downgrade.

Cheers, mate, but I think I'll do Fuchs ➡ Cedric this week, then Firmino/Mane + Lukaku ➡ Phillips + Kane for free; that will leave me with the exact money to do Friend ➡ Alonso if I want! 🙂

Fuchs is the one I'd ship. Leicester just look shot, and defensively fragile. Cedric an option.

Agreed with all this. I made changes at start of week to ship Aguero, but price changes have been mad so far.

Hold fire on Kane and do early next week. If he scores on the weekend he'll go up 0.2 again next week methinks.

My advice is don't swap and change your Liverpool mids to chase points. One of them normally hauls but never in consecutive gameweeks - so if you were points chasing you would have lost out on a lot of points to those who just get one (or two) and stick with them. Ironically the best strategy of all (obviously with the benefit of hindsight) would have been to sell the one who's just hauled and buy one who blanked.

Morning gents. Having a bit of a shocker of season. Hoping Sanchez captain last week is the turnaround. Anything worth a hit here? 2.7m in bank...

    Foster
    Fuchs Amat Evans
    Sanchez Hazard Mane Firmino Walcott
    Costs Austin

Bench - Nyom + some deadwood

Tempted by Fuchs to Alonso but not sure it's worth a hit. Also makes my route into Kane next week that much harder.

I'd look to upgrade up top.

I'd personally downgrade Walcott (as you have Sanchez) and use that money to upgrade up top. Or even if you don't do that get an Anichebe or another cheap starting striker in so you have that option going forward.

Going to need your bench to have players who are starting over xmas as players will be rested when you don't expect it.

Fuchs to Alonso is good move too though.

But maybe all this can wait til next week?

So, here comes defenders benching problems... I have one place left and three not very satisfying candidates:

Evans - normally I play him, but its Chealsea this weekend, so better not.

Amat - sunderland and at home, but Swans defence is crap.

Kone - dont ask me why I still have him. I dont know that myself...

At first I was leaning for Amat, cause hes playing at home, but now thinking that maybe Kone is the better option? Has some, although minor, attacking threat. And Sunderland improved their defence lately.

it really feels people who would usually never condone hits previously are talking about them with reckless abandon this season--8,-12 'do it' 'I would' etc(not one hit taken by the overall leader this season, 13 transfers in 15 gw'ks -and you might say well he doesn't need them etc). I get that people want to gain ground and feel that its best in the longterm to have a certain player but we've seen how unpretictable fantasy has been recently. Eriksen has been non existent until now and suddenly he is seen as a good long term transfer .theres been GW's where template players have failed miserably and that again leads people to go back to the drawing board .considering the lifespan of a player is by my estimate 3 gwks is theres no returns can we even talk about anything long term? Very few players delivering on a week by week basis in the suarez mould. it just feels like the whole notion around taking hits has changed drastically -am I wrong?

I've taken more so far this year than 9 yrs previously. But then I'm losing vs teams in my ML that are dead teams with TV's 4m lower than mine and I'm 1pt(!) ahead of a team that's done 2 trsfrs all season with a TV of 99.4m

      wtf?

There will always be this argument, I think we should look at hits at the most granular level possible, for example this week there will be a lot of reshuffling with Aguero now out. If I had 0 FT's then Aguero to XX for a 4 point hit is worth it.

Depends on the situation but there are lots of ways to play the game, with price rises having such an affect sometimes its worth it so your players don't drop in value.

Hits this year is so much about calculated risk. The crazy market means that we are kind of being nudged towards taking early -4/-8 and beyond to get the "next big thing", and also many recognise that big TV = massive dgws in h2 of the season.

However, you've gotta balance it with staying competitive, especially vs. cautious players in MLs who don't care about price rises but have fairly solid teams anyway. And I guess that's where the "skill" comes in!

I've put a self-enforced cap of -4 on my hits to keep myself competitive, but it has meant I have many issues remaining with my team as other injuries and bans have led to me making early moves - I still have Lukaku, for example!!

      1. theboijones
        • 8 Years

I have been so reluctant to take hits (up until now!).
This is the first GW I've taken a hit, and its a massive -12pt hit!
I took out Pedro/ Walcott/ Gundogan > Sigurdsson/ Hazard/ Can and hoping it will pay off.

This was more of a long term move, currently mid table in a lot of my leagues, but struggled as I didn't have Hazard, Sanchez or Mane. So needed them in and this was the only way before any price moves as I now have zero ITB.
Next move will be to get rid of one Arsenal defender to free up some funds as having two at the back is risky!

Team lay out for this weekend like this-
        ---------------------Karius---------------------
        --------Mustafi,Koscielny, Holebas--------
        ----Lallana, Can, Sigurdsson, Hazard---
        -------------Costa, Austin, Kane------------
        SUBS:
        -Pickford Barragan Capoue Francis-

What do you think and who should I captain!?

Definitely worth the -12. Have you had Lallana this whole time when hes been injured!?

Phew, thats reassuring to hear! Yes, kept him in my team throughout...
Ok will do- need to claw back some points so thinking of using a bench boost?
            would mean including:
Pickford (SWA) Barragan (SOT) Capoue (EVE) and Francis (BUR)
Is that wise or am I just clutching at straws??

Is this your first season? No problems if so! Big advice is don't bench boost (nor use your triple captain) til next year. There will be double game weeks where a huge bench boost will do you so much better than using it on an ordinary week. Your choice obviously, but I'd not use it until it's double game week

Can you afford Antonio, better option than Lanzini in my opinion. If Bilic got clued up and realised Payet isn't undroppable and let Lanzini run wild then he's a whole different prospect.

Also if Payet goes in Jan I think Lanzini is a great option.

Would you have to take a -4 hit? Not sure about taking Mane out though as Lukaku could get back on track at watford..

Anyone else feel like Aguero's suspension & Coutinho's injury now means that everyone has the same (or very similar) team again? It's made it so easy to acquire both Sanchez & Hazard. Also Kane & Costa/Ibra.

I guess at least it saves us the headache of which ones to leave out but I think it was more fun before!

Aguero is back after Christmas - if he starts banging them in again it will all change 🙂

I am actually disappointed Aguero got a red, I ditched him for Kane last week and hoped the move would pay off, took a lot for me to push the button and sell Aguero then he goes and gets banned anyway Lol. There goes my 'differential' move

Yeah his suspension has even ruined that aspect as we'll never know how the non-Aguero owners would've fared without him. It was fascinating but now it's all rather convenient!

        This..
I dropped him before the Brom haul he got so I've been without him for a while now and was hoping it was going to be quite the differential..
Now it's irrelevant, everyone who was on the fence now have it very easy. Getting him back will now be the big differential which is somewhat annoying.

Last week was big for me though, 106 which is my best haul in fpl to date and it was due to not having Kun and already having my funds spread out nicely. Not having to take a hit this week to bring in Sanchez is ideal too I guess. GW 16 is going to be where everyone has similar teams, apart from defense and the odd attacker like F Society mentioned below.

It has, a lot of front 7's I've seen look identical (give or take the odd player) looks like any gains will be made or lost depending on the strength of your defence now.

If you have a low TV and have put all your money into having the same 6 or 7 attackers as everyone else then it opens up the game to be a straight shoot out between the quality of your defence.

Sanchez seems the obvious choice but can he bring in a 3rd consecutive points haul...Stoke can be resistant and Hazard is due a good home game...thanks to your input, I'll probably end up going Sanchez anyway hah

True. I just find that I know fixtures weeks in advance as I check the ticker a lot but I don't end up getting the players in for them
